DEAR ABBY: I will gradu-ate from college in June and bea social worker. I am psychic, although I dislike that wordbecause it conjures up visionsof crystal balls, quacks andscams. For legitimate psychicindividuals, it can be over-whelming to live this way.

I first noticed my abilitywhen I was young, but Irepressed it because my folksthought I was imaginingthings. It began to resurge incollege. This school is haunted,so I have become used to dailyinteractions with ghosts --often in the dead of night. Ialso notice that during clientcounseling sessions imageswill pop into my head. I oncegave a classmate the "willies"by perfectly describing the gar-den in her backyard havingnever laid eyes on it. Myadviser says I must never tellmy clients the things I "see" inthem because it will frightenthem.

It's hard to separate my ownthoughts and emotions fromthose of spirits around me. I'mconcerned about my psychicability in relation to myclients. If I pick up on abuse inthe mind of a child, for exam-ple, am I obligated to report it?

Being psychic is as naturalto me as my having blue eyes.It will never go away. I mustnow find the means to manageit. I don't want a career as amedium. I'm dedicated to theprofession I have chosen. Canyou offer me advice?

-- GIFTED IN NEW YORK

DEAR GIFTED: Insteadof using your visions to formjudgments about your clients, use them to guide you duringinterviews. If you do, you willthen be better equipped to pro-vide concrete proof of the needfor an intervention than reveal-ing you "saw" something thatothers can't see or wasn't dis-closed to you.

Many people have psychicabilities to a greater or lesserdegree than you do, and those"vibes" can be invaluable. It ispossible that your gift will giveyou insight into the individualsyou will serve. I wish you suc-cess.

DEAR ABBY: My wife hasturned into a bona fide slug!We have been married 30years. For half of them shestayed fit and trim, but over thepast 15 she has put on 100pounds and refuses to try tolose any of it. She also refuses

to cook. I have to cook myown meals or we eat out. Sheno longer cleans (we pay amaid) or has sex with me.

She is obviously depressedand has taken several medica-tions over the years to no avail. She has had lab work done, butnothing shows up. Because shedoesn't have a job, she sitsaround in her pajamas all dayplaying on the computer orreading romance novels. She'lldo laundry, but only after amonth, when there's nothingleft to wear.

The other thing my wifelikes to do is travel. The moreexpensive the trip, the moreshe loves it. Does God reallyexpect me to live like this untilI die? I have tried everything Ican think of to help her. Idread going home every night.Advice, please?-- LIVING IN HELL IN WEST

VIRGINIA

DEAR LIVING INHELL: The marriage you havedescribed isn't "living," it isexisting. Insist, as a conditionof staying in the marriage, thatyour wife have a thoroughphysical and psychologicalevaluation. She appears to bedepressed, withdrawn and pos-sibly not in touch with reality. Her physical health is also atrisk.

Not every medication workson everyone. Your wife'sweight gain may have madethe dose she was taking inef-fective -- or she may need acombination of drugs and talktherapy. Clearly she isn't happyin your marriage anymoreeither, if she's escaping intoromance novels instead of hav-ing a relationship with you. Please get her the help sheappears to so desperately need.

SOCIAL

DDEEAARR AABBBBYYAbigail Van Buren

Spring has sprung at myhouse! The daffodils areblooming down by thecabin, the garlic that over-wintered in the garden isgreening up, and a few“volunteer” onions haveeven sprouted inside therabbit fence.

Last week I shared acompilation of severalMarch “to do lists” that Ihave collected through theyears. My question to youthis week is, did you add itto your gardening note-book? So many of us areguilty of clipping greatideas out of periodicals andthen lumping them alto-gether in a file and thenpromptly stacking the filesomewhere “out of sightand out of mind.”

Sydney Eddison, authorof “Gardening for aLifetime,” explains thatlists became a necessity forher after her husband’sdeath. She had been luckyenough to hire a born plan-ner to help in the garden. The author was “gently”pushed into generating alist of what they needed toaccomplish in the fourhours her helper spent withher each week. Theywould begin each visit witha walkabout. Her helperwould haul out a notebookand pencil and off they

would go with a package oflarge white plastic plantmarkers in hand.Whichever perennial need-ed attention, Eddisonwould make a note on thestake and stick it into theground next to the plant. Her helper would then dowhatever needed to bedone.

The author attributesmuch of her helper’s effi-ciency to the list-makinghabit. It is a technique fre-quently recommended byself-help books to establishorder and reduce stress.Writing something downgets it on paper and offyour mind.

Soon the weekly listgrew into the creation of amaster list. The object is toinclude, literally, every-thing – tasks both great andsmall, from pruning theforsythia to mulching theflower beds. Eddisonadmits that compiling themaster list in the first placeis a tedious, time-consum-ing job, but it is well worththe effort. This master listhelps to keep the gardenerfrom being so over-whelmed by the enormityof what has to be done.

A sampling ofEddison’s last season’smaster list includes: Rake, blow, pick up sticks and

twigs on lower lawn, Seedbare patches on upperlawn, Fix damage to drive-way retaining wall, Pruneforsythia hedge, Mendglue, and nail loose stripsof lath on front gate, Cutback variegated weigela,Order tarp, Edge front oflong border, and Patch holein the lamb’s ears in frontof long border.

Eddison also learnedabout punch lists from hernewly hired handyman. She now makes notes ofjobs that will require eitherspecial expertise or addi-tional man-power and addsthem to her garden punchlist.

At the end of the chapterthe author shares her tipsfor list making.

(1) Keep the daily listshort because you probablyhave too many other obli-gations already. (2) If youare lucky enough to havehelp in the garden, a list foryour helper will save timeand therefore money. Bothwill be better spent. (3)Keep your Master Listhandy and use it to generateyour daily lists. If you havea limited amount of time tospend in the garden, whynot make it count? (4) In alarge garden, it is importantto practice a sort of horti-cultural “triage.” Some

things are essential; othersare not. Learn to prioritize!

The March 19 garden-ing seminar on LandscapeDesign has been postponeddue to a scheduling conflictat Southern StateCommunity College. Wehope to have a new date setas soon as possible.

The Master GardenersSeries presented by theBrown County MasterGardeners has threeremaining sessions thisyear that include: March 15– Flowers, April 19 –Planting in Containers, andMay 17 – Herbs.

Have you planted peas?Have you started seedsindoors? Have you orderedall those special seeds thatwere on your wish list? Somany questions ... so littletime before we start dig-ging in the dirt!

PLASMA JETS INSTEAD OF DRILLS?The future of dentistry may bemore akin to science fictionthan patients might ever havebelieved. In fact, it seems thatnew research involving streamsof bacteria-killing plasma mayreplace today’s drills in the nearfuture. Plasma is formed whenelectrons are emitted byenergized gases. In this case, researchers used a relativelycool beam of purple plasma toeliminate oral bacteria in dentalcavities. The plasma beamremoved dentin (the materialbeneath the enamel thatcomprises the majority of thetooth) more selectively than aconventional drill. While thisresearch is preliminary, researchers believer thatplasma jets can be ready forremoving tooth decay in as fewas three to five years.

Our entire staff at CLARKFAMILY DENTISTRY encour-ages your questions aboutcomprehensive dental care. Wesupply superior oral health carefor the entire family. Foranswers to your oral healthissue questions we invite you tocall our office at 937.393.3494.

Your health is our firstpriority. We are pleased toprovide you with state-of-the-art dental care at 624 S. HighStreet, Hillsboro.

Our goal is to make each visitto our office a comfortable andpositive experience. Newpatients are always welcome.

P.S. It isn’t the heat of theplasma that is thought to killcavity-causing bacteria; it is theplasma jet that get the job done.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Jake Weber, 48; Bruce Willis, 57; Glenn Close, 65; Ursula Andress, 76.HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Don't backtrack this year unless you have really checked out the potential consequences. It's important to know what you are up against if you don't want to face setbacks. Work and play with people who have some-thing to offer you in return. Strive for equality and you will find the happiness you deserve. Your numbers are 3, 7, 13, 22, 26, 37, 49.ARIES (March 21-April 19): Embrace change andlet your emotions guide you. Understanding what you need most will enable you to make choices that will influence your future and bring you greater security. Don't be afraid to use a little force to get your way. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Stick to what you know and do best. You'll learn a difficult lesson if you let someone take advantage of you. Don't tempt fate when it comes to traveling or following rules and regula-tions. Open your heart, not your wallet. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Don't let others slow you down. Size up your situation and push forward with your plans. The influence you have will win points and lead to advancement. A favor granted will make a huge difference to the way you progress. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Don't let a last-minute change upset your world or your future. Be creative and you will come up with a plan that will help you stay on course. You can learn a lot if you observe how others handle responsibility. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You'll be intuitive regarding money and health matters. Follow your gut feeling and do the responsible thing when it comes to home and family. Sticking to a budget and keeping things simple and moderate will pay off in the end. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Put more emphasis on how you treat others and how you want to be treated in return. Networking will bring good results, and a partnership with someone spe-cial will help you stabilize your life and your future. Love is highlighted. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Find ways to compromise. Avoid overindulgence. Let your intuition guide you and you will make choices that bring greater security. An older friend or rela-tive will offer you something you cannot refuse. Old goals can now be achieved. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Home is where the heart is, and with a little finagling you can make alterations that will add to your comfort and security. Love is on the rise, and making spe-cial plans geared toward a better partnership will pay off. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Don't guess. It's crucial to be absolutely sure before you make a move. Rely on experi-ence and call in favors from reli-able people. Domestic changes will give you a new lease on life. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Take your time. Jumping to conclusions will lead to a mishap that can affect your reputation. Concentrate on building your equity and putting more time

and effort into your surround-ings and relationships. Love is in the stars. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Someone will let you down if you are too trusting. Don't share your secrets or take on too much. Keep things simple and steer clear of anyone who is overindulgent physically or financially. Make choices for the right reason, not for someone else.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Dream a little dream and make it a reality. Be creative and follow a path that allows you to be unique and original. Someone you consider to be gifted will want to contribute to your goals. A partnership will pay off. BIRTHDAY BABY: You have pizzazz, charm and good work ethics. You are adaptable and progressive.
