    2011 AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL DIVISION CHAMPIONS

    The Detroit Tigers enjoyed a banner year in 2011 as Manager Jim Leyland guided the team to a 95-67 record toearn the club’s first-ever American League Central Division title and the first overall division crown since winningthe American League East Division in 1987. The Tigers success continued into October as the Tigers defeated theNew York Yankees in five games in the American League Division Series before eventually losing to the TexasRangers in six games in the American League Championship Series.

    The Tigers banner year was keyed by one of the greatest individual performances by a player in franchise history. Justin Verlander posted a 24-5 record, 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts and was named the AmericanLeague Cy Young Award winner and Most Valuable Player by the BaseballWriters Association of America. He is the first Tigers player to win both honors since Guillermo Hernandez in 1984. He was the first pitcher in baseball to win both awards since Oakland’s Dennis Eckersley in 1992 andthe first starting pitcher since Boston’s Roger Clemens in 1986.

    Verlander led the American League with 24 wins, a 2.40 ERA and 250strikeouts to become the second pitcher in franchise history to win the triplecrown, joining Hall of Famer Hal Newhouser, who accomplished the feat in1945. In addition to leading the league in the triple crown categories,Verlander also led the league with an .828 winning percentage, 251.0innings pitched, a .192 batting average against, 6.24 hits per nine inningsand 8.39 baserunners per nine innings.

    Verlander also tossed the second no-hitter of his career on May 7 atToronto and was named to the all-star team for the fourth time in his career.

    AL CENTRAL CHAMPIONS

    Joining Verlander on the all-star squad was teammate Miguel Cabrera,who also put together an MVP-caliber season. The slugging first basemanbatted .344 to win the first batting title of his major league career. He led themajor leagues with a .448 on-base percentage while becoming just the fifthplayer in franchise history to score 100 runs, drive in 100 runs and walk 100times in the same season. Cabrera led the team with 111 runs scored, 197hits, 48 doubles, 30 home runs, 105 RBI and 108 walks.

    Cabrera heated up as the Tigers pulled away in the division race, batting.408 with 23 doubles, eight home runs and 37 RBI over the final two monthsof the season. He continued his hot hitting in the post-season, batting .314with four doubles, four home runs and 10 RBI in 11 games during October.He also walked 12 times during the post-season and led the majors with a.489 on-base percentage.

    Closer Jose Valverde was also named to the all-star team in 2011 as he establishedcareer highs with 75 appearances, 49 saves and 72.1 innings pitched. He led theAmerican League with 75 appearances and 49 saves and brought home hardware following the season as he was named Major League Baseball Delivery Man of theYear. Valverde was a perfect 49-for-49 in save appearances, setting a new clubrecord for saves in a season and consecutive saves.

    In addition to setting the club record for consecutive saves in a season, he becameonly the third pitcher in major league history to be perfect in all of his save chancesduring a single season while posting 40-or-more saves. He joined Eric Gagne with 55consecutive saves for the 2003 Los Angeles Dodgers and Brad Lidge with 41 consecutive saves for the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies.

    Rounding out the Tigers five all-stars were bothJhonny Peralta and Alex Avila. Peralta was named tothe all-star team for the first time in his career andranked among the top offensive shortstops in theAmerican League, finishing second with a .299 batting average and 84 RBI when playing the positionin 2011. The all-star selection was also a first forAvila, who was voted to start behind the plate for theAmerican League, becoming the first Tigers catcherto start the all-star game since Ivan Rodriguez in2007. Avila emerged as one of the top catchers in theleague, earning Silver Slugger honors after leading allAmerican League catchers with a .292 batting average, 130 hits, 32 doubles, 77 RBI and a .507slugging percentage while catching.

    Another key to the Tigers offensive attack in 2011 was designated hitter Victor Martinez. The switch-hitter batted.330 with 40 doubles, 12 home runs and 103 RBI in his first season with the Tigers. He finished fourth in theAmerican League with the .330 batting average, while ranking 10th with 103 RBI. Additionally, Martinez topped theAmerican League with a .394 batting average with runners in scoring position.

    The Tigers also added two key players down the stretch who filled a bigrole in the playoff push. Righthander Doug Fister was acquired from theSeattle Mariners on July 30 and excelled in his first action with the Tigers.He posted an 8-1 record and 1.79 ERA in 11 games with the Tigers andearned the victory in the division-clinching win over the Oakland Athleticson September 16, limiting the Athletics to one run on three hits over eightinnings. Fister was also on the hill for the Tigers in the deciding Game Fiveof the American League Division Series against New York at YankeeStadium. He limited the Yankees to one run on five hits in five innings toearn his first post-season victory.

    Outfielder Delmon Young was acquired from the Minnesota Twins onAugust 15 and plugged into the lineup as the Tigers everyday left fielder.Young batted .274 with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 40 games down thestretch with the Tigers. He also matched a club record with five home runsduring the post-season, including a key home run in the decisive GameFive victory over New York at Yankee Stadium.

    By winning the Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player in 2011 and the American League Rookie of the Yearin 2006, Verlander became just the second player in major league history to win the Rookie of the Year, Cy YoungAward and Most Valuable Player. He joined Don Newcombe, who accomplished the feat by winning NationalLeague Rookie of the Year honors in 1949 and the Cy Young Award and National League Most Valuable Player in1956 with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

    Verlander also became just the second Tigers pitcher to earn triple crown honors, joining Hal Newhouser whotopped the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts in 1945. He also became the first American League pitcher to winthe triple crown since Minnesota’s Johan Santana in 2006. In addition to wins, ERA and strikeouts, Verlander alsoled the league with an .828 winning percentage, 251.0 innings pitched, a .192 batting average against, 6.24 hitsper nine innings and 8.39 baserunners per nine innings. He tied for the lead with 34 games started, finished thirdwith 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings and 4.39 strikeouts per walk, tied for fourth with four complete games, tied forfifth with two shutouts and tied for seventh with 2.0 walks per nine innings.

    The righthander further etched his name into the record books on May 7 at Toronto when he tossed the second no-hitter of his career, allowing just one walk in a 9-0 victory over the Blue Jays. He became the second pitcher infranchise history to toss two career no-hitters, joining Virgil Trucks who fired two no-hitters during the 1952 season. According to STATS LLC, he became the 27th pitcher to record two career no-hitters in the American orNational League.

    Verlander made nearly a clean sweep of the post-season awards, earning American League Pitcher of the Yearand Major League Player of the Year honors from The Sporting News, while also earning American LeagueOutstanding Pitcher and Major League Player of the Year honors from his peers in the Major League BaseballPlayers Choice Awards.

    GREENBERG WINS TWO MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARDSOn the heels of Cochrane’s 1934 Most Valuable Player Award, Hall of

    Fame first baseman Hank Greenberg put together a monstrous 1935 season where he batted .328 with 46 doubles, 16 triples, 36 home runsand 170 RBI to earn his first career Most Valuable Player Award.Greenberg led the league with his 36 home runs, 170 RBI, 389 totalbases and 98 extra-base hits.

    Like Cochrane, Greenberg’s performance helped lead the Tigers to theWorld Series, but this time around the Tigers defeated the Chicago Cubsin six games to earn the club’s first-ever World Series title. Greenbergwas limited to two games during the series due to a broken wrist sufferedin Game Two, but still managed to belt a home run and drive in a pair ofruns in his six at-bats prior to the injury.

    Greenberg earned Most Valuable Player honors again in 1940 afterbatting .340 with 50 doubles, 41 home runs and 150 RBI. He led theleague with 50 doubles, 41 home runs, 150 RBI, 384 total bases, 99extra-base hits and a .670 slugging percentage, while finishing secondwith a .433 on-base percentage and fifth with a .340 batting average.

    His efforts propelled the Tigers to the World Series, but the club wouldfall to the Cincinnati Reds in seven games despite his .357 batting average with four extra-base hits and six RBI during the series.

    GEHRINGER BECOMES TIGERS THIRD MVP IN FOUR SEASONS IN 1937Hall of Fame second baseman Charlie Gehringer became the

    third Tigers player to win Most Valuable Player honors in a four-season span when he received the award in 1937. Gehringerbatted .371 with 40 doubles, a triple, 14 home runs and 96 RBI,establishing career highs with the .371 batting average and a.458 on-base percentage. He won the American League battingtitle with the .371 batting average, topping New York’s LouGehrig, who finished second at .351. In addition to his offensivesuccess, Gehringer led all league second basemen with acareer-high .986 fielding percentage and finished second in bothputouts and assists.

    The award came after four consecutive seasons of finishing inthe top six in Most Valuable Player voting as he finished secondin 1934, fourth in 1936 and sixth in both 1933 and 1935.Gehringer broke through to win the award by edging New York’sJoe Dimaggio by just four points in the voting, while teammateHank Greenberg finished third in his bid to win back-to-backMost Valuable Player Awards.

    COCHRANE BECOMES FIRST TIGERS MOST VALUABLE PLAYERHall of Fame catcher Mickey Cochrane joined the Tigers in 1934 as

    a player-manager after nine seasons with the Philadelphia Athletics.He was known as a natural leader on the field and came to the Tigerswith a Most Valuable Player Award on his resume, having won theaward in 1928 with the Athletics.

    He made an immediate impact on the Tigers, guiding the club to a101-53 record and a berth in the World Series for the first time since1909. He batted .320 with 32 doubles, two home runs and 76 RBI tobecome the first player in franchise history to earn Most ValuablePlayer honors.

    The Most Valuable Player voting in 1934 was dominated by theTigers. Second baseman Charlie Gehringer trailed Cochrane by twopoints in the voting and finished second, while pitcher SchoolboyRowe finished fourth, first baseman Hank Greenberg finished sixthand third baseman Marv Owen finished ninth. Cochrane remains theonly catcher in club history to win the Most Valuable Player Award.

    MCLAIN BECOMES FIRST TIGERS CY YOUNG AWARD WINNERThe 1968 season was a magical one for the Detroit Tigers and their ace

    righthander Denny McLain. McLain finished the season with a 31-6 recordand 1.96 ERA to become the first major league pitcher to win 30 gamessince Dizzy Dean posted a 30-6 record for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1934.No pitcher has reached 30 wins since McLain, making him the only pitcher innearly 80 seasons to accomplish the feat.

    In addition to his dominance in the win column, McLain also led the leaguein winning percentage, games started, complete games and innings pitchedin 1968 and was voted both the American League Cy Young Award winnerand Most Valuable Player. McLain became the first pitcher in franchise history to win the Cy Young Award and joined Newhouser as the secondpitcher to win Most Valuable Player honors.

    He followed the 1968 season with a 24-9 record and 2.80 ERA in 1969.He led the league in victories, games started and innings pitched and wasvoted the American League Cy Young Award winner for the second consecutive season. He remains the only pitcher in franchise history to winmultiple Cy Young Awards.

    HERNANDEZ EARNS BOTH MVP AND CY YOUNG HONORS IN 1984The 1984 season was a memorable one for the Detroit Tigers as the

    team jumped out to a 35-5 start and rolled to a World Series title. RelieverGuillermo Hernandez was a stopper on the pitching staff, posting a 9-3record, 1.92 ERA and 32 saves in 80 games out of the bullpen. He converted 32 consecutive saves during the season, a club record thatstood until Jose Valverde posted 49 consecutive saves in 2011.

    Hernandez led the league in appearances and games finished, whileallowing just 96 hits in 140.1 innings out of the bullpen. The 140.1 inningspitched out of the bullpen remains second-most in franchise history by arelief pitcher, trailing 150.0 innings by John Hiller in 1974.

    For his efforts, he was voted both the American League Cy YoungAward winner and Most Valuable Player. He became the second pitcher infranchise history to earn Cy Young honors and the third pitcher in franchise history to earn Most Valuable Player honors, joining DennyMcLain as just the second to earn both the Cy Young Award and MostValuable Player Award in the same season.

    NEWHOUSER WINS BACK-TO-BACK MVP AWARDSThe Tigers run of Most Valuable Player Awards continued with

    Hal Newhouser, who became the first pitcher in franchise history towin the award in 1944. He followed with a second Most ValuablePlayer honor in 1945, giving Detroit six Most Valuable PlayerAwards over an 11-season span from 1934-45.

    Newhouser posted a 29-9 record and 2.22 ERA during the 1944season, leading the league with 29 wins and 187 strikeouts. Inaddition to his Most Valuable Player honor, Newhouser was theinaugural winner of the American League Pitcher of the Year Awardfrom The Sporting News.

    Newhouser followed up the 1944 season by winning the AmericanLeague triple crown with a 25-9 record, 1.81 ERA and 212 strikeouts in 1945. He also led the league that year with 36 gamesstarted, 29 complete games, eight shutouts and 313.1 inningspitched. He was also named Major League Player of the Year andAmerican League Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News.

    Newhouser nearly won a third consecutive Most Valuable PlayerAward in 1946, losing to Boston’s Ted Williams by 27 points afterposting a 26-9 record and 1.94 ERA. He led the league in bothwins and ERA, finishing second in strikeouts to narrowly miss asecond consecutive triple crown.

    A proven leader in the sports, restaurant and entertainment industries, Michael Ilitch enters his 20th full season asOwner/Director of the Detroit Tigers. • He was a driving force behind the creation of the Tigers spectacular new home, Comerica Park, and contributed

    more than 60 percent of the financing for the $300 million facility. • Served a key role in designing the new ballpark, bringing years of entertainment experience to the efforts that

    resulted in many of the features that make Comerica Park unique. • Ilitch's acquisition of the Tigers on August 26, 1992 was the culmination of a long association with the club that

    saw him originally sign a minor league player’s contract with the organization in his early 20s. • Ilitch’s playing career was cut short due to a knee injury after his third season with the minor league club. • Founded Little Caesars Pizza in 1959 with his wife, Marian…Little Caesars, which is one of the top international

    pizza chains with restaurants on four continents, celebrated its 50-year anniversary on May 8, 2009.• Committed to business ventures in their hometown of Detroit, the Ilitches purchased the Detroit Red Wings in

    1982 and have built them into an elite NHL powerhouse with four Stanley Cup titles in the last 15 seasons. • Also purchased Olympia Entertainment, which manages several restaurants, sports and entertainment venues in

    the Detroit area. • While many businesses were leaving Detroit's urban center, the Ilitches in 1987 purchased the neglected Fox

    Theatre, a 1928 landmark on the famous Woodward Avenue...with great effort, the building was restored to its original splendor and was reopened with 5,000 seats in 1988…it is now among the highest grossing theatres of its size worldwide.

    • In 1989, the family further committed its efforts to reviving Detroit's downtown by relocating its suburban Little Caesars headquarters to the Fox Theatre's adjacent 10-story office building…since then, the area around the Fox and Comerica Park has seen significant development, including the Ilitch-owned City Theatre and Hockeytown Café.

    • Created Olympia Development in 1996 to promote development in downtown Detroit.• In 1999, Ilitch Holdings, Inc., was formed to provide the family’s primary business interests in the food, sports

    • Prior to his stint with the Lions, McLean spent two seasons (1994-96) with the Houston Rockets of the NBA, where the Rockets, under his direction, had their largest season-ticket base in franchise history.

    • McLean started his career in the front office of the NBA's Detroit Pistons (1984-93) and also spent a season as Vice President of Ticket Sales for the International Hockey League's Chicago Wolves where the Wolves set the IHL record for paid attendance and led the league in season ticket sales and revenue.

    • Earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and a master’s degree in administrative leadership from the University of Oklahoma.

    • His lengthy tenure as head of hockey operations for the Red Wings is second only to the 35 years served by the late Jack Adams, the Wings legendary general manager credited with building the dynasty of the 1950s.

    • Has been instrumental in many historic decisions in the NHL...brought the Entry Draft to the U.S. for the first time on June 13, 1987 at Joe Louis Arena...the NHL followed his suggestion for a new overtime format that includes skating four aside, one point for each team following a regulation tie and an additional point if a team wins in overtime.

    • Joined former Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman as a scout with St. Louis in 1967 when the NHL expanded from six teams to 12...Devellano’s strong recommendation would later lead to Bowman’s hiring by the Wings.

    • Joined the NY Islanders as a scout in 1972 and helped build a team that won four straight Stanley Cup titles from 1980-83...was general manager of the Islanders CHL farm club in Indianapolis before returning to New York in 1981 as the Islanders assistant general manager.

    • Devellano is a shareholder and director of the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the International League.

    • Inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.• Received the Lester Patrick Trophy in 2009, an award given annually in recognition of outstanding service to
