Eureka, of course, is a Greek word that

means I have found it and it described

perfectly the sense of discovery I felt the

day I arrived here in the fall of 1928. Eureka

was everything I had dreamed it would be

    and more.

    -- Ronald Reagan 32

40th President of the United States

THIS IS EUREKA COLLEGEEureka College is a family. A small family.

Our historic campus, located on 112

wooded acres in the heart of Central Illinois,

can best be described as charming and

friendly. Our focus on a comprehensive

liberal arts education, with major emphasis

on leadership and service to others, is

    one-of-a-kind. Our proximity to Peoria,

    Bloomington-Normal, Chicago, St. Louis,

and Indianapolis make us ideal for those

looking for major market facilities, yet like

to return to a safe, secure, and small town

    environment.

THE FOUNDING OF EUREKA COLLEGEEureka College was founded by abolitionists

from Kentucky who were members of a

religious movement known as the Christian

Church (Disciples of Christ) and were

committed to providing young people a

    liberal education. These pioneers believed

in an education infused with values as

a basis for leadership. Chartered by the

Illinois Legislature in 1855, Eureka was

the fi rst college in the state and third in

the nation to admit men and women on

an equal basis. To the present day, the

college has continued to be interested in the

development of character as well as intellect

and technical competence with emphasis on

    service and leadership.

Eureka College has had a major impact on

American life, with alumni who have had

    successful careers in education, business,

    management, the arts, and community

    service. Graduates include forty-two

    college presidents, seven governors and

members of Congress, a Nobel Laureate

team member, and former President Ronald

    Reagan, Class of 1932.

HOW SMALL IS SMALL?Eureka College has just under 800 students.

Is this a disadvantage? On the contrary

-- we view it as an amazing advantage.

    David Everetts (17691813) line, ...large

streams from little fountains fl ow, tall oaks

from little acorns grow rings true at Eureka.

Each of those lucky enough to become a

part of Eureka College and our traditions

    fi nd themselves supported, encouraged,

and treated, not as a number...but as the

    extraordinary and creative individuals they

    are.

In this unique and empowering environment

some of the best and brightest have

discovered their strong sense of self, their

vocation for their future, and a deep love

for this special small campus. Imagine -

from this small campus has come forty-two

    college presidents, seven governors and

members of Congress, a Nobel Laureate

team member, and the 40th President

of the United States. EC has over 5,000

living graduates located around the world.

Youll fi nd many of them serving the current

President of the United States, serving as

Eurekas historic campus has 112 acres with 24 buildings. The College offers more than 30 majors and programs of study.

doctors, lawyers, teachers, and heads of

non-profi t organizations around the globe.

AROUND CAMPUSAs a student at Eureka College, getting

    involved is a tremendous opportunity

    that will have lasting impacts on your life;

short term and long. With the turning of a

new academic school year, the amount of

organizations and activities are plentiful. No

matter if you are a new fi rst year, transfer

    student, commuter, or upperclassman,

taking advantage of what we have to

offer will be to your benefi t. The college

experience is about growing the holistic

student in all areas including outside the

classroom. By giving of your time and

talents to an organization, the organization

can thrive and your college experience will

    be even more valuable.

The Student Activities Offi ce at Eureka

    College strives to promote co-curricular

involvement in the areas of organizations

and activities using various resources on

and off campus including the Cerf College

Center; center of campus community life.

    We encourage personal development

    socially, interpersonally, and morally

    through student engagement. Providing

    programming, campus activities, and

resources we strive to cultivate holistic

student growth and development and in turn

support the mission of Eureka College.

The Donald B. Cerf Center is a focal point

of campus activity, housing the Burgoo

-- the campus snack bar -- and the College

Bookstore. The Cerf Center also houses the

Ronald W. Reagan Museum. It is frequently

the site of public and private events.

ABOUT THE FACULTYEureka College faculty play a pivotal role

in working toward the success of each

and every EC student. The College has an

average class size of fi fteen students and

    a student-faculty ratio of 12:1. Many faculty

    have earned national and international

recognition in their areas of scholarship,

such as: social responses to alcoholism, the

history of slavery; recognition in lepidoptery,

    philosophy, Native American literature;

    and individually recognized Fulbright

    Scholarship recipients.

SIMPLY PUTEureka College is one of the best

    educational experiences that a prospective

student can have. Eureka College is a

remarkable family, populated with some of

the fi nest, dedicated, caring individuals in

the world. Over 150 years of excellence

in learning, service, and leadership is our

    guiding force. Unfortunately, the College

    simply cannot accommodate everyone.

Entrance is limited. This opportunity should

not be allowed to slip by.

Nearly 300 Eureka College students participate in athletics. A total of 27 student-athletes earned their degrees in May 2012.

THE PRESIDENTS WELCOMEOn behalf of all Eureka College students, faculty, staff, alumni and

trustees, I am pleased to welcome you to Eureka College. We are

happy to have you on campus as we observe our 158th year of

excellence in learning, leadership and service.

Athletics play an important role in the lives of students at

Eureka College. Nearly half of our students play a sport at the

intercollegiate level and most other students participate at the

intramural level. Athletic teams are integral to the educational

process, providing means to learn leadership, discipline, tenacity,

    persistence and cooperation.

I am proud of the student-athletes that you are watching today.

They are wonderful ambassadors for Eureka College, and their

efforts exemplify learning outside of the classroom, developing teamwork and building school

    spirit.

    J. David Arnold, Ph.D.

    President of the College

THE REAGAN INFLUENCEThey were simply known as Dutch and Moon, nicknames passed down from their father. Ron

was thought to have resembled the Dutchman while Neil looked like comic strip character

Moon Mullins with his slicked back hair. The names stuck.

During his four years at Eureka, Reagan demonstrated his gratitude by immersing himself in

the life of the College. He even convinced his older brother Neil to enroll in the fall of 1928,

creating the enviable situation of his older brother waiting on him as a pledge at the TKE

    house.

Ronald Reagan graduated in 1932 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science and

economics. He moved to Davenport, Iowa, to accept a position as a sports announcer for

radio station WOC. His career led him on to Hollywood and then into state and national

politics, but his loyalty to Eureka College was evidenced by his three six-year terms on the

Colleges Board of Trustees and his continual involvement in various college related events.

In his 1992 Commencement address, President Reagan related the experience of the class

of 1932. We took with us from Eureka College the strength born of a spirit of fellowship,

willingness to work together for common goals, and a deep faith in the word of God. In the

case of Ronald Reagan, who graduated from Eureka in the early years of the Depression,

those values propelled him to a lifetime of leadership.

From sports broadcaster, to actor, to politician, Dutch Reagans four years of personal

development at Eureka launched him into a lifetime of leadership.

Opened in 2007 as one of the fi nest NCAA Division III soccer facilities in the Midwest, Traister Field serves as the home of the Eureka

    College mens soccer team.

Located along Dickinson Drive on the far eastern side of campus, Traister Field features a natural grass playing surface, full irrigation

system, two-story press box for media and game operations, concession area and sheltered dugout areas for both teams. Fans

regularly line the sideline with chairs and blankets and take advantage of the spectacular view of the pitch from the hillside behind the

south goal line. A full, regulation-sized practice area is available for the Red Devils just north of the playing pitch.

The facility was dedicated for and named after Eureka Athletics Hall of Famer Leo Doc Traister during a ceremony on Oct. 24, 2008.

Traister came to Eureka as a student-athlete in 1939, earning four letters in baseball, three letters in football and two letters in track

before graduating in 1948. Traister returned to campus in 1956 to serve as Director of Athletics and coach all EC sports until 1966.

    Traister remained on various coaching

staffs until as late as 1990 and fi nished

his stint on the basketball coaching staff

in 1974 as the all-time wins leader at EC

with 168. He was inducted into the Eureka

College Athletics Hall of Fame in 1977 and

remains actively involved with his wife,

Betty, as supporters of the Eureka College

    athletics department.

Traister Field also serves as an occasional

home for area high school matches, as well

as various summer youth soccer camps

conducted by Eureka College and its

    coaching staffs.

The Eureka womens soccer team recorded

a 5-4 victory over Rockford in the fi rst

regular season game played at the facility

on Sept. 6, 2007. The EC mens and

womens squads have combined to win 25

matches on their home pitch in the fi ve-year

NCAA Division III history of the program.

    TRAISTER FIELD

Since opening in September 2007, Traister Field and Eureka College have played

Paul Bryant will enter his fi fth year as the Director of Athletics at Eureka College in the fall of 2012. Since Bryant arrived at the helm of

Eurekas athletic department in the summer of 2008, the Red Devils have experienced unprecedented success on the playing fi eld and

    in the classroom.

After only two Eureka squads qualifi ed for the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason from 2006 through 2009, the

Red Devils have qualifi ed for six SLIAC Tournaments in Bryants four years as Director of Athletics, including championship game

appearances by mens basketball in 2010 and womens basketball in 2012. In all, fi ve of Eurekas nine eligible programs have played

in the SLIAC Tournament during Bryants tenure, including multiple appearances from mens basketball (2010, 2012).

In addition to the strides the Red Devils have made on the playing fi eld,

Bryant has also placed a signifi cant emphasis on academics, creating

the Director of Athletics Honor Roll prior to the 2009-10 academic year.

A record-high 81 student athletes were named to the A.D. Honor Roll in

Spring 2010, while Eureka is represented well on a regular basis on the

SLIAC and Upper Midwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Teams.

Eureka earned a total of 27 academic all-conference selections during the

2011-12 year, and fi ve student-athletes to earn the award participated in

    more than one sport.

Bryant has also made tremendous use of Eurekas celebrated athletics

history, welcoming a pair of Eureka College Hall of Famers back to the

    athletics staff as head coaches.

On Dec. 4, 2008, Bryant hired 1998 EC graduate Kurt Barth to direct the

Eureka football program. Barth, who starred on the gridiron for the Red

Devils from 1994 through 1997, has rapidly made his mark on the Red

Devils. Barth has coached Eureka to its most successful three-season

stretch in more than a decade and posted the best 30-game debut by a

Eureka football coach since 1997. Barths infl uence has also allowed the

Red Devils to produce record-breaking statistics on the playing fi eld, as

Eureka has broken 14 team and individual program records since his arrival

    in 2009.

Nearly one year later to the day after Barths arrival, Bryant chose Eureka

icon Craig Gerdes as the new head coach of the baseball squad on Dec.

1, 2009. Gerdes promptly guided to the Red Devils to a program-record 19

victories and their fi rst-ever appearance in the SLIAC Tournament in 2010.

The effort earned Gerdes SLIAC Coach of the Year honors. The 1971

Eureka graduate won 31 games in two seasons as head coach

prior to his retirement in 2011.

Bryant has spearheaded several projects to improve Eurekas

on-campus facilities. In June 2011, Bryant secured the funding

for the purchase and installation of a new hardwood fl oor in the

Reagan Center. The surface, formerly used as a practice fl oor

by the NBAs Minnesota Timberwolves, gives Eureka a regulation

hardwood fl oor for basketball and volleyball for the fi rst time since

2008. In addition to the hardwood fl oor, two new state-of-the-art

Nevco scoreboards were installed in the arena in December 2010,

and new shot clocks were installed in June 2012.

The latest facilities improvement under Bryants watch was The

McKinzie Project. A permanent brick wall was installed at the

Eureka is scheduled to play 15 matches in 2012, including its fi rst-ever contest

against Iowa Wesleyan on Sept. 22 in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

The Eureka College mens soccer team will

enter its sixth season as a member of NCAA

Division III in 2012. Under the direction

of third-year head coach J.L. Zapushek,

the Red Devils will continue their push to

earn their fi rst-ever St. Louis Intercollegiate

    Athletic Conference Tournament bid.

The Red Devils will turn to a trio of four-

year players for leadership this fall. Senior

defender Kyle Oyer enters his fi nal

collegiate season ranked fi fth in program

history with 54 matches played. He also

ranks among the programs top-10 lists in

goals, assists, points and shots on goal.

Blake Baxter will also enter his fourth

season of collegiate soccer in 2012. Baxter,

who will contribute as a forward and

defender this fall, has played in 45 matches

    in his career.

Nate Mullins will become the fi rst four-year

goalkeeper in program history when he hits

the pitch in 2012. Mullins is the all-time

program leader with fi ve career victories.

Juniors Brendan Carr, Tom Moody, Tyler

Mumm, and Kirby Wagner all return as

starters from last season. Mumm is the all-

time Eureka leader among goalkeepers with

Moody shares the active Eureka lead with

three goals, while Carrs 33 shots rank ninth

    all-time at EC.

A group of fi ve newcomers will join the

program for 2012, including Illinois Central

    transfer Todd Sluder.

The Red Devils will begin the season at

home for the fi rst time since 2009 and

just the third time in program history when

Spalding visits Traister Field on Saturday,

Sept. 1. The match with the Golden Eagles,

the fi rst of two matchups with SU in 2012,

conference contests in less than four weeks

    to begin the season.

Lincoln Christian (Sept. 12) and Wisconsin

Lutheran (Sept. 16) will make non-

  • 2012 EUREKA COLLEGE MENS SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

J.L. Zapushek will enter his second full season and third season overall as head coach of the Eureka College mens soccer team in

2012. Zapushek was named the second head coach of the Eureka College mens soccer program on Feb. 25, 2011. Zapushek had

been a member of the Eureka coaching staff since the programs inaugural NCAA Division III season in 2007 and served as the interim

head coach of the Red Devils for the fi nal 11 matches of the 2010 season.

Zapushek, who needs three victories to become the all-time coaching wins leader in program history, completed his fi rst full season

as head coach of the Red Devils in 2011. Under Zapusheks guidance, Cody Halstead, Derek Johnson and Evan Kingery each ended

their collegiate careers ranked among the top-10 scoring leaders in the history of the program. Halsteads eight goals proved to be the

sixth-highest single-season total in program history, and the Peoria,

Ill. native fi nished his two-year career under Zapushek ranked

third in program history with 46 points. Goalkeeper Nathan Mullins

also made his mark on the Eureka record book in 2011, as his

90-minute, 7-save effort in a victory over Spalding on Oct. 22 gave

him his fi fth career victory to become the winningest goalkeeper in

    Eureka mens soccer history.

In addition to the individual accolades on the pitch, Zapushek

guided the Red Devils to their fi rst-ever victory over SLIAC

foe Spalding, 4-1 on Oct. 22 at Traister Field, and a 2-1 non-

conference triumph at Wisconsin Lutheran in Milwaukee on Oct.

    9. The triumph at Wisconsin Lutheran marked the fi rst non-

conference road victory over a Division III opponent in program

    history.

After being promoted to interim head coach in September 2010,

Zapushek guided the Red Devils to a 4-6-1 record in the fi nal 11 matches of the 2010 campaign, the best 11-match stretch in the history

of the program. His fi rst three matches resulted in the fi rst three-match unbeaten streak (2-0-1) in program history. Included in that

streak was a 1-1 draw with SLIAC power Fontbonne at Traister Field on Oct. 2, 2010 a team that had outscored the Red Devils 16-0 in

    three previous meetings since 2007.

Eurekas production at both ends of the pitch saw signifi cant improvement after Zapusheks promotion in late September. The Red

Devils averaged 2.10 goals during the fi nal 11 contests, up nearly a full goal per game from the 1.22 goals scored on average during

the fi rst nine matches. Defensively, Eureka yielded 2.45 goals per game under Zapusheks watch, compared to 4.56 goals per game

during the fi rst nine matches of the season.

The Peoria, Ill. native owns more than two decades of coaching

experience as a youth club coach and is the only remaining coach

to have been a part of the Eureka program since the Red Devils

began fi elding a team at the club level in 2006.

While serving as an assistant coach to both the Eureka mens

and womens soccer programs, Zapushek played a large role as

an assistant in helping the Eureka womens soccer team post a

7-10-0 record in its fi rst year at the NCAA Division III level in 2007.

Eurekas .412 winning percentage was easily the highest among

seven fi rst-year Division III womens programs that season.

Zapushek was ultimately elevated to assistant head coach of

the Eureka womens soccer team in 2009. He was promoted to

serve as the interim head coach of the Eureka womens squad

I am more than happy to remove the interim label from J.L.

Zapusheks title and make him the head coach of our mens

soccer program, Eureka Director of Athletics Paul Bryant said in

February 2011. The progress our student-athletes showed after

his promotion was a testament to his coaching style and hard work.

Were excited to see the mens soccer team continue to improve in

its pursuit of a SLIAC championship.

Owning more than 800 victories as a club coach since his debut

in 1986, Zapushek has coached the Cougar Soccer Club, the

Metamora Select Soccer Club, the Sporting Futbol Club and FC

Peoria. He has also played a large role in building youth soccer

programs and facilities at the grade school, high school and park

district levels in central Illinois. Zapushek is also currently the

Director of Coaching for the FC Metro Select Lil Devils program in

    Eureka.

His daughter, K.T. Zapushek, ended her collegiate soccer career
