A Message From the General Manager

In Memory

Dr. Sam CarineMrs. Betty Denney

Dear Members of Scioto:

As August 18th came and went, a normal day to all but myself, it marked the beginning of my ninth year at Scioto Country Club. While the years have passed so quickly and the changes in the Club dramatic, the very essence of this Club has remained true to its roots, that being an outstanding golf experience coupled with a wonderful neighborhood family club.

As the number of staff this summer hit an all-time high of 350 individuals during my tenure, we are blessed with the number of quality associates working here and as a former teacher, it renews my faith in young people and the belief in the future of our community. Our department heads during this time period have remained constant and I am indebted to them for their efforts especially during the past four years of recession and construction. The various Presidents and Boards that I have worked with have allowed our staff to do the things necessary to operate the Club on a daily basis while providing a framework and financial support that enabled the staff to im-prove operations while managing costs. And the numerous committees have been very supportive and have given great amounts of their time to influence the change that has taken place.

While the number of members dropped during the great recession of 2008, the Club made strategic decisions that has positioned it well for the next generation. The dues increases (to full members) over the past few years have managed to somewhat offset these membership losses; in fact the 2011 dues and fees revenue are still $200K less than what was received in 2007 as we have learned to do more with less. Now that membership has stabilized and started to rebound with a net growth to date of 29 this year, the outlook is much brighter for the near future.

All of the improvements and the stature of the Club have not gone unnoticed by the general public, both in clubs and outside of clubs. We have been recognized locally as the finest club in central Ohio for the past three years as well as having the finest private golf course. The golf course renovation and the clubhouse renovation were named the most outstanding in the country by industry magazines upon their completions. This past week, Sci-oto was featured in the top golf magazine in China, GP Golf People, as a premier club in the United States. The Platinum Clubs of America, an independent private club rating service, has been ranking clubs in the pri-vate club industry since 1997. Their rankings, just released, have seen Scioto improve from just in the top 100 private country clubs in 2003, to now being ranked as the 24th best country club in the U.S. and best country club in Ohio. This rating of a “Platinum Club” is designated to only 235 clubs nationwide, from a number of more than 5000 private clubs that exist in the country. Clubs are rated by their various types such as city/dining clubs, yacht clubs, golf clubs, athletic clubs and country clubs. The clubs are rated on multiple aspects of pri-vate clubs such as quality of the membership, tradition and culture, amenities, governance and quality of man-agement and staff. To be ranked by your peers is truly a compliment. The Top 25 Clubs are included on the next page.

Lastly, the input from our membership over the past eight years has been instrumental in the development of our facilities, our programs and our culture. Once again, the membership will be sent an online survey early in September by SureVista that will duplicate some of the questions that were asked two years ago and will add some long range questions about various facilities. Please take the time to answer the questions and if you do not want an on-line version, a survey can be mailed to you. These surveys are anonymous and are tabulated by SureVista with only the results seen by the Trustees, committees and staff. An Executive Summary will be sent to the membership. Each member and spouse will be invited to respond to the survey. Thank you in ad-vance for the time dedicated to provide your input. More details about the survey will come in the mail.

So the summer comes to a close and the fall season is upon us. Your continued support of the Club and your involvement are much appreciated.

Best regards,

Gregory P. Wolf, CCM, CCEGeneral Manager

The first tee time for in season is 8:00 a.m. during the week and 7:30 a.m. on Fridays, weekends and holidays.

3. The practice areas will be open on Mondays from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm during June, July, August and September.

4. Practice area attire shall be the same as required on the golf course. Cell phone use is not permitted on any part of the practice area.

9. During the winter months when practice area mats are being utilized, no practice balls will be hit from the natural grass surfaces except on the winter practice tee inside the cart path in front of the north tee. The north tee chipping areas, bunker and putting green will be closed, but the south tee chipping areas, bunker and putting green will be open during this period.

Golf Course and Practice Area Attire for Members and Guests

1. Males - Sport shirts with collars, short or long sleeve mock turtlenecks, sweaters, slacks or appropriate length Ber-muda shorts, and spikeless shoes. Shirts are to be tucked into slacks or shorts. Parachute cargo pants and shorts, t-shirts of any kind, and tennis/coaching shorts are considered inappropriate golf attire. Gentlemen should always re-move caps or hats in the dining areas of the Clubhouse, including the Men’s Grille.

2. Females - Blouses, sweaters, skirts, slacks or appropriate length Bermuda shorts, and spikeless shoes. Tank tops and spaghetti strap tops are considered inappropriate.

Golf Cart Rules

1. Reservations for golf carts shall be on a first come, first serve basis through the Caddie Master using the starting time order.

2. All golf carts must be returned to the Caddie Master by dark.

3. Golf cart rental fees will be determined annually by the Board of Trustees.

4. Golf carts will not be rented to a member for single use unless circumstances, to be determined by the Caddie Master, so permit.

5. Anyone under 16 years of age is not permitted to use/drive golf carts.

6. Under no circumstances shall a golf cart be driven beyond the markers in front of a green, over a green, over a tee or between the apron of a green and an adjoining sand trap or bunker. The penalty for such ac-tions may be denying the offending member use of golf carts on the golf course, or other action by the Board of Trustees.

7. Golf carts are to be driven on paths whenever possible and never within 20 yards of any green.

8. No more than two persons are to ride in a golf cart at any time.

9. In general, a Scioto golfer, not a guest, is expected to drive a golf cart. When circumstances are such that a guest must drive, MEMBERS ARE EXPECTED TO FAMILIARIZE THAT GUEST WITH THE GOLF CART RULES.

10. Report any and all mechanical golf cart problems to the Caddie Master or Golf Shop Staff.

11. Please drive the golf cart as if you were the owner and please observe all cart signs placed by the Green Superin-tendent.

Pace of Play

“Slow play” is defined as a round exceeding 4 hours and 20 minutes when there is at least one hole open in front of the group. Starting times and finishing times are recorded. Penalties are as follows: 1) letter of reprimand; 2) one week sus-pension; 3) two week suspension; 4) three week suspension. To avoid SLOW PLAY, if you fall one hole behind, pick up and proceed to the next tee.

Please review these rules as we have many new members and want everyone to have a crystal clear understanding of what the rules are at Scioto Country Club. Please understand that we realize we have many rules, but we want each member to know and understand the rules, especially when entertaining guests. We expect each member to remind guests of all the rules when at the Club and especially those pertaining to golf cart traffic, speed of play and care of the golf course. Our final objective is to make sure each member has a clear understanding of taking care of and respecting our outstanding facility.Next month we will review in detail problems relating to care of the course, specifically raking bunkers, repairing ball marks and divots.

Regards,

Bill Stines, Head Golf Professional

A MESSAGE FROM THE GREENS DEPARTMENT

As the summer heat continues the greens department is starting to look towards fall and begin our recovery programs. On August 26th Port Columbus hit 90 degrees for the fourth straight day and that also marked the 45th day of 90 degrees or higher this year. That number ties us for 5th all-time in Co-lumbus (1953) for the number of 90-degree days in a summer.

With that being said, there are several maintenance practices that are used for improved turf. Aerification of greens and fairways are primary practices as well as reseeding any damaged areas. With the extended extreme heat, our weak grasses in the rough decline from disease and environmental stress. This is a positive because the stronger grasses are surviving while the weaker cultivars die out. The thin and dead areas are currently being seeded with a grass blend which will have a better chance of survival in these tough conditions. We have also done some seeding on the range tees to grow back in any used area.

As for the greens and fairway aerification, it’s part of our normal yearly plan. The general rule is to disturb about 20-30% of the surface area each year to maintain current conditions. The two largest areas of concern within the greens profile are pore space and organic matter. A healthy green contains about 50% pore space. Of that 50% pore space, half is water holding and the other half is air space (where the roots grow). If the percentage of water holding space increases too much, the roots will have no oxygen to grow and thereby suffocate. As a green ages the air pores become clogged with old dead roots and environmental contaminates such as dirt. The only way to create a new pore is to use a hollow tine and remove a core. As for organic matter we need to remain in a range between two and four percent of the total mix. If that number climbs too high (too much organic matter) and the surface becomes wet from rain or irrigation, the organic layer will swell up and seal off the top of the rootzone limiting air movement and again causing the plant to suffocate.

By doing these processes early we can shorten the interval of recovery and return playing conditions to normal much quicker. Once the greens have fully recovered we will begin to stress the Poa annua in our greens. We will do this by selectively treating with a herbicide which does not kill the desired bentgrass. These areas will be visible but should not affect ball roll when putting.

TENNIS NEWS

It is hard to believe that summer is coming to an end. What a great summer it was! We had the best summer so far with a high number of members and court usage during the season. We had over 130 ladies play GCTA tennis and over 100 Juniors go through our Junior Program. I could not have done it without my best staff yet. I am honored to be a part of such a great tradition at Scioto. Our members are second to none.

Our last and best events of the year were just held this month with the Ladies Member-Guest and the Men’s Invitational. Both were highly attended. We had all courts filled with the ladies and our largest Men’s event, due to a new “B” Flight Invitational. We are looking forward to build on this Men’s event.

Much thanks to Bob Becker and the Greens Department as well as our Food & Beverage Department for a great season.

I am looking forward to a great paddle season and some fun new events. Look for information in upcoming newsletters.

Always feel free to call me at 893-3366 or e-mail me at [email protected] with any questions about winter tennis at the Player’s Club or any paddle events.

Thanks again for a great season!
