*-Commonwealth Conference Game

Founded in 1856, Albright College celebrates a century and a half of a rich academic heritage in the liberal arts and professions and a dynamic, welcoming and collaborative campus community.

On 118 tree-lined acres, Albright is a place that connects people in an open, down-to-earth, collaborative community. With 1,650 undergraduate students, Albright’s small size ensures a 13:1 student/faculty ratio, close student/faculty relationships and an emphasis on the whole individual. Collaboration both in and outside of the classroom means students have extraordinary opportunities to work with, communicate with, and learn -- not only from faculty but many others with different perspectives and experiences.

At Albright, students have the ability to connect fields of study to create an individualized education. Today’s complex world demands the special perspective gained from an education that crosses boundaries to link knowledge, ideas, people and possibilities. Flexible thinkers, open to new ideas and able to commu-nicate are in demand in the job market. Connecting your interests and fields of learning can lead to new career possibilities.

At Albright, half of all students opt for combined or interdisciplinary major -- and still graduate in four years. Last year, students created more than 200 different combinations of majors - from art/biology to psychology/business and sociology/Latin American studies.

But whether you select a single major or combine fields of study, you will find that Albright faculty works closely with every student to create an individualized education that reflects individual talents, interests and career goals.

Albright offers more than 50 areas of study, a broad range of interdisciplinary programs including digital media, information systems, optics, Latin American studies, psychobiology, biochemistry, and environmental studies, and combined concentrations such as music/business for those interested in careers in the music industry. Albright’s long tradition of excellence in the natural sciences and pre-professional programs continues to prepare graduates for medical, dental, and veterinary school.

Undecided about a major? The unique Alpha Program is a structured program that allows students to explore different fields of interest and assess interests and talents before selecting a major (or majors.) Alpha provides academic guidance, activities, evens, peer support, career counseling and coursework in a wide variety of disciplines to help students make an informed choice when the time comes.

Shirk Stadium, dedicated in 1925 and home to the Albright Lions for over 80 years, underwent major renovations in 2005, turning it into one of the top Division III stadiums in the nation.

The original home grandstand, built nearly a century ago, was replaced with a new building that seats 3,000 spectators while providing locker rooms, training facilities, and a laundry room for the Lion football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and field hockey teams. A state-of-the-art press box sits atop the home grandstand, giving both visiting media and VIP’s a first-class place to watch the game. The natural-grass playing surface was replaced with A-turf, an artifical turf surface that will allow multi-sport play in the new stadium. The sta-dium also features top-of-the-line lighting that will allow for night games to be played throughout the year.

A new grandstand on the visitors’ side seats 2,000 spectators, giving Shirk Stadium a total seating capacity of 5,000. Standing room for specta-tors is also available at either end zone.

About Albright AthleticsThe athletics program at Albright College is geared to student-athletes who love their sport and want the freedom to explore everything college life has to offer.

Albright sponsors 23 sports teams on the varsity level, 11 for men and 12 for women, with more than 30 percent participation of the student body in intercollegiate athletics. The col-lege also supports four established club teams (deck hockey, men’s and women’s rugby, badminton, and ultimate frisbee) and a wide variety of seasonal intramurals.

Albright is a member of the 16-team Middle Atlantic Conference, arguably the nation’s strongest NCAA Division III conference. Because of that, student-athletes at Albright have the rare opportunity to compete on a high level and enjoy the benefits of the small-college environment. In addition to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and MAC, Albright is affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Albright coaches ask for dedication both on the fields and in the classrooms. Despite the challenge, many Lion athletes earn grade-point averages of 3.0 and above in a variety of pre-professional disciplines and distinctive programs. Clearly, Albright is about academic excellence, first and foremost.

The New Face of Albright Athletics

In the summer of 2009 the Albright College Athletic department signed with Internet Consulting Services to redesign the athletic website. After just a few short weeks, ICS pre-sented Albright with a top-notch website that truly shows what Lions athletics are all about.

.

In July of 2010 Albright College received a $1 million gift from the John K. Roessner III Trust to build a new multisport field.

The gift made possible the creation of a new field for lacrosse, as well as other sports and recreational activities.

John K. Roessner III of Bonita Springs, Fla. and West Harwich, Mass., an Albright College trustee and alumnus, is the presi-

dent of EJB Real Estate Associates Ltd. For nearly

four decades he was the president and chair of E.J.

Brooks Company, the world’s leading manufacturer

of indicative and barrier security seals for electric

utilities, transportation, government and healthcare.

About the gift Roessner said, “Lacrosse has

become a really popular sport and students have

asked for it. It is an immediate need and I’m de-

lighted I can help this portion of Albright’s strategic

plan.”

SeasonPreview

Varsity men’s lacrosse comes to Albright College for the first time ever this spring, and head coach Jake Plunket has assembled a squad of 30 players ready to make their mark in the Lions’ inaugural season.

Plunket comes to Reading after two years as an assistant coach at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. He previously won two Division I national championships as a player at Syracuse, and a Division III national title as an assistant coach with SUNY-Cortland.

With 26 freshmen, four sophomores and zero upperclassmen, the Lions will have perhaps the youngest roster in the nation. “We are looking to progress as a team and get better every day,” said Plunket.

“With no senior leadership ahead of them, these players have the opportunity to go out and compete right away and I think that’s something a young college kid really looks forward to.”

While green, Albright certainly isn’t lacking in talent or potential. In goal, Andrew Torak is an outstanding shot-stopper who faced top talent in high school. He is expected to get the start in the cage and will play a huge role as the Lions look to hang with the more experienced programs on their schedule.

Defensively, Cody Sandy comes from Homer High School in New York (Plunket’s alma mater) and will be counted on along with Sean Cunningham. Cunningham is a Drexel lacrosse transfer and a key player on Albright’s football team. “He will be a huge leader and a physical presence on the defensive end,” said Plunkett.

Michael Taggart is projected to start at long stick midfield, and is one of the most intelligent lacrosse players on the field. Challenging him is Joe Devinney, who also played football in the fall.

T.J. Holston, one of the most gifted players on the team, leads the midfield and is expected to play a variety of attacking positions this season. Freshman Bryan Smith, a high school All-Conference selection in both lacrosse and soccer, brings outstanding natural athleticism to the middle of the field.

Key players at attack will include Philip Potter and Nicholas Pisko. With his shifty mobility and great vision Potter, who was looked at by Division I programs, has the potential to be one of the best at-tacking players in the MAC. Pisko is a big player who can dodge and brings a cannon shot.

Yet another football player, Darian Meador, will be Albright’s main faceoff man. Dan Foote joins the squad from Ontario, Canada and is one of the best finishers on the team.

The Red and White will play its inaugural game on February 28 at Hood College, against a team that will be playing its fourth contest of the 2012 season. Albright’s first-ever home game will be on March 3 against Penn State-Abington.

The Lions will prepare for a difficult Commonwealth Conference that includes perennial contenders Widener, Messiah and Elizabethtown with a challenging non-conference schedule. Albright plays solid teams like Gwynedd-Mercy and Susquehanna, and will also travel to Virginia over spring break to face two newer programs- Randolph and Ferrum.

“There are no easy teams in the Commonwealth,” said Plunket. “Right now we are trying to establish the culture that we want, and hoping that the young guys can step up and take the reins a little bit.”

Jake PlunketHead Coach - 1st Season

Jake Plunket was named the first head varsity men’s lacrosse coach at Albright College in September of

2010. As the first varsity lacrosse head coach, he will be responsible for building the program from the

ground up. Albright lacrosse, a club sport since 1994, will become a varsity level sport in fall of 2011. The

team will begin competition in the spring of 2012 and will host all their contests in Shirk Stadium.

Plunket’s appointment comes just two months after Albright College announced a $1 million dollar gift

from the John K. Roessner III Trust to underwrite the start-up costs for both men’s and women’s lacrosse

programs, as well as the construction of a new multisport grass practice field.

A native of upstate New York, Plunket holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Syracuse University. He comes to Al-

bright after a standout playing and coaching career. As a player, Plunket was a four-year member of the Syracuse University men’s

lacrosse team. During his time with the Orange, Plunket led his squad

to two Division I national titles and was named team captain in 2005.

In 2005 he joined the coaching staff of Division III powerhouse SUNY

Cortland, and worked primarily with the team’s defense.

During his three seasons at Cortland, Plunket played a major part in

leading the Red Dragons to two conference tournament championships,

three NCAA tournament appearances, and a 2006 national title. He also

coached 16 All-Americans as well as numerous all-conference selec-

tions.

In 2008, Plunket became assistant coach at Hampden-Sydney College.

During his two-year stint with the Tigers, he was actively involved in the

recruitment of athletes, coordinated offensive strategies and assisted

with the team’s defense and goalies. After finishing the 2009 season

with an 8-9 record overall, Plunket helped to lead the Tigers to a pro-

gram best 13-win season in 2010.

Coaching Staff

Joey SevernsAssistant Coach

Joey Severns was named the first assistant coach in the history of the men’s lacrosse program in June. Severns came to Albright from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where he spent the previous year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

As assistant to head coach Jake Plunket, Severns will be responsible for all aspects of developing the Al-bright men’s lacrosse program. His duties include recruiting future players and working with coach Plunket on all facets of practice and game-day planning.

During his season with the Yeomen, Severns helped the program to a 7-9 record, which included a three-game win streak to close out the 2011 campaign. Under head coach Topher Grossman, who was named the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Coach of the Year, Severns was responsible for reviewing game film and coming up with game-day strategy and practice plans. Working primarily with the defense, Severns played a major part in helping the Yeomen hold nationally ranked Wittenberg University to less than 10 goals this past season.

Severns’ collegiate career began in upstate New York, where he was a starting attackman and team captain at SUNY Morrisville. As the team’s leader, Severns led the Mustangs to their first winning season in over five years, and received both conference and regional honors.

Following the 2006 season, Severns transferred to Virginia to play for Coach Plunket at Hampden-Sydney College. Under Plunket, who at the time was an assistant coach, Severns helped the Tigers to their first top-20 national ranking and a program-best 13 wins in his senior season.

Severns, who resides in Reading, Pa., graduated from Hampden-Sydney in May 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in history.

Jeromy CurryAssistant Coach

Jeromy Curry joined the Albright College men’s lacrosse coaching staff in the fall of 2011, prior to the Lions’ inaugural season. He played at Commonwealth Conference rival Widener as an undergrad, where he was a four-year member of the lacrosse team.

He then coached at Boyertown High School, first as an assistant and later as the head coach, leading his team to four straight league playoff berths and two District 1 playoff appearances.

Dave LamontAssistant Coach

Dave Lamont joined the Albright College men’s lacrosse staff as an assistant coach for the team’s inau-gural 2012 season. He graduated from West Chester in 2005, and was a member of the NCLL national runner-up team there.

Lamont previously served as an assistant coach at Boyertown High School, under current Albright assis-tant Jeromy Curry.
