Founded in 1856, Albright College celebrates a century and a half of a rich academic heritage in the liberal arts and professions and a dynamic, welcoming and collaborative campus community.

On 118 tree-lined acres, Albright is a place that connects people in an open, down-to-earth, collaborative community. With 1,650 undergraduate students, Albright’s small size ensures a 13:1 student/faculty ratio, close student/faculty relationships and an emphasis on the whole individual. Collaboration both in and outside of the classroom means students have extraordinary opportunities to work with, communicate with, and learn -- not only from faculty but many others with different perspectives and experiences.

At Albright, students have the ability to connect fields of study to create an individualized education. Today’s complex world demands the special perspective gained from an education that crosses boundaries to link knowledge, ideas, people and possibilities. Flexible thinkers, open to new ideas and able to commu-nicate are in demand in the job market. Connecting your interests and fields of learning can lead to new career possibilities.

At Albright, half of all students opt for combined or interdisciplinary major -- and still graduate in four years. Last year, students created more than 200 different combinations of majors - from art/biology to psychology/business and sociology/Latin American studies.

But whether you select a single major or combine fields of study, you will find that Albright faculty works closely with every student to create an individualized education that reflects individual talents, interests and career goals.

Albright offers more than 50 areas of study, a broad range of interdisciplinary programs including digital media, information systems, optics, Latin American studies, psychobiology, biochemistry, and environmental studies, and combined concentrations such as music/business for those interested in careers in the music industry. Albright’s long tradition of excellence in the natural sciences and pre-professional programs continues to prepare graduates for medical, dental, and veterinary school.

Undecided about a major? The unique Alpha Program is a structured program that allows students to explore different fields of interest and assess interests and talents before selecting a major (or majors.) Alpha provides academic guidance, activities, evens, peer support, career counseling and coursework in a wide variety of disciplines to help students make an informed choice when the time comes.

About Albright AthleticsThe athletics program at Albright College is geared to student-athletes who love their sport and want the freedom to explore everything college life has to offer.

Albright sponsors 23 sports teams on the varsity level, 11 for men and 12 for women, with more than 30 percent participation of the student body in intercollegiate athletics. The col-lege also supports four established club teams (deck hockey, men’s and women’s rugby, badminton, and ultimate frisbee) and a wide variety of seasonal intramurals.

Albright is a member of the 16-team Middle Atlantic Conference, arguably the nation’s strongest NCAA Division III conference. Because of that, student-athletes at Albright have the rare opportunity to compete on a high level and enjoy the benefits of the small-college environment. In addition to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and MAC, Albright is affiliated with the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC).

Albright coaches ask for dedication both on the fields and in the classrooms. Despite the challenge, many Lion athletes earn grade-point averages of 3.0 and above in a variety of pre-professional disciplines and distinctive programs. Clearly, Albright is about academic excellence, first and foremost.

The New Face of Albright Athletics

AlbrightAthletics.com

In the summer of 2009 the Albright College Athletic department signed with Internet Consulting Services to redesign the athletic website. After just a few short weeks, ICS pre-sented Albright with a top-notch website that truly shows what Lions athletics are all about.

The George C.Bollman Center

ALBRIGHTATHLETICS.COM 4

The Albright Lions practice and play in one of the finest small-college basketball venues in the nation, the George C. Bollman Center. The addition of the Schumo Center for Fitness and Well-Being was built onto the Bollman Center in the summer of 2007, further enhancing the athletic facilities.

The Bollman Arena was completely renovated in 1998 and 1999. The interior of the structure was replaced, and new mechanized bleachers now comple-ment the sparkling playing floor. The bleachers include 240 VIP chair-back seats located at center court on both sides. The walls and ceiling are painted bright Albright red and white. Championship banners have been hung, and a $25,000 sound system was installed, and in the summer of 2007, a brand new floor was installed. Finally, Albright is one of the few small colleges to boast an electronic 24-foot rotating signage scorer's table. The campaign to renovate the Bollman Arena was spearheaded by former Albright basketball player John Scholl '69.

The Schumo Center for Fitness and Well-Being opened in the fall of 2007. The new building was made possible with a $4.75 million gift from Margaret K. Schumo of Wyomissing, Pa., and her daughter Cynthia Lynn. It features a cardiovascular fitness room; a weight room; an aerobic room; a nutrition class-room; conference space; offices; locker rooms; an atrium; and the Schumo Cafe, a cafe featuring healthy snacks. The Schumo Center also houses the main athletic offices.

SeasonPreview

ALBRIGHTATHLETICS.COM5

The Albright College volleyball team enters their 2010 campaign looking to continue to improve under the guidance of a new coach, Mike Marks. Last season, the Lions posted a 15-14 overall record. This season, the Lions return nearly every member of the 2009 team, losing only two play-ers to graduation.

Leading the pack for the Lions will be outside hitter Danielle Ozment. A year ago, Ozment tormented opposing challengers at the net, blasting spike after spike and recording 273 kills while doing so. The senior also is a threat on the back line with her talented service ability.

Working to get Ozment the ball will be senior setter Lauren Higgins. Higgins will try to break her own personal best of 736 assists, a mark she set last fall. If Higgins is able to top last year’s mark, she will have put together a very solid four-year run for the Lions at the setter position.

A trio of sophomores will join Ozment at outside hitter and look to lead the Lions’ offensive attack. Alyssa Hoogendoorn, Michelle LaRocque and Alexa Jones will be setting themselves up for Higgins’ passes to challenge the opposition’s defense with hard spikes. They gained much needed experience last season, and look to turn that experience into big numbers for the red and white.

Laura van Bendegem and Shawna Hackman make up the dynamic duo in the middle. Bendegem is a junior and Hackman is a sophomore; they both stand over 6 feet tall. They will challenge the net and pound spikes, making them an integral part of the Lions’ success this fall.

Two seniors and two sophomores will captain the Lions’ defense from the back middle. Kelly Nicodemus and Jill Bonitatibus have three years’ experience in the defensive specialist position and should have no problem directing the red and white when their opponents are on the attack.

Casey McFadden and Erin Wentzel will gain experience and knowledge from the seniors to give the Lions a solid defensive foundation for years to come.

Finally, at right side hitter, the Lions have another talented tall junior in Meg Wheeler, who also stands over 6 feet tall and will take the sets of her teammates and drill the ball home for the red and white.

A talented nucleus of returners and a strong incoming freshman class set the Lions up for another season of improvement and maybe even a spot in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs. Either way, the Bollman Center will be an exciting place to be when the volleyball team hits the court.

CoachingStaff

Michael MarksInterim Head Coach

1st Season

Michael Marks is in his first season as interim head coach with the Albright College Volleyball program. For the past two season Marks served as the Lady Lions assistant coach.

In his two season as an assistant Marks played a crucial part in helping the Lions to one of the biggest turn-arounds in program history. After posting just five wins in 2008, Marks helped the Lady Lions become a 15 wins team just a year later.

A teacher of all aspects of the game, Marks has worked with some of the top volleyball players to come out of Berks County. This season, he will once again look to not only for a winning record, but to take the Lady Lions to the conference tournament and further.

As a head coach Marks believes in teaching the fundamentals of the game to all of his players in hopes that it will make them more well rounded student-athletes. Since taking over as the head coach, Marks has brought a new intensity to the Lady Lions bench. This new passion should truly give the red and white the edge they need this fall as they compete against some tough conference and non-conference opponents.

A former collegiate head coach at Alvernia University from 1996-2003, Marks is currently coaching the J-Stroke Volleyball club in Mohnton, PA. A Berks County resident, Marks graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1967.

From there he attended St. Gregory’s Junior College in Shawnee, OK from 1967-1969. He would then spend three more years attending St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX before returning to Pennsylvania.

In 1985 he took over as the Assistant and then Head Coach at Central Catholic High School and remained there until 1991.
