HEAD COACH DAWNA DENNY

Head coach Dawna Denny is in her sixth season guiding the Penn State women’s tennis team. Denny is 36-78 in her tenure at Penn State and 101-154 in ten seasons as a head coach.

Denny coached the Nittany Lions to exceptional play this past fall. She coached Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting to the main draws of the ITA All-American Championships in California. Ja-nuskova and Utting teamed to defeat the No. 35 ranked duo in the nation, Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith of TCU, while Ja-nuskova also knocked out No. 20 Aeriel Ellis of Texas in singles competition. She also coached Januskova to her victory in the ITA Atlantic Regional which gave her automatic entry into the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship in New York.

Last season, Denny led the Nittany Lions to a 12-11 record where the finished with a No. 2 ranking in the region. She coached Petra Januskova to the first team All-Big Ten for the sec-ond straight year as well as Chelsea Utting to the second team All-Big Ten in her first season as a Nittany Lion. The Lions fin-ished ranked No. 51 in the national polls and Januskova finished with a No. 76 singles ranking.

In the 2010-2011 season, under Denny, Januskova became the first Nittany Lion to make first team All-Big Ten since Maaria Husain in the 2004-05 season. Januskova started the 2010-11 sea-son No. 81 in the Preseason ITA rankings, the first Penn State player to accomplish the feat since 1989. Denny led the Nit-tany Lions to an individual runner-up finish at the ITA Atlantic Regional (Petra Januskova), as well as the singles and doubles crowns at the WMU Super Challenge.

Prior to coming to Happy Valley, Denny was an assistant coach at Baylor University where in addition to Big 12 regular-season and tournament titles, she helped the Bears to a berth in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. The Bears, who peaked at No. 6 in the national rankings, finished the season 13th in the ITA poll. Denny coached two All-America singles players, including Zuzana Zemenova, who was a semifinalist in the 2007 NCAA Singles Championship. At Baylor, Denny was heavily involved in player development, recruiting, travel, scheduling, fundraising and budgeting.

Prior to joining the staff at Baylor, Denny was the head coach of the women’s tennis program at her alma mater North Texas for six seasons, accumulating the second-most wins by any women’s

tennis coach in North Texas history. The Mean Green posted the most wins in 17 years with 15 victories in the 2004 campaign. Denny also helped her alma mater reach the highest regional ranking (13th) in school history that same season. During her ten-ure with the Mean Green, Denny coached three players to Sun Belt Player of the Week honors and led North Texas to ITA All-Academic Team awards in 2003 and 2004.

In addition to coaching at Baylor and North Texas, Denny served on the Southwest Regional ITA committee (2002-06). She also organized a USTA community service clinic in 2006 and was the tournament director for the Texas Regional High School Tournament from 2001-06.

Denny, who earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from North Texas in 2000, was a four-year letter winner for the Mean Green and served as team captain in 1998 and 1999. Denny was an all-conference performer in doubles in 1996 and was an active member of the North Texas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during her four years as a member of the women’s ten-nis squad.

In her first two seasons at North Texas, Denny tallied a 12-15 record and then moved into the No. 1 singles spot for her junior and senior years. Throughout her collegiate tennis career, she was the Big West Female Scholar Athlete of the Year and was named to the Raptor All-Eagle Academic Team. Denny earned North Texas’ Team Eagle award twice for best work ethic/team spirit.

Denny has served on the ITA Mid-Atlantic committee for the past three years.

ASSISTANT COACH MIKE FENWICK

Fenwick is in his third season as an assistant coach. Fen-wick came to Happy Valley after spending the 2009-10 season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Baylor men’s tennis team.

Last year he helped coach the Nittany Lions to a 12-11 record including four wins against ranked opponents.

As a volunteer assistant coach, Fenwick helped the Bay-lor Bears to a No. 7 ranking in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll with a 24-7 record. The Bears also landed two singles players and three doubles teams in the national rankings. Additionally, Fenwick taught tennis classes for the health, human performance and recreation department at Baylor and served as an in-structor at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.

Prior to his tenure at Baylor, Fenwick spent four years as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs

at Western Illinois. He helped guide the Leathernecks to the Summit League regular-season title in 2008, the program’s first regular-season conference title. Fen-wick also had a hand in producing a Mid-Con Men’s Newcomer of the Year, a Mid-Con Men’s Player of the Year and 10 men’s and women’s all-conference selec-tions while in Macomb. The WIU men also claimed the 2006 Mid-Con Tournament title and earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 2006.

Fenwick graduated from Western Illinois University in 2006 with a degree in business management. He

also earned his master’s degree from WIU in recreation, park and tourism administration in 2009. Fenwick played tennis at Quincy University in 2004-05 after spending time at Sauk Valley Community College (2002-03) and Illinois Valley Community College (2003-04). Fenwick’s brother, Chad, is the director of tennis/head men’s and women’s coach for Ashford University.

Fenwick was a teaching tennis professional in his native Dixon, Ill. He has also worked summer tennis camps run by the Naval Academy and Pepperdine University.

RETURNING PLAYERS

The Penn State women’s tennis team returns five players from its 2011-12 roster.

Penn State is led by seniors Petra Januskova and Sarah Hen-derson. Januskova had an outstanding 2012 season that saw her finish ranked No. 76 in the ITA singles rankings. She led the Nittany Lions with a 30-8 singles record in the No. 1

spot. Januskova returns for her senior year after being named first team All-Big Ten two years in a row.

Denny describes Hender-son as an excellent leader in the sense of her never waver-ing positivity, whether it’s in practice, competition or conditioning.

Juniors on the Nittany Lion roster are Marie-Frederique Bedard, Carmen Sandor and Chelsea Utting. Thanks to Be-dard’s never-give-up attitude and eagerness to learn, she earned fifteen singles victo-ries in her second season with

Penn State, including 3 wins over ranked opponents. According to Denny, “the sky is the limit” for a player like

Sandor. As a freshman, she tallied both a three and four match win streak during the season. Last year, Sandor won nine singles and eight doubles matches.

Chelsea Utting also brings experience to the squad after fin-ishing last season with 20 wins, the second most singles wins on the team. Her 21 doubles wins were tied with Petra for the team lead also.

Three of Penn State’s five returning players were named to the ITA All-Academic team this year. Additionally, this marks the fourth time in five years Penn State’s team as a whole has made the list. Individual winners must be varsity letter win-ners and maintain at least a 3.50 GPA.

TALENTED NEWCOMERS

The 2012-2013 Penn State team features three new fresh-men on its roster. Devan McCluskey comes to Happy Valley from England where she was homeschooled. Devan ranked as high as No. 3 in the U-18 national rankings in the UK. She won several tournaments including the Grade 2 Winchester Final.

Another nexcomer to the team is Katherine Whiteaway who also comes to Penn State from England. Katherine at-tended Queenswood, a school known for their outstanding hockey and tennis programs. She captained the team for two years, leading them to the championship both years. She also ranked No.1 in her county’s U-18 rankings last year on her way to winning the county’s tournament.

Jacqueline Zuhse is the final newcomer on the team this season. She hails from Florida where she attended an online high school while traveling for junior tennis. Zuhse traveled to many different countries playing in ITF tournaments where she had a career ranking of 485.

BUILDING OFF OF THE FALL

Several Nittany Lions made great strides during the 2012 Fall season. Entering the season Januskova was ranked No. 52 in the preseason ITA poll and was selected to play in the All-American Championships in California where she topped No. 20 Aeriel Ellis of Texas. Januskova also brought home the singles crown at the ITA Atlantic Regionals in Blacksburg, Va. With the victory she was awarded automatic entry into the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y.

Chelsea Utting was also ranked in the preseason at No. 42 in the doubles poll with Januskova and competed in the All-American Championships. Utting and Januskova defeated the No. 35 doubles pair consisting of Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith.

Carmen Sandor set her new career high for the fall season with eight singles victories and nine total wins for the season. Along the way she took home two back draw titles, winning at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational and the Tribe Invitational.

Penn State also found success with their three newcomers. In their first fall with as Nittany Lions the trio finished 13-13 in singles matches. Devan McCluskey led the way with six singles victories.

COMPETITIVE SCHEDULE

As a member of the Big Ten, the Nittany Lions will con-tinually face some of the toughest competition in the na-tion. Eight members of the Big Ten, not including Penn State, finished last season in the Top 75 of the ITA rankings. 11 of Penn State’s 21 opponents for the 2013 season finished the season in the ITA Top 75. Penn State will play seven of their scheduled 11 ranked teams away from University Park, Pa.

RECRUITING

Penn State continues its out-look on recruiting by finding athletes that are able to succeed on and off the court.

“It is imperative that the coaching staff recruit players who have a strong desire to improve and develop their game to the next level,” said Denny. “We are looking for student-athletes who love the challenges of the game and who expect growth in their game. The Penn State family focuses on the complete student-athlete. Our strong academic traditions speak for themselves and we welcome those expectations of recruiting the student-athletes who will uphold our academic and ath-letic traditions on and off the court. I believe it is a privilege to wear blue and white.”

2011-2012 SEASON – JUNIOR: Compiled a 17-6 singles record ... Earned wins over two ranked opponents; No. 14 Diana Nakic of No. 6 Baylor and No. 111 Kim Berghaus of UMBC ... Eight of her singles victories came over opponents on ranked teams... Started the season on a 12-match singles win streak, in which she only lost one set the entire streak ... Was an unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team, the second year in a row she was given such distinction ... Voted Big Ten Athlete of the Week during the week of Jan. 10 ... Was ranked in the ITA singles poll for the entire season, peaking at No. 43 ... Tallied a 14-9 doubles record ... Went 12-5 when she partnered with Chelsea Utting ... Teamed with Utting to defeat No. 40 Stefanie Weinstein and Madeleine Geibert, 8-7, of No. 18 Nebraska ... Ranked No. 84 during the week of April 10 with Utting.

2011 FALL: Entered the season ranked No. 108 in ITA Pre-season Poll … Tallied a 20-5 combined singles and doubles record … Finished 13-2 in singles matches … Only two sin-gles losses came to ranked opponents, No. 36 Emily Fraser of Virginia and No. 100 Jackie Wuu of Vanderbilt … Earned the singles crown and a second-place finish at the Cissie Leary Invitational, going an undefeated 5-0 in singles play and 3-1 in doubles action with partner Nina Sertic … Named Big Ten Athlete of the week for the week of Sept. 28th, becoming the first Nittany Lion to earn the honor since Sasha Abraham in April 2007 … Represented the Nittany Lions in the ITA All-American Tournament … Won the singles title at the WMU Super Challenge for the second year in a row, going 3-0 in her matches … Earned a 7-3 doubles record with her partner Nina Sertic … Defeated No. 48 Li Xi and Maria Fuccillo of Virginia, 8-4 at the ITA Regional Tournament.

THE SARNI TENNIS CENTER

Penn State opened the new Sarni Tennis Center in Septem-ber of 1998 and held its first night match against Bloomsbug in April, 1999.

The Sarni Tennis Center is a $2.3 million facility that in-cludes seven lighted courts, a stadium court with seating for 1,000 fans, a team clubhouse with locker rooms, meeting and video rooms and a racket stringing area. The Sarni Tennis Center received the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Outstanding Tennis Facility Award in 1999.

WHAT DOES SARNI MEAN FOR PENN STATE TENNIS?

It means night matches under the stadium lights. Penn State can now schedule evening matches, which are a crowd favorite. The stadium lighting is state of the art.

It means tradition. Through a combination of display cases, banners, etc., the Sarni Center will proudly recognize the achievements of past players, NCAA qualifiers, All-Big Ten picks, Academic All-Americans and so on.

It means great visibility on campus. Located in the central part of campus and adjacent to the Bigler Sports Fields, Sarni will be a highly visible facility for the entire Penn State com-munity. This will encourage the Penn State faculty, staff and students as well as the centre County community to catch the tennis fever by watching practices and attending matches.

To the players, it means “excitement.” Banners flying high above the stadium court, the beautiful Nittany Mountains and the Bryce Jordan Center as the backdrop and the majestic team clubhouse overlooking the courts. What more could a player ask for in a practice and competition site? Sarni repre-sents a big-time facility in a superb location.

THE MAKING OF THE DREAM

Vincent and Sandra Sarni started the ball rolling with their gift of $675,000 to the construction of the $2.3 million

facility.

Vincent Sarni, a retired chairman and chief executive of-ficer of PPG Industries and his wife are tennis enthusiasts. Neither of the Sarnis is a Penn State graduate, although both have been supporters of academic and athletic programs at the University and both have had children attend Penn State.

In addition to the gift from the Sarni family, approximately $500,000 in University funding went into the project, which will also provide for student use of the facility.

- The Penn State tennis team uses six outdoor Plexi-cushion courts and four indoor Decoturf courts.- The indoor facility, one of the finest in the East, has four courts with an 800-seat elevated gallery, office, pro shop and locker rooms.- The complex is used for matches and team and individual practices.- With the availibility of the indoor courts, the team does not lose valuable practice time or have matches cancelled or postponed.
