PETER JOHANN PETER JOHANN MEMORIAL FIELDMEMORIAL FIELD

The dedication of Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field during the 1983 season marked a special occasion for all those who were involved with the building of UNLV’s fi rst on-campus soccer facility. Despite the fact that UNLV soccer has been around since 1974, Rebel teams in the past never truly had a “home fi eld” to call their own. And, when former men’s soccer head coach Barry Barto assumed his position prior to the 1982 season, building an on-campus soccer fi eld became a priority. Barto approached then-athletics director Brad Rothermel to work out a solution to the problem and the two settled on the current location, where the old softball fi eld had previously existed. Once the site was fi nalized, a huge community effort was instrumental in the building of the soccer fi eld. The fi eld is named after the late son of Kenneth F. Johann, a real estate businessman who has lived in Las Vegas for more than 40 years. Johann has been a strong

supporter of Rebel soccer and he and his wife, Alice, set up a scholarship fund in memory of their son. Thus, Johann was more than happy to be a part of the overall community effort. Johann Field played host to the 1983 ISAA Senior Bowl All-Star Game where the West team posted a 4-0 victory. Numerous international matches have also been played on its pitch and it is also the site of the annual UNLV/Nike Soccer Classic for both the men’s and women’s squads. The facility has also played host to three Las Vegas Soccer Spectaculars. The inaugural contest in 2002 featured the WUSA’s San Jose CyberRays and the San Diego Spirit, while in the spring of 2003, the Boston Breakers took on San Jose. The fi nal spectacular was in March of 2003, between UNLV and the Mexican Olympic Team, who had just claimed a spot in the 2004 Athens Games. In the spring of 2007, a sellout crowd watched the fi rst-ever MLS contest on the UNLV

campus, as Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids played to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition contest on March 31. In 2004, the UNLV men’s soccer team posted its 125th victory at the site, achieving the milestone in the second to last game of the year. The Rebels eclipsed the century mark in 174 games over 16 years. With the addition of endzone seats in 1997, the grandstands now offer seating for approximately 2,500 spectators in an open seating arrangement, and the facility boasts natural grass, a press box, and lights for night matches. The facility was most recently upgraded during the summer of 2006, as a $300,000 renovation led to a new irrigation system as well as new sod and grass for the fi eld. Generally regarded as one of the top college soccer facilities in the West, Johann Field celebrates its 29th season in 2011.

The Rebel Alumni Park, dedicated in 2002, was made possible by the efforts of alumni and friends of the Rebel soccer program.

UNLV soccer’s strength and condi t ion ing program, under the guidance of Jason Kabo, is geared toward developing student-athletes’ athletic potential through a program that includes strength, speed, fl exibility, conditioning and nutrition. Featuring an individualized conditioning regimen, players follow

a year-round system stressing the development of strength, power and speed. Jason Kabo, Jodi Sabataso and

Mike Gerber are responsible for the year-round training of men and women student-athletes from all 17 varsity sports. The Ernie Becker Sr. Strength and Conditioning Center’s 8,500-square-foot deck features free weights, power racks and Olympian platforms.

The 1,200-square-foot second level offers stretching and aerobic areas catered to each sport. The room also features a premium sound system to further enhance the workout experience.

Providing the best possible preventative and rehabilitative care, the UNLV soccer athletic training staff is headed by Director of Athletic Training Kyle Wilson. The trainer for this year’s team is Bernie Chavies.

Made possible by a generous gift of $1.5 million by Marilyn and Si Redd, the Lied Athletic complex’s athletic training facility incorporates the total scope of sports medicine over an 8,500-square-foot area.

Aside from fi ve staff offi ces, a rehabilitation room houses a dozen pieces of equipment including Cybex stationary bicycles, stair machines and treadmills, all under a natural skylight.

The largest area features a dozen tables to offer student-athletes various treatments throughout the day. Taping, padding and bracing all take place in another all-inclusive room.

Finally, an aquatic therapy room features three above-ground whirlpools surrounding a 10-feet deep pool for rehabilitative exercises.

All of these features make it possible for UNLV student-athletes to rehabilitate injuries without ever needing to leave the confi nes of the Lied Athletic Complex.

Other amenities include a physician’s offi ce and exam room to provide daily medical service for student-athletes. A drug-testing facility also is part of the complex. This expedites medical care because the student-athletes’ health care is self-contained.

Also, UNLV’s academic program and its student athletic training benefi t from a sports medicine library, study room and conference facility.

The Marilyn & Si Redd Sports Medicine Complex sprawls over an 6,500-square-foot area.

The 2011 UNLV men’s soccer season marks the 37th year in which the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship will benefi t a Las Vegas native on the team. Freshman forward Salvador Bernal of Clark High School in Las Vegas is this year’s scholarship recipient. He is the son of Salvador Bernal and Rosa Flores. Since 1974, the UNLV men’s soccer program has been quite fortunate to have the support of Las Vegas businessman Ken Johannand his wife, Alice. It was that fall in 1974 when the Johanns’ son, Peter, died in a sporting accident. The next fall, the Johanns decided to honor their late son with a memorial scholarship. Established in 1975, the Peter Johann Memorial Scholarship assists one deserving student-athlete in attending classes at UNLV while participating in intercollegiate soccer. The scholarship is awarded to the student-athlete each season who demonstrates excellence in six areas: academic performance, techniques and tactics of soccer, team loyalty, cooperation, leadership and endurance. In return for their generosity, UNLV’s fi rst-ever on-campus soccer fi eld was dedicated to the memory of Peter Johann when it was built on the north side of the campus in 1983. The Rebels have called Peter Johann Memorial Field home for the past 28 years. Ken Johann and 2011 recipient Salvador Bernal

Former Rebel standout Rich Ryerson was named the fi fth head

men’s soccer coach in UNLV program history on April 7, 2010. He took over the helm of the program after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach under former Rebel coach Mario Sanchez. “It’s a dream come true, to become head coach at my alma mater,” said Ryerson. “UNLV has made such a big impact on my life, it’s been the foundation for everything I’ve accomplished and experienced in the sport of soccer.”

In his fi rst year as the Rebels’ head coach, Ryerson took a team that had 11 newcomers and coached it to a 6-11-2 mark. Seven of the 11 losses were by one goal, and UNLV pulled off several impressive victories, including a win at Stanford and both a win and tie against MPSF Mountain champion Denver. Just as important as the wins was Ryerson’s fundraising accomplishments, as he was able to help UNLV secure an $850,000 donation from the Englestad foundation, as well as other donations to help ensure the stability of the men’s program at UNLV for the next fi ve years.

One of four Ryerson brothers to play for the Rebels (Rob, Kenny, Tim), Rich Ryerson was a four-year starting defender/midfi elder for the Rebels from 1983-86 and led UNLV to three NCAA tournament appearances and three straight conference championships during his time in Las Vegas. In his junior season,

the Rebels posted a program-best 18-2-2 mark and No. 4 fi nal national ranking. A two-time all-region and all-conference selection, Ryerson scored 20 goals and had 20 assists. Ryerson started all 84 games during his time as a Rebel and still holds school records for both most career games played and most career starts. Ryerson was also named one of Soccer America’s Top-10 Freshmen of the Year in 1983.

Ryerson graduated from UNLV in 1987 with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration. He went on to play a total of 10 years in several professional soccer leagues, including two in Kinna, Sweden, and fi nished his career in 1998 with the Baton

to play together as a team on the fi eld. They really made a strong statement with their actions on and off the fi eld.” All four of those players earned all-conference honors during 2010. While Sifuentes is gone, graduated after scoring a team-high 15 points last year, the other three all return to once again pace the Rebels on the fi eld. “Marshall, Espinoza, Mota, they all had the chance to leave for somewhere else but they choose to stay and honor their commitment to UNLV, and from what they gained in maturity and leadership and dealing with a hard situation, that will pay off over the next few years. I expect a very bright future for them.” It’s not just the aforementioned trio that has Ryerson optimistic about the 2011 season, but his overall increased depth on the team. “We have depth in the midfi eld this year, we have depth on the backline - that’s something I couldn’t call upon last year,” said Ryerson. The experience on the backline will also allow Ryerson to switch up the team’s formation this year to a 4-4-2, after playing three on the line in 2010.

FORWARDS With increased goal scoring a priority in 2011, the forwards will be looked at to answer the challenge. And the Rebels know they have one player that will step up to the call, fi rst team All-MPSF junior Nick Marshall, who is one of the biggest keys to the team this year. “Marshall brings a lot of personality on and off the fi eld, the kind of personality a team needs to have success, especially on offense with his confi dence in his ability. He has great explosiveness over a short distance, allowing him to get open for goals,” said Ryerson. Marshall posted 19 points as a freshman and followed that with 12 points in 2011, off fi ve goals and two assists. Two players looking to challenge for starting roles up top are sophomore Joaquin Rivas and freshman Salvador Bernal, both Las Vegas natives. Rivas recorded fi ve points in 2010, including a golden goal, while Bernal was one of the surprises of the preseason. “Rivas has a powerful left foot and is already a threat to score for us when he’s on the fi eld, while Bernal is one of the quickest players on the team, while also possessing a good fi nishing touch,” said Ryerson. Also returning is junior Robert Garcia (15 starts and four points in 2010), a quick and creative player on the attack, and sophomore Rory Emslie, who gives UNLV a a physical presence on the fi eld at the position. Another newcomer is Israel Lopez, the fi rst-ever northern Nevada (Carson City) native in the UNLV men’s soccer program.

MIDFIELDERS This is a group that developed very nicely over the past year, with returning starters and juniors Espinoza, Zach Kupfer and sophomore Jose Mendoza coming back after a year of playing together in the midfi eld. “These three players saw extensive playing time last year, we relied on their ability to control the game on the fi eld and expect to see them take more control of the fl ow this season,” said Ryerson. Espinoza, a second-team All-MPSF pick in 2010 after scoring four goals and posting 10 points, is the playmaker of the group. “Once he started to understand the importance of his role on the fi eld, he really took over and became a key player for us on the fi eld last season,” said Ryerson. Zupfer meanwhile played more of a defensive role last season, but will be returning to an attacking position in 2011. That’s a spot he’s had success in before for the Rebels, as he scored 13 points as a freshman off fi ve goals and three assists, showing why he’s considered one of the best fi nishers on the team. The third returnee, Mendoza, was the only freshman to start in all 19 games last year, and will be looked at as the Rebels’ holding midfi elder this season after scoring one goal a season ago. The other returnee is sophomore Shane Panther, who saw limited time in seven games in 2010. The Rebels added one newcomer to the group, Julian Portugal of

The number one priority for most new head coaches usually the same, to win more games than the year before. But for second-year Rebel head coach Rich Ryerson, it can be forgiven that wins and losses were probably second on his list. And what was at the top of the list in 2010? Saving the men’s soccer program at UNLV. And saving it is exactly what Ryerson did. With the threat of seeing the program dropped due to unprecedented budget cuts in the state, Ryerson was key in helping bring in a record donation to the team, $850,000 from the Englestad Foundation. That donation, which was fi nalized in the spring of 2011, gave the Rebels a strong base for the next fi ve years. Ryerson’s second goal was also to save his roster. Following the departure of Mario Sanchez as coach in 2010, UNLV lost a total of 13 of 22 players from the roster between a combination of graduation, transfers, and incoming recruits that chose to sign elsewhere before Ryerson was named head coach in April of 2010. But Ryerson was able to keep several key players on the team, most notably his top two scorers. That would pay off as UNLV posted six wins, including highlight victories over Stanford and Denver, an eventual NCAA at-large selection. With the solid footing the Rebels now fi nd themselves under, Ryerson has been able to add another group of impressive freshmen to last year’s class. One year after struggling to put a product together on the fi eld, Ryerson is now in place to fi eld a team capable of challenging for a top-half conference fi nish. “Overall, I was disappointed last year in our record with only six wins, but at the same time, I felt we were in every single game except perhaps for two. And there were several positives, the wins over Denver and Stanford, and we had three losses to New Mexico by one goal each, two in overtime.” Ryerson was also happy with the core group in 2010, Stephen Sifuentes, Nick Marshall, Jonny Espinoza and Mike Mota. “These four players really helped us bring the whole team together after the departures, they helped us transition into a new year that included 11 newcomers, and

Joining those fi ve are a group of three freshmen, all of whom are expected to make an impact this season. Two are Las Vegas natives (Ricky Acero and Corey Ackley), while the third player is Connor Coletti from Sandy, Utah.

GOALKEEPERS Three goalies are on the roster this season, including two returnees from 2010, senior Simon Cook and sophomore Ryan Harding, and either one could get the nod as the starter this season. Both goalies have their own different positives, as Cook brings maturity and leadership on the fi eld, while Howard is a more athletic goalkeeper. The two combined to post a 1.47 team GAA and three total shutouts. Joining that pair is freshman Aaron Stoddard from Sandy, Utah.

SCHEDULE UNLV begins the season on the road at Cal Poly on Aug. 27. That’s the fi rst of fi ve non-conference road games, while only two are at home this season - San Francisco and Green Bay in the UNLV Nike Invitational. The MPSF season will start up on Oct. 1 with a home contest against New Mexico, while this year’s league tournament will be held in Denver on Nov. 10-13. “It’s a tough schedule, especially playing so many Big West schools, that’s a conference that typically has several nationally and regionally ranked squads,” said Ryerson. “But it will challenge our team, and then we get into conference play, where our goal is the same as last year - to exceed expectations, to fi nish higher than 2010’s sixth-place record.

Las Vegas, a very technically gifted athlete with good vision on the fi eld, and is a player Ryerson expects to challenge for signifi cant playing time.

DEFENDERS This is the group Ryerson is most excited about. “This is easily the strongest backline we’ve had in the four years I’ve been involved on the coaching staff. It’s a collection of eight players that have great size and the ability to make plays in the air, and it’s really the fi rst group of players who all bring a true defensive mentality to their game.” Leading the way is Mota, a junior and one of the tallest players on the team at 6-2. “Mota is becoming a true leader for us on the fi eld, and he always gives us a scoring threat with his height for headers. He also possesses a good kick, and can strike the ball up to 60 yards.” Senior Richard Abrego is expected to see time on the line this season after playing up front his fi rst three years. “Abrego works as hard as anyone during our training, and brings that effort onto the fi eld every single game.” The Las Vegas native was fourth on the team in scoring last year with seven points (two goals, three assists). One player that redshirted in 2010 but has played his way into contention for a starting role after a strong spring and summer is freshman Kyle Mellies. “He really developed over the summer into a strong defender, and has shown the ability to close down on opponents,” said Ryerson. Sophomore Scott Brandon played in 14 games last year and is looking to challenge for the left back spot, while the other Rebel to see action in a game last year was sophomore Ryan Robertson, who was limited in 2010 by injuries.

It was a season of change for the Rebels in 2010, as they had to make a switch at the top after four-year head coach Mario Sanchez left in January and several key players either graduated or transferred out before the next coach was named. By naming the Rebels’ replacement, the school had to look no further then its own past, as former UNLV standout Rich Ryerson was named as the fi fth coach in the program’s history in April of 2010. Ryerson had spend the past three seasons as an assistant, and was ready for the challenge of taking over at the helm of his alma mater. Perhaps the biggest challenge was fi nding a starting 11 after seeing seven players transfer in the offseason before Ryerson was put in place, while the Rebels would also have to work with a new goalkeeper between the pipes. One thing working in UNLV’s favor though was the return of its top two scorers from the year before, forwards Nick Marshall and Stephen Sifuentes. And as expected, the duo were the biggest factors on the team in 2010, both offensively and in leadership as well. They turned in fi rst team all-conference seasons while leading the Rebels to the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation Tournament for the second straight year. Though the season started with a tough home loss to Valparaiso by a 1-0 score on Sept. 4, the Rebels quickly bounced back with an 8-1 rout of Alabama A&M on Sept. 6 in the second game of the UNLV Invitational, giving Ryerson his fi rst career victory. UNLV followed up that win with one of its best games of the season, as it went on the road to Pac-10 member Stanford and pulled off a 2-1

overtime upset over the Cardinal on Sept. 10, thanks to a golden goal from freshman Joaquin Rivas. The weekend ended with a loss at 18th-ranked California, but still left the Rebels with a 2-2 mark through the fi rst two weekends. N e x t u p w a s another two games away from Las Vegas, this time in the Green Bay Soccer Classic, and the Rebels would suffer a pair of tough 2-1 losses, at the hands of Green Bay and Robert Morris. Hoping to break the three-game losing streak, the squad returned home to host the UNLV Rebel Classic. The first

matchup was also the fi rst “Ryerson Cup” matchup, a contest b e t w e e n coaching brothers b e t w e e n SI

UNLV’s Ryerson and Robbie Ryerson, UNLV Hall of Famer and coach of Mount St. Mary’s. The Rebels made sure their Ryerson came out on top with a 4-1 victory on Sept. 24. Junior Ricky Abrego was impressive in the victory, posting the game-winner as well as two assists. The second game of the tournament was against No. 18 UC Irvine, and UNLV dropped the contest 4-0 on Sept. 26. Conference play for the Rebels began on Oct. 1, and for the third time in nine games they dropped a 2-1 contest, this time in overtime at New Mexico. UNLV would return home with two big performances against the other two Mountain division members, taking down Air Force 1-0 on Oct. 8 off a score from sophomore Jonny Espinoza and earning a double-overtime 0-0 tie with Denver on Oct. 10. Facing the same teams the very next weekend in Colorado, UNLV could not top the Falcons and fell 2-0 on Oct. 15, but pulled off a 1-0 upset win at Denver on Oct. 17, thanks t o s o p h o m o r e de fender Mike Mota’s fi rst career score. That win gave UNLV seven points in MPSF play, putting them i n g o o d s h a p e

towards a berth in the conference tournament before taking on the other half of the league. UNLV looked to build on the momemtum of the Denver victory with a pair of home games, but that was quickly squashed with two tough losses, 2-1 to Cal State Bakersfi eld on Oct. 22 and a 2-0 setback to Seattle on Oct. 24. As only the top six teams in the league advance to the MPSF tournament, things were not looking good for the Rebels with only three games left to play. With their backs to the wall though, the Rebels turned in their biggest weekend of the season. It began with a huge 2-1 overtime victory at San Jose State. Sifuentes scored early in the game, while Nick Marshall posted a golden goal score, the second of his career, to lift UNLV to the win on Oct. 29, earning three points. The Rebels then picked up another point two days later, as on Halloween they went to Sacramento State and pulled out a 1-1 double-overtime tie with the Hornets. Though the regular season ended with a 3-2 loss at New Mexico, UNLV had wrapped up the sixth seed in the 2010 MPSF Tournament, and would open up play against third-seed New Mexico. In a tight contest, the Lobos would come out on top, claiming a one-goal victory for UNLV for the third time in 2010. Despite the fi rst round loss, the Rebels fi nished the season with several positives from the 2010 campaign, which saw a total of four players earn All-MPSF honors. In addition to Marshall and Sifuentes on the fi rst team, Espinoza was a second team selection, and Mota was named honorable mention. Sifuentes, who fi nished the season as the team’s leading scorer with team-highs in goals (six) and points (15) also earned all-region honors as well, Third Team All-Far West by NSCAA. Marshall was next on the squad with fi ve goals and two assists for 12 points, while Espinoza also reached double-fi gures in points with 10 off four goals and two assists. In goal for the Rebels were junior Simon Cook and Ryan Harding, and the two combined to post three total shutouts (including two over Denver, a 2010 NCAA participant) and a 1.47 GAA.

Beaird directs all aspects of MPSF competition, including championships, offi ciating, rules compliance, scheduling, media relations, broadcasting, sponsorships and NCAA relations, while also shaping conference legislation, facilitating annual meetings and providing direction and communication for the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation Administrative and Executive Committees. In 2004, Beaird completed a four-year term, three years as chair, on the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championships Committee and one year as chair of the inaugural NCAA Men’s and Women’s Water Polo Rules Committee.

Beaird feels privileged to work with coaches and student-athletes who compete at the highest levels, including those who compete on USA national teams as coaches or players in international and Olympic competition. With his in NCAA Olympic sports, Beaird has been called upon to serve as liaison to the national governing bodies for amateur athletics in the United States and the United States Olympic Committee. Beaird received his undergraduate degree in physical education from UC Davis before attaining his Masters of Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento. Beaird, who lives in Woodland, California, has two daughters who have been active in high school and club sports.

men’s and women’s water polo, and men’s volleyball champions earning automatic qualifi cation into NCAA championship events. Joining the Federation for the fi rst-time in men’s swimming are the University of North Dakota and the University of Wyoming.

During the 2010-2011 season, MPSF teams again won four NCAA team championship titles, bringing the Federation’s total to 66 since the fi rst season of competition in 1992-93. Stanford led the MPSF winning three conference championships in men’s gymnastics, men’s indoor track and fi eld and women’s lacrosse and following with NCAA championships in men’s gymnastics and women’s water polo. UC Davis took Federation championships in the inaugural MPSF women’s swimming and diving championships and its second-consecutive title in women’s gymnastics. USC took the team title in men’s water polo with Sacramento State scoring its second-consecutive Federation title in men’s soccer. Oregon won both the MPSF and NCAA women’s indoor track and fi eld championships for the second straight season, while Cal State Bakersfi eld won the inaugural men’s swimming and diving championships. Two teams won their fi rst-ever MPSF championships as California won in women’s water polo and UC Santa Barbara broke through in men’s volleyball.

The Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation (MPSF) was established during the 1992-1993 season to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacifi c-10 and Western Athletic Conferences, as well as other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championships competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The founding principles on which the MPSF was originally formed were to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affi liation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fi scal pressures.

The Federation has also served as an incubator for emerging women’s sports and as a safe harbor for sports impacted by conference realignments. Since its inaugural season the Federation has seen its primary conference membership grow by the addition of the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences and their respective member institutions, as well as the addition of women’s water polo, women’s gymnastics, women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s swimming. As a testament to its viability, the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation continues to successfully navigate the ever-changing sea of college sports by fostering contraction and expansion of its sports portfolio to meet the dynamic needs of its members. As the MPSF begins its 20th season in 2011-2012 and continues its legacy of championship competition, it affi rms the vision of its founders and the relevance of its three founding principles, particularly during today’s tumultuous economic times.

In 2011-2012, the MPSF will sponsor competition in 11 intercollegiate Olympic sports, adding men’s and women’s swimming for the fi rst time, while serving approximately 1,800 student-athletes on 98 teams from 39 universities in 13 western states. All MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s soccer, men’s and women’s water polo, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s swimming, women’s lacrosse and men’s volleyball. MPSF champions are eligible to compete in NCAA Championships with MPSF men’s soccer,

Combining the excitement of an urban location with the charm of a traditional campus, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas off ers students a full educational and social experience. Just over fi ve decades old, UNLV has maintained a healthy rate of growth in enrollment, programs and scholastic excel-lence as part of the eight-component Nevada System of Higher Education. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most vibrant and dynamic cities, UNLV has matured along with the Las Vegas area. With enrollment more than doubling the last decade, the tremendous growth has meant a fl urry of construction resulting in a campus setting boasting academic and athletic facilities second to none. Steadily becoming a traditional residential university, UNLV provides on-campus housing for more than 2,000 students. A variety of student clubs and organizations along with 26 Greek organizations supplement the social development of students. From within its 15 schools and colleges, including the Wil-liam S. Boyd School of Law, UNLV is also becoming a leading research institution of the West. The school’s scientifi c, social science, and business programs attract millions of dollars in research grants annually to fund projects in desert biology, nuclear waste transportation, laser physics, public opinion surveys and many others. In addition to traditional student programs, UNLV serves diverse local, national and international communities through its Educational Outreach Division, off ering Summer Term, Continuing Education and Distance Education programs enroll-ing more than 53,000 students annually.

With its Performing Arts Center, the campus is the cultural hub of Southern Nevada. World-class orchestras and soloists, dance and theater arts combine to provide a broad selection of concerts and stage productions. The Barrick Lecture Series and several campus organizations bring noted speakers to the University, and local and visiting artists show their works in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery. UNLV has excellent athletic facilities as well, many open for student and public use. Opened in 1957 as the southern regional division of the University of Nevada with a total of 28 students, UNLV now is home to more than 28,000 students coming from every county in Nevada, all 50 U.S. states and 88 countries. Much of UNLV’s tremendous expansion is the result of support from the Nevada Legislature

and the state’s taxpayers. Private donors have played an important role as well. These gifts support new facilities and programs and, most important, provide the scholarship incentives that bring Nevada’s best and brightest student scholars to campus. UNLV operates an on-campus Center for Business and Economic Research, Center for Economic Education, Harry Reid Center for Environ-mental Studies (in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), Desert Biology Research Center, Center for Survey Research, Nuclear Waste Transportation Research Center and other research and public-service centers. Off ering 108 undergraduate programs and 137 graduate tracts, UNLV graduated a class of nearly 6,000 last year. The University operates on a semester system and is a member of the American Associa-tion of State Colleges and Universities, the Council of Graduate Schools, the American Council of Education and the Western College Association. All of the University’s academic programs are fully accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, and many programs have received further accreditation from independent national accreditation bodies.

Dr. Neal J. Smatresk was appointed President of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2009. His career at UNLV began in 2007 as executive vice president and provost, where he was responsible for the leadership and admin-istration of all academic and research programs, spanning 15 colleges and two professional schools. In the last four years, UNLV has hit a number of milestones and academic achievements despite challenging times. Smatresk emphasizes how vitally important UNLV is to improving educational access and success for diverse students, spurring the research and innovation needed for diversifi cation of Southern Nevada’s economic base, and supplying both an educated work force and critically needed services for the community and region. A testament to his vision is UNLV’s partnership with the highly re-spected Brookings Institution to establish Brookings Mountain West, the national think tank’s fi rst foray this side of the Mississippi. UNLV completed a record-breaking $537 million fundraising campaign, with Smatresk and his leadership team garnering a $12.6 million donation from the Engelstad Family Foundation to support the largest active scholarship program in the university’s history. Under Smatresk’s direction, UNLV established the Academic Success Center, which is living up to its name by helping students fi nd the right majors, succeed in their classes, and graduate on time. Student athletes are advised through the center, and they have never done better in the classroom. In addition to his teaching and leadership roles, Smatresk has championed kindergarten to doctorate science outreach eff orts and teacher professional development, participating in a number of programs throughout his career that focus on science, technology, engineering and math career development. UNLV’s president is a scientist by training and received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Smatresk joined the University of Texas, Arlington (UTA) department of biology in 1982. In his 22 years at UTA, he served as chair of biology and later dean of science, until his appointment as the chief academic offi cer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2004. During his time there, Hawaii’s fl agship university entered the ranks of the top 25 feder-ally funded institutions, gained three National Academy of Science members, and received recognition from the Chinese Ministry of Education as a Confucius Institute, an honor shared by only 11 other U.S. institutions. Smatresk has received numerous teaching awards, and his research in cardio-respiratory physiology has resulted in more than 50 papers and book chapters and grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. His undergraduate alma mater, Gettysburg College, awarded him its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2011.

LIVENGOODjim

Bringing with him a wealth of experience and the reputation as one of the nation’s top administrators, Jim Livengood was introduced as UNLV’s 11th full-time Director of Athletics on Dec. 17, 2009. Livengood wasted no time getting to work, as less than two weeks later he hired Bobby Hauck as the 10th head coach in Rebel foot-ball history. Just three months after that it was a nounced that a new, state-of-the-art basket-ball practice facility, the Mendenhall Center, would be built, with construction starting later in the year. Livengood came to UNLV following a successful tenure of more than 15 years at the University of Arizona where he oversaw an athletics program that annually competed for championships not only in the Pac-10 Confer-ence but also at a national level, maintained a high academic standard for its student-ath-letes and continually operated its $43 million budget in the black. His fi scal leadership helped Arizona remain one of the lone black-ink athletics programs among a small handful of institutions that rely exclusively on generated funds and do not re-ceive state-appropriated monies. During his time in Tucson, he served as the Paciic-10 Con-ference president, chair of the Pac-10 Athletic

Directors Revenue Sharing Committee and a member of the conference's Bowl Commit-tee and Basketball Tournament Subcommit-tee. He also was a member of the Rose Bowl Management Committee, the NCAA Fellows program, NACDA President, and chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, on which he served fi ve years. His work at Arizona and its extesion on the national level earned him an Athletic Director of the Year Award from the National Associa-tion of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2006 for Division I-A. Livengood initiated Campaign Arizona, which raised more than $130 million for ath-letic facility improvements and endowments while the Wildcats maintained a top-25 com-petitive record in the NACDA Directors' Cup (formerly Sears Cup), including high rankings of sixth in 1993-94, fourth in 1994-95, seventh in 1995-96, sixth in both 1996-97 and 1997-98 and ninth in 2001-02. That record refl ects success throughout Arizona's broad-based program, highlighted by participation in the 1994 and 2001 NCAA Men's Final Four and champions of the 1997 NCAA Men's National Basketball Tournament. Ar zona also won the 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2006 and 2007 NCAA Women's Softball Col-lege World Series titles, the 1996 and 2000 NCAA Women's Golf titleand the 2008 men's and women's NCAA Swimming Champion-ships. UA's student-athlete graduation rate contin-ued to be historically higher than that of the general student body rate during his tenure at UA. Nearly 100 student-athletes earned con-ference or regional all-academic honors, and 20 percent of UA student-athletes attained honors-level cumulative grade point averages. Livengood is a member of the NCAA Fellows Program to mentor new athletic directors, has served as a member of the NCAA Peer Review Team from 1994-99, the NCAA Gender Equity Task Force, and the Women's Commi ttee on Athletics. He has been a member of the NAC-DA Preseason Football Games Committee

since 2000 and was a member of the NACDA Strategic PlanningCommittee from 1999-2001. He served asNACDA president in 1998-1999, and in 1999 was named Division I-A Athletic Director of the Year. He is also a member of the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Associttion, having served as president of that association in 1998. Livengood spent six years as the Athletics Director at Washington State University from 1988-93 where he developed what is still widely regarded as a model gender equity program. In addition he laid the groundwork for a student-athlete wellness center that is regarded as one of the fi nest in the nation. Livengood began his administrative career in 1980 as the Associate Director for Devel-opment and Public Relations at Washington State before becoming the Athletics Director at Southern Illinois, a position he held until re-turning to Washington State. Born March 28, 1945, in Walla Walla, Wash., he received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1968 and com-pleted his fi fth-year education requirement for teaching certifi cation at Central Washing-ton University in 1972. He taught and served as an assistant football coach and track coach at Moses Lake High School in Washington in 1968-69, and as head football and basketball coach and counselor at Ephrata High School in Washington from 1972-80 before moving into athletics administration. Jim and his wife, Linda, have two grown children, Michelle, a lawyer in Memphis, and Jeremy, who resides in Phoenix. Both children are University of Arizona graduates. Michelle earned her law degree in May 2000 and Jeremy graduated in December 1999. The Livengoods are the proud grandparents of twin daughters, Emma and Isabella, born to Michelle and hus-band, Jack Murphy, in March 2009.

Class of 2010 Six diff erent Rebel sports were represented when the UNLV Athletics

Hall of Fame most recently welcomed new members on Oct. 1, 2010.

Five former Rebel standout players, one head coach and a distinguished

contributor joined two record-setting teams to form the Class of 2010

that was honored in ceremonies at the M Resort and then again at the

UNLV football game the following evening. Also being honored that night

was former Rebel football player and current CEO of the Palms, George

Maloof Jr., who received the inaugural Silver Rebel Award. Born in 1987,

UNLV’s Athletics Hall of Fame is now 105 members strong. Under the hall’s

bylaws, former student-athletes must have completed their eligibility at

least 10 years earlier to be selected. Coaches and administrators must

have stopped working at the University fi ve years previous. The hall's next

class will be announced in 2012.

JEREMY ANDERSON (1996-2000) was prolifi c performer on the golf course and in the classroom and is the only athlete in school history to be a three-time All-American and three-time academic All-American. A member of head coach Dwaine Knight’s 1998 National Championship squad, Anderson had the unusual honor of being voted player of the year in two diff erent conferences (1999 Western Athletic and 2000 Mountain West).

DANIEL BARBER (1989-92) is one of only two All-Americans in Rebel soccer history, as he was a Freshman All-American in 1989 and then a third team selection two seasons later.

JULIE CRANDALL (1995-98) is regarded as the best catcher in UNLV’s storied softball history. A multipleseason All-American, she started behind the plate for the top team in school his-tory, helping the 1995 Rebels to a tie for third place at the Women’s College World Series.

NICK GARRITANO (1991-94) was arguably the nation’s best place-kicker as a senior and he left as UNLV’s second-leading scorer in history with 240 points.

RYAN LUDWICK (1997-99) played three seasons at UNLV before becoming the fourth-highest draft pick in program history. The 1997 First Team Freshman All-American was a two-time preseason All-American before going on to an All-Star MLB career.

The 1994 UNLV FOOTBALL TEAM is one of two in school history to win a conference championship and head coach Jeff Horton’s squad went on to rout Central Michigan 52-24 in Las Vegas Bowl III.

The 1985 UNLV MEN’S SOCCER TEAM was the winningest group in program history, setting multiple school records, including most wins and fewest losses as head coach Barry Barto’s squad fi nished 18-2-2 and ranked fourth.

HEAD COACH DR. LARRY EASLEY (Posthumous) (1992-03) coached the UNLV men’s tennis team longer than anyone in history, led UNLV to three Big West Conference championships and produced four of UNLV’s fi ve all-time men’s All-Americans, including two individual national champions.

DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTOR BOB MENDENHALL is the owner and chief executive offi cer of the Las Vegas Paving Corporation. A longtime supporter of the UNLV program, Menden-hall most recently became a major part of a group that is building and donating a new multi-million dollar practice facility for the Runnin’ Rebels.
