18 Golf Guide 2011

History of Territory Golf ClubIn the fall of 2004, Tradition Golf Company along with local investors Dan Dols and Ted Klein (who own and operate Boulder Ridge and Pine Ridge), purchased The Fairways Golf Club. After purchasing, they made some great changes to the course and to the Club House before reopening in the spring of 2005 with the new name “Territory Golf Club.” What are some misconceptions about the Golf Course? The biggest misconception is that our season passes are overpriced. Our season pass pricing includes a cart – some people may not realize this. With the expansive layout of the golf course, most golfers prefer to ride versus walk and carts help speed up the pace of play, which makes for a more enjoyable expe-rience for all of our golfing patrons. What changes have happened over the last year(s) and are there any changes to look forward to in the future? The clubhouse was purchased last year by Mike and Mar Dols who run Coyote Moon Grille out of it. The golf course is now managed by brothers Dan Stang and Mike Stang who have been with the course since 2004. Dan Stang is the Golf Course Superintendent and General Manager. Mike Stang is the Director of Golf and Marketing for Territory Golf Club.

Territory Golf Club

Tip from Territory Golf Club:In all honesty, sometimes I feel the best tip has nothing to do with the golfer’s swing but more on how they’re playing the course. Play the tees that fit your golf game. Golf courses have become longer and more difficult and have gotten away from the stigma of men’s, women’s and senior’s tees. Most courses have four or more tees to choose from, so pick the one that fits your hitting distance.

Tip from Mike:Maintain a center of balance throughout swing.

Best “storm recap”: Lightning hit a water system control box and fried it - 48 hour repair.

Most commonly broken rule of golf on your course: Play ball as it lies.

Club Champion this past year:Men’s Champion- Brad Kelvington

Oldest Member: Tom Haley - 84

Most interesting member:Tom Haley - WWII Veteran seriously injured in Iwo Jima and made remarkable recovery - plays a very good game for being 84!

Signature Hole Details: #4, 501 par 5, severe dog leg right, large fairway bunkers on right and longer rough grown in to allow only very long tee shots to cut the corner. Small green guarded by pond and well bun-kered. Requires very accurate (either 2nd or 3rd) approach shot to hold the green. Tough to get near the pin and avoid trouble.

Tip from Rich Spring Golf Club:Proper grip: the vast majority of people who play golf do not use the proper grip. The proper grip will give people the best possible chance to get the most out of their abilities. People are reluctant to change their grip even when shown the proper method because the change initially feels extremely uncomfortable. The main thing that most need to look at when considering their grip is to be sure that their top hand is positioned on top of the club, gripping it with their fingers as opposed to their palm.

Most memorable golf trip you’ve ever took:Played in the Oldsmobile Scramble National Championship at Disney World in Orlando. PGA allowed me to bring family, and picked up a good chunk of the expenses.

Best “storm recap”: We had major hail damage in early July of 2010. Had to replace roof of clubhouse, and lost several trees.

Most commonly broken rule of golf on your course: Grounding club in sand trap.

Funniest thing to ever happen on the course:Chasing cattle on the course with golf carts and a lasso.

Oldest member still playing the course. L. E. Hinz 96

Tip from Judd: When stroking a putt, listen for the ball to go in the hole. Do not lift head until ball reaches hole.

Most memorable golf trip you’ve ever took:The most recent memorable trip that I have been apart of was to Wilderness and Giants Ridge. Where, on the 2nd day of golf at Giants Ridge, GreyStone Mem-ber Tom Anderson carded his 1st Hole in One.

Tip from Tim:When playing from the fescue grass at GreyStone: Stand closer to the ball at address and choose a club that has more loft and swing smooth.

Best “storm recap”: We received golf ball size hail along with a little wind damage. It took 1/2 of day for clean up.

Most commonly broken rule of golf on your course:Driving in the Fescue Grass.

These levels encourage golfers to use the handicap system:

Families are welcome, so grandparents take your grandkids here! Spend quality time golfing and afterward grab a meal from the bar & grill.

Eagle Trace’s unique features include a beauti-ful setting along with a championship course. The Mississippi River and manmade lakes border it’s event center.

Best “storm recap”: The big storm for us in 2010 was the storm in August on Friday the 13th where straight line winds and heavy rains blew over 100 trees down, creating a massive cleanup that still goes on to this day. We had a golf outing cancelled and over 120 people sought shelter in the clubhouse as they watched trees snap off like tooth picks creating an unbelievable scene. The golf course was closed for two days as a result.

Most commonly broken rule of golf .Most golfers in a casual round of golfbreak the lost ball rule by dropping a ball where they are instead of going back to the spot in which they last played from.

Blackberry Ridge has a new rewards program which is the most comprehensive program in the area with our golfers being rewarded for all of their golf, merchandise, and food and beverage purchases. The pro-gram is a great incentive for area golfers to buy from our pro shop and to stay after their round for a great sandwich and a cold beer orsoda!!
