— Hugo Medrano

from the artistic director

DEL DIRECTOR ARTÍSTICO Last season GALA celebrated 35 years of engaging audiences through classical and contemporary works by renowned artists. Our new season continues our relationship with some of these artists, while introducing new voices. We bring you the brilliant theatricality of José Sanchis Sinisterra, one of Spain’s leading contemporary playwrights, with his famous work ¡Ay, Carmela!; and the intelligent irony and subtle sensitivity of an up-and-coming Mexican-American writer, Matthew Paul Olmos, with his US Premiere of i put the fear of mexico in ‘em.

Our beloved Nilo Cruz will be back to GALA with his Spanish version of Ana en el trópico, long awaited by Washington audiences; and we conclude our dramatic feast with a Caribbean treat—the Puerto Rican musical of all time, Puerto Rico…¡fuá! by Carlos Ferrari.

These artists reflect the spectrum of Hispanic arts that are enriching our nation’s cultural scene and shaping future artistic landscapes. They are who define us as “the theatre with a different accent.” We invite you to share their language of passion. t

¡Ay, CArmelA!

Carmela and Paulino, a vaudeville comedy duo, have fallen into the hands of Franco’s fascists troops during the Spanish Civil War and are forced to put on a performance. But as heels and castanets clatter, their own intriguing story unfolds in a riot of black humor and ghostly passion. In a world still riddled with conflict, this heartbreaking portrayal of love and loss is a poignant testimony to the inhumanity of war.

Also an award winning film by Carlos Saura, ¡Ay, Carmela! is one of Spain’s greatest contemporary successes.

In Spanish with English surtitles.

As a new “lector” at a 1929 Cuban cigar factory in Ybor City, Florida, begins reading from the novel Anna Karenina, forbidden passions are unleashed amongst the workers. In this Pulitzer Prize winning play about the transformative power of literature, old traditions are pitted against changing economic realities.

BY CARLOS FERRARIDIRECTED BY HUGO MEDRANO

A hilarious and satirical take on the most notorious times in the island’s history and the development of today’s “Boricua,” this musical was an instant hit in Puerto Rico when it first opened. Ferrari, an established and frequently produced playwright in Puerto Rico spins tales of the Taíno natives, foreign invaders from the Conquistadores to the USA, and the ups and downs of contemporary life in the enchanted island.

In Spanish with English surtitles.
