At this time, Adams State College participates in the New Mexico/Colorado Reciprocal Tuition Program.

Program Stipulations:The student must be eligible for in-state tuition with the state of New Mexico.

Eligibility Requirements:1) Students must initially enroll as a full-time student and

continue enrollment as such.2) Renewal is contingent upon maintaining a cumulative

grade point average of 2.0. For transfer students, the grade point averages are based upon coursework from previous institutions as well as Adams State College.

3) The number of tuition waivers are limited and granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who meet the eligibility requirements, but do not receive a waiver because of unavailability, will be put on a waiting list.

4) Students are required to inform Adams State College of their desire to participate in the program prior to registration for each academic period.

5) Students are required to provide complete and accurate information needed to document their eligibility for the program.

6) Students must inform officials at Adams State College of any change of address or other changes that might affect their eligibility for participation in the upcoming term.

How to use this guide

Instructions for completing (Section I) scholarship applications

This publication has been produced by the Adams State CollegeOffice of Financial Aid and Scholarships to help you in yourefforts to fund your education.

Deadlines for these scholarships vary. Generally theapplication deadline for most Adams State Collegescholarships is March 1st. You must first be accepted at AdamsState College to apply for scholarships. All successful recipientsof Adams State College scholarships will be notified in writingand/or by e-mail of the scholarship they have been awarded.

Finally, to make the best use of this list, you should be aware ofthe following: A “resident of the State of Colorado” or just“resident” is defined on the basis of criteria used by the AdamsState College Registrar’s Office. Individual scholarship donorsmay determine other definitions, such as what constitutesUnited States residency.

According to Adams State College, a full-time undergraduatestudent is one who is enrolled in 12 hours or more eachsemester. All scholarships require full-time enrollment unlessotherwise stated. Again, individual donors may alter this

definition. GPA is Grade Point Average, which is presentlybased on a 4.0 scale at Adams State College.

Demonstrated financial need will be determined from theFAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). All studentsare encouraged to complete and submit the FAFSA to ensureevery possible type of student aid will be considered in yourfinancial aid award package.

Write in name of scholarship. One application must be filledout for each scholarship you are applying for.

1) Fill out application.

2) Include all necessary documentation required with eachapplication. Some applications require additional

information such as a transcript. Incomplete applicationswill not be considererd.

3) Turn in applications by March 1st (unless otherwise stated)to the Adams State College One Stop Student ServicesCenter.

If you are interested in identifying additional scholarshipresources not listed in this publication, begin at your locallibrary. Most public and school libraries have scholarshippublications in their reference sections. Scholarships can belocated according to major, ethnic background, career field, etc.Simply contact your local library for more information. Followthese guidelines to research private sources of funds.

1. Plan Ahead. Locating scholarship resources takes carefulpreparation. Start planning for your freshman year in college asearly as your sophomore year in high school; for graduateschool, begin during your junior year of college.

2. Investigate All Sources. Contact business and industryorganizations that provide services or products in yourmajor/field of study. Inquire about employee or dependentscholarship programs offered from your parent or spouse’semployer. Again, visit your public library. Also contact yourlocal chamber of commerce, political leaders, and fraternalorganizations, i.e. Elks, Mason, Eagles, etc.

3. Follow up. When you receive application forms from thedonor, carefully complete them. Follow all directions andobserve ALL DEADLINES. Be concerned with the quality ofyour application. Pay close attention to neatness, spelling,grammar, and content.

senior who is resident of the San Luis Valley.Must major in English/Creative Writing, ArtMusic or Theatre. Additional requirements —Must provide a letter addressingeducational/career goals in the creative arts andwhy you deserve the scholarship and provide aletter of recommendation from a teacher orprofessor.

Judith Richardson Visual Art ScholarshipAmount: Up to $1,000Criteria: Please see Adams State Art Department for

criteria and application.

Cloyde Snook ScholarshipAmount: Full-time, in-state graduate tuitionCriteria: Must be full time. Must be unconditionally

accepted into the Master's of Art in Art program.Must submit a paragraph summarizing thereason(s) you need or want scholarship assistanceand two letters of recommendation from a collegeart instructor or other individual familiar with

your ability in art. Must submit a portfolioconsisting of six pieces of artwork representing aminimum of two media, submitted in portfolioor appropriate container. Matted, mounted orframed as appropriate. Slides are acceptable butactual artwork is preferred.

Lorraine Young Memorial ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must be a Colorado resident and US citizen who

is majoring in Mathematics, English, Art orScience. Must not participate in College approvedand sanctioned intercollegiate athletics asgoverned by the NCAA, NAIA or otherintercollegiate athletic sanctioning body to whichAdams State College may belong.

Amount: $500Criteria: Must be an Alamosa high school senior, have

Amount: $1,500Criteria: Scholarship recipients must have and maintain a

2.0 or better cumulative GPA. Must be amember of the ASC Football team that showsfinancial need. Additional requirement - Mustsubmit a personal letter of application addressing:educational and career goals, community/schoolinvolvement and why applicant deserves thescholarship.

SLV Cattleman's Association/Grizzly Club Scholarship

Amount: VariableCriteria: Must be a resident of the SLV, member of an

Adams State athletic team, enroll as a full-timestudent, and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 orbetter. Additional requirement — must submita letter addressing educational/career goals andcommunity service and with consideration totime demands and constraints. Recipients ofthis scholarship will be expected to promotethe SLV Cattleman's Association and/orGrizzly Club. Activities could includeparticipation in the Annual Beef Bowl FootballGame, Homecoming parade, etc.

Loren & Alice Shipp ScholarshipAmount: Up to $2,000Criteria: Must be a member of an athletic team with a 2.5

or better GPA.

Bill Zittle Memorial Golf ScholarshipAmount: Up to $1,000Criteria: Must be an Adams State men’s golf team

participant with a 2.5 or better GPA. Application: Apply with Golf coach.

Business Major

The Ellis Memorial Scholarship Amount: VariableCriteria: Recipients must be majoring in Management

Information Systems or Accounting with a GPAof 3.0 or better. Preference will be given to out-of-state residents.

FirstBank ScholarshipAmount: $600 or variableCriteria: Must be a business major with a 3.0 or better

GPA. Must be active in School of Business clubsor organizations. Additional requirement —must provide two letters of recommendationfrom business and/or education faculty.

Michael John Gay Memorial ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must be from a rural community in Colorado.

Must be classified as a junior or senior during theaward year. Must have declared a major in theSchool of Business. Additional requirement —

William and Lenora Gilmore Memorial (Business) Scholarship

Amount: VariableCriteria: Recipient must major in Business.

Clyde Helms Memorial ScholarshipAmount: Resident tuition and college service feesCriteria: Must be a graduate of a SLV high school with a

3.0 or better GPA and an ACT score of 19 orbetter. Must major in business (financeemphasis).

Kay Prendergast Kelloff ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must be a full-time junior or senior with a 3.0 or

better GPA. First preference given to elementaryeducation major and second preference given tobusiness administration major. Additionalrequirement — must provide two letters ofreference (one from an Adams State facultymember) and submit a letter addressingeducational/career goals and communityservice.

L & M Auto ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must be registered full-time, majoring in Business

– undergraduate or graduate level — with acumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Preference willbe given to residents of the San Luis Valley.Additional requirement — Must submit aletter addressing educational and professionalgoals.

Mingilton Family EndowmentAmount: VariableCriteria: Must be a single parent with a 2.75 or better

GPA. Must be an education or businessadministration major. Additional requirement— must submit one letter of recommendation.

National Western ScholarshipAmount: $2,500 (renewable)Criteria: Must have participated in the National Western

during the annual January show (showing, judging,volunteer program, Westernaires, sanctioned 4-H/FFA project, or entering and competing in anevent for which preparation and training arerequired). This does not include participation inshows held at the National Western at times otherthan the actual January Stock Show dates for each

specific year. Must have a 3.0 or better cumulativeGPA. Must be registered full-time at Adams StateCollege. Must be seeking a degree in Agribusiness.

Ove Nielsen Memorial ScholarshipAmount: Resident tuition and college service feesCriteria: Must be a graduate of a SLV high school with a

2.75 or better GPA with a 21 or better ACT.Must be a business major. Additionalrequirement — must submit a letter ofrecommendation and a letter addressingeducational/career goals.

Robert Hoag Rawlings Foundation ScholarshipAmount: $1,500Criteria: Must be a journalism or business major. Must

have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better. Must befrom the 18-county southeastern Colorado areacovered by the Pueblo Chieftain newspaper:Pueblo, Mineral, Chaffee, Saguache, Rio Grande,Conejos, Fremont, Custer, Alamosa, Costilla,Huerfano, Las Animas, Crowley, Otero, Kiowa,Bent, Prowers and Baca. Additional requirement— must submit an unofficial transcript and aletter addressing educational/career goals andcommunity service.

Rustic Log Furniture ScholarshipAmount: $1,500Criteria: Must have a 2.75 or better cumulative GPA.

Preference will be given to students majoring inBusiness. Preference will be given to studentsemployed by Rustic Log Furniture. If noemployees apply or meet the criteria, thescholarship will be awarded to another studentwho meets one or more of the stated criteria.

Sunwest Oil Co., Inc. ScholarshipAmount: $500Criteria: Must be a graduate of a SLV high school and an

incoming freshman with a 2.75 or better GPA.Must be a business major.

Wall, Smith & Bateman ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must be a junior or senior majoring in

accounting. Must have a 2.5 GPA, with a 3.0 inmajor classes.

Robert & Karen Willis-Jack's Market (Del Norte, CO) Scholarship

Amount: $1,000Criteria: Must have a cumulative college GPA of 2.8 or

better and major in business or education. Mustbe a sophomore during the award year. Preferencewill be given to graduates from these San LuisValley high schools: Del Norte, Creede, Center.

Robert Ellard Wright Memorial ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must major in Science, Business or be enrolled in

the MBA program. Must have a cumulative GPAof 3.4 and above. Additional requirements —Must submit a transcript, letter of applicationaddressing educational/career goals and oneletter of reference.

Counseling Major

Borrego Family ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Applicants must be graduate students who have

taught school for at least one year. Preference willbe given to a female, minority student who is anASC graduate.

Marvin Motz ScholarshipAmount: Full-time, in-state graduate tuitionCriteria: Must be unconditionally accepted into the on-

campus Master's of Art in Counseling program.Must submit a letter expressing a desire to beconsidered and why. Scholarship will be awardedto student during their second year of the program.

Education Major

Ruth Curtis Gilbert ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must have a 3.0 or better GPA. Preference will be

given to an education major. Additionalrequirement — must submit a letter addressingeducational/career goals and communityservice.

Kay Prendergast Kelloff ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must be a full-time junior or senior with a 3.0 or

(approximately $400) for one yearCriteria: Must be a single female with a 3.0 or better GPA.

Must be an education major (undergraduate orgraduate). Preference will be given to a student ofthe Christian faith. Additional requirement —please provide an unofficial transcript, a letterof recommendation, and complete thestatement “Why I deserve this scholarship”.

The Dr. Paul S and Patti K Newman Theatre Education Scholarship Endowment

Amount: $1,000Criteria: Must be majoring in theatre and be a secondary

English licensure candidate. Recipient must befinishing his/her junior year and havedemonstrated a passion for teaching, theatre, andEnglish. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 orbetter. Additional requirements — Submit anessay of no more that 800 words describinghis/her passion for teaching, theatre, andEnglish.

Dr. Philip Rowley GrantAmount: VariableCriteria: Teacher education majors should meet at least

one of the following: first in immediate family togo to college, permanent resident of a ruralcommunity (population less than 12,000), asingle parent or dependent student who does notqualify for college grants or work-study due toparent's income.

Application: Apply with Adams State teacher educationdepartment (grant awarded during studentteaching semester).

Ralph Vail & Kathlyn Thatcher Vail ScholarshipAmount: $500Criteria: Must be a teacher education major with a 2.75 or

better cumulative GPA. Preference will be givento a graduate of Pueblo County High School,followed by a resident of Pueblo County, CO.Recipient must be student teaching during thesemester in which the scholarship is received.Additional requirement — must submit aletter addressing educational/career goals andcommunity service.

Amount: $1,000Criteria: Must have a cumulative college GPA of 2.8 or

Stanley & Ruth Wills ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must be admitted through the Graduate School

and pursuing a Master of Arts in Education.Must enroll full time and have a cumulative GPAof 3.0 or better. Preference will be given to thosewith financial need. Additional requirements —Must submit a letter addressing goals andleadership skills.

English Major

Orahood Burt ScholarshipAmount: VariableCriteria: Must be a Colorado resident and in the upper 10

percent of high school graduating class. Must bean English major.

The Green/Park Woolbert Creative ArtsScholarship

Amount: VariableCriteria: Scholarship recipients must be an ASC junior or

senior who is resident of the San Luis Valley.Must major in English/Creative Writing, ArtMusic or Theatre. Additional requirements —Must provide a letter addressing educational/career goals in the creative arts and why youdeserve the scholarship and provide a letter ofrecommendation from a teacher or professor.

The Brooks Haynie Memorial ScholarshipEndowment

Amount: VariableCriteria: Recipients must be an incoming freshman or

transfer student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 inhigh-school or community college. Must majorin English/Mass Communications. Preferencewill be given to students who show substantialfinancial need and/or will be the first in theirfamily to attend college. Additional requirement– must submit a one-page cover letter explainingwhy the applicant wishes to pursue a career injournalism as well as an unofficial high school orjunior college transcript, and three letters ofrecommendation that speak to the applicant’swork ethic and writing skills. Two of these letters

should be from teachers and one from a memberof the applicant’s local community.

Dr. Paul S and Patti K Newman Theatre Education Scholarship Endowment

Amount: $1,000Criteria: Must be majoring in theatre and be a secondary

English licensure candidate. Recipient must befinishing his/her junior year and havedemonstrated a passion for teaching, theatre, andEnglish. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 orbetter. Additional requirements - Submit anessay of no more that 800 words describinghis/her passion for teaching, theatre, andEnglish.

Marian Sims Baughn Memorial ScholarshipAmount: $1,500Criteria: Must be an incoming freshman female, must have

The McDaniel Group Scholarships are provided through thegenerosity of the donors listed below and/or their family andfriends, the Adams State Foundation and contributions by Dr.John McDaniel.

Please look carefully at the criteria for the scholarship.Unqualified applications will not be reviewed. After initialapplication review, the scholarship selection committee reservesthe right to conduct personal interviews with qualifyingcandidates.

You will be notified by the Scholarship Committee if you arecalled for an interview.

Information for all McDaniel Group Scholarships:

1. Students who show financial need or who show an interest inpursuing graduate studies may be given special considerationby the scholarship selection committee.

2. Students may reapply for the scholarship, although renewalwill not be automatic. The scholarship selection committeereserves the right to establish application deadlines and criteriafor selection.
