HONORABLE CHARLES H. ODOM A native of Tampa, FL, Bro. Charles H. Odom was edu-

cated in the public schools of Hillsborough County. He was

a graduate of Middle­ton Senior High School, Class of

1937. He furthered his education at Florida Memorial Col-

lege; Morgan State University, Baltimore, MD and Temple

University, Philadelphia, PA. He served honorably in the

United States Army from 1942-1946. After his discharge

from the Army, Bro. Odom relocated to Philadelphia, PA.

He was employed by the Philadelphia, PA Schools System

as a Student Counselor, retir­ing in 1979. After his retire-

ment, Bro. Odom moved to Phoenix, AZ, where he resided

until 1997, at which time he returned to Tampa, FL. He is a

LIFE MEMBER of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., he is

also a member of the Distinguished Service Chapter, on of

the highest honors given to a brother of Phi Beta Sigma. He

is member of the Alumni chapter of Middleton High School,

Florida Memorial and Morgan State University.

DR. SAM HORTON Sam Horton was a direct descendent of a founding

family of Beallsville, founded by a dozen freed slave

families after the Civil War. He devoted free time to

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Beulah Baptist Church and Guardsmen. Horton had been a longtime educator

in the Hills­borough County School District and was past president of the local chapter of the National

Association for the Advancement of Colored People. School district officials honored his contributions

by naming the stadium after him at Jefferson High School. Horton graduated from what was then Florida

A&M College and later got a doctorate from Nova Southeastern. Horton returned to teach in Hillsbor-

ough County. He was principal of Marshall as it became one of the first to integrate. He later became

principal of Jefferson High School and was the first black general director of secondary education. He

spent much of his later years opposing educa­tion policies he thought would lead to more segregated

schools. “I have a principle to stand on,” Horton said in a 2006 Tampa Tribune article. “I’m an integra-

tionist.” U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor of Tampa recognized Horton in Congress this February during Black

History Month. “Dr.. Horton was truly a legend in our community,” she said in a statement today. “It is a

sad day, but Sam led a wonderful life of leadership. He will be remembered as one of Tampa’s – and one

Keynote Speaker John Loblack, Ed. D

John Loblack, Ed. D, is on a mission to posi-

tively impact the lives of each individual his life

touches. His goal is to help others change the

direction of their lives through education. Origi-

nally, from the tiny Caribbean island of Domin-

ica, Dr. Loblack emigrated to the United States

primarily to enhance his education. Over the

years, he has used the lessons from his diverse

education experiences to help others overcome

the every day challenges of life.

Dr. Loblack is the last of three children. He was raised by a single mother. Be-

cause his mother only had a fifth grade education she inspired her children to

value education. Today, his sister is a nurse practitioner and his brother is an

attorney. In his formative years, school was his least favorite place to be; conse-

quently, he was described as a juvenile delinquent and was constantly told that

he would not amount to anything in life.

Since moving to the United States; however, he has become a passionate edu-

cator; one who is determined to inspire the youth, especially in the African

American community to place a high premium on education. As a Teen Life-

style Mentor, he intends to go the extra-mile to help his clients secure and en-

joy the highest possible level of education en-route to leading meaningful and

successful lives. He works with people/youth on goal setting, time manage-

ment, communication skills, writing, reading, career planning, study skills and

Life skills.

To-date, he has written two books, Go Get the Job and Green Gold; Success

Tips from the Islands and is the co-author on one book, A Young Man’s Guide

for Personal Success. He resides in Wesley Chapel, FL, with his spouse,

Marilyn, a middle school math teacher. He is the proud father of a daughter,

Angelica, and two sons, Alister and Yanick.

Welcome to the Sixth Annual Scholarship and Community Awards Banquet

hosted by the Crescent Foundation, Inc. in conjunction with the Tampa Alumni

Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. I would like to thank you for your support

and commitment in making a difference in the Tampa Bay area communities.

Each year the Crescent Foundation, Inc.(TCF) and Tampa Alumni Chapter of

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. continue to advance its mission of promoting pro-

grams and activities that target males 13-18, provide educational and social activi-

ties. The Crescent Foundation was founded around the philosophy of being “a part

of” rather than “apart from” the general community. TCF’s members believe that

young men should be judged by their own merits, without regard to race, nationality,

religion, age, socio-economic status, or health status. This should not be based on

their family background or level of affluence. TCF vision is geared toward providing

educational programs that will dramatically increase the ability of young minority

males in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties to make healthy physical, emotional, and

social decisions.

The goal of the Crescent Foundation, Inc. is to

continue to make a difference in the young male’s lives.

Social Action Honoree

Sean Dickerson

Sean Dickerson is a graduate of Quinnipiac University in Hamden,

CT with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. He is originally from

Connecticut and moved to Tampa in 2006. Sean gained his first so-

cial action experience through a mentoring program while in col-

lege. As a Sr. Counselor for L.E.A.P. (Leadership, Education, and

Athletics in Partnership), a year round inner-city youth organization

dedicated to motivating children to excel both academically and

socially, Sean learned an important lesson - the feeling of giving is

significantly more rewarding than receiving. After completing col-

lege and graduating from the Sr. Counselor role with L.E.A.P., Sean served as a one-on-one mentor for

the Middletown, CT YWCA for under privileged children until he moved to Florida.

After spending a year in Pembroke Pines, FL, Sean and his family moved to the Tampa area. Upon

arriving in Tampa, he immediately searched for an opportunity to serve his new community. He found

that opportunity and fellowship within 100 Black Men of Tampa Bay, Inc. (100 BMTB). He joined

the organization in August 2006 and got to work by immersing himself in the mentoring program es-

tablished with two elementary schools, Oak Park Academy and Booker T. Washington. The ability to

GIVE in this capacity was rewarding but he wanted to do more in order to reach more youth. In Feb-

ruary 2007, Sean was nominated for and accepted the role of VP of Programs for 100 BMTB. Sean

articulated this opportunity as both an exciting and scary time for him. Although there were many

challenges, including learning new geographical areas (charter covers 9 counties), the history of those

areas, the opportunities of the area, and the role an organization like 100 BMTB could play, the excite-

ment for being able to have long term impact in the lives of young people and adults overshadowed

any feelings of anxiety. As VP of Programs, Sean oversaw the growth of the mentoring program to

include an additional elementary school (Potter), the development of a Collegiate 100 initiative with

Hillsborough Community College, expansion of economic empowerment programming, and health &

wellness programs. Sean continued serving in the capacity of VP of Programs until April 2010 when

he accepted the role of President for 100 BMTB. And his commitment to the work has not just contin-

ued but has passionately grown as more and more youth and adults need that helping and caring hand.

As the motto of the organization goes, "What They See Is What They'll Be". Sean hopes that others

will see the best within themselves and look to help someone else along in life's journey.

Professionally, Sean has worked in the Human Resources field for over 15 years and currently works

with the Center for Equal Health as a Research Coordinator. He is also continuing his education at the

University of South Florida, pursuing a Master's degree in Adult Education with a concentration in

Human Resources Development. Sean is a proud father of two girls and recently celebrated 14 years

of marriage to his lovely wife Moni.

President, Athletes for Charity

Cathleen Laporte is the founder and president of Athletes for Charity

(www.athletesforcharity.com), a New York based organization that serves as

a charitable initiative dedicated towards encouraging the giving of time, financial resources, and the

sharing of information to improve the collective lives of disadvantaged youth, advance the common

good and support the nonprofit sectors that benefit foster care youth. She has been hailed a

“Children’s Champion” for her continued efforts to benefit the lives of foster care youth, a cause she

is very passionate about. In 2007, Cathleen was invited to ring the closing bell at NASDAQ in rec-

ognition of her work in the community and has been the recipient of a number of accolades and

awards for her commitment to community service.

Cathleen philanthropic works in Tampa, FL has been extensive, ranging from the manage-

ment of the Ryan Sims Foundation and its support of foster care youth initiatives with The Children’s

Village and Carlton Manor, its fight against cancer through donations to the American Cancer Soci-

ety, and its support of the development of youth through collaborations with the Crescent Foundation

and the Sigma Beta Club. Cathleen also works with James Lee of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and

will oversee his charitable interests in Tampa and his home town of Belle Glade, Fl.

Cathleen is a graduate of State University of New York at Binghamton, University of Pitts-

burgh School of Law, and the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International

Affairs. She is also the founder of Athletes for Haiti which aims to support educational and sports

development initiatives in Haiti and a distinguished member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Education Honoree

William Betts William Betts was born and raised in Ft. Pierce, FL. He graduated in 1993 from Lincoln Park Acad-

emy. In the fall of 1993, he began Indian River Community College and eventually transferred to USF

in 1997. He joined the Zeta Xi chapter of Phi Beta Sigma during the fall of 1997. In Dec. 1998, he

graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education. William began his teaching career in 1999 at Lewis

Elementary. In 2004, he graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a Masters degree in Vary-

ing Exceptionalities, and in 2006, received an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leader-

ship. Over the course of his teaching career, he has worked as a 2nd grade teacher, ESE teacher, Lead

teacher, and Behavior Specialist. William future goal is to one day work in the College of Education

on the collegiate level for a major university.

Interim Chief Executive Officer Corporation to Develop Communities (CDC) of

Tampa, Inc.

Ernest Coney Jr. serves as the CDC of Tampa’s Interim Chief Executive Officer. He brings over 15 years of management-level experience in providing health and social programs to benefit low to moderate income persons and the elderly. With an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and a Master degree from the University of South Florida, he has developed strong business acumen in the areas of management, finance, and perform-ance improvement. Prior to being hired by the CDC, Mr. Coney held positions such as Sr. Actuarial Analyst , Director of Operations, and Finance Administrator for several national healthcare compa-nies. His previous experience in developing pricing models, and performance improve-ment initiatives assisted in the successful turnaround of WellCare HMO of Florida, into the State’s largest Medicaid health plan. During his tenure as Interim CEO and COO of the CDC of Tampa, Inc. Mr. Coney led the CDC of Tampa, Inc. in leveraging over $19 million dollars in joint venture projects, to include real estate and program service projects. Mr. Coney was reared in Tampa, Florida, and educated in Hillsborough County public schools. He went on to marry his high school sweetheart, Anika. The couple has one child, Shelby. Mr. Coney attends Spirit of Truth Ministries, where he is a Minister.

Well while attending Spoto High School I joined

the marching band I played the drums, and trom-

bone. I was in FBLA, and chess club. Also played on

the varsity basketball team 3 years, played football,

ran cross country, did track and field was an expert

at high jump, and managed the volleyball team. I

was also a mentor to a young man by the name of

KJ we were both in the college reach out program.

His AP approached me to work with him so I did.

Then my senior year came and I won a laptop for

being one of seven outstanding seniors at Spoto

H i g h S c h o o l .

The thing I loved about the sigma beta club

was that we are like brothers and we stuck to-

gether. I also liked when we traveled or did volun-

teering, also the bigger brothers that kept us laughing. Mr. Hank who

gave me a job opportunity, Mr. Phil who seen my leadership, Mr. James

who always called me to see if I wanted to go to a sports event. And to

all of the other big brother mentors who talked to me and asked me

about life and what I wanted to do after high school. In the sigma beta

club I met many known athletes and their assistants, It was just a great

experience.

When I arrive at Buena Vista University I plan on majoring in sports medi-

cine, and I'm undecided in my minor. I plan on to walk

on to the basketball team and plan to run track. I

would also like to get a chapter of Phi Beta Sigma

started there since they do not have any fraternities

what so ever. I would like to make history at that

school. I will be in the ROTC program because I plan

on enrolling in the army or air force after I graduate.

Sigma Beta: Travis Ingraham

I was born in 1993 into a military family. Because my dad was in

the Army, I have had the privilege of living in many different

places around the world. I feel one of my strengths is that I am

easily accepting and tolerant of others around me, and of

other cultures and customs. This may be because I am an

“army brat’ and have lived in many places around the world

and experienced many different types of people early on in

my life. With these experiences I have learned to share and

bring a new perspective to my peers. I feel that I am an intelli-

gent individual, one who will be able to achieve all of my

goals with ease, while helping others along the way. This, cou-

pled with my creativity, is a recipe for success, which will allow me to contribute to my

surrounding community in new and refreshing ways, and constantly set higher standards.

When my family finally moved, and stayed, in Tampa, Florida I began to stay active in my

community and school. I became a part of a wide range of extracurricular activities in-

cluding the Boy Scouts of America. Many of the characteristics I now posses can be

found in the Boy Scout Law, that states, one must always be: trustworthy, loyal, helpful,

friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. These all

are traits I feel I act on in my daily life and from these I apply to the many different lead-

ership roles I have, in all aspects of my life. However if there are any leadership positions I

have learned the most from, they would be those from the BSA. Over the years I rose

through the ranks, and now I am an Eagle Scout, and with my leadership I guided my

Boy Scout troop to help me with my Eagle Scout community service project. We water-

proofed and stained a 100 foot walkway leading up to an outdoor amphitheater and

also built a podium to house a computer and projector system for night time presenta-

tions. Not only have I involved with the Boy Scouts for 8 years, I stay active in, the Sigma

Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, the National Technical Honor Society,

Newsome High School Honor Court and JROTC. I have volunteered for nearly 200 hours

of community service in order to “give back” to my community in hopes of causing a

positive impact.

While I have always been involved with activities that benefit my community, I haven’t

had as much time as I would like for sports. As a little kid I won multiple 1st place trophies

from different chess tournaments. Eventually I won awards in, karate and I played base-

ball for my area in elementary school even though I wasn’t very good. I then focused

more on playing the piano, which I had been doing since I started elementary school. I

learned to play well and went to multiple recitals, but at the time, piano always seemed

boring. Somehow in the 7th I picked up acting, and within 2 years, I was given the oppor-

tunity for the Diamond Agency to represent me. At first, I was given a few auditions for

major companies, and won awards by going to the International Presentation of Per-

formers, or IPOP, until I was automatically chosen to act in the Film, The Tenant. Even

though I started halfway through High School, I picked up basketball as my favorite sport

and began to play almost every day. Somehow, I never made my school’s team but, I

advanced to the all-star playoff game in my district for the YMCA, and now I play for the 3C’s

AAU team.

In my JROTC program I joined the Raider Challenge Team where we won 2nd place in the dis-

trict competition. Raider team is an army style competition of teams who can show the best

physical strength and endurance in 5 mile runs, push up and curl up

competitions and rope bridge competitions. have also been a

member of the Army JROTC program at Newsome High school for

four years and I am currently a master sergeant and the S3 assistant.

Recently, I also became the Vice President of the Mid Florida chap-

ter of the Primitive Baptist Church School Convention. I help coordi-

nate the Youth portion of the convention with the president and or-

ganize other aspects of the adult portion.

After High school I would like to go to USF and earn a major in

mechanical engineering. To pay for college I hope to be the recipi-

ent of an Air Force ROTC scholarship, and then upon graduating

from USF, be commissioned in to the Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant,

and then serve for 8 years minimum. After my college education

and military service I would like to either become a military contrac-

tor, or an engineer/ inventor that will help solve the many problems we face in modern soci-

ety like global warming, oil dependency or world hunger. To me this would be the most fulfill-

ing job possible; I can integrate my love of drawing and designing with my passion to help

Good evening, my name is Carl-Henry Paul. I was born

Feb, 26 1992 and I'm a senior at Alonso High School. I have a

little sister and an inspiring mother; I play varsity football and

also track and field at Alonso. I enjoy writing music and also

creating my own sound. I'm the 2010-2011 President of the

Sigma Beta Club and The Great Debate Champion for 2011. I

have two strong college choices and they are TCC and BCU.
