Feature Story

The Mechanics of “+EN”

Exploring the technology behind our ultra high-speed network

Wharf T&T has launched “+EN”, a fixed network infrastructure investment project worth HK$1 billion over the next three

years to provide Fibre-to-the-Desk (FTTD) ultra high-speed broadband service and various IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) for

business customers. In the coming issues, we would like to walk you through the essence behind the +EN project, and

the first topic we would like to explore is “FTTD and GPON”.

FTTD and GPON

The shift in demand for high-bandwidth data services such

as video-on-demand, HD video-conferencing, and real-time

business applications has revolutionised the nature of the

network infrastructure and has driven the need for the

deployment of Ethernet-based infrastructure.

One of the technologies used behind +EN is Gigabit

Passive Optical Networks (GPON), a proven technology

with standards finalised in 2005. It is an advanced fibre-

optic technology for building point-to-multipoint

networks between network operator and user sites

supporting Fibre-to-the-Desk (FTTD) ultra high-speed

broadband. It comprises an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) at

the service provider’s central office and a number of Optical

Network Units (ONU) near end users, connected by fibre cables

and components that transmit signals without using electricity.

Since no power is required during the transmission process, it is

described as “passive”.

It supports a mix of voice, video and data services with the potential to be upgraded

to ‘10G’ per connection which means high-bandwidth applications will no longer be a burden to the broadband

network, and it has great flexibility, allowing room for new service deployment.

Unlike copper-based technologies, FTTD broadband does not suffer from decreasing performance over distance. What

is more, optical fibre can reach the user’s desk instead of the central office of the office building so transmission speed,

throughput, and the security level are all improved.

The FTTD technology can help lower costs for service providers, which in turn benefits customers by keeping the

subscription price competitive. The +EN network allows Wharf T&T to offer cloud-based ITaaS solutions at lower total

cost of ownership.

Stay tuned for more interesting information about the “+EN” project!

Benefits of FTTD: • Very compact to fit into small conduits and building floor access points

• Extremely flexible small diameter cables in combination with miniaturised cable accessories

• Reduced the need for on-site pre-audits

• A reduced amount of connectivity points (splices, connectors) shortens the installation time

• The time spent inside the customer’s premises is minimised

Email Marketing Helps Escape Spa Rise to a New Level of Promotion

Industry: Retail (Spa)

Service Provided: Email Marketing Service - WeB-eM

Challenges: Looking for a cost-effective and impactful e-marketing tool to increase memberships

Solution: Riding on the one-stop WeB-Demand Generation Platform, Escape Spa makes use of

e-Coupon, Joint Promotion and WeB-Reach service to maximise its reach to target

customer groups

“… to a new level of perfection” - Escape Spa’s slogan clearly explains its mission of

providing a relaxing environment minutes away from the buzzing life in Hong Kong city

so that customers can pamper themselves for an afternoon or evening enjoying one of

the best series of Beauty and Skin treatments and massage therapies available.

Customer Highlight

Features that facilitate Escape Spa’s email marketing campaign:• Customer database creation and maintenance

• Email content design with built-in templates

• Tracking customers’ responses to trigger follow-up actions

• Real time programmes results retrieval

• Partnership programmes and service bundling for creative

joint promotions

What makes Escape Spa rise “to a new level of promotion”?

Although launched more than ten years ago and possessing a

substantial customer base, Escape Spa faces fierce competition.

With opening of a new branch in Causeway Bay, a more effective

strategy to enlarge the membership base is priority. Ricky Fung,

Escape Spa’s Sales and Marketing Director, said, “Beating off stiff

competition and meeting various customer needs have driven

us to explore more marketing channels, such as e-marketing

as email marketing would be the most cost-effective way of

reaching our younger target audience.”

According to the List of 10 trends for spas in 2010 published

by the International Spa Association, more spas are embracing

social media and shifting their focus to appeal to the Millennial

Generation (aged 18-29). They see the younger generation are

more dedicated to preventive health and more comfortable

and familiar with spa offerings than older generations or their

parents. This group is also more at ease with technology, which

explains why email, social media, and cell phone applications

made the list.

In 2009 Escape Spa started using “WeB-eM” - Wharf T&T

eBusiness’s flagship email marketing service. Since then,

WeB-eM and its related service portfolio have been their

primary online email marketing tool to communicate its latest

offers and promotions to their customers.

WeB-Demand Generation platform is WeB’s extended service

portfolio for its customers to launch outbound and inbound

e-Marketing campaigns such as ‘Joint Promotion’, ‘eCoupon’,

and the recently launched ‘WeB-Reach’ service. Customers can

use the platform and partner with other members of the WeB

community to design and launch new promotional campaigns

so that they can extend their reach to more new prospects.

Since their launch, these email marketing tools and promotion

programmes have aroused a great deal of attention among

existing customers, and Escape Spa was one of them.

“I believe it is a brilliant idea as we can explore new marketing

opportunities and form a lot of creative partnerships within the

WeB community through programmes such as ‘Joint Promotion’

and ‘eCoupon’. We are glad that WeB staff have provided

excellent advice and implementation support for our online

marketing strategies,” added Ricky.

“Customers’ feedback and requirements help guide the design

of WeB-Demand Generation service. The platform provides

useful marketing resources that can help SMEs launch a

promotional campaign quickly and easily. More importantly,

the business opportunities the customer is exposed to are

phenomenal,” explained Kenneth Tsang, Assistant Marketing

Director of WeB.

Over the past few months, Escape Spa has launched several

campaigns for different target customers through WeB-

Demand Generation platform’s monthly ‘Joint Promotion’ and

‘eCoupon’ programme.

“While we are still exploring customers’ online shopping

behaviour through various online promotional messages,

we appreciate all the opportunities and exposure that WeB-

Demand Generation platform provides, it really helps! Escape

Spa will launch a brand new series of laser skincare treatment

service, Collagen+ this coming September. We will continue to

work closely with WeB in order to expand our business,” added

Ricky delightedly.

COL Brings Enterprise-Proven, Customised, and Budget-Friendly Cloud-Based Backup Solution to Protect Your Business Data Data protection is a critical information management process, particularly for businesses in highly regulated or litigious industries

such as financial services companies. They need to comply with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Supervisory Policy Manual on

Business Continuity Planning and have to maintain data for 7 years as per industry requirement. It has been traditional practice for

these companies to backup to tapes. However, tape management is costly and inefficient as in the event of a disaster, it takes a long

time to restore the data from piles of old tapes. Realising the inadequacy of this legacy data protection solution and an urgency to

modernise their backup solution in the ever-expanding data environment, cloud backup has emerged as an alternative to tape due

to the growth of affordable bandwidth and capacity optimisation technologies.

A cloud-based customised data backup solution allows customers to backup data to the secondary site via a high-throughput

dataline. COL’s enterprise-grade Customised Cloud-based Backup Solution is a fully managed, cloud-based server backup solution

that rides on EMC’s Avamar de-duplication technology to significantly reduce data backup time, traffic loading, and storage size by

eliminating redundant data at source. Encrypted data can be securely sent to COL’s accredited Data Centre for automatic backup and

recovery through Wharf T&T’s private Metro Ethernet without manual IT intervention.

This IP-based solution portal allows users to define the backup and retention schedule, then performs the backup schedule

automatically and continuously due to its proactive administration and monitoring, it keeps users abreast of issues that need

attention as well as freeing them from maintenance and patching and the other daily tasks of server and application management.

With guaranteed Service Level Agreement

(SLA), COL can provide speedy backup

disaster restoration by automatically

backing up and recovering specific files

through a private dataline connection.

Our well-defined SLA specifies the backup

schedule and restoration time after a

disaster to meet near zero tolerance

requirements.

Customers will definitely benefit from

the synergistic collaboration and a fully

managed enterprise-class IP-based

backup service via Wharf T&T’s Point-to-

Point/Point-to-Multipoint private dataline,

Metro Ethernet (ME), and COL’s ISO27001

and ISO20000 dually certified data centre.

Key Features• Encrypted and up to 600x daily data size reduction for backup of Windows File System (File Servers)

• Fully automated tapeless data backup for Virtual environments, remote offices, and Local Area Network (LAN)/

with over 300 participants. The seminar discussed the importance of deploying

green ICT, how to leverage cloud computing to maximise ROI, and the benefits of various ITaaS such as online backup, e-marketing

The seminar concluded successfully with a lively “question and answer”

session. “We want to introduce the advantages and benefits of ITaaS on the
