Make Shri Sai your friend, philosopher and guide.....

Diwali is to strengthen ourselves personally and with others. A special

significance of Diwali is to "Fill the heart with the oil of love". Place it in

the wick of single-pointed mind and light it with the knowledge of truth

and remove the darkness of ignorance. This is a festival that unites all

human regardless of region or sect, with the aim of strengthening rela-

tionships and celebrating life.

Shri Sai has showed us in many instances the significance of light. A ray

of light helps us see the way towards our destination and similarly our

Sadguru helps us to lead towards the goal of our life. Light from the di-

yas remove the darkness and show us the path, so follow the light of

Guru and be near Him. By His sitting posture Baba means to say, if you

want to see my Light, be egoless and most humble and meditate on my

toe through the opening between the two branches - index and middle

fingers - and then you will be able to see my Light. This is the easiest

means of attaining devotion.

We need to always remember that Shri Sai is Unique, in that, he lived his

message through the Essence of his Being. His immense energy in the

body was moving and is still moving. He lived with the common folk as

a penniless fakir, wearing a torn kafni, sleeping over a mat while resting

his head on a brick, begging for his food. He always radiated a mysteri-

ous smile and had a deep inward look. Shri Sai lived, and behaved as

"God descended on Earth". He came to serve mankind, to free us from

the clutches of fear.

Let us make Him our friend, philosopher and guide and attain self

realization.

Eighth Step – Sakhya Bhakti

Madhavrao Balwant Deshpande alias Shama

―This Masjid is my mother‘s home. I am Sai‘s own child. This being so, why is the

mother so furious with the child to-day ?‖ As a child is to the mother, so was

Madhavrao to Baba. When such a relationship always existed, why should it happen

this way to-day ? When the mother kicks who will take care of the child?

Madhavrao lost all hope of survival, at that time.

They always indulged in loving disputes and addressed each other in familiar terms.

Baba loved him exceptionally, like His own son..... .....and nobody could get around

Baba as he could.

―My Shama may be mad but I am fond of him. He has an unusual affection towards

Me. I am greatly concerned about him.‖

In a burst of affection, Baba then pinched Madhavrao‘s cheek. Listen then to the lov-

ing conversation between God and His devotee at that opportune time. Then Baba

started to speak : ―Yes, indeed, I have come for that and that is why I started giving

you food and got fondly attached to you.‖ Shama was His favorite devotee; and the

saint fulfilled the devotee‘s wish, which was asked for in ignorance and fondness,

whether it was proper or not. This was his own vow.

SAI’S NEWS FROM TIME MACHINE Value of lighting lamps:

Lighting lamps has always been Shirdi Sai's most important activity while He lived.

Baba used to light lamps in Dwarakamai. But for the oil needed in those little

earthenware lights that he lit, he depended on the generosity of the grocers of Shirdi.

He had made it a rule to light earthenware lamps in the masjid every evening and he

would call on the grocers for small donations. But there came a time when the gro-

cers got tired of giving oil free to Sai Baba and one day they bluntly refused to oblige

him, saying they had no fresh stocks. Without a word of protest Sai Baba returned to

the masjid. Into those earthenware lamps he poured water and lighted the wicks.

The lamps continued to burn deep into the midnight. The matter came to the notice

of the grocers who now came to Sai Baba with profuse apologies. Wouldn't Sai Baba

kindly pardon them? Sai Baba pardoned them, but he warned them never to lie again.

"You could have refused to give me the oil, but did you have to say that you didn't

have fresh stocks?" he admonished them.

DEVOTEES EXPERIENCE

DEVOTEES CORNER

This is one of the incidents, which I want to share with you. I was working

with a multinational company and was staying alone in New Delhi, India,

away from my home. Suddenly due to certain circumstances, I resigned from

my job and I had no job in my hand at that time. I trusted in Saibaba I stayed

very cool. Gradually I had no money left and had I had to pay my house rent.

I just trusted in Sai Baba and left everything on him and I knew he is going

to look after me. I gave a post dated cheque to my land lady thinking that in

the mean time I could arrange for money. I was depressed but deep in my

heart I had a feeling that he is going do everything fine. My landlady pre-

sented the cheque in the bank on the mentioned date and I just didn't know

what to do. Three days passed and I was very scared that my cheque is going

to bounce and my landlady will create a problem for me. Four days passed

nothing happened. I went to her and asked her that whether she has presented

the cheque or not. She said that she has and it is cleared also. I was shocked

to hear that. I checked it out with my bank and they told me that they have

not received any cheque. I again enquired with my landlady and asked her to

cheque it with her bank once again. She again checked and told me that the

money has been credited to her account. I knew its Saibaba who has saved

me. Till date u have no clue of it that how it happened .I prayed to him and in

a weeks time I got another job with a big multinational company where I am

earning very well. Every time when I was in a difficulty he has some or the

THE DREAMS TRAIN

(Dreams Of Saibanisa after Undergoing Bypass Surgery on 17-5-1996)

Compiled by Saibandhu Raghu Raman Satulury

19-12-1996: Before retiring to bed, I asked Sai to speak on spiritualism. Sai appeared as a

college student and said:

1. A section of people are under the illusion that they are spreading spiritu-

alism by deputing their henchmen who speak for them to earn name and

fame by adopting short cut methods. However that achievement will be

at the cost of loosing the very purpose of ‗spiritualism‘.

2. Life history of a saint is as deep as ocean. The more you get into, the

more is left to be known .It will be purely one‘s own ego if somebody

thinks that he knows everything fully well. Keep this in mind while par-

ticipating in satsanghs. God‘s blessings will automatically follow good

actions.

Pomp and show mar spirituality.

———————————————————————————————————————————

I want to share the Miracle with all the Sai Devotees. I am from Abu Dhabi. In the month of October, I

have to go for my vacation to India. For this, I have to get my passport renewed, as it was to expire on 15th

of this month. When I went to renew the passport the Indian Embassy required my maiden passport. I

never knew where it is, as it was very old. I searched here in Abu Dhabi but couldn't find the same. I called

my parents who are in Madras and asked them to search for it. They also didn't get it. We have a house in

New Delhi, so I requested my Dad to go to Delhi to find whether it is available there. Meanwhile I re-

ceived a message to read the Sat Charithra within a day. I took the book to my office and found difficult to

read it in the office. After office, hours came home and finished the house holds work and managed to

complete the book in time. My dad left all his work and went to Delhi to find the passport. He searched in

all the rooms but was not able to find it. Finally he said only Sai Ram has to help in this case and entered

the Puja room. There he found a small box and when he opened to his surprise found the passport on the

top. It was exactly one week after I finished the book my mummy called from Madras that Dad had found

the old passport in Delhi. It's really a great miracle and Sai again proves that he helps the devotees who

really believe and surrender to him.

BABA'S MIRACLE - 11: BABA AS BHAKTA PARADEENA ~ (A RECORD OF THRILLING EXPERIENCES OF (LATE) DR.P.S.RAMASWAMI ~ (AN ARDENT

DEVOTEE OF SHRI SHIRDI SAI BABA)

The facts herein set down clearly demonstrate how one's absolute surrender to Baba blesses

one with his infinite and never failing grace which in turn generates all the noble qualities

like honesty and courage-honesty to confess one's errors, come what may, and courage to

constitute oneself into a majority of one and stare the world in the face, even if it should

have, blood-shot eyes! And by no means the least gratifying aspect of the situation is that

in the final analysis such a one is seen invariably to come out unscathed, the so-called copy

-book maxims incarnating themselves into little giants so to say, and forming an effective

bodyguard.

My appointment in the Naval Armament Inspectorate, Khamaria as Examiner-in-charge of

the manufacture of various components for a particular defence item involved meticulous

planning and provisioning of high-precision gauges to be used at various stages. Since we

were embarking upon the job for the first time in India, we had to obtain the blue-prints for

the purpose from the British Admiralty. They were in the from of one single schedule ca-

tering for the different marks in use including the one being made by us. My boss Lt. Cdr.

Rodney Todd by name, trained in England, was quite conversant with the practical aspects

of the work. Nevertheless, he left the whole thing to me, both because he felt I could do it

and it was the best way for me to learn. The result was I bungled, instead of confining

myself to the particular mark in view, I prepared a demand for gauges for all the marks as

given in the schedule. Quite a few of them had to be made in England, Since such sophisti-

cated technology for making the special steel and achieving -the Precision was not then

available with us. And so, the list as Prepared by me was forwarded and went through

different channels at higher levels without anyone detecting the grievous error.

None of us was wise to the ignominious blunder, least of all myself. It is difficult to imag-

ine what sleepless nights of anxiety and fear of impending doom would otherwise have

held me in thrall. For, as will be seen presently, my huge mistake was to cost to the govern-

ment quite an unnecessary loss of a few lakhs of rupees. This came to light only during the

visit of a high-ranking Naval Officer sent to review and report on the progress we were

making. While going through the records, he was taken aback to find that we had ordered

for so many gauges not required for our purpose and he was in a towering rage. He was

closeted with my boss whom he squarely took to task for such sheer incompetence amount-

ing to criminal negligence putting the government to the loss of a sizeable amount. What

explanation had he to offer for such a disgraceful lapse? And so on. Sitting in the adjacent

room where I could heat everything, I felt as if I were the target of the 'slinge and arrows of

the outrageous' insults sought to be heaped on the head of my boss since the actual blame

lay at my door. The impact on me of the realization of the grave magnitude of my stupid error was stunning. I felt

the need for courage to speak out the truth. After all, courage and honesty are not things to be put on the shelf, to be

used when convenient. They should be the rules of life. Baba sees to it that it is so if one avoids trying to deceive

oneself and Him into the bargain.

Further, this would not be the first time when an unreserved confession of truth had steered me clear through "the

sharks and shoals" of life's ocean. So, nerving myself up and invoking Baba's grace for my aid, I went and knocked

for permission to enter. I went in begging to, be excused for the breach of decorum in thus intruding but nevertheless

requesting to be heard. Surprise and annoyance writ large his face, the officer from the NHQ demanded to know

what the dickens I meant. I said the statement I wished to make would explain everything. I could see he was arrest-

ing his inclination to tell me to get out and asked with obvious impatience, "Yes, what, do you wish to say?" "Just

one thing sir. I said, "and that is, the responsibility for this unfortunate state of affairs is primarily if not solely mine.

Hence, it is I that should take the choking".

This momentarily nonplussed him. Presently he asked me authoritatively, "Who is running the show here, Rodney or

you?'. "No doubt, he runs the show, sir, "I replied," but may I point out that situation de facto is that he has to take

my word for granted for the purpose. This is the first occasion when he has had to regret it." The officer's mood sud-

denly changed, he seemed a bit overwhelmed by the unexpected turn things were taking. He calmed down, rang for a

chair and asked me to sit down. "Now that you own up responsibility for the sorry mess", he continued, "will you

please say how it happened and why?" "Pure ignorance, sir," I said. "That I can see what a blithering idiot I was,

though I acted in good faith. However, I arn not asking for any leniency. I plead guilty to the charge if what is tanta-

mount to criminal negligence'. Silence reigned in the room for a minute or so. Collecting himself, the officer ex-

claimed, "Well, I don't know what to do with you, Mr, Ramaswami! You have so frankly owned up the error for

which you alone are not responsible. That calls for the frankness on my part too. I myself was guilty of having com-

mitted such blunders when young. "Then, turning to my boss, he continued, "The only thing to do now is to forget

the whole affair. A few lakhs are nothing to the government. We need honesty. I shall recommend for the loss to be

written-off". "You can go, Mr, Ramaswami, thank you." He concluded.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the full significance of the dramatic manner in which acting in a split second

as He always does, Baba had turned the tables to retrieve my position.

Story for this Week: ― Krishna and Narakasura‖

Bhoomi Devi (mother Earth) had a son named Naraka. Even though Naraka was

the son of a divinity, he had the nature of a demon. Naraka was powerful and he

took pleasure in terrorizing the inhabitants of the three worlds.

Narakasura would raid and plunder the kingdoms of the three worlds. He did not even

leave the women and would kidnap them for his own personal harem. Narakasura

heard that Indra, the king of the devas, had thousands of divine elephants in his army.

Now Narakasura, greedy that he was, wanted to possess everything, so he attacked the

heavens.

Indra was helpless as he watched Naraka's minions plunder the heavens. Naraka him-

self began pursuit of the devas. While pursuing the devas, a glimmering object far

away caught his eye. Upon inspection, he realised that the glimmering object was

mother Aditi's (the mother of the devas) earrings. He assaulted mother Aditi and

grabbed her earrings.

Now Indra, feeling humiliated at his loss and even worse that his mother was as-

saulted, wanted revenge and he knew that there was only one person who was a match

for Naraka. It was Krishna.

Indra reached Krishna's palace when Krishna was spending quality time with his wife

Satyabhama. He told Krishna about the happenings and begged him for his help.

Krishna was enraged that Naraka might lay his hands on mother Aditi and said that

Naraka must die for his insolence.

Satyabhama looked annoyed because Krishna was about to leave her. Wanting to

please both Satyabhama and Indra, Krishna decided to take Satyabhama with him into

battle.

Krishna summoned his mount Garuda (a giant eagle) and made way towards Naraka's

fortress. An impenetrable barrier of magic mountains surrounded Naraka's fortress.

The mountains were such that a barrier would come up from any side that Krishna

tried to enter the fortress. Krishna, unperturbed, hurled his mace at the barrier and shat-

tered the entire mountain range in one blow. A downpour of magical weapons

rained down on them. Krishna fired multiple arrows and destroyed all the weapons.

In this manner Krishna destroyed countless other magical barriers and finally

reached Naraka's fortress.

Naraka's palace was guarded by the five-headed demon Mura. Mura hurled count-

less weapons at Krishna, but Krishna shot each one down with his bow and arrow.

Then Krishna picked up his flying discus and hurled it towards Mura dislocating

Mura's five heads. Mura fell to the ground, dead.

Krishna challenged Naraka to battle and killed him easily. Bhoomi Devi then sang

hymns in praise of Krishna and begged him to take Naraka's son Bhagdatta under

his protection. Krishna placed Bhagdatta on the throne and then freed all of Na-

raka's prisoners. The devas showered Krishna with flowers from the heavens.

Not many people know that the other name of Diwali is "Naraka Chaturdasi".

What Makes me proud to be a Hindu?

There are multiple reasons why I am proud to be a Hindu.

Hinduism is the oldest religion in this world. It has been in-

vaded countless times over the thousands of years, yet it

s t i l l r e m a i n s s t r o n g . T h i s s h o w s t h a t

every Hindu has a brave heart. Another reason that I am

proud to be a Hindu is because we respect every single liv-

ing thing in this world. We believe in peace and love and we

go against violence. Being a Hindu means that your values

remain with your heart and your heart remains with God.

Our faith for God has always stayed strong and it always

will. These are some of the reasons that I

am proud to be a Hindu.

SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM SATCHARITA ~ CHAPTER 40 Contributed by: [email protected]

Continuted from last issue…..

About a month afterwards, the Sannyasi came in a tanga and stopped in front of

Mr.Deo's house at about 10 a.m. Deo thought that he came for subscriptions.

Seeing him busy with the preparations of the ceremony, the Sannyasi said that he had come

not for money but for meals. Deo said - "Alright, very glad, you are welcome, the house is

yours." The Sannyasi - "Two lads are with me." Deo - "Well, come with them." As there

was time (2 hours) for dinner, Deo enquired where he should send for them. He said that it

was not necessary as he would come himself at the appointed time. Deo asked him to come

at noon. Exactly at twelve noon, the Trio came and joined the dinner party and after feeding

themselves went away.

After the ceremony was finished, Deo wrote a letter to Bapusaheb Jog complaining of

Baba's breach of promise. Jog went to Baba with the letter, but before it was opened Baba

spoke - "Ah, he says that I promised him to come but deceived him. Inform him that I did

attend his dinner with two others, but he failed to recognize Me. Then why did he call me at

all? Tell him that he thought that the Sannyasi came to ask for subscription money; did I not

remove his doubt in that respect and did I not say that I would come with two others, and

did not the Trio come in time and take their meals? See, to keep My words I would sacrifice

my life, I would never be untrue to My words." This reply gladdened Jog's heart and he

communicated the whole of the reply to Deo. As soon as he read it, he burst into tears of

joy, but he took himself to task mentally for vainly blaming Baba. He wondered how he was

deceived by the Sannyasi's prior visit and his coming to him for subscriptions, how he also

failed to catch the significance of the Sannyasi's words that he would come with two others

for meals.

This story clearly shows that when the devotees surrender themselves completely to their

Sad-guru, He sees that the religious functions in their houses are duly executed and com-

plied with all the necessary formalities.

Sai Ram. The above story also shows the love of the Guru for His disciples and that Maya is

at the beck and call of the Guru. The intellect of Deo worked when the first reply was re-

ceived from Shri Bapusaheb Jog confirming the participation of Baba in the Udyapan cere-

mony dinner along with two others. "He knew that Baba never went to any place except Ra-

hata, Rui and Nimgaon in person. He also thought that nothing was impossible to Baba as

He was all-pervading and that He might suddenly come, in any form He likes and fulfill His

words".

But see the chamatkar of Baba and how Deo failed to recognise Baba in the Sannyasi. Even

his coming with two others did not trigger the realisation that Guru came to fulfill His

promise. Only when Baba clarified to Bapusaheb Jog, realisation dawned in the mind of

Deo.

The above story also shows that Guru is indeed Brahma, Vishnu and Siva (the Trinity) and

Sai Baba confirmed that by attending the Udyapan dinner as Trio / Trinity. Sai Ram.

Quintessence from Shri Sai Baba’s Philosophy (By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao) ~ Contribution by "Shashank"[email protected], Mrs and Mr

Anand

Chapter 35: The Wheel of Time and the Pangs of sorrow and Death

Death is inevitable for every being. The birth and death of every being is bound by one's own Karma.

Death means the departure of the individualized soul (jeeva) from the body. Ignorant men do not under-

stand the nature of the soul. Soul is the Life force pervading every atom of the physical, Astral (subtle)

and causal bodies of the Jeeva or the individual and is of the nature of pure consciousness. The soul is

also called the Atma of the individual or Jeevatma. When the life breath is deserting the body, the kith

and kin should try to control their feelings of sorrow and depressions. At the same time everyone has to

undergo the same, as per his Karma. Realize that the body is impermanent and as such one need not feel

any undue concern for it. Soul resided in the water of our heart. When the soul departs the body, the wa-

ter in the heart continues to decrease and the part below the tongue gets dry. That is a sure sign of death

lurking nearby. Remember and chant God's name then. If we did not become a slave to the body and its

needs and did not resort to a sinful life, and do not worry over our mundane attachments, we will die a

peaceful and easy death. The kind of death we get depends on our prior Karma. The Jeeva does not stick

to one body alone. So, we need not worry over death. When the tenure of life comes to an end only, the

soul leaves the physical body.

Whoever makes a total submission to God, such people alone deserve a peaceful death. We should not

depend on the body. Our mind hosts the remnants of desires, vasanas and sins of our previous births.

They obstruct us in realizing the presence of God. We should overcome them before death comes to us.

Before the body dies, one should try to conquer all temptations of lust caused by the senses through self

control, constant prayer meditation and satsang. If we rely on the inner light, we will realize that every-

thing earthly physical and sensual is transitory and will be able to concentrate our entire mind on our

Guru God Sri Sai Baba and pray to Him. Human life is woeful and transient. Why should we cry then

when such fleeting life deserts us? If we pray to God, who is everlasting, we will get such a boon. God

is eternal but all living beings have to die some day or the other. The powerful thoughts of desires and

attachments we had entertained in our life, crowd our mind at the time of death. In order to get rid of

them, we have to chant the name of the Great Lord always and remember Him. If we are not afraid of

death at any stage of life, then we are really blessed. When the end is nearing, concentrate on the God

through Yoga which will reveal what is Atma and what is non-Atma, what is light and what is darkness;

what is bondage and what is freedom, what is knowledge and what is ignorance. This fact leads us to

understanding that remembering and praying God always is the only thing that will invest us with Divin-

ity. If we are blessed by God, we will certainly reach a state of sublimity beyond all physical and earthly

associations, because of the sorrowful and anxious environment. At the time of death, none of our friends

or relatives around us would be able to remind us about God or pray for us. Remember this and concen-

trate all your thoughts on God. Since death is inevitable seek the ultimate truth, the goal of life before the

life ends. In order to win over the constantly wavering mind, we should follow a highly disciplined and

orderly life. There are two things in every living being. While ‗Jeeva‘ in the body experiences the joy and

sorrow caused by its different Karma believing that the body is its ownself; the Jeevatma or the Atman /

Paramatma remains as a mere spectator. Jeevatma filled with ego (i.e as Jeeva) thinks of itself to be the

doer of all activities. Only when it realizes that it is not the slave of desires or habits, it will come to know

that no physical thing can ever touch it. Death means that Jeeva leaves the body and goes to Heaven or

Hell in order to enjoy or suffer the consequences of the virtuous or sinful actions on earth depending on

its past Karma. Thereafter it attains a new form and is born again on earth to fulfill the unfulfilled desires.

The body is only an impermanent residence for the Jeeva. That is why the Soul remains unadorned, form-

less and unaffected by everything that touches the body. Realizing the true nature of the Jeeva and the

Soul, if one keeps praying to God who resides in every soul. His Karmas of the previous births get de-

stroyed and is thus purified. His soul sheds the Jeeva Bhava and shines as the Pure Atman who is also the

Jagadatma i.e the Universal Soul or Paramatma. When there is real danger, time disappears. But we do

not see the danger of many of our problems and therefore we invent time as a means of overcoming them.

Time is a deceiver as it does not do a thing to help us to bring about a change in ourselves. Time is a

movement which, man has divided into past, present and future, and as along as we divide it, we will al-

ways be in a conflict. The first thing to understand is that we can look at time only with that freshness and

innocence of mind which we have already been into. We are confused about our many problems and lost

in that confusion. Now if one is lost in a wood, what is the first thing one does? One stops and looks

around. But we are confused and lost in life the more we chase around searching, asking, demanding and

begging. So first thing we must do is to completely stop thinking about death inwardly and when we do

stop inwardly, psychologically, our mind becomes very peaceful, very clear. Then we can really look at

the question of time of death and face it cheerfully. Can we put a stop to time? Can we live so completely

without facing death? Because time is sorrow, our memory remains and we are thinking about that pleas-

ure and that pain – we are looking back, wishing, hoping, regretting, so thought going over it again and

again, breeds the thing we call sorrow. So long as there is the interval of time which has been bred by

thought, there must be sorrow; there must be fear of death. Now we must think of death, which is an im-

mense problem to most of us. We know death. It is walking every day by our side. In order to meet death

in such a way all belief, all hope all fear about it must come to an end, otherwise we are meeting the ex-

traordinary thing with a premeditated anxiety, and therefore we are meeting it with time.

From the Editor’s Desk

There is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atma. Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the celebration of this inner light, in particular the knowing of which outshines all darkness (removes all obstacles and dispels all ignorance), awakening the individual to one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infi-nite, immanent and transcendent reality. With the realization of the Atma comes universal compassion, love, and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Anantham (inner joy or peace). Sai devotees may continue to write about their Sai-related activities, essays, articles or poetry and send to the email id

[email protected]. We shall put in our best efforts to include them in the upcoming newsletter. Unless the author

of the articles explicitly instructs not to publish his/her email id, we will publish them as a matter of routine practice.
