SEASON PROSPECTUS

The Tusculum men’s soccer program enters a new era in 2010 under the direc on of fi rst-year head coach Steve Voltz, welcoming a solid group of returners back into the fold alongside a diverse and talented recrui ng class. Tusculum, fresh off its seventh straight winning season and second consecu ve Food Lion South Atlan c Conference Tournament champion-ship, is poised to con nue building on the program’s previous success with a young and talented squad rich with promise.

Tusculum con nued to provide a diffi cult chal-lenge for the rest of the Southeast Region in 2009, pos ng a 10-6-2 record to fi nish fi h in the confer-ence before returning to top form and capturing the program’s third SAC Tournament tle. Several Pioneers garnered individual recogni on last season, including Preseason All-SAC First Team selec on Andres Jarquin (Guatemala City, Guatemala).

Coach Voltz’s squad returns three starters from last season, including senior defenders Dean Hopewell (Leicester, England) and Horton McKinney (Johnson City, Tenn.). The Pioneers are expected to rely heavily on a tal-ented group of newcomers, with as many as nine star ng spots open to intense compe on.

FORWARDS

Jarquin returns for his senior campaign to lead the Pioneer a acking corps, fresh off a strong fi rst season with Tusculum. The 5-8, 150-pound

forward posted a solid 2009 campaign, tallying six goals, seven assists and 19 points en route to an All-SAC Second Team selec on. Joining Jarquin in the a acking third will be a talented and diverse group of forwards, led by sophomore Petr Buzyan (Mars Hill, N.C.). Buzyan will challenge for playing me and a spot in the star ng 11 a er appear-ing in fi ve matches last

season.Freshmen Ivan Primak (Buenos Aires, Argen na) and Matheus An-

drade Silva (Basilia, Brazil) lead a talented group of newcomers, with each bringing a valuable and unique skill set to the Pioneer a ack. Primak joins the Pioneers from Saint Gregory’s College in Buenos Aires, Argen na, where he was a two- me Player of the Year at Colegio Americano de Quilto.

Silva comes to Tusculum from Colegio Dom Bosco in Brasilia, Brazil, and is expected to challenge for signifi cant playing me in the a acking third for the Pioneers. JT Carrino (Greeneville, Tenn.), Russell Sexton (Mor-ristown, Tenn.) and Mason Fox (Crossville, Tenn.) round out the Pioneers’ deep a acking corps. Carrino joins the Pioneers for his junior season as a transfer from the University of Tennessee where he played club soccer a er a stand-out career at Greeneville High School. Sexton comes to Tusculum from Morristown West High School, where he garnered Conference Player of the Year honors. Fox joins the program from Stone Memorial High School, where he was a two- me All-District performer.

MIDFIELDERS

Ma McKeever (Belfast, Northern Ireland) returns for his junior sea-son in an expanded role, as the 5-9, 150-pound hal ack is expected to begin the campaign in the star ng 11 for Coach Voltz’s squad. McKeever appeared in six matches for the Pioneers last season, including one start, while tallying an assist.

A trio of newcomers is expected to join McKeever in the star ng mid-fi eld, with freshmen Janik Bold (O erberg, Germany), Javier Por llo (Gua-temala City, Guatemala), and Cur s Berger (Stuart, Fla.) slated to open the campaign in the star ng 11. Bold, a 6-0, 175-pound freshman, joins the

Pioneers from Heinrich-Heine Gymnasium Kaiser-slautern in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he also played club soccer for TUS Hohenecken. Por -llo, a junior transfer from Middle Georgia College, comes to Tusculum a er tallying 11 goals and 25 points as a sophomore at the Cochran, Ga. school. Berger, a 5-4, 140-pound freshman, joins the pro-gram from Jensen Beach High School where he garnered Scripps Treasure Coast Player of the Year honors as a senior.

Freshmen Illya Gurynovich (Asheville, N.C.), David Montes (Coral Springs, Fla.), Jacob Norris (Maynardville, Tenn.), and Ray Cruz (Winchester, Tenn.) round out a deep group of midfi elders for the Pioneers, and will each compete for playing me.

DEFENDERS

Hopewell and McKinney return for their senior seasons to provide stability and experience to the Pioneer backline. Hopewell, a na ve of Leicester, England, played in nine matches last season, making six starts and tallying one assist in an injury-shortened campaign. McKinney appeared in

13 matches for Tusculum in 2009, making 10 starts in the back third for the Pioneers.

Slated to join the senior duo in the start-ing 11 is freshman Ma Davies (Blaxland, NSW Australia), who joins the Pioneers from Blaxland High School where he was a two-year captain and recipient of the Pierre de Couber n Award, given

to high school student-athletes who exemplify the philosophies of the mod-ern Olympics, both on and off the fi eld.

Freshman Drayson Davenport (Acworth, Ga.) and sophomore Jus n Williams (Nashville, Tenn.) are expected to compete for the fi nal star ng spot on the backline. Davenport joins the program from North Cobb High School in Kennesaw, Ga., where he was a two-sport star in football and soc-cer, while Williams looks to earn valuable playing me a er si ng out last season. Freshman Robert Reed (Rutledge, Tenn.), an All-District performer from Grainger High School, is also expected to compete for playing me on the backline.

GOALKEEPERS

Sophomore Andy Goellner (Denver, Colo.) and junior transfer Keagan Graham (Memphis, Tenn.) are expected to ba le for the star ng nod at goalkeeper for the Pioneers, as both bring tremendous skill and experience to the pitch. Goellner appeared in three matches for Tusculum last season, making one start and pos ng a 1.18 goals against average. Graham joins the Pioneers from Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Ga., where he recorded 73 saves and a 0.82 goals against average last season.

Sophomores Trevor Lund (Hebron, Conn.) and Clay Jarrell (Tullahoma, Tenn.) round out a deep goalkeeping corps for the Pioneers, and will both compete for playing me behind Goellner and Graham.

OUTLOOK

With an experienced corps of returners, along with a diverse and tal-ented recrui ng class, the Pioneers are poised to build on the program’s success from the last three seasons and return to the elite levels of the NCAA Division II. If Coach Voltz’s young and gi ed squad can come together and fi nd its iden ty quickly, the Pioneers should improve on their fi h-place preseason ranking in the South Atlan c Conference.

SEASON IN REVIEW

The Tusculum College men’s soccer team entered the 2009 campaign looking to build upon one of the most successful seasons in pro-The Tusculum College men’s soccer team entered the 2009 campaign looking to build upon one of the most successful seasons in pro-gram history and posted the program’s seventh straight winning record, compiling a 10-6-2 overall mark and capturing its second consecu- ve Food Lion South Atlan c Conference Tournament tle.

Tusculum garnered several individual awards, including Anteneh Lemma’s second consecu ve Daktronics NCAA Division II All-America honors. Lemma was joined by junior Sven Meyer on the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Team, while Meyer and fellow junior Lucas Paulini each garnered NSCAA/adidas All-Southeast Region Third Team honors.

The Pioneers placed seven players on the All-SAC Teams, including fi rst team selec- ons Lemma and Sco Lucky. Paulini was named to the second team alongside team-mates Andres Jarquin, Mark Joseph, Nick Rich, and Phillip Hagen. Lemma, Paulini, Rich and Meyer were also named to the SAC All-Tournament Team as Lemma garnered MVP honors.

Tusculum started the season strong, winning four of its fi rst fi ve matches. A er notching a solid 2-0 win over Queens (N.C.) in the season opener, Coach Bre Teach’s squad traveled to Ohio for a pair of diffi cult road tests. Tusculum proved to have plenty of fi ght, rallying for a 2-2 draw against No. 19 Ashland and coming from behind to de-feat Tiffi n 3-2 in extra me to return home with a 2-0-1 record.

The Pioneers con nued its streak of extra me matches against Milligan, rally-ing for a 2-1 away victory over the Buff aloes on Jarquin’s over me

winner in the 95th minute to push their early-season record to 3-0-1. Tusculum con n-ued the heroics against Lander, scoring a pair of second-half goals to notch a 2-1 come-from-behind victory and run its unbeaten streak to fi ve matches to start the season.

Tusculum suff ered its fi rst setback of the campaign in the opening match of its SAC schedule, falling to Lincoln Memorial by a score of 2-0 to slip to 4-1-1 on the season. The Pioneers rebounded to win three of their next four matches, including a 7-0 home victory over Brevard and a pair of pivotal wins over Newberry and Mars Hill to climb back into the race for the SAC tle.

The Pioneers suff ered another setback at Belmont Abbey, falling to the Crusaders 2-1 in extra me to fall to 7-3-1 on the season. Tusculum responded with a 3-2 win over Catawba, pulling within one game of fi rst place in the conference standings with two matches remaining on the SAC slate.

Coach Teach’s squad then faced a pivotal matchup with top-ranked Lees-McRae in a rematch of the 2009 Southeast Region champi-onship, which TC won 2-0 to advance to its fi rst-ever Elite Eight appearance. Tusculum would be unable to produce a similar result against the Bobcats, falling to Lees-McRae by a score of 4-1 a er LMC broke a 1-1 e with three goals in a span of 12 minutes late in the second half.

The Pioneers dropped each of the fi nal two matches of the regular season to fall out of the SAC championship race, falling vic m to a late rally by archrival Carson-Newman, before Lenoir-Rhyne notched a 5-0 win over TC in the regular season fi nale.

Tusculum exacted revenge on the Bears in the quarterfi nal round of the SAC Tourna-ment, forcing extra me with a late second-half goal and advancing to the semifi nals in a penalty kick shootout. The Pioneers were then given a chance to avenge their earlier loss to Carson-Newman, drawing the No. 15 Eagles in the semifi nal round in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Pioneers took full advan-tage, riding a brace from Lemma en route to a 2-1 win over the Eagles,

and a spot in the tournament championship match against Mars Hill. Tusculum did not waste the opportunity, opening an early 1-0 lead on Lemma’s 23rd minute strike before Jarquin stretched the lead to 2-0 with a highlight reel goal in the 34th, taking a headed cross from Joseph and execu ng a near-perfect bicycle kick for the fi nish. The Pioneers would hold the lead from there, playing s fl ing defense to defeat the Lions by a score of 2-0 and capture the program’s second straight SAC Tournament tle and the third in school history.

TUSCULUM HISTORY Tusculum College is the oldest college in Tennessee and the 28th oldest in the na on. In addi on, Tusculum is the oldest coeduca onal ins tu on affi liated with the Presbyte-rian Church (U.S.A.) and an early na onal pioneer in the admission of women. Tusculum accepted women students early in its history, and it is notable that by the turn of the 20th century more than half of its students were women. The roots of Tusculum College are buried deep in early American fron er history. In 1794, George Washington was president of a young country and the state of Ten-nessee was s ll two years away from becoming a reality. In what is now East Tennessee, Hezekiah Balch and Samuel Doak, Presbyterian ministers educated at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), were ministering to the pioneers of what was the southwestern fron er of the United States. They also desired to meet the educa onal needs of these Scots-lrish se lers. Doak and Balch were visionaries ul mately seeking the same goals through the rival colleges they established. Tusculum College as it now exists descends from two schools. The fi rst, Greeneville College, was chartered in September 1794 by the General Assembly of the Territory of the United States South of the Ohio River, and established by Hezekiah Balch. Samuel Doak and his son Samuel Witherspoon Doak founded the second as Tusculum Academy in 1818. Tusculum Academy operated in a log cabin adjacent to the present site of Tusculum College. When the academy became Tusculum College in 1844, Andrew Johnson, who was to become 17th President of the United States, was one of its trustees. A merger in 1868 formed Greeneville and Tusculum College. In 1908, Greeneville and Tusculum College merged with Washington College, crea ng Washington and Tusculum College. This union dissolved in 1912, and thus evolved modern-day Tusculum College. The College received formal accredita on by the Southern Associa on of Colleges and Schools 15 years later. The College takes its name from the ancient Roman town where the great statesman and educator Cicero had an academy at his villa. Cicero taught what are now called the liberal arts. They actually were cons tuted by the prac ces a ci zen must develop to par cipate eff ec vely in leading his or her community - to play a vital role in civic aff airs.

TUSCULUM ACADEMICS As a Civic Arts ins tu on, Tusculum College prepares students to be eff ec ve ci zens, recognizing that they will need prac cal wisdom to par cipate in com-muni es and enrich life me experiences. Tusculum’s academic calendar is diff erent from all but three other colleges in the country. The academic year is divided into two semesters and our students take four 3 1/2 week courses each semester, totaling eight courses for the year. Classes are taught one at a me, with a four-day break in between. Three 3 1/2 week summer sessions are also off ered. This allows our students to complete course requirements for the baccalaureate degree in four calendar years. Our unique Civic Arts program is being used as a model for other colleges and universi es that seek to promote community, responsibility, and civic develop-ment. The Carnegie Founda on for the Advancement of Teaching has recognized Tusculum as one of about a dozen schools (including Duke University and the University of Notre Dame) with a strong commitment to those ideals. As part of our emphasis on service-learning, we ask students to assess the needs of the community and complete a project to address those needs. Beyond helping key popula ons, Tusculum students gain valuable experience in solving problems, apprecia ng diff erences, and working with others. Tusculum College is a learning community where students and faculty members spend concentrated blocks of me together exploring important areas of

knowledge, developing and refi ning thinking and communica on skills, wrestling with the meless controversial issues that characterize the human condi on, and applying themselves to the prac cal solu on of problems. Whether in the tradi onal on-campus Bachelor of Arts programs or in the evening Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts programs for working adult-students, Tusculum College’s dis nc ve academic calendar lets students concentrate on learning one sub-ject at a me. It’s a tradi on grounded in the belief that we best realize the poten al of each individual when faculty members and students work closely together with the ul mate aim of enriching the lives of our students and preparing them to contribute posi vely to their communi es. For many tradi onal students, an ini al reason for choosing Tusculum is our focused calendar, which allows students to take one course at a me. For others, its our dis nc ve programs of study, from specialized areas such as Ath-le c Training, Business Administra on, and Museum Studies to strong arts and sciences areas such as Biology, English, and Psychology. Tusculum is well known throughout East Tennessee for the eff ec veness of its Teach-er Educa on programs. Students are well prepared for careers in early childhood and elementary educa on, in several secondary educa on subject areas, in K-12 programs in Physical Educa on and Visual Arts, and in Special Educa on. But what o en seals pro-spec ve students’ decisions to join Tusculum’s community is the people.Tusculum a racts topfl ight professors for the same reason that we a ract students: small classes with close interac on between professors and students, the focused calen-dar which allows concentrated study, and a Civic Arts curriculum that emphasizes com-munity.

Our professors are mo vated and mo va ng. Excited and exci ng. Whatever the major, you’ll fi nd that Tusculum’s academics are innova ve, and that our faculty is commi ed to the success of our students.

THE TUSCULUM CAMPUS Located in Greeneville, Tenn., Tusculum College lies in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains between Knoxville and the Tri-Ci es (Bristol-Johnson City-Kingsport). Our wooded 190-acre campus has over 25 buildings, nine of which are listed on the Na onal Register of Historic Places. The Albert Columbus Tate Library, one of our Na onal Historic Sites, was built in 1910. The library is experiencing a major mul -million dollar renova on and expansion that will more than double the size of the current library facility, bringing our library space to 34,467 square feet. The Tate Library previously encompassed 12,000 square feet, and is incorporated into the expanded and renovated building. We also have two on-campus museums, one holding archives with materials da ng to the College’s beginnings. The Andrew Johnson Presiden al Museum and Library includes the Charles Coffi n Collec on containing materials from the Collegeís original library, the Andrew Johnson Library containing books, papers, and memorabilia from the 17th President of the United States, and the College Archives containing documents related to the history of Tusculum since its founding. Tusculum’s loca on is convenient to shopping and entertainment, and our students enjoy access to such recrea onal opportuni es as backpacking, hiking, whitewater ra ing, fi shing and snow skiing. The city of Greeneville and Greene County have a combined popula on of 65,000. Knoxville and the Tri-Ci es are within a 70-mile radius of the campus.
