This year we have new journals, notebooks, home storage, desk accessories, crafting kits, wrap, gift bags and cards…Our design team have been working closely with our handmade paper suppliers, whose dedicated craftsmanship brings the designs to life beautifully. Our work with stationery suppliers is contributing to some great projects; GET Paper’s work in AIDS awareness and Papeterie’s work to re-establish rural producer groups is invaluable to the communities they support.

This stationery is handmade in India from 75% elephant dung and 25% cotton rag,

by Papeterie. Papeterie was started in 1995 to promote handmade recycled

paper and products and to help small paper producers. Its paper has the advantage of being eco-friendly as well as giving a boost to the rural industrial sector. The dung used in these unique stationery items is

collected from Rajasthan. Nothing is wasted – once the fibre has been

extracted for the paper, the leftover dung is used as a fertiliser.

A SHAPII artisan at work…

SHAPII (Salay Handmade Paper Industries, Inc) and GET Paper’s artisans use tiny pressed flowers and dyed pressed leaves to make these card toppers, all of which are found locally. SHAPII’s paper is also made from local grasses and leaves. Production has helped bring real economic stability to the small seaside town of Salay and employees at SHAPII have access to a wide range of benefits such as medical care.

The basic raw materials for the handmade paper are waste paper, waste cotton fabrics from the garment industries, agricultural waste like banana fibre, straw and water hyacinth. The paper is lifted manually and dried in the sunlight.
