Note from the Club...Preparing for the Slopes

Skiing and snowboarding can result in both minor and major injuries if you are not prepared. Skiers and snowboarders often require specific conditioning and workout routines to not only perform better and prevent fatigue, but to help reduce the risk of injury on the slopes.

Strength, flexibility, endurance and agility drills for skiers and boarders are essential for both recreational and the expert skiers. Most skiers return to the slopes after months away. While some athletes participate in other sports during the off-season to stay in shape, many are weekend warriors. no matter what type of skier you are, you could wind up with minor aches, pains or a serious injury if you don’t spend a little time preparing for the demands of your sport. Skiing and boarding require both technical and physical skills including strength, endurance, agility and balance. Muscular strength improves your ability to relax and still maintain control, while making quick adjustments needed on uneven terrain. All the major muscle groups of the body, especially the core, are used for skiing. A great strength exercise is a single leg squat. When strength training is combined with speed, quickness and agility training, power is developed for your stamina. An exercise that creates power is plyometrics, fast explosive moves, like box jumps. For cardiovascular endurance, a good preparation exercise is road, mountain or stationary biking. it builds the heart and lungs and focuses on the leg muscles used during skiing. the best stretches for skiers and boarders focus on the lower extremities. one great core stretch is a core twist. Stand with your knees slightly bent and your arms crossed in front of you. Slowly look over one shoulder and let your whole body follow until you feel a good stretch in the back and side. Hold five seconds and repeat in the other direction. Hamstring and quadricep stretches are also recommended for both skiers and boarders.

enjoy the slopes!

Turtle Trivia Some interesting facts about turtles and tortoises: • Turtles have been on the earth for more than 200 mill ion years.

The earliest turtles had teeth and could not retract their heads.• Several species of turtles can live to be over a hundred years

of age. One documented case of longevity involves an adult Indian Ocean Giant Tortoise that when captured as an adult was estimated to be fifty years old. It then lived another 152 years in captivity.

• Turtles live on every continent except Antarctica.• Turtles will l ive in almost any climate warm enough to allow

them to complete their breeding cycle.• While most turtles don’t tolerate the cold well, the Blanding’s

turtle has been observed swimming under the ice in the Great Lakes region.

• Turtles range in size from the four-inch Bog Turtle to the 1500 pound Leathery Turtle.

• The shell of a turtle is made up of 60 different bones all connected together.

• Most turtle species have five toes on each limb with a few exceptions. Turtles have good eyesight and an excellent sense of smell.

• Turtles are one of the oldest and most primitive groups of reptiles and have outlived many other species. One can only wonder if their unique shell is responsible for their success.

W ell, the year is almost over and we will have our 2011 budget approved by the middle of november. thanks to Walt Keane, our board treasurer and association staff, we have

successfully kept our homeowner assessments the same amount for yet another year and we will actually be reducing the assessment for 2011. our reserves are over 100% funded and our Association’s future looks very strong and promising. you can review the budget on our

community website located at www.sierracanyonreno.com. Scroll down under the community tab and click on front page. As we continue on into 2011, association staff would like to know what you as residents would be interested in as far as event programming this coming year.

We will be emailing you a survey of possible resident programming for 2011 and value your input. Please take the time to fill out the emailed survey and email them back to us. thank you in advance for participating! Winter is right around the corner and everybody should be close to winterizing your sprinkler system if you have not done so already. the association common areas have been winterized and we will be finishing out the year with a few more landscape projects within Sierra canyon. the city of reno will be maintaining all residential streets within Sierra canyon and the snow removal plan for the city of reno is posted on our community website.
