New Services:We are constantly looking at new services to provide our members and community.

And, I’m excited to say, that we have recently added an ATM machine in the chamber lobby. As many of you know, the chamber serves the community by operating the local NCDMV License plate agency. We serve approximately 2,300 customers per month and, while the state does not accept credit cards, the ATM offers the convenience of cash on hand without leaving our office. We will be offering even more services in the coming months so be on the lookout!

New Members:It is always exciting to introduce additions to our membership. Join me in welcoming

our newest WRCC member…

Scotton Shoe ShopLocated in the heart of historic downtown Madison, let’s

welcome Scotton Shoe Shop as one of WRCC’s newest members. Family members Brian, Becky and Kurt Scotton operate this family-owned business, which has been a mem-ber of the downtown since 1934. They specialize in shoe and boot repair, but can repair any leather product from purses to saddles. Custom-made leather products and their own line of products are available. In addition, they also offer Orthopedic Footwear special ordered to fit your feet. You can contact them at 101 East Murphy Street, Madison; by phone at 336-548-1083 or email them at [email protected].

Also, a personal thanks to all of our current WRCC members who have renewed their memberships this past month. We appreciate your continued membership. As a non-profit, our future depends upon your support of WRCC!

Coffee Reminder:Be sure to join us for our next WRCC Coffee event on Thursday, February 18th at Al-

ways and Forever Florist in Rockingham Square. Our recent coffee sponsored by Roseann Staaf and Allen Tate Realty, had an outstanding turnout and we thank all who attended.

I encourage you each to invite two guests to all of our WRCC events. A fellow chamber member who doesn’t regularly attend and a non-member who you would like to see join our local WRCC!

Let us know how we can help your business grow!

In an effort to recognize the many contri-butions made to the early childhood education field countywide, the Board of Directors of the Rockingham County Partnership for Children has established a special Champion for Children award to be given in April 2010 at the Early Childhood Educators Recognition Ceremony. The Champion for Children award will recognize an individual, nominated by the community, who has made significant contributions of time, talent and/or financial resources to the early childhood community in Rockingham County.

The Rockingham County Partnership for Children (RCPC) is a non-profit organization that administers Smart Start and More at Four funds for the use of enhancing services for children birth through five years of age. Our mission is helping all children enter school healthy and ready to succeed. RCPC works towards this mission by seeking out agencies, organizations and individuals that work with young children and their families and looking for opportunities to collaborate and enhance or create needed services.

The Champion for Children award seeks to honor an individual who has consistently enabled our mission through their commitment to quality early childhood services. The nomination form is available under the current events section at www.rockinghamkids.org or by calling the office at 336-342-9676. Completed nomination forms must be postmarked by March 1, 2010 to receive consideration for this year’s award.

Whether your “community” setting — work site, faith community, school, neighborhood — is considering starting a community garden or you are thinking about joining a garden near you, the primer walks you through the options, steps and resources to ensure success. The Reidsville Area Foundation is partnering with Rockingham County Cooperative Extension to help provide resources for community gardens in Rockingham County. This is a great opportunity to involve all generations in projects that will benefit us all. Please contact Brenda Sutton, Director of Rockingham County Cooperative Extension, for more information about how you and your organization can contribute 336-342-8230 or [email protected].

The Rockingham County Business & Technology Center (RCBTC) announces that it has completed its technology upgrades funded by a $10,000 grant from the e-NC Authority. The upgrades include a wireless projector for its boardroom, a mobile electronic whiteboard tool that electronically captures meeting notes, new computers for staff, memory upgrades for computer lab PCs, two large monitors for use in the business counseling room and foyer and software upgrades.

Clients of the RCBTC will reap many benefits from these upgrades. First, the 40-inch monitor in the business counseling room improves the ability of the Center’s business counselors to provide computer-based assistance such as QuickBooks® and other financial analysis. The large screen allows clients to better view the work of the business counselor without people having to huddle around a small screen. The business counseling room is also enhanced by a new Mimio® whiteboard tool. This allows notes made during counsel-ing sessions to be captured electronically and saved for future reference or printed directly from the whiteboard to the printer. This will allow entrepreneur and small business clients to spend more time listening and learning and less time writing down every detail of meet-ings. With the upgrades to the computer lab, clients will benefit from the RCBTC’s ability to continue to evaluate and implement new tools that require more computing power.

The RCBTC is an e-NC Authority Business and Technology Telecenter designed to create an entrepreneur-friendly, technology-enabled environment in Rockingham County. The RCBTC helps entrepreneurs learn how to plan, start and grow businesses, while making sure they understand how to use technology to be competitive in today’s global marketplace. For more information call (336) 342-7853 or visit their web site at www.rcbtc.org.
