Combining Aston Martinsunique character with an uncompromising design philosophy, the DB9 was borne out of a synthesis of traditionalcraftsmanship, high-tech manufacturing, modern componentand use of the finest materials. The DB9 is both a full-bloodedsports car and a hugely capable grand tourer. Whether inCoupe or Volante form, it offers a supreme combinationof driver involvement, character, luxury and refinement.Beautifully styled, the DB9 never fails to stir the soul withits unique sound, power and performance.

This purebred sports car is also a technical triumph, its beautsignifying aerodynamic efficiency, its power unencumberedby weight, its devastating straight-line performance paired withexquisite handling. All great sports cars strive to balance thesequalities, and the DB9 creates an experience that is both uniqand unforgettable. What the driver sees, hears and feels is inharmony. The reward is total involvement: a level of engagemethat truly stimulates the senses, that re-ignites a passion fordriving. But an Aston Martin is also about luxury, indulgenceand enjoyment it is a feast for the senses. Sure enough, themagnificent exterior styling of the DB9 gives way to a sumptuocomprehensively equipped cabin, trimmed in the finest materEvery element is perfectly conceived, from the 6.0-litre V12engine to the hand-stitched seats and carefully selected interiwoods. Nothing is out of place.

A great sports car ne eds a great engine it isthe heart of any high-performance machine. Inthe DB9s case, that great engine is a powerfulyet refined all-aluminium 6.0-litre V12. It p roduces350 kW (470 bhp) and 600 Nm (443 lb ft) oftorque. That gives a power to weight ratio of199 kW/tonne (267 bhp/tonne) one of thehighest figures in its class.

Performance is enormous, yet usable. Top speedis up to 306 km/h (190 mph) and accelerationsees 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds for both theautomatic and the six-speed manual.

Despite these immensely impressive figuresand the instant nature of the throttle response, the DB9 can also relax. Eighty per cent ofthe V12 engines torque, or pulling p ower,is available from as little as 1500 rpm, whileenormous mid-range performance providesinstant overtaking power almost regardless ofengine speed, or even which gear the car is in.

Aston Martins have always sound ed like true

thoroughbreds and the DB9 is no exception:the 6.0-litre V12 has been described as oneof the finest-sounding engines in production. The exhaust is tuned not only to be efficientbut also to provide the appropriate musicalaccompaniment. Under hard acceleration, the V12 has an exhilarating roar; when cruising, the growl becomes muted and melodic, hintingat the power within without being brash andobtrusive. The DB9 offers a choice of two rearmid-mounted transmissions, both allowing thedriver superb interaction with the car.

The six-speed Touchtronic 2 fully automattransmission uses shift-by-wire technologyand replaces the conventional gear lever wdashboard-mounted buttons to select ParkReverse, Neutral and Drive modes. If preferred, or where driving conditions allomagnesium alloy paddles sited behind thesteering wheel enable instant, F1-style gearchanges, providing the choice of rapid andinvolving fingertip gear changing.

Unlike many other sports GTs, the DB9 alsooffers a six-speed manual transmission, featua conventional gear change and high-capactwin-plate clutch.

The optional Sports Pack (Coupe only)accentuates the DB9s dynamic character anhigh-speed driving qualities. Aston Martinsdynamics engineers set out to provide theultimate in high-speed handling while retainin

    everyday driving comfort and refinement.

Developed to meet the specific demands ofthe most discerning driving enthusiast, theDB9 Sports Pack was tested extensively atthe renowned Nrburgring circuit in GermaThe Sports Pack features seve ral notablerevisions to provide an even more focuseddriving experience, including new anti-roll baruprated springs and recalibrated dampers, working in harmony with the lightweight, forgaluminium alloy wheels to offer exceptionalhigh-performance driving capability.

DESIGN No sports car manufacturer has a greaterdesign heritage than Aston Martin. Responsiblefor some of the most beautiful sports cars evermade, Aston Martin imbues every model withunderstated elegance and graceful styling, achieved through harmonious proportions, taut surfacing, a ground-hugging stance andthorough attention to detail.

An Aston Martin is subtle, not at tention-seeking.The Coupes side profile is clea n and distinctive, with a single-sweep roofline that flows throughto a distinctive tail. Key Aston Martin designelements include the distinctive grille, metal sidestrakes, signature rear window shape and wide, curvaceous haunches.

Good design, however, is not just about form;it is also about function.

An Aston Martin is by definition very fast, so itneeds to be aerodynamically efficient. It mustbe superbly stable at high speed even theexhaust silencer is aerodynamically shaped to

help achieve this. The result is that the DB9 drivesarrow-straight at high speed yet, like all greatAston Martins, it does so with supremeelegance and grace. The DB9 was designedfrom the outset as both a coupe and aconvertible, an uncompromising approach thatepitomises the engineering philosophy behindthe car. The DB9 Volante is therefore one ofthe most structurally rigid and best-handlingconvertibles in the world. It is also one of thefastest and quietest.

As with all Aston Martins, beauty and balanccritical. The DB9 Volante is perfectly proportfrom every angle, roof up or down. The convetop retracts at the single push of a button aswiftly stows beneath a hard tonneau covercloses flush with the rear bodywork, leavinglines of the car flowing and unbroken.

The Volantes elegant folding fabric roof is lighdurable. A layer of Thinsulatematerial insuthe cabin from both noise and the elements the roof is up, and optimises headroom for driver and front passenger. There is also noof practicality the folding fabric roof is comwhen stowed, allowing the DB9 Volante to its rear seats and ample boot space.

Safety is a major consideration in a convertSpecial tilt sensors detect the possibility of roll-over and deploy two strengthened hoopfrom the rear seat headrests. Further protecis offered by the windscreen A-pillars, whichave been rig tested to withstand more thatwice the total weight of the car.

ONTROL Great sports cars must handle superbly. Theyshould respond quickly and predictably to drivercommands; they should be nimble and agile. To achieve the low weight that is the startingpoint for such agility, all the DB9s major bodyand mechanical components are made fromeither aluminium, magnesium alloy or advanced, lightweight, composite materials.

The front-to-rear weight distribution of theDB9 is a perfect 50:50, with 85 per cent of thecars mass sited between the front and rearaxles. The aluminium V12 engine is mountedas far back as possible in a front mid-enginedlayout. The compact aluminium transaxlehousing the gearbox and final drive ispositioned at the rear, forward of the rear axle.

Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) are alsoemployed. EBD balances the front-to-rearbraking bias, to give optimal braking performaIn an emergency, EBA sensors detect whenmaximum braking is required and automaticaapply the appropriate force. The DB9 offers class-lead ing safety with arigid aluminium structure designed to provia supremely robust passenger cell. Occupaare further protected by extruded aluminiumcrumple zones at the front and rear of the cCrash and safety testing for the DB9 wasconducted at the world-renowned VolvoSafety Centre in Sweden.

Dual-stage driver and passenger airbags,seat-mounted side airbags and seat-beltpretensioners offer additional protection. In the Volante, roll-over hoops are automaticaand instantly deployed from the headrests ithe event of an accident. The DB9 is equippwith an integrated Passive Anti Theft System

(PATS), which uses a rolling code electronicignition key to prevent unauthorised enginestart-up. It also includes the very latest in vehalarm systems, featuring parametric sensorsand double locking for doors.

A lightweight and rigid carbon-fibre propellershaft, housed within a cast aluminium torquetube, transfers torque from the front mid-mountedengine to the rear mid-mounted transmission, helping to give the DB9 its superb poise, balanceand stability. The result is a car that can be drivenwith great ease and precision, thanks to theflow of communication through the steering.

The DB9 excels not because it has myriadelectronic controls added in an attempt toovercome compromise, but because it hasan inherently light and rigid structure, perfectweight distribution and finely tuned suspension.

More than any other quality, the DB9 seeks toserve up the richest driving experience in thesports GT class. It serenades the driver with itsbalance of engine and exhaust notes, providesscintillating performance and agility and has aseductive blend of fluent steering and linearcontrols. This combination of performance andluxury makes the DB9 both an exceptionalout-and-out sports car and an ultra-refined GT.

The DB9 cabin is focuse d on the driver, who sits as low and as close as possible to thecars centre of gravity. Combined with the rigidbody structure and all-aluminium, double-wishbone suspension, the result is unfilteredfeedback of the cars dynamic behaviour. This unparallele d two-way communication car to driver, driver to car is at the very coreof the DB9s design philosophy.

The steering, power-assisted for lightness, i ssuperbly responsive, helped by the cars lowweight and excellent balance. The large discbrakes 355 mm diameter discs at the frontand 330 mm at the rear are ventilated andgrooved, to aid cooling and boost brakingperformance. Radially mounted, four-piston,monobloc calipers provide great stopping powerwith a firm yet progressive pedal feel.

The DB9s active safety the ab ility tohelp avoid an accident occurring in the firstplace begins with its inherent agility andresponsiveness. The lightweight, rigid body

structure and superbly tuned suspension andsteering are further aided by a host of advancedelectronics. These include Dynamic StabilityControl (DSC) and the latest-generation ABSbrakes which, should the system detect lossof grip, combine to help keep the car stableand balanced.

The DB9 is technologically sophisticated andmeticulously engineered. Its developmentprogramme included rigorous testing in locationsas diverse as Nardo in Italy, Death Valley in theUSA and inside the Arctic Circle in Sweden. In total, more than one million testing miles havebeen covered. Design and engineering innovationsinclude the Organic Electroluminescent displays(OEL) in the instrument pack and centre console, which provide greater clarity and resolution, aswell as LED (light-emitting diode) rear lampsdesigned to project further and react morequickly than conventional systems.

The propeller shaft is particularly innovative: it ismanufactured from carbon-fibre for lightness andimproved transmission refinement. The swan-wing doors are another elegant and ingeniousdesign feature, opening out and up to improveaccess and prevent the doors from being scuffedon high kerbs. The DB9 also pioneered the useof ultrasonic welding, which is 90 per centstronger than conventional spot welding andresults in a better finish, yet uses only five per

    cent of the energy.

Aston Martin has deve loped its own incrediblylight and strong aerospace-specification bondedaluminium structure. This unique VH (VerticalHorizontal) structure gives the DB9 one of themost structurally efficient body frames in the carindustry. Its huge rigidity aids handling, driverfeedback and safety. More than any other singlecomponent, the advanced aluminium structureis the reason for the DB9s extraordinarynimbleness, responsiveness and character.

ENGINEERING However, it is not just the body structure thais light and rigid. Other components have bdeveloped with weight reduction in mind, frthe aluminium V12 engine and transmissionthe forged aluminium suspension and aluminbodied dampers. Even the windscreen surrois cast aluminium, while the door frames aninner panels, steering column and gear chapaddles are all made from magnesium.

The result is that the DB9 is up to 1300 lb(590 kg) leaner than some other GT cars. Thathe equivalent of six adult males, plus luggagThis light weight, allied to class-leading rigidcontributes to improved acceleration, agilitysteering response, braking and fuel economas well as a significantly heightened drivingexperience. Lightness and balance make thwhole driving experience more pleasurable from the deft movement needed to open anclose the graceful, swan-wing doors, to thtouch and feel of every control on the dashboThe DB9, more than almost any other sp orcar, is in harmony with its driver, and in harmo

    with the road.

The DB9 is elegant, luxu rious and supremelycomfortable. Its cabin is hand-trimmed inbeautiful, natural materials primarily wood andleather and incorporates the latest in moderntechnology without resorting to sup erfluouscontrols or displays. There is a minimum ofdistraction even the satellite navigation screenfolds discreetly away when not in use. Everyelement of the interior is hand-made andhand-finished, from the cutting of the leather tothe carefully crafted wood. This is done not outof deference to tradition, but because a skilledcraftsman c an finish wood or leather to a farhigher standard than any machine. The le atheris particularly soft and supple, as you wouldexpect of Aston Martin, and is used throughoutthe cabin.

The wood trims are inspired by hand-finishedmodern furniture and there is a choice of five:Walnut, Mahogany, Bamboo, Tamo Ash andPiano Black. In every case, single-piece cutsare used, rather than tiny strips or thin appliqus.Crafting such large pieces of wood is only

    possible when done by hand.

The use of aluminium on the dashboard, instrument panel, centre console and doorhandles reflects the aluminium structure thatunderpins the entire car. The finish is stylishand contemporary, yet the material itself issteeped in automotive tradition.

The DB9 has exceptional equipment levels, asone would expect in a high-performance sportscar with GT levels of comfort and refinement. The drivers first interaction with the powerfulV12 engine is a blend of tradition and high-technology, with a touch of theatre. The ignitionis controlled by a stainless steel and glass ECU(Emotion Control Unit), designed to be as tactileand refined as a fine timepiece. The ECU isinserted into a special docking station setwithin the traditional clear glass starter button.Pressing the ECU flush with the surface of thestarter button fires the engine. After pressingonce again to stop the engine, the ECU risesout of its slot within the button so that it canbe removed.

The centre console h as clear, crisp graphics,

with a traditional analogue clock at the centreflanked by rotary controls for the heating andair-conditioning system. These solid, turnedaluminium controls also operate the audiosystem, integrated Bluetooth telephone andultra-quick Hard Disk Drive (HDD) satellitenavigation functions.

Audio is provided by the 700 W Premium ASystem with DolbyPro Logic II. Designedexclusively for Aston Martin, this system featuhigh-quality, fibre-optic electronics, which paudio signals with marvellous precision andnear-perfect clarity. The console also includeslot for the six-CD auto changer, while benethe centre armrest there is connectivity for iand MP3 players.

Full Bluetooth integration is standard on theDB9, enabling you to synchronise your mobiltelephone directory through the cars displascreens. It can also display the last 10 callsreceived, made and missed.

Aston Martins are hand-built cars, made toorder, and this bespoke approach enables tprovision of any combination of paint and leathtrim colours. There is, however, an extensivepalette of standard body colours and interiorfinishes, carefully chosen by Aston Martinsdesign team to complement the forms, materials and surfaces of the car.

Twenty-three standard paint colours areavailable, categorised as either contemporafast track or special, and varying from submetallics to the brightest hues. In addition, shades of the finest, softest leather, ninecolours of carpet and five choices of wood trcomplete the standard range. For the DB9Volante, there are eight hood colours availafrom Black to Sandstorm.

Standard features include satellite navigatio(where available), rear parking sensors,Bluetooth telephone connectivity, cruise copowerfold mirrors, tyre-pressure monitoringand heated front seats. Additiona l options aavailable, including diamond-turned alloywheels, personalised sill plaques and a brigfinish grille.

The DB9 was the first Aston Martin to beproduced at the companys factory at Gaydin Warwickshire. Hand-built by techniciansand craftsmen at a series of work stations,it benefits from the superior levels of finishand exclusive design details that would beimpossible in a mass-produced car. The

paintwork of each DB9 undergoes 50 manhours of painting, polishing and finishing toachieve the perfect surface.

ERITAGE Aston Martin is one of the worlds mostdistinguished sports car manufacturers. It has produced exclusive, hand-craftedsports car s for over 90 years. In that time, fewer than 45,000 Aston Martins have beenbuilt and more than 80 per cent are still in use, cherished, driven and raced by enthusiasticowners around the world.

The founders of the company, Lionel Martinand Robert Bamford, had a clear vision: tocreate sports cars with a distinctive character;cars built to a high standard that wereexhilarating to drive and own; cars with power, beauty and soul. Those values remain integralto our approach.

In 1964, Aston Martin made its big-screendebut when a specially customised DB5 starredalongside Sean Connery in Goldfinger, the thi rdJames Bond film. More than 40 years on, thespecial relationship with 007 is still going strong the legendary British secret agent drives anAston Martin in both Casino Royale andQuantum of Solace.

Racing remains firmly intertwined with thecompanys DNA. Aston Martin made anevocative return to international sports carracing in 2005 with a pair of Works-preparedDBR9s. Also in 2005 Aston Martin Racingintroduced the DBRS9, a car very closely basedon the production model, for the GT3 class.

In 1947, Aston Martin was acquired byindustrialist David (later Sir David) Brown, andsoon produced the first of the famous DBseries of cars. These iconic models were amongthe most beautiful and desirable of all sportscars of the 1950s and 1960s and helped defineAston Martins image and ethos, as well assecuring its long-term future.

David Browns period of ownership also sawAston Martin win at Le Mans in 1959, withthe DBR1, and secure victory in that yearsWorld Sportscar Championship.
