Letter From 2009-2010 ChairmanOver the last two years, I have been honored to serve as chairman of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and play a role in the success we have experienced. This is a special time for our city because we are realizing the results of our hard work and vision of years past, while at the same time setting a course for tomorrow that will allow future generations of Oklahomans to share in our experience.

We began 2010 with a celebration of our victory in the MAPS 3 election but quickly returned to work on issues vital to our business climate. While our city and businesses weathered the economic recession better than most, our region and state were certainly not untouched. This led to the Chamber’s work in protecting businesses from bearing the brunt of our state government ’s budget cuts.

We saw a number of accomplishments at the capitol in passing several key initiatives important to the business community. Some of these included the Oklahoma Quality Events Act, which will provide Oklahoma communities with a new tool to attract and retain significant, revenue-generating quality events; and securing funding to keep ODOT’s eight-year construction plan intact, which will allow a number of major Oklahoma City area projects to remain on schedule. We were also successful in passing education legislation that will set the stage for future improvement and reform, and you can be certain that your Chamber will be at the center of the effort to improve public education in our region and state.

Oklahoma City ’s stable environment, quality workforce and affordability are attracting new jobs and investments to the region. In 2010, 95 companies announced an expansion or relocation here, bringing nearly 4,200 jobs and more than $344 million in capital investment to our city.

These are just a few of the many successes we had in 2010 – all of which were made possible by the more than 5,000 Chamber members and their devotion to making Oklahoma City a better place to live, work, play and visit. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to lead the Chamber and represent the business community over the last two years. Together, we have achieved significant progress for our city, and I know that, as we continue to work together, we will see our visions and plans realized.

Sincerely,

David Thompson President & Publisher OPUBCO Communications Group 2009-2010 Chamber Chairman

As the economy in Greater Oklahoma City continues to strengthen, it becomes more and more important to protect the environment in which our businesses operate. During 2010, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber took significant steps toward creating a positive business climate through lobbying efforts, campaign activities and the creation of the Greater OKC Chamber Political Action Committee.

A sTROnGER BusInEss CLIMATE, A sTROnGER ECOnOMy

The Chamber kicked off 2010 with the launch of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber Political Action Committee (Greater OKC Chamber PAC).

“In today’s economic conditions, it is vital that the business community collaborate to elect state lawmakers and other officeholders who will advocate issues of critical need and strategic importance to our metropolitan area,” said Brad Krieger, Arvest Bank, Greater OKC Chamber PAC Chairman.

The launch of the PAC was just the start of the Government Relations team’s many accomplishments in 2010.

A major victory was the passage of the Oklahoma Quality Events Act. Oklahoma City’s status as a world class city includes the ability to host notable events such as major horse shows at State Fair Park, Big XII and NCAA sporting events, and events on the Oklahoma River. This act gives Oklahoma City and surrounding communities a new tool for attracting and retaining these major events.

The Chamber’s efforts also helped secure the necessary funding to keep ODOT’s eight-year construction plan intact. It is hard to miss the transformation happening in and around

downtown. Several extensive projects, including completion of the I-40 realignment, teardown of the existing I-40 bridge and the construction of the Downtown Boulevard, play an important role in these changes. With each of these included in ODOT’s plan, it was crucial that this funding remain intact.

These successes, along with the passage of incremental workers’ compensation reform, funding for the state’s seed capital program, and many others, equaled significant progress in strengthening Greater Oklahoma City’s visitor industry and business climate.

sTAnDInG uP FOR EDuCATIOn

A long-standing advocate for education, the Chamber spent much of 2010 working toward significant education reforms.

“While the MAPS for Kids projects continue to benefit our students, it is time for us to place a renewed focus on what happens within the classroom,” said Roy H. Williams, Chamber president and CEO. “We must look beyond the bright walls of newly constructed schools and ensure that the students within are receiving the quality education they need to succeed.”

In an effort to secure more education funding, the Chamber works with local leaders, legislators and other organizations, to enhance Oklahoma’s Race to the Top application – which could have

provided $175 million in federal funds for education reform. While the state was unsuccessful in acquiring the funding, the application process opened the door for in-depth discussions about education reform, leading to the enactment of multiple bills that will serve as building blocks for future reform efforts.

The Chamber’s PAC raised $47,950 in its first year.

The Chamber joined more than 100 businesses and organizations to form the One Oklahoma Coalition to defeat State Question 744.

With a large number of positive stories, accolades and significant progress seen, Greater Oklahoma City has become a hotbed of economic activity. And with the help of the Chamber’s economic development team, 2010 was further proof that Oklahoma City is a great place to live, work and play.

BOEInG ChOOsEs OKC

In August, The Boeing Company announced it would relocate 550 jobs to Oklahoma City from California. The company cited Oklahoma City’s cost effectiveness, proximity to its clients, and incentives as reasons the metro area was chosen over other cities.

“For a company like Boeing to make such a substantial move to our market area speaks very highly of Oklahoma City,” said Robin Roberts Krieger, executive vice president economic development. “When you look at our quality of life, pro-business environment and competitive incentives, Oklahoma City is clearly a desirable place.”

The Chamber, along with the Oklahoma Department of Commerce and the City of Oklahoma City, played a key role in securing the expansion. The Chamber launched a new website, www.abetterlifeokc.com – highlighting aspects of Oklahoma City including housing, education, employment, activities and more to show Boeing employees in Long Beach the many advantages of living and working in Oklahoma City. This website will be a useful tool for the Chamber when working on future business relocation and expansion projects.

The region saw significant growth during 2010, including the creation of 4,159 new jobs and the expansion or relocation

to Oklahoma City of 95 businesses. With average salaries of $56,770, these projects will contribute more than $9 million in local tax revenue annually.

RETAIL DEVELOPMEnT IMPORTAnT TO CITy’s GROWTh

A key part of Oklahoma City’s bright future is community development. Diverse retail offerings are often viewed as a quality of life issue when companies and individuals are considering relocating, making Oklahoma City’s competitive edge important to the Chamber’s business recruitment efforts. Additionally, adding new retailers to the local market will ensure that the city’s tax base remains strong. The Chamber, along with officials from the City of Oklahoma City, is working to expand the region’s retail offerings.

“In today’s economy, it is evident that a strong tax base is necessary to support a city’s economy,” said Williams. “This city has seen incredible success in its recent past and we will continue the work to advance that success. Bringing new retailers to our market is key to our future growth.”

In order to continue to grow the region’s retail offerings, the Chamber is working to alter the way national retailers perceive Greater Oklahoma City.

“It’s about getting (retailers) out of conventional thinking, and asking them to abandon a research model that has traditionally worked for them,” said Alison Oshel, CPM, director of community redevelopment. “We tend not to behave like typical retail consumers in buying patterns and trade areas, so we have to get in front of them and ask them to look at us differently.”

Bringing WorLDthe

Citizens of Greater Oklahoma City, and certainly members of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, know that Oklahoma City is a great place to live, work and play. And while the city plays host to nearly 4 million visitors every year, 2010 brought a number of high-profile groups to OKC and gave the city a chance to really show what it has to offer.

MAyORs’ COnFEREnCE shOWCAsEs OKC

In June, Oklahoma City was the site of the 78th Annual Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. As the host city, Oklahoma City provided the perfect backdrop for attendees. By planning everything from ground transportation to evening events, daytime excursions to the perfect welcome, the Chamber worked tirelessly to ensure that attendees received a red-carpet welcome.

“We had an opportunity to bring them in, and if they were treated nicely and they had a good time, chances are they went back and said nice things about us,” said Mayor Mick Cornett. “I believe we exceeded their expectations in every way. Our visitors saw us as a city that is trying to build a higher quality of life for our citizens, just like they are in their cities.”

While in Oklahoma City, the more than 1,000 people attending – including mayors, their families, other city delegates, representatives from Washington, national media and Business Council members – saw a variety of attractions and venues including the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Bricktown, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, State Fair Park, the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, and more.

After five days in Oklahoma City, and four fabulous evening events put on by the host committee led by the Chamber, it was obvious

Oklahoma City had left quite an impression on the attendees.

“Oklahoma City is clearly a place that is proud of its roots while being equally focused on its future as a modern, metropolitan urban center. It was remarkable to see so many residents engaged in the actions of their city government,” said Mayor Buddy Dyer of Orlando, Fla. “In nearly every encounter with a resident, we heard about the MAPS program and how it revitalized downtown Oklahoma City and set the city on course for a better future.”

CVB sEEs IMPROVED VIsITORs nuMBERs

The Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) saw a jump in visitor traffic to Oklahoma City during 2010. Group tours increased by 80 percent from 2009 and the total number of hotel rooms sold was up 4.2 percent to 3,203,381.

And with Oklahoma City also playing host to events including the 10th annual Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, the 2010 Creativity World Forum, and nearly 20 equine events, people from around the country and the world were able to experience Oklahoma City’s world-class offerings.

“Of the 13 Districts of Creativity around the world, Oklahoma is the only district in North America,” said Mike Carrier, president

of the Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We were honored to host the 2010 Creativity World Forum and the more than 1,000 entrepreneurs, business leaders, technology experts, educators, scientists, artists, students and policy makers who came to Oklahoma City to share ideas and learn from each other.”

The key to successful networking is going where the movers and shakers are gathered. Whether you’re welcoming a new company at a grand opening, helping a Chamber member market their business through TRDC, or networking at schmoozaPalooza, wherever you find the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber is the place to be.

EVEnTs OFFER nETWORKInG OPPORTunITIEs

In today’s fast-paced business environment, networking is key to making new personal and business contacts, and the Chamber is the central hub for the best networking events in Greater Oklahoma City.

During 2010, the Chamber hosted more than 50 events for its members and the public. Attendance at these events surpassed 13,000 for the year, showing that the business community looks to the Chamber to provide quality events for networking and for information about the state of Greater Oklahoma City.

“The networking opportunities available through the Chamber are a tremendous benefit,” said David Harlow, BancFirst. “The opportunity to network with peers – all of whom have similar goals for our respective businesses and for our city, with a focus on the future – is one of the greatest benefits the Chamber has to offer.”

The high-quality events put on by the Chamber are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to connecting members. For many members, the Chamber is a key source of essential information and intelligence in Greater Oklahoma City.

“The most valuable aspect of membership for us is the

information that is regularly shared through newsletters, public forums and the networking the Chamber encourages,” said Loren Greshman, Southern Nazarene University.

MEMBERs COMMITTED TO A BETTER OKC

Despite a national economic downturn, members invested in the Chamber at record levels in terms of membership and investment in 2010. The 2010 Total Resource Development Campaign (TRDC) reached a record total of $2,347,322, thanks to the 168 volunteers from 115 Greater Oklahoma City companies.

Chamber members are the organization’s biggest advocates when it comes to recruiting new members and creating a stronger business community.

“The Chamber makes great things happen for the benefit of everyone. I have reaped the rewards of my membership many times over,” said Judy J. Hatfield, Equity Commercial Realty, LLC. “This is a membership I would not give up. I would encourage all business people to become a member, get involved in the Chamber activities, and see the positive results it brings to their companies.”

With membership numbers continuing to grow, the Chamber will continue its role as the go-to source for information and networking opportunities throughout Greater Oklahoma City.
