Our Vision

No senior will go hungry or experience social isolation.

Our Mission

Enrich the lives of seniors and assist them in maintaining independence by making nutritious food,

social contacts and other resources easily accessible. To the extent possible we will also serve

disabled and institutionalized individuals. We accomplish this through an organization that is

community-based, emphasizes volunteer involvement and is financially sound.

Our Values

Integrity We work in a trustworthy and ethical manner demonstrating honesty and fairness.

Respect We value the self worth and dignity of individuals and honor their choices.

Inclusion We are strengthened by diversity of ages, cultures, abilities and ideas.

Creativity We are innovative and willing to take risk.

Compassion We treat each individual with care as a member of the Loaves & Fishes family.

Commitment We demonstrate quality performance and dedication to our mission.

It all began 40 years ago when three local women saw a need in

their neighborhood and set out to fill it. Using borrowed space in the basement

of a church in Southeast Portland, they cooked and delivered 14 meals served on

paper plates and wrapped in foil to homebound seniors. The key to their success

then, as today, was community partnerships. When they needed food, money for

equipment or space for meal centers, they looked to the community for volunteers

and financial support. Since 1970 Loaves & Fishes Centers has been able to

provide a meal to every senior who requests one and without a waiting list. Most

of the senior nutrition programs in this country are not so fortunate.

Page 5: 2010 Annual Report

Through 34 meal centers in Multnomah, Washington and Clark

counties we serve seniors in need of a meal and social interaction. We also

provide Meals-On-Wheels delivery to homebound seniors. With the help of more

than 8,200 volunteers and generous community support and partnerships, we

now serve 5,000 meals daily and more than 1.25 million meals each year.

Message from Board President & Executive Director

In 2010 Loaves & Fishes Centers kicked off its 40th year, providing more than 1.25 million hot, nutritious meals to 16,290 seniors and disabled individuals in the greater metropolitan area.

It was a year of reflection and celebration of the fact that our organization delivers much more than a meal. Our very personal service of meeting a client’s basic nutritional needs also provides choices for independence, health and friendship.

Many stories were shared this year describing the impact of our program on so many lives through the years and also on the impact on the lives of thousands of volunteers who were so honored to provide the services. The success of Loaves & Fishes has been built on the strong leadership of past board members and through our professional and caring staff who nurture the deep community roots which have always been the safety net for those we serve.

Now our challenge is to look forward and continue to be the visionary and a committed community organization that values the premise that no senior will go hungry or experience social isolation. Our seniors are blessed to live in the community with you. They are comforted by your concern and valued by your respect. We look forward to working with you to continue our legacy for the next 40 years. Thank you for making the difference in the lives of so many.
