Constructed in 1970 for a cost of $3.1 million, the Bison Sports Arena was built to house the Depart-

ment of Athle cs and the Department of Health, Physical Educa on and Recrea on. With a sea ng capacity of up to 6,000 fans for college basketball games and wrestling matches and 2,200 for indoor track and fi eld meets, the Bison Sports Arena has hosted several premier events. The arena hosted NCAA Division II na onal wrestling championships in 1971, 1976, 1983, 1991 and 1997, many North Central Confer-ence and high school state indoor track and fi eld championships, the fi rst two NCAA Divi-sion II na onal indoor track and fi eld champion-ships, and one NCAA volleyball championship. The Bison Sports Arena also housed the 2008 NCAA Wrestling West Regional, the fi rst postseason Division I wrestling event to be held at NDSU. The Bison wrestlers have the luxury of a fi rst-class prac ce facility on site.

The Bison Sports Arena

A generous dona on from Bison wrestling booster John L. McCormick led to the complete renova on of the 6,300-square-foot McCor-mick Wrestling Complex in 2000. The training area includes a fi tness and cardio room and a separate team lounge with video equipment. The Bison Sports Arena measures 320 feet wide and 48 feet high. Its 150,639 square feet of space is divided into three levels. A main fl oor of 102,000 square feet includes a wood basketball fl oor and an all-weather ar fi cial surface for basketball games, track meets,

wrestling meets, tennis and volleyball matches. Offi ces, lockers and classrooms are also located on the main fl oor including a well-equipped training room with a walk-in whirl-pool bath. The second-level ac vity deck includes racquetball courts, the McCormick Wrestling Complex, and an extensive weight room. The third-level press box and storage area complete the indoor fl oor plan.

Maughan Quick FactsAge: 68Born: March 21, 1941Hometown: Canonsburg, Pa.College: Minnesota State MoorheadGraduated: 1964Compe on: Two- me NAIA na onal champion at

123 pounds; NCAA Division I champ at 115Coaching Experience: Head coach at NDSU, 1964-

present (44 years, 443-136-12 record)Educa on: B.S. in English, Minnesota State Moor-

head, 1964; M.S. in educa on, NDSU, 1966.

When it comes to North Dakota State, it is nearly impos-sible to talk about the success of the athle c programs without the focus of the conversa on turning to Bucky

Maughan. His four na onal championships, 30 individual NCAA champions, and 17 conference tles are nearly unrivaled in col-legiate athle cs.

Maughan begins his 47th season as the head wrestling coach at NDSU with an overall record of 457-153-13, establishing the Bison wrestling program as one of the top in the na on. He now leads the Bison into their fourth season of Division I compe on.

Maughan sent two wrestlers, Ryan Adams and Vince Salmin-en, to the NCAA Championships in 2009-10. Adams fi nished his career as a three- me NCAA qualifi er.

Since joining the ranks of Division I compe on in 2004-05, Maughan has coached seven NCAA qualifi ers.

Under Maughan’s guidance, the Bison captured NCAA Divi-sion II na onal championships in 1988, 1998, 2000, and 2001,

while fi nishing as the na onal runner-up six mes (1972, 1982, 1983, 1992, 2002, and 2004) and placing third six mes as well (1973, 1984, 1987, 1989, 1993, and 1995).

A constant in the Division II na onal rankings, NDSU had 32 fi nishes in the top 10, including a string of 15 straight seasons from 1981-1996. The Bison have also fi nished in the top fi ve 27 mes since Maughan took over the program in the 1964-65 sea-

son.During NDSU’s 40-year affi lia on with the North Central Con-

ference, Maughan helped produce 88 NCC individual champions, including four- me champs Brian Kapusta and Steve Saxlund. Maughan has coached over 150 All-American wrestlers and two U.S. Olympic team members in Brad Rheingans and John Morgan.

In 2003, Maughan received perhaps the highest honor of his impressive career when he was inducted into the Na onal Wres-tling Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Division II Wres-tling Hall of Fame in 1997, being joined by Bill Demaray and Rhe-ingans, two of Maughan’s na onal champion wrestlers.

A former Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestler, Maughan won two na onal championships in the same year. He won the 1963 NAIA 123-pound tle, followed up by capturing the NCAA Division I 115-pound championship. The NAIA cham-pionship was the second of his career, having also won the 1962 championship.

Maughan’s championship days began early while growing up in Canonsburg, Pa. He was a state high school champion and won 70 consecu ve dual matches during his high school career.

He has also stayed ac ve on the administra on side as well, serving me as a member of the execu ve commi ee of the Na- onal Wrestling Coaches Associa on and is also a former presi-

dent of the NCAA Division II Coaches Associa on.Maughan and his wife, Leota, are the parents of two sons

who also have wrestling in their blood. Jack was a two- me Division II All-American wrestler at North

Dakota State and was the head wrestling coach at Western Wres-tling Conference rival Northern Colorado for 20 years before step-ping down prior to the 2009-10 season.

Bret was a two- me All-American as well as a na onal runner-up at 118 pounds for the Bison in 1991 and is beginning his tenth season as assistant coach to his father at North Dakota State.

Western Wrestling Conference enters 5th season Coming off their best season, the Western Wrestling Conference, an NCAA Division I wrestling-only alliance, will begin its fi h year of compe on in 2010-11. Charter members of the Western Wrestling Conference include: the United States Air Force Academy, North Dakota State University, the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Northern Iowa, South Dakota State University, Utah Valley University and the University of Wyoming. The WWC had a breakout year in 2009-10 with three league wrestlers earning All-American honors. The conference has now had six All-Americans in its’ fi rst four years of existence. In 2010, Wyoming’s Joe LeBlanc (184) placed fourth at the NCAA Tournament, Northern Colorado’s Jus n Gaethje (157) fi nished seventh and Northern Iowa’s Jarion Beets (174) was eighth. All three of those wrestlers will return in 2010-11, as Beets and Gaethje are seniors and LeBlanc is a junior. During the 2009 NCAA Championships, LeBlanc fi nished fi h at 184 pounds, while UNI’s Moza Fay was sixth at 165 pounds and fi h at that same weight in 2008. In all, 17 wrestlers from the WWC qualifi ed for the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Na onal Championships, 14 via automa c slots and three at-large selec ons. The WWC had four compe tors who were seeded in the top-12 of their brackets. At 125 pounds, Wyoming’s Michael Mar nez was the No. 11 seed, while Utah Valley’s Ben Kjar had the fi nal seeded posi on, No. 12. In the 165-pound weight class, UW’s Shane Onufer was the No. 8 seed and his teammate, LeBlanc, was in the No. 7 slot at 184 pounds. The 2010 NCAA West Regional served as the conference tournament for the fourth straight season. The tournament was held in Frost Arena on the South Dakota State University campus in Brookings, S.D. In the team race, Wyoming came from behind and won the West Regional team tle by a half point over the 24- me defending champion Northern Iowa Panthers to claim its fi rst-ever West Regional team tle. The Cowboys also won the league’s regular season dual tle with an undefeated 6-0 record. Wyoming and Northern Iowa ed for the regular

season championship in 2009, and UNI was tops in the league a er both the 2007 and 2008 seasons. The league’s three major postseason awards in 2010 were given to Wyoming’s LeBlanc for Wrestler of the Year, Cole VonOhlen from Air Force as Freshman of the Year and Northern Iowa’s Brad Penrith as Coach of the Year a er his fi nal season. In the near future, the goal of the league is to replace the West Regional with the conference tournament, which would then serve as the NCAA qualifi er. The 2011 NCAA West Regional will be held on Sunday, March 6 at Clune Arena on the Air Force Academy grounds in Colorado Springs, Colo. The WWC recognizes student-athletes on both a weekly and full-season basis. Individual awards include Wrestler of the Week; All-Conference teams; an Academic All-Conference team; and Wrestler, Newcomer and Coach of the Year awards. The league also crowns a team champion following the conclusion of the regular season conference compe on and the postseason tournament. The governance of the Western Wrestling Conference remains primarily with the member ins tu ons. Scheduling of contests, assignment of offi cials and certain media rela ons func ons remain with member ins tu ons. With league members spread out over six states and two me zones, schools are required to compete against four league schools in dual ac on to be eligible for the regular season conference championship. Schools are encouraged to schedule as many conference schools as possible. A major benefi t of having a league that is geographically spread out so far is the added exposure – both in terms of media and recrui ng - in new des na ons. The conference affi lia on also generates much interest within the seven schools’ substan al alumni base, which numbers nearly 800,000 combined. North Dakota State, Northern Colorado and South Dakota State have all made the move from Division II to Division I since joining the WWC. UVU moved directly from Junior College (NJCAA) Athle cs to NCAA Division I and completed its reclassifi ca on during the 2009-10 season.

NDSU AT A GLANCE

North Dakota State University is a na onal research ins tu on acknowl-edged as a leader among its peers. With a growing student enrollment

and annual research expenditures topping $110 million, NDSU has enjoyed a remarkable period of achievement. According to President Dean L. Bresciani, “NDSU commands a powerful niche. We are unique in how we successfully balance being a student focused, land-grant, research uni-versity. That makes us dis nc ve among our peers.” The momentum comes from all sectors of the energized, vibrant university. In fall 2010, more than 14,400 students chose to enroll in undergraduate and graduate programs, se ng a record for the 11th year in a row. NDSU con nues to excel in areas of innova ve and technology-driven research. The Na onal Science Founda on ranks NDSU 122nd in total research expenditures among 679 ins tu ons across the country for fi scal 2008, with $115.5 million in research and development ac vi es. Of the 554 research universi es without a medical school, NDSU ranks 39th. For fi scal 2009, NDSU has reported

an es mated $114.2 million in research ac vi es for the next survey. During the past decade, NDSU has seen approximately $150 million in major new construc on, including such projects as the remodeling and expansion of the Memorial Union, expansion of the Wellness Center, Living-Learning Center East and West, Richard H. Barry Hall, Klai Hall and Niskanen Apart-ments. In addi on, work con nues on the $23 million greenhouse complex at the Agricultural Experiment Sta on main sta on, which will provide NDSU plant scien sts with research facili es among the best in the country. The state’s original land-grant university, NDSU reaches out to North Dakota residents. For example, the NDSU Extension Service had 590,103 face-to-face contacts across the state during this past fi scal year, including 23,455 youth who par cipated in 4-H programs and ac vi es. Bresciani, who was named NDSU’s 14th president on May 24 by the State Board of Higher Educa on, says a rare “window of op-

portunity” exists in North Dakota, and he has challenged the campus community to imagine how NDSU can help shape the state during the next century. “We all know that higher educa on is a powerful way to expand the economy of a state, diversify the tax base and create jobs,” Bresciani said during his 2010 State of the University Address. “While at the same me we honor our historic mission and focus on educa ng students, we also create the new knowledge that leads to new technologies that lead to new businesses that lead to new jobs.”

NDSU: yesterday and today The state’s fi rst land-grant university was established as North Dakota Agricultural College on March 8, 1890, and organized for educa onal work on Oct. 15, 1890. President Horace E. Stockbridge and a fi ve-member faculty welcomed the fi rst class of 30 students as they took a winter agricultural course. Old

Renamed in 1960 as North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Science, the ins tu on educates students for a mul -tude of career opportuni es. The university is comprised of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources; College of Arts, Humani es and Social Sciences; Col-lege of Business; College of Engineering and Architecture; College of Human Development and Educa on; College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Allied Sciences; College of Science and Mathema cs; College of University Studies; and College of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies. NDSU now off ers 46 doctoral programs, 66 master’s programs, an educa onal special-ist degree and nine cer fi cate programs. Students work closely with NDSU’s chem-ists, engineers, architects, musicians, pharma-cists, writers and other respected faculty who frequently are on the leading edge of research in their chosen areas. As of fall 2010, the university had a total of 900 ranked faculty and lecturers. The NDSU’s primary academic campus includes 42 square blocks and 101 university buildings, 12 non-NDSU buildings, eight leased buildings and 10 leased spaces, with build-ing, personal and outdoor property with a total value of $838 million. In all, NDSU is located on 18,746 acres of North Dakota land, which includes the main Agricultural Ex-periment Sta on at Fargo. There are 247 Agricultural Experiment Sta on build-ings and storage facili es at the main sta on and eight research Exten-sion centers across the state, and 18,488 acres dedicated to agricultural research. Dedicated to outreach eff orts, the NDSU Extension Service conducts a rigorous educa- on program in agriculture, human develop-

ment, nutri on and youth and community development through its county, area and state staff . The NDSU Extension Service had 590,103 face-to-face contacts across the state during this past fi scal year, including 23,455 youth who par cipated in 4-H programs and ac vi es. Members of NCAA Division I, the talented Bison athle c teams have enjoyed a long tradi- on of excellence. The student-athletes com-

pete in fi rst-class facili es – the Fargodome, Newman Outdoor Field, Ellig Sports Complex and Bison Sports Arena.

An energe cstudent body The NDSU stu-dent body is a talented, dedicated and enthusias c blend of interna onal and ethnic backgrounds. During the fall of 2010, undergraduate and gradu-ate students came from 52 North Dakota coun es and 42 states. The univer-sity currently has more than 1,300 interna onal students from 89 countries. NDSU has bilateral student exchange agreements with ins tu ons in Australia, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Korea, Latvia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zea-land, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. There also are memorandums of understanding with other countries such as Belize, China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. NDSU students fi nd it is easy to make

friends and get involved with campus life. They can par cipate in more than 200 student organiza ons to develop personal and social rela onships, explore new ideas, learn about people from around the world and augment their course work. The groups focus on academ-ics, special interests, service, performing and visual arts, religion and recrea on. There also are intercultural groups, honor socie es, fraterni es and sorori es.

Fargo: a great place to live, work and study

The home of NDSU, Fargo is a bustling metropolitan area that is o en listed as one of the best places to live in the country. Named an All-American City by the Na onal Civic League in 2000, Fargo-Moorhead is the largest community between Minneapolis and Sea le. About 187,000 people make their home in Cass and Clay Coun es. Accolades for the community come from a variety of sources. For instance, Fargo ranks ninth on the list of “Forbes Best Small Ci es for Business,” and Fargo-Moorhead was named the most secure mid-sized city in the United States by Farmers Insurance. Children’s Health ranked Fargo-Moorhead as the third best place to raise children. The

list considered 30 diff erent criteria, including crime and safety, educa on, economics, hous-ing, cultural a rac ons and health. A report from the American Lung Associa- on names Fargo one of the cleanest ci es in

the country. In addi on, Bicycling Magazine places Fargo among the na on’s 50 most bike-friendly metropolitan areas.

A campus commi ed to the future Advances have come and con nue on many fronts across the university, and the people of NDSU are op mis cally looking to the challenges and opportuni es of the future. As President Bresciani stated in his State of the University Address, “The future of our state is at a point of awakening – and our imagina on is the only limit to the future. We are the ones poised to make that future a reality.”

When he came to North Dakota State University in the summer of 2001, Gene Taylor inherited a department surrounded by a whirlwind of ques ons. In his fi rst year as the director of athle cs at North Dakota State, Taylor was asked to spearhead a compre-hensive study and evalua on of the Bison athle c depart-ment. He has guided the athle cs program through the unpredictable waters of reclassifi ca on to NCAA Division I from Division II. One of most important pieces of the transi on was securing conference affi lia ons for all 16 sports. The Bison are currently members of The Summit League, Missouri Valley Football Conference and Western Wrestling Confer-ence. Taylor also played an instrumental part of forming the

Great West Football Conference in February 2004, an affi lia on that gave the Bison football program an immediate home in Division I. He served as chair of the coaches commi ee. Also on the reclassifi ca on checklist: fundraising. Taylor spearheaded an increase in the Bison athle cs budget, which has more than doubled from $5 million in his fi rst year to almost $12.5 million for the 2008-09 season. He was recognized for his success by the Na onal Associa on of Collegiate Direc-tors of Athle cs in June 2008. Taylor was one of 29 recipients of the AstroTurf AD of the Year award as the Football Championship Subdivision Central Region winner. A student assistant to the associate athle c director in his undergraduate days at Arizona State University, Taylor came to NDSU a er a 15-year s nt at Navy (1986-2001) as an administra ve assistant, assistant cket manager, cket manager, assistant athle c director for ckets and opera ons, and associate athle c director. Taylor is a 1980 business management graduate of Arizona State, and he received his master’s degree in sports administra on in 1985 from St. Thomas University in Florida. He worked in the cket offi ce at Southern Methodist University in 1985-86 directly before joining the Naval Academy and was in the private restaurant business before that for fi ve years. His tenure at Navy included serving as the commissioner of the fi ve-team Collegiate Sprint Football League that includes Army, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Cornell. Taylor and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of a daughter, Casey, and a son, Jared.

NDSU AT A GLANCE

Alternately fl ooded by vast prehistoric seas and scraped fl at by immense glaciers, this region eventually became

America’s bread basket and the center of high-tech, 21st-century agribusiness. Less than 10,000 years ago, the area that is now Fargo-Moorhead was 200 feet below the surface of Lake Agassiz, a huge inland sea formed at the edge of the ice age. Over centu-ries the waters receded, leaving 6 feet of rich, black soil that today makes the Red River Val-ley one of the world’s most fer le farmlands, with Fargo and Moorhead at its center. The Red River of the North separates the two ci es and serves as the border between North Dakota and Minnesota. The city of Fargo was named for one of the owners of the Wells-Fargo Express Company, William G. Fargo. The city of Moorhead was named a er William G. Moorhead, an execu ve of the Northern Pacifi c Railway. In fact, the Northern Pacifi c Railway had a profound impact on both the economy and popula on of the area. Originally se led by Scandina-vian and European immigrants, Fargo and Moorhead be-came boom towns with the arrival of the NP in 1871. Under the Homestead Act, set-tlers were given 160 acres in exchange for living on the land and farming part of it for at least fi ve years. Suddenly, Fargo-Moorhead became a mecca for hopeful refugees from the over-crowded East. The railroad brought a constant stream of se lers seek-ing a new life on America’s newest fron er. NCAA COMPLIANCE

ARE YOU A REPRESENTATIVE OF NDSU’S ATHLETICS INTERESTS?

You are a representative of NDSU’s athletics interests, more commonly known as a “booster”, if you meet any of the following conditions: You have been or are a member of any organization that promotes NDSU’s athletics program (e.g., NDSU Foundation, Team Makers). You have made a financial contribution to the NDSU athletics department or its booster organization. You have ever assisted in the recruitment of prospects for NDSU. You have provided benefits (e.g. summer jobs or occasional family meals) to enrolled student-athletes. You have arranged for or provided employment for enrolled student-athletes, or assisted in providing any benefit to enrolled student-athletes or their families. You have ever, in any way, promoted the athletics program at NDSU.

NOTE: Please remember that once you become a booster, you retain that identity indefinitely.

WHO IS A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE?

A prospective student-athlete, commonly known as a “prospect,” is any individual who has started classes for the 9th grade. In addition, student-athletes enrolled in preparatory school or two-year colleges are considered prospects. Ultimately, a student remains a prospect until enrollment at a four-year collegiate institution. It is possible for a younger student-athlete to be a prospect so it is a good idea to treat all athletes as prospects until they enroll.

WHO CAN RECRUIT FOR NORTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY?

Only North Dakota State University coaches who successfully complete the annual NCAA Coaches Certificate Exam, which tests their knowledge of NCAA recruitment legislation, are permitted to be involved in the recruiting process. As a booster, you are specifically prohibited from: Making any recruiting contacts with prospects or their relatives. This includes telephone calls, letters, e-mails, and facsimiles, along with any face-to-face contact either on or off campus. Assisting NDSU coaches by picking up transcripts, films, or any other information pertaining to a prospect’s ability from the prospect’s educational

institution. Providing a benefit to high school, prep school or community college coaches.

NCAA RULES REGARDING THE INTERNET

The internet is considered similar to e-mail, telephone calls, or general correspondence. Therefore, it should not be used by boosters to contact prospects, their families, or their coaches. Participation in “chat rooms” with prospects is strictly prohibited.

NCAA RULES REGARDING BOOSTER INVOLVEMENT WITH PROSPECTS

You may not provide financial aid or benefit of any kind (e.g., clothing, special discounts, lodging, meals, transportation, tickets, loans of money) to prospects or their relatives. You may not contact a prospective student-athlete to congratulate him/her on signing a National Letter of Intent to attend NDSU. You may not provide transportation or arrange for payment of transportation costs for a prospect or his/her relatives or friends to visit campus. You may not earmark funds nor pay for specific prospects to attend an NDSU summer camp. You may not employ or arrange for employment of a prospect before the completion of his/her senior year. After graduation, a booster may employ a prospect as long as compensation is for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with experience and the going rate. You may not provide anything to a prospect or the prospect’s family or friends without prior approval from the Compliance Office.

NCAA RULES REGARDING BOOSTER INVOLVEMENT WITH ENROLLED STUDENT-ATHLETES

You may not pay for or arrange for payment of room, board, or any type of transportation at any time for currently enrolled student-athletes, their relatives, or their friends. You may not provide student-athletes with any sort of extra benefit, which refers to any special arrangement provided a student-athlete or his/her relatives or friends with the benefit unavailable to the general student population.

You may not provide student-athletes with any

special discounts, payment arrangements (e.g., cosigning a loan), credits on a purchase (e.g., airline ticket, clothing), or services (e.g., dry cleaning, transportation). You may not allow student-athletes to use your telephone or make free calls. You may not provide awards or gifts to student-athletes for any reason. This also prohibits honorariums for speaking engagements. All awards to student-athletes must meet all NCAA legislation and be approved by the Compliance Office. You may not entertain student-athletes or their families and friends. You may not even buy them a cup of coffee or a can of soda. The only exception to this is that you may, on an occasional basis, provide a student-athlete or team (not family members or friends) with a meal. The meal can be catered, but it must be in your home. You may not use the name or picture of a student-athlete to advertise a commercial product. You may not purchase complimentary admissions from a current student-athlete. You may not provide an honorarium to a student-athlete for speaking engagement.

NOTE: These rules apply throughout the student-athlete’s entire enrollment at NDSU.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Forward information about prospects to the appropriate NDSU coaching staff member. View a prospect’s athletics contest on your own initiative, provided you do not contact the prospect or his/her relatives, coach, principal, or counselor in an attempt to evaluate the academic or athletic abilities of the prospect. You are responsible for all incurred costs or fees at a contest. Speak to a prospect on the telephone ONLY if the prospect initiates the call. You are not permitted to have a recruiting conversation, but you may exhibit normal civility. Under such circumstances, you must refer questions about the athletics program to the athletics department staff. Employ a prospect or student-athlete, provided permission has been granted by the athletics department. The student-athlete will ask you to provide employment information to the athletics department prior to employment.

North Dakota State University’s athletics program is rich in tradition. Its storied history includes national, regional, and conference championships and champions. On top of these athletic achievements are numerous

academic championships earned by our student-athletes. As we strive to continue the championship tradition of Bison Athletics, we must always seek the highest of ethical conduct. North Dakota State University is unconditionally committed to NCAA rules and regulations. As an NCAA member institution, we must be responsible for ensuring that everyone abides by those rules. There is no margin for unethical behavior.

With your assistance and cooperation, we believe we can continue to represent the university with integrity, the highest of ethical standards, and the belief in doing what is right. Whether you are an alum, donor, booster, or friend of Bison Athletics, the university is grateful for your support. Together we can accomplish the common goal of ensuring a positive experience for all student-athletes. NDSU is subject to penalties for all violations committed by any alum, donor, booster or friend.

Please contact the NDSU Compliance Office at (701) 231-5696 if you need a specific NCAA rule interpretation.
