Head coach Jason Valek is entering his sixth season coaching New-berry and his fifth

at the Division II level. He was hired in the summer of 2004 to be the first wrestling coach in Newberry history. In his four years at the helm Newberry has gone 73-30-1, in-cluding a record of 61-18-1 against non Di-vision I competition. Valek has coached 33 NWCA and Division II National Qualifiers, 11 NCAA D-II All-Americans, two Division II National Champions, two USAW Greco All-Americans, an NWCA National Cham-pion and three NWCA All-Americans. In just five Valek has raised the Newberry wrestling program into one of the top handful of teams in the nation. The 2008-2009 season established New-berry as a Division II wrestling powerhouse. Newberry acheived the highest ranking in school history with its second place spot on January 9, 2009. The team took its second straight Super Region I title, as three won in-dividual titles. The scarlet and gray then made school history when eight wrestlers quali-fied for the national tournament, two won national championships and the team finished as national runner-up. The season included more than just the national tournament’s accomplishments as Newberry finished the year with a 23-2 dual record, which is the best in program history. Coach Jason Valek’s squad brought home Newberry’s first national champions in any sport when Keeno Griffin (197) and Cy Wainwright (285) won national titles at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Griffin and Wainwright were two of eight that traveled to the national championships, as they were joined by Matt Oliver (125), Andrew Young (133), Latra Collick (149), Brandon Kelly (165), Josh Whitelock (174) and Bryant Blanton (184). All eight placed at the Super Region I Tournament, in addition to Tony Washington (141) who claimed six place at the tournament, and Sean Byrnes

(157), who also wrestled at the tourna-ment. Griffin, Wainwright and Oliver won Super Region I titles. Young finished third, Collick finished runner-up, Kelly finished third, Whitelock finished fourth and Blan-ton finished fourth as well. At the national championships, the

scarlet and gray excelled as six wrestlers earned All-American honors. Matt Oliver (125) finished third, Andrew Young (133) took sixth, Brandon Kelly (165) finished eighth and Bryant Blanton (184) finished fourth to join Griffin and Wainwright as All-Americans. Newberry rolled through much of its schedule in 2008-2009, going 4-0 in the East Coast Duals, 4-0 at the Newberry Duals, In the 2007–2008 season, Newberry wrestling continued its ascent upwards into the nation’s elite. Newberry garnered a school best national ranking of 6th dur-ing the regular season and culminated the season with a 8th place national finish. The scarlet and gray qualified eight wrestlers for the national tournament and had nine place winners at the NCAA East Region Qualifying Tournament. With the nine placers, New-berry took home the first ever Region Title for the school and broke the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown 19 year stranglehold on the title. Newberry had two individual Region Champions in Kelly Anundson (197) and Cy Wainwright (285), four region runner-up finishes in Matt Oliver (125), Andrew Young (133), Tony Washington (141) and Latra Col-lick (149). Bryant Blanton (174) and Keeno Griffin (184) each placed 3rd in there re-spective weight classes and Alonso Azumendi finished 5th at 165 pounds. The NCAA Di-vision II National Tournament was held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Newberry wrestlers captured four All-American Honors with Cy Wainwright placing third, Andrew Young, Kelly Anundson and Keeno Griffin each plac-ing seventh. Bryant Blanton, Tony Washington and Latra Collick each lost out in the All-American round and finished in the top 12 in the nation and freshmen Matt Oliver finished in the top 16 with his performance. Along with an eighth place showing at Na-tionals, Newberry held a 16-3 mark against non-Division I competition defeating six Top 12 programs along the way. Newberry won the East Coast Duals Tournament along with the 2008 Virginia Duals Tournament setting a

tournament record in going un-scored and defeating their opponents by a combined score of 139–0. Newberry also finished sec-ond in the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, Ind. with seven grapplers taking home place-ment honors. The team also was recognized by the Takedown Report of the Carolinas as the Top Team regardless of Division beating out the likes of NC State, UNC, Appalachian State and UNC Greensboro. Each starter on the Newberry Wrestling Team was named to the Carolinas Top 7 Team in their respective weight classes. The awards didn’t end there as Valek was selected as the 2007-2008 East Region Coach of the Year and 2007-2008 National Coach of the year finalist (Top 5). Since his arrival to Newberry in 2003, Valek has devoted his energy to form the Newberry County Parks and Recreation Commission youth wrestling league as well as heading the coaching of the Chapin Recre-ation Commissions Youth League. He is also an active member of the National Wrestling Coaches Association and The South Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association. Prior to Valek arriving at Newberry Col-lege, he served as head coach for Newberry High. Valek was voted the Region III-AAA Coach of the Year and received Honorable Mention for South Carolina Wrestling Coach of the Year. Under his tutelage, the program at Newberry HS jumped from one win the year before Valek’s arrival to an 11-8 season in 2003-04 and 13-5 in 2004-2005. His teams finished 4th and 5th respectively in the state. Under his supervision Newberry High had two individual state champions, two runner-up finishers, three state placers and a total of seven qualifiers. Prior to his time at Newberry High, Valek served as an assistant coach at two Co-lumbia-area schools, A.C. Flora High School and Irmo High School. From 2000-2002, he worked as a volunteer assistant with national qualifiers in the state to prepare them for the high school national tournament in Cleveland, Ohio. During that span, Valek worked with nine state champions, five state runner-ups, and three third place finishers. Valek is a 1998 graduate of Clemson Uni-versity with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. He resides in Newberry.

NEWBERRY NOTES (cont.)the team to win its second straight Super Region I title. Griffin will be joined by returning All-Americans Matt Oliver (125), Bryant Blanton (174) as well as national qualifiers Josh Whitelock (174) and Latra Collick (157). The team will also welcome several transfers into the fold. Among them, NCAA Division II runner-up Mike Rogers will wrestle at the 149 lbs. weight class and 2006 NAIA National Champion Curtis Chenoweth will wrestle at 174 lbs.

When Divisions Collide- Newberry will meet Division I teams in five duals this year and compete in three tournaments that feature Division I teams. In addition to the Hokie Open, Newberry wrestled at the UNC Pembroke Wrestling Classic and NC State’s Wolfpack Open on November 21. The team faced Campbell and then-No. 23 Virginia Tech on November 27 as well as No. 15 Kent State and Michigan on December 13. The squad also faces Gardner-Webb on February 15. Last year, Newberry went 3-1 against D-I opponents, knocking off Davidson, No. 22 NC State and North Carolina.

Eye-to-Eye with DPI- Newberry has faced three teams listed in this week’s Duals Percentage Index on WrestlingReport.com. The index lists Division I teams and compares wrestlers’ rankings through the top 33 in each weight class as listed by WrestlingReport.com, then pits those teams against each other in a dual-style format, using the rankings for a point system. Each team’s DPI is then calculated by dividing the number of wins by (wins + losses). So far, New-berry has faced wrestlers from top schools like Virginia Tech and Virginia. Newberry faced No. 19 Virginia Tech on November 27, falling 27-9. The team also squared off against No. 20 Kent State and No. 41 Michigan on Dec. 15, dropping both contests. Newberry wrestlers have also faced several wrestlers from No. 45 North Carolina.
