3-Time All-AmericanJosh Glenn, ’08, became American wrestling’s first national champion and American University’s first national champion in more than 40 years with a heart-stopping 6-4 overtime win over Kurt Backes of Iowa State for the 197 lbs. title in 2007. Glenn finished his career at American as a three-time All-American, three-time EIWA Champion, a 2007 Midlands Champion and ranked second in school history for wins with a career-record of 110-14.

National SuccessAmerican has gained notoriety as one of the elite wrestling programs in the country over the last several years with strong showings on the nation’s biggest stages. The Eagles have placed in the top-30 at the NCAA Championships in five consecutive years, including a 14th place finish in 2010. American placed eighth at the Midlands Championships in both 2008 and 2009, marking the program’s highest-ever finish at the prestigious event, and has placed in the top-15 for seven straight years.

11 NCAA All-AmericansUnder Head Coach Mark Cody, American has sent 23 qualifiers to the NCAA Championships and 11 have come back as All-Americans. The Eagles have crowned three All-Americans in four of the last five years including last season when Mike Cannon, ’10, earned his third All-America honor, Kyle Borshoff, ’10, his second, and Steve Fittery his first. Josh Glenn graduated in 2008 as a three-time All-American and was preceeded by Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov, ’06, and Daniel Waters, ’05, on the podium.

Champions of the ClassroomThe American University wrestling team earned the highest combined GPA in Div. I wrestling in both 2007-08 and 2008-09, and last season posted the second highest GPA in the country with a 3.30. The Eagles are the only team to earn NWCA All-Academic Team honors and finish in the top-30 at the NCAA Championships each of the last five years.

WIN. LEARN. LEAD.American University student-athletes excel both in the classroom and on the mat, living up to the Athletics Department motto of “WIN. LEARN. LEAD.” The Eagles are the only team over the last five years to place in the top-30 at the NCAA Championships and earn NWCA All-Academic Team honors. American has also celebrated one national champion, 11 All-Americans and 14 Academic All-Americans over the last eight years under Head Coach Mark Cody.

The Marilyn Meltzer Wrestling Room

The Marilyn Meltzer Wrestling Room was dedicated in 1998 when the Jacobs Fitness Center opened. Named after the mother of former AU wrestler Alan Meltzer, the room is home to the American University wrestling squad and houses the offices of Head Coach Mark Cody and assistant Mike Rogers.

Washington, D.C.The National Mall is usually the center of every visitor’s trip to Washington DC. This tree-lined area of parkland stretches two and a half miles from the Potomac River to the United States Capitol on Capitol Hill and is adjoined by the White House. At one end of the National Mall, known as West Potomac Park, the Lincoln Memorial faces the Reflecting Pool with a good view of Arlington Memorial Bridge, Constitution Gardens, the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument. Further towards Capitol Hill are a number of museums and galleries, among which are many of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, including the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, and the Smithsonian Institution building.

Situated within the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., American University’s traditional-style campus has much to offer students in the way of comfort, modern conveniences, and quick, easy access to city life.

Our 84-acre, tree-lined campus, which was designated as a National Arboretum, is located at the top of Embassy Row in one of the most attractive, safe, and residential areas of our nation’s capital.

The center of campus, also referred to as “the quad,” is a focal point of student life not only because our academic buildings line its grassy borders, but also because it’s a place to meet-and-greet with friends and student groups, catch an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee or take part in an after-class debrief with professors.

Another favorite spot on campus is the beach volleyball pit located between the athletics fields. The adjacent grassy hillside is also a well known hangout for students on game days.

AcademicSupport

The academic support program for student-athletes, a collaboration between the Academic Support Center and the Department of Athletics, assists student-athletes in successfully attaining academic goals and creating a balance between academics and athletics. The program serves to promote responsibility and initiative while encouraging student-athletes to take advantage of the rich resources offered at American University.

Academic counselors work with student-athletes on skills needed for success in the classroom, and provide information about educational options, university and NCAA requirements, as well as policies and procedures. The program focuses on the development of the total person through individual meetings, study hall and tutoring, and life skills workshops. AU’s academic support program coordinates with faculty, advisors, and coaches to support each student-athlete.

2009-10 AcademicHighlights

3.37: Combined student-athlete GPA in the spring 2010 semester, matching the highest single-semester GPA in department history.

186: Student-athletes named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

159: Student-athletes made Dean’s List in either the fall or spring semester.

23: Student-athletes earned a 4.0 grade point average in either the fall or spring semesters.

Team Achievements:• The field hockey team finished third in the NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award standings with a 3.50 GPA during the fall 2009 semester. This honor marked the fifth time in seven years that the Eagles have finished in the top-five academically.

• The men’s swimming and diving team attained the highest GPA in Division I in the spring of 2010 with a 3.47 mark. This marked the third consecutive semester that American led the nation in GPA.

• The wrestling team’s GPA of 3.296 placed it second among all Division I wrestling programs, marking the third consecutive year American has finished in the top two.

In TheSpotlight

American University is located in the center of one of the largest media markets in the country, Washington, D.C. From television to radio, AU student-athletes gain exposure on both a local and national level.

Each of the four major television networks (ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox) has an affiliate in D.C. and can often be found on campus. Regional cable networks Comcast SportsNet and MASN also cover the Eagles throughout the year.

National newspapers The Washington Post and Washington Times serve as AU’s hometown papers. USA Today is also headquartered just miles away from campus.

Dr. Neil kerwinPresident,American university

Cornelius Kerwin was named president in the 2007-08 academic year after serving as acting and interim president since August 24, 2005. Dr. Kerwin is a longstanding member of the AU community. He earned a BA from American University in 1971 (followed by an MA in political science from the University of Rhode Island in 1973, and a PhD in political science from Johns Hopkins University in 1978) and has been a member of the AU faculty since 1975. He held a number of prominent leadership positions within the School of Public Affairs, including serving as dean from 1989 to 1997, acting provost from 1997 to 1998, and provost from 1998 to 2005.

A longtime supporter of AU athletics, Dr. Kerwin endorsed AU’s decision to move to the Patriot League in 2001, joining Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Army, and Navy in athletic competition that has resulted in 30 Patriot League championships (field hockey, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and men’s basketball). Since fall 2005, the Department of Athletics and Recreation has reported directly to Dr. Kerwin, a move that reflects the strong relationship between academic and athletic achievement at AU.

As provost, Dr. Kerwin was the university’s chief academic officer, leading approximately 475 full-time teaching faculty in AU’s six schools and colleges (College of Arts and Sciences, Kogod School of Business, School of Communication, School of International Service, School of Public Affairs, and Washington College of Law). Among the offices he supervised are: admissions, financial aid, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, the University Library, the Office of the Registrar, and

the Washington Semester Program and those reporting to the Dean of Academic Affairs (including the General Education and Honors Programs). His accomplishments as provost include: working with deans and faculty to complete AU’s master’s and doctoral program reviews; overseeing creation of the University College Program for first-year undergraduate students; leading the process to restructure faculty governance and create a new Faculty Senate; and overseeing AU’s decennial self-study that resulted in the Middle States Association Commission’s unconditional reaccreditation. Dr. Kerwin also advanced major efforts to support faculty scholarship, teaching, service, and diversity; bring faculty salaries to the AAUP–Level 1 standard; and develop plans for assessing student learning.

A professor of public administration in the School of Public Affairs, Dr. Kerwin is a nationally recognized specialist in public policy, with emphasis on the regulatory process. He teaches courses in administrative process, policy implementation, and American government and is actively engaged in research. Dr. Kerwin founded and directs AU’s Center for the Study of Rulemaking. He is the author of Rulemaking: How Government Agencies Write Law and Make Policy

(3rd ed., 2003, Congressional Quarterly Press) and the coauthor of How

American University named Keith Gill its seventh Director of Athletics and Recreation on June 1, 2007.

As Director of Athletics, Gill oversees the operations of all American University intercollegiate and intramural athletic programs, including more than 250 student-athletes participating in 16 varsity sports, the majority of which compete in the Patriot League Conference.

In three years at American, Gill has helped to lead the athletics department to never before seen successes including back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Since his arrival Gill has also seen the volleyball team win a record eighth Patriot League Championship, the field hockey team win a record seventh straight Patriot League Championship and the women’s basketball team make three consecutive postseason appearances for the first time in program history. Individually, American has crowned 14 All-Americans over the past three seasons.

The Eagles have flourished in the classroom as well under Gill’s guidance as American’s 16 teams have

continued their streak of 20 consecutive semesters with a combined GPA over 3.0. During the 2009-10 academic year, 159 student-athletes were named to the university’s Dean’s List and the department recorded a record 3.37 combined GPA.

Prior to coming to American, Gill spent three years at the University of Oklahoma. He oversaw a major portion of OU athletics, including men’s basketball, women’s soccer and baseball, and the supervision of personnel, budgets, facilities, fundraising, student-athlete issues and the selection and evaluation of coaches for these sports. He worked with the AD and staff in overseeing the strategic and annual planning process for the department.

Gill was the director of membership services at the NCAA from 2000 to 2004. He developed and communicated policies related to Division I intercollegiate athletics, including governance, rules compliance, diversity, gender equity, academic integrity, student-athlete welfare, fiscal integrity, strategic planning, sportsmanship and legislation. He oversaw and ensured the effective operation of the athletics certification program, and managed a staff of 35 who provided education and guidance to Division I institutions conducting their periodic self-studies. Previously, Gill worked at the NCAA from 1995 to 1999 as a membership services representative.

At Vanderbilt from 1999 to 2000, Gill was an assistant athletic director and worked with the AD to implement the annual planning process to help 16 athletics teams achieve their academic and competitive goals. He worked with the National Commodore Club, major gifts, media relations and marketing and supported the Vanderbilt Board of Trustees by working with the athletics committee.

A 1994 graduate of Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in history and sociology, the Orlando, Fla., native was a four-year letterman in football. In 2006 he earned a masters degree from the University of Oklahoma.

Head Coach Mark Cody is the man behind the American University Wrestling team’s rise to national prominence. In just eight years of coaching, Cody has rebuilt a program that was on the brink of elimination from collegiate

athletics into a team producing both athletic and academic All-Americans, EIWA Champions, and the program’s first ever National Champion.

During the 2009-10 season, Cody led five Eagles to the NCAA Championships where a program-record three earned All-America status. Seniors Kyle Borshoff and Mike Cannon and junior Steve Fittery were the three All-America honorees and helped the Eagles tie for the seventh most honors at the NCAA Championships. American recorded 38.5 points at Nationals to finish 14th, also setting a program record. Since 2005, the Eagles have sent 11 student-athletes to the NCAA podium and rank second in the EIWA for the most All-America honors.

Also last season, Cody’s Eagles earned the second highest GPA in Division I wrestling with a combined 3.296 GPA while Cannon, Jasen Borshoff, and Fittery were named NWCA Academic All-Americans. American is the only team to earn NWCA All-Academic Team honors and finish in the top-30 at the NCAA Championships each of the last five years.

Cody’s Eagles earned their first NWCA Champions of the Classroom honor during the 2007-08 season. Jasen Borshoff, Cannon, Josh Glenn and Christopher Stout were each named NWCA Academic All-Americans, marking the most individual Academic All-America honors American had ever received in a single year. The Eagles also excelled on the mat, sending all four Academic All-American’s to the NCAA Championships where Cannon and Glenn both earned All-America status. Cannon became just the second underclassmen in American history to earn All-America status with a sixth-place finish at 165 lbs. and Glenn earned the distinction for the third straight year with a fifth-place showing at 197 lbs.

During the 2006-07 season, Cody’s team reached an unparalleled high as Glenn repeated as the EIWA Champion at 197 lbs. and swept through the NCAA Championships as the No. 2 seed. He went 5-0 and earned a 6-4 overtime decision over No. 1 Kurt Backes of Iowa to capture American’s first National Championship. He was joined by Cannon and K. Borshoff and sophomore Rudy Rueda at the tournament, marking American’s largest showing and tying its then-best finish of 17th. At the EIWA Tournament, the squad tied

to earn honors with his fourth-place finish at 184 lbs. The pair’s performances coupled with Adam LoPiccolo’s one win by fall earned the team a 17th-place finish. At the EIWA Championships, Abdurakhmanov was named Most Outstanding Wrestler as he and Glenn each won individual titles. In the classroom, Abdurakhmanov and Matt Morkel earned NWCA Academic All-America honors and the team earned the NWCA Team Academic All-America Award. In addition, the Eagles won 13 of their 19 dual matches and placed three wrestlers in the top-10 during the year.

In the 2004-05 season, American earned its first ever All-American award when senior Daniel Waters placed eighth at the NCAA Championships. Joining Waters at the NCAA Championships that year was a then school-record three teammates, including American first-ever EIWA champion, fourth-ranked Abdurakhmanov. The 2004 EIWA Freshman of the Year and runner-up at 184 lbs., Glenn, and heavyweight LoPiccolo also qualified for the big stage by way of their high placings at EIWAs. As a team the Eagles had their highest finish at EIWAs, placing sixth out of 13 teams.

A year earlier, Cody led a team which continued to show improvement. Waters recorded the most wins in Division I that year, with a 32-5 overall record. Senior Jared Hyman finished his season with 24 wins, winning 10 of 11 dual meet matches.

In his first year, Cody led American to the EIWA Tournament and was also a coach for the 2003 U.C. National Championship Gator Club team. That same year Cody introduced the highly successful Mark Cody Wrestling Camp, providing a series of individualized workouts for athletes of all ages and abilities.

Cody came to American after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State, a national powerhouse and owner of more NCAA Championships than any other school. Cody helped Oklahoma State to a Big 12 Championship and a fifth-place finish at the 2002 NCAA Championships, where they crowned an individual national champion and four All-

Americans. In addition, the squad earned recognition from the NWCA as a top-25 academic team, and two were named Academic All-America by the NWCA. Nine were also named to the Academic All-Big 12 team.

Before joining Oklahoma State, Cody served as the upper-weights coach for 12 years at the University of Nebraska. During his time in Lincoln, he was responsible for bringing in some of the nation’s best recruiting classes, including two National Champions, 1995 heavyweight champion Tolly Thompson and 2000 197 lbs. champion Brad Vering. Vering later became a two-time Olympian with Cody in his corner at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials when he qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. While at Nebraska, 23 Cornhuskers were named All-America.

Cody spent the 1986-87 season as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State. He was also an assistant at Bloomsburg University during the 1985-86 season and for the University of Missouri in 1984-85 where he helped develop Rulon Gardner, who later captured the heavyweight gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and trained with 2000 Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland.

As a student-athlete, Cody was a three-time All-American. He spent two years at the State University of New York at Delhi before transferring to Missouri in 1983. His greatest success came during his senior season, 1984-85, when he earned All-America status and was named the team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Cody still ranks in Missouri’s single season top-10 for falls (17) and winning percentage (.875). He graduated from Bellevue University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business.

A member of the New York Athletic Club, he was a 198 lbs. finalist at the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials.

A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Cody and his wife Holly now reside in the Washington, D.C., metro area, with their sons George, Charlie and Henry.

While at Campbell, Henson helped with the development of NCAA East Region Champion Parker Burns who became the Camels first NCAA Qualifier in seven seasons.

Henson was instrumental to the success of the American wrestling program during his first tenure at American, and helped guide the development of four All-Americans.

As a collegian, Henson qualified for the NCAA Championships four times while attending both the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Nebraska. A 2001 graduate of Penn, Henson was a two-time place-winner at the EIWA Championships. During the 2001

tournament, he took third place and in his senior campaign Henson narrowly missed capturing a championship when he took second to Jesse Jantzen of Harvard. For his performance and efforts during his senior year, Henson earned the Robert G. Allman Most Inspirational Award.

Henson began his collegiate career at Nebraska where he lettered twice and was also a two-time Nationals Qualifier. In his four year career, Henson amassed over 100 wins.

Henson also earned Academic All-America twice. He graduated from Pennsylvania in 2001 with a bachelor of arts in psychology.

Prior to joining American’s staff, Henson was a coach at New Oxford High School during the 2002-03 season.

Jarrod Elwell enters his second year as a member of Mark Cody’s coaching staff.

Prior to his time at American, Elwell was heavily involved with youth wrestling in the Maryland and Virginia area. He served as head coach and commissioner of the Outlaws Wrestling Club and as commissioner of the Capital Area Wrestling League. Elwell is also co-founder of the Maryland summer wrestling league.

Elwell wrestled at Binghamton University during his collegiate career, and was a high school All-American and multi-state champion for Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont.

He was also the chief executive of the nonprofit Hogares in Washington, D.C. from 2001-2009, where he focused on organizational development and capacity building.

Elwell received his Bachelor of Arts from Binghamton and a Master of Science from the University of Maryland.

Kyle Borshoff joins Mark Cody’s coaching staff after completing a stellar four-year wrestling career at American.

Borshoff was a two-time All-American as an Eagle, a two-time Midlands Placewinner and three-time NCAA Qualifier. He graduated with a career record of 102-39 and appears several times on American’s all-time top 10 lists. He currently ranks fifth in career wins, fourth in career falls, third in career technical falls and sixth in career major decisions.

In his last season with the Eagles Borshoff earned his second consecutive All-America honor by placing eighth at the NCAA Championships, becoming one of only three student-athletes in American history to earn multiple All-America honors. He finished the 2009-10 season with an overall record of 28-8 and a dual meet record of 16-0, and recorded four tech falls and four falls. Borshoff also placed fifth at the EIWA Championships and seventh at the Midlands Championships as a senior, and was ranked as high as third in the InterMat College Rankings.

Borshoff earned his first All-America honor in 2009, placing seventh at the NCAA Championships and recording a 33-7 overall record. He also finished third at the EIWA Championships and fourth at the Midlands Championships. Borshoff first qualified for the NCAA Championships as a freshman after a fourth-place showing at the EIWA Championships, making him the first true freshman in American history to qualify for Nationals.

The Eagles earned the second-highest GPA in Div. I wrestling with a combined 3.296 GPA while Jasen Borshoff, Mike Cannon, and Steve Fittery were each named NWCA Academic All-Americans. American is the only team to earn NWCA All-Academic Team honors and finish in the top-30 at the NCAA Championships each of the last five years.

The Eagles placed eighth at the 2009 Midlands Championships, matching the program’s best-ever finish at the tournament. Junior Steve Fittery won his first Midlands title and the third in program history, and was named the 2009 Champion of Champions. Fittery was joined on the podium by seniors Kyle Borshoff (7th) and Mike Cannon (2nd).

14th Place NCAA Finish3 NCAA All-Americans

American set a program record finishing 14th at the NCAA Championships and earning its fifth-consecutive top-30 finish at the tournament. Seniors Kyle Borshoff, Mike Cannon, and junior Steve Fittery earned All-America honors with eighth, third, and fifth place finishes, respectively. Senior Jordan Lipp and freshman Daniel Mitchell also qualified for Nationals, giving the Eagles a program record five NCAA Qualifiers.

Charles “Fritz” Maier was a four-year member of the American University wrestling team and one of the most skilled grapplers of his day.

In the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s, Maier consistently outmatched his opponents on the mat and became a four-time Mason Dixon champion. As a freshman, Maier won his first championship in the 157 lbs. weight class. In his sopohomore season Maier moved up to 167 lbs. where he proceeded to win three more titles. Maier was also a key member of the 1959-60 squad which went 8-0 in dual meets and p roduced American’s only Mason Dixon Team Champion-ship.

Vidvuds “Vince” Celtnieks graduated from American University in 1965 as one of the most well rounded athletes to have ever graced the AU playing surfaces.

In his four years as an Eagle, Celtnieks earned varsity letters in wrestling, cross country, track and soccer. As a wrestler Celtnieks was coached by both Frank Morgan, who guided American to the Mason Dixon Team Championshipin 1960, and Isidore Abrams. On the soccer pitch, Celtnieks was a member of the 1964 team which snapped a streak of four consecutive years with a loosing record. As a cross country and track athlete Celtnieks was a teammate to future NCAA Champions Peter Chen and Andrew “Butch” Bell.

Dr. Robert Karch headed American University’s wrestling program for 10 seasons, between 1968 and 1979. In his first season as coach, he led a team that had won just one dual match in the previous four seasons to four dual match wins. In the decade which Karch served as the program’s mentor, he amassed more than 70 dual match wins and coached 17 con-ference place-winners, a conference champion and several first-place or second-place finishes at invitational tournaments. No slouch on the mat himself, Karch won three Atlantic Coast Conference Championships while wrestling for the University of Maryland.

In 1979, Karch stepped down as the wrestling coach to develop AU’s Mas-ter of Science program in Health and Fitness Management, which he con-tinues to di-rect. He has served the Athletics De-partment for the last sev-eral years as the Faculty Athletic rep-resentative.
