Bach. This afternoon's talented finalists take to the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage and compete for a $4000 cash prize supported by Dr Richard Mills AM and Martine Letts, two encouragement awards each valued at $2000 donated by Vivienne Ritchie, and the Young Bach Scholar Encouragement Award valued at $1000, supported by Maria Johnson in memory of the Late Harry Johnson. ABOUT THE FINALISTSSophie Bahana is a Year 12 student at Caulfield Grammar Wheelers Hill Campus. She attained LMusA piano in 2015 and AMusA violin in 2018. Sophie received the Saddie Brown Memorial Award at the Ringwood Eisteddfod Grand Final. Sophie is a Music Co-Captain, and is a member of the Wheelers Hill Orchestra, Chamber String, Grainger Piano Trio, and Cadences and Tonality Choirs.

Leon Fei currently studies violin with Mark Mogilevski. He has won numerous first prizes and scholarships at international and local music competitions. Leon has performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, Hamer Hall, Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Melbourne Recital Centre, and on ABC TV and 3MBS Fine Music. He received his AMusA and LMusA with distinction.

Jackie Wong is currently studying at The University of Melbourne. She has won numerous prizes locally and internationally as a pianist. After receiving the 2015 Paul McDermott Scholarship, Jackie was invited to perform at the Sounds Great Conference at Arts Centre Melbourne. In the same year, she was a soloist with Melbourne Musicians Chamber Orchestra. Jackie holds a Licentiate Diploma in pianoforte.

Ji Woo Yoon is a Year 11 cellist at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, studying under Josephine Vains. She obtained her LMusA with distinction in 2017. She won 2nd prize in the Hephzibah Menuhin Competition, 1st in the 2018 Open Ringwood Eisteddfod and has frequently been a competition finalist. She has also performed on 3MBS 'The Talent'.

Dindin Jingyi Wang has been a student of Fintan Murphy since 2014. Dindin won the 2016 Australian Bach Society award and the 2017 and 2018 Encouragement awards at Melbourne Recital Centre's Bach Competition. Dindin won the 2018 Kendall National Violin Competition and the 2018 Hephzibah Menuhin Memorial Award. In October 2018, Dindin won 1st prize in 3MBS 'The Talent' series two.

Zhihan Jiang (FTCL, LMusA and AMusA in piano and AMusA in violin) has been studying piano with Dr Mark McGee since 2014. Zhihan is a recipient of the Hephzibah Menuhin Memorial Award, has won first prize in the Scotch Piano Competition, and was a prize winner in Melbourne Recital Centre's 2018 Bach Competition. Zhihan is the concertmaster of SKC Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Strings.

Meng Xia is a Year 10 student at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, currently studying piano with Glenn Riddle. Meng has lots of competing and performing experience and has won many awards in eisteddfods throughout Victoria. This November, Meng makes his concerto debut with the Maroondah Symphony Orchestra. Meng also enjoys playing in an ensemble and singing in his school choir.

Leanne McGowan studies violin with Dr Robin Wilson at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). Leanne has performed as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Youth Orchestra (QYS) and the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra. She was the concertmaster of QYS in 2018. Leanne has been a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra (AYO) for several years.

Marcus Michelsen won the Australian Bach Society award in Melbourne Recital Centre’s 2018 Bach Competition. He is the concertmaster of the Sydney Youth Orchestra, the youngest person to hold this position. Marcus has participated in the Aspen Music Festival and School, U.S.A., since age nine. Marcus also performs with Australian Youth Orchestra.

Sarah Chen is a Year 10 student. She has been learning piano since age eight. She was awarded her LMusA in piano in 2017 and also plays violin. She plays first violin in a range of ensembles at school, is a recipient of the Henshall Musicianship Award, and has performed in Melbourne Youth Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Chamber Strings and Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra.
