Former NCAA All-American and national champion Katie Schumacher-Cawley was named the head coach of the University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball program Dec. 5, 2008.

Schumacher-Cawley takes over the reins at UIC after spending the previous six seasons as an as-sistant coach for the Flames, including the last five as the top assistant coach.

A 2002 graduate of Penn State, Schumacher-Cawley helped lead the Nittany Lions to the 1999 NCAA Division I Women’s Volley-ball Championship and three Big Ten Conference titles during her career at University Park.

Schumacher-Cawley was a three-time All-Big Ten selection, two-time All-American and an AVCA All-Region selection in 2001. Schumacher tallied 1,310 kills (tenth in Penn State history), 299 blocks (eighth in Penn State history) and 772 digs.

A native of Chicago’s South Side, Schumacher-Cawley first tasted the collegiate coaching life in 2002 when she served as a volunteer coach for the University of Illinois. She had spent her entire collegiate career at Penn State serving as a coach for the Nittany Lions’ summer camps in both volleyball and basketball.

She first broke onto the local sports scene as a prep star for volleyball power Mother McAuley. From 1993-97 she excelled at volleyball and basketball, earning All-Girls Catho-lic Athletic Conference (GCAC) honors in both sports and leading the Mighty Macs to state and national titles in volleyball. Schumacher-Cawley was named the 1996 Player of the Year by The Star Newspaper and the 1997 Chicago Sun-Times Female Athlete of the Year, among many awards and highlights, before heading to Penn State.

She was also inducted into the GCAC Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Catholic League Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2008, a resolution in the Illinois House of Representatives congratu-lated Schumacher-Cawley for her achievements.

On October 15, 2008, Schumacher-Cawley was inducted into the prestigious Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame for her contribu-tions to the sport of volleyball as an athlete and a coach. She was inducted in a class that featured the likes of Pro Football Hall of Famers Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers and Marv Levy, Chicago Cubs great Andre Dawson and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

Schumacher-Cawley was married on May 26, 2007 to Mike Cawley of Pittsburgh. The couple resides in Chicago.

2009 SEASON OUTLOOKThe UIC volleyball program opened a new chapter in its history in December, with a familiar author. Katie Schumacher-Cawley

took over the program after spending the last six seasons as an assistant coach at UIC.

Schumacher-Cawley comes into her first season at the head of the Flames’ program with the goal to be constantly improving.

“Our goals are taking practice one day at a time and getting better with every contact,” Schumacher-Cawley said. “We need to be

prepared every time we step on the floor and compete at the highest level.”

On the sidelines with Schumacher-Cawley will be Sara Hughes, Ellen Hayes and Dan Buehring. Hughes, who played collegiately

at Horizon League member Valparaiso, returns for her second year as an assistant coach on the UIC volleyball staff, while Hayes

is a new addition. Hayes comes to the Flames after two years as an assistant at Marshall, but played in college just across town

at DePaul. Buehring will serve as a volunteer assistant and was a two-time NAIA national title winner at California Baptist.

“I am looking forward to starting the season,” Schumacher-Cawley said. “I feel that we have a great staff that is willing to do

whatever it takes to make a difference here.”

Ten returnees and four newcomers will make up the roster for the first year of Schumacher-Cawley’s tenure. Seniors Lana Lob-

dell and Emily Schaffer will provide leadership for the UIC squad, while five juniors help anchor the upperclassman portion of the

team. A trio of sophomores and four freshmen round out the 2009 Flames roster.

“We have two seniors who will be looked to for leadership on and off the floor,” Schumacher-Cawley said. “Every player will have

the opportunity to compete in their position. I am excited to see who will rise to the challenge.”

SETTERSReturning: Junior Jess Dalke (5.75 aps, 30 sa), Junior Dana Van Syckle (5.93 aps, 27 sa)

Both Dalke and Van Syckle saw significant time on the court in 2008, with Dalke leading the team with 607 assists and Van Syckle not far behind with 575. Van Syckle started 14 matches for the 2008 Flames, while Dalke started the remaining 18. Both setters managed to play in almost every match, however.

Van Syckle bounced back from a mid-season knee surgery her freshman year with her strong sophomore campaign, while Dalke made her impact in her first year in a Flames uniform after transferring from Mississippi. In addition to their setting prow-ess, the pair are also two of UIC’s most prolific servers, with Dalke recording 30 aces in 2008 to Van Syckle’s 27. Dalke’s total last season was good for second on the roster, with Van Syckle taking third.

MIDDLE BLOCKERSReturning: Senior Lana Lobdell (0.77 bps, 88 tb), Junior Epiphany Davis(0.92 bps, 98 tb),

Sophomore Chelsea Sloan (0.76 bps, 17 sp)Newcomer: Freshmen Nicole Allgood

The duo of Lobdell and Davis accounted for just more than 85 percent of the Flames’ 217.5 total blocks last year, chipping in for 88 and 98, respectively. Both totals were good for top ten in the Horizon League a year ago.

Sloan saw limited action, appearing in 17 sets during the course of the season. In those 17 sets, however, Sloan posted a block per set average of 0.76. That number set her third on the squad, just behind Davis’ 0.92 and Lobdell’s 0.77.

Allgood comes to the program as a transfer from the University of Louisville. A highly-decorated prep player who led her South Oldham, Ky. high school team to four state tournament appearances, Allgood will retain four years of eligibility, as she redshirted at Louisville last season.

OUTSIDE HITTERSReturning: Junior Casie Sullivan (2.74 kps, 853 ta), Sophomore Janise Dismuke (1 ta, 2 mp) Newcomers: Freshmen Aubrey Sniegowski, Freshmen Kelsey Safranek

Sullivan returns for her junior campaign after posting the second-highest kill total on the UIC squad a year ago. As a sophomore, Sullivan posted 296 kills with 853 attempts. Her kills per set average was 2.74, with the second-year Flame starting 29 of UIC’s 32 matches.

Dismuke, a sophomore who saw the floor in just two matches as a rookie last season, and newcomers Sniegowski and Safranek will also be looking to get in the mix. Snie-

gowski comes to the Flames from Lemont Township, where she led her prep squad to a pair of IHSA regional titles. Safranek led her Downers Grove South team to three conference titles and was a three-time all-conference selection.

DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTSReturning: Senior Emily Schaffer (2.06 dps, 0.10 saps), Junior Taylor Szatkowski (2.81 dps, 0.19 saps), Sophomore Kate Eldred (0.67 dps, 0.00 saps)Newcomer: Freshmen Jacqueline Lang

Schaffer and Szatkowski handled the bulk of the libero duties a year ago, with both defensive specialists seeing the court in 23 matches last season. Szatkowski posted a digs per set average of 2.81 on the year with 219 digs, while Schaffer’s dps was 2.06

with 140 digs.

Eldred will move from the outside hitter/right side position on the court to help out with libero duties in her sophomore season. As a sophomore, Eldred came off the bench in five matches.

Lang is a local product, coming to UIC from Marist High School, where she helped the Redhawks to a pair of regional titles. She was a two-time all-East Suburban Catholic Con-ference selection, and was named second team All-Area in both the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune her senior season.

SCHEDULEOn tap in 2009 for the Flames is a schedule that features a flurry of tournaments to open the year, followed by a tough double-run though the Horizon League.

UIC opens its season at the Northern Illinois Invitational Aug. 28, with matches slated against Stephen F. Austin, Western Illinois, Southern Illinois and the host Huskies. The

Flames will then head to Bloomington, Ind., for the IU adidas Classic, hosted by Indiana University. While at IU, UIC will face off against Tennessee-Martin, Kentucky, Murray State and the home-court Hoosiers. Both Kentucky and Indiana floated just outside the AVCA Top 25 rankings a season ago.

The Flames close out their tournament schedule with the UIC Invitational at the Flames Athletic Center Sept. 11-12. The FAC will play host to Duquesne, Georgia State and Michigan State for the event, with UIC playing all three schools during the tourna-ment’s two days.

“Our non-conference tournaments will be an excellent test in preparing us for the Horizon League,” Schumacher-Cawley said. “We accomplished a lot during the spring season, and we are excited about raising the bar of excellence this upcoming season. This team is hungry to compete and eager to prove what they can do.”

Other non-conference tilts on the schedule include single matches against Chicago State, Western Michigan, Robert Morris, DePaul and Western Illinois.

UIC will also meet up with each of the eight Horizon League schools twice in 2009, leading up to the 2009 Horizon League Vol-leyball Championships Nov. 19-22.

Coming into its 31st season in 2009-10, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models.

The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Cur-rent membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso Uni-versity, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University.

The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms of athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-ath-lete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth.

The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). In all sports, all teams participate in their respective postseason League championships regardless of regular-season perfor-mance, allowing all student-athletes an opportunity to qualify for NCAA championships. The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball.

The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field and the NCAA national office.

A PROUD HISTORYFounded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Confer-ence with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history, with Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions. ATHLETIC SUCCESSIn the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprec-edented success on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (Butler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and nine wins in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Champion-ship in the past seven seasons. In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Champi-onships each of the last seven seasons in men’s soccer (Mil-waukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s

soccer three of the last four seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Green Bay’s women’s basketball team added to that résumé with a victory in the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and then finished fourth at the 2005 NCAA Cross Country Championships. ACADEMIC SUCCESSHorizon League student-athletes also excel in the classroom as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the fall 2007 and spring 2008 semesters. Forty-eight student-ath-letes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2007-08, while 14 earned Academic All-America honors, including a pair of first-team selections.

COMMUNITY SERVICEIn addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day. The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in India-napolis during its annual summer meeting, while the League, it schools and fans donate to Komen for the Cure for breast cancer awareness during its annual women’s basketball cham-pionship. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more. SPORTSMANSHIPOne of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is fostering collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, officials, and campus and League administrators. Its purpose is to make all the involved groups aware of the Horizon League expectations of behavior during conference events. DEMOGRAPHICSHorizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than ten million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience.

LEADERSHIPJonathan B. (Jon) LeCrone is in his 18th year as Commissioner of the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the ninth-longest tenured commissioner among the 33 Division I conferences. He is the fifth commis-sioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEd-wardo (1989-92), James W. Shaffer (1984-89), Cecil N. Cole-man (1980-84) and James J. McCafferty (1979-80). LeCrone is in the second year of a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Leadership Council after recently completing a five-year term on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. McCAFFERTY TROPHYThe Horizon League annually awards the McCafferty Trophy in recognition of its all-sports champion in honor of its first commissioner, James J. McCafferty. Milwaukee won the McCafferty Trophy following the 2008-09 academic year. UIC captured the Men’s All-Sports Award, while Milwaukee claimed the women’s honor for the fourth straight year and eighth time in the past nine years. As an indication of the League’s competitive balance, eight of its ten schools won at least one team championship last year.

A GREAT UNIVERSITY IN A GREAT CITY

In the midst of the nation’s third-largest city, you will find a bustling university that truly reflects the area which surrounds it. Located just one mile west of the downtown area, the University of Illinois at Chicago is the largest university in the city with an enrollment of 25,000 students and annual research expenditures of over $290 million. Formed in 1982 through the consolidation of the UIC Medical Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, UIC features a 240-acre campus with over 100 buildings, hous-ing 15 colleges which offer 74 bachelor’s, 77 master’s and 60 doctoral degree programs. UIC CAMPUS HOUSING - IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALLWith 10 residence halls scattered throughout the entire UIC campus community, campus housing is a university entity on the rise.

Housing nearly 4,000 students, the residences available are situated on some of the finest real estate in Chicago.

Minutes from downtown, Lake Michigan and the museum campus, the dormitories at UIC are a refreshing concept from the traditional high-rise facilities developed at many institutions.

James J. Stukel Towers is the latest crown jewel in campus housing and opened its doors in the Fall of 2007.

The Towers provide four towers of different heights to accommodate 740 undergraduate students. Each floor in the building has 30 resi-dents, living in four-, five-, and eight-person suites consisting of single rooms, double rooms, bathrooms & living rooms. Half of the students living in the Towers will have single rooms.

The strong community development residence life model is intended to provide coordination and support for a number of academic-related programs and living areas, with each two-floor community having a two-story common-area lounge and adjacent study lounge, and each of the Towers offering a penthouse lounge/piano room.

The building also provides a full-service dining hall for residents, a snack bar/convenience store, student kitchens in common areas, computer labs, meeting & seminar rooms, student organization of-fices, and a 150-seat auditorium for special events.

Stukel Towers is just one of many new residence facilities to open on the UIC campus in the last five years. A component of the university’s south campus expansion, Marie Robinson and Thomas Beckham Halls opened in 2003. The units house more than 750 students who inhabit spacious, apartment-style dorms, equipped with kitchens and private bathrooms.

Across the east campus at the corner of Harrison and Halsted Streets is the Courtyard Residence Hall, along with Commons West, North and South. Built in 1988, these four halls house nearly 1,300 students. The Courtyard houses students in clusters, typically three doubles and two single rooms sharing a common bathroom, while the remainder of the halls offer a variety of living options.

Every hall has a variety of lounges, meeting rooms, laundry facilities and spots for social and recreational activities. The convenient link to the campus unions allows for easy access to dining halls, bookstores and more.

STUDENT-ATHLETE SUCCESSUIC STUDENTS AND FACULTY AS ONE

UIC students and faculty work together with a low student-to-teacher ration, allowing for more opportunity for interaction between profes-sors and students, building early relationships that foster academic success.

The university continues to attract top national scholars to its strong faculty. UIC’s faculty have been recognized with many prestigious awards, including the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship, Fulbright Distinguished Professorship, Guggenheim Foundation grant, National Science Foundation’s CAREER grant, Jonas Salk Lifetime Achievement Award, Society of Women Engineers’ Achievement Award and the United States Capitol Historical Society’s Freedom Award.

UIC students win major national competitive awards, including a Rhodes Scholarship, Gates-Cambridge Scholarships, Goldwater Schol-arships, Fulbright Fellowships and Harry S. Truman Scholarships, among others.

UIC is a member of three Regional Centers for Excellence designated in September 2003 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as part of the federal government’s response to 9/11. The RCEs research new diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines for

potential bioterrorist agents and emerging infectious diseases.

UIC is home to the world’s most powerful magnet for imaging the human body. The 9.4-Tesla magnet – which has a mag-netic field approximately 100,000 times stronger than Earth’s – is used in a human scanning machine to study individual molecules as they support life.

Two faculty members in the College of Architecture and the Arts have won MacAr-thur Fellowships, also known as “genius grants”.

UIC’s Electronic Visualization Laboratory has created a virtual reality tool called PARIS – the Personal Augmented Reality Immersive System – that allows collaborat-ing researchers anywhere to jointly move and fell a virtual object in real time.

PORT ACADEMIC CENTER SERVICES

Individual StudyThe spacious and comfortable main study area is monitored from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday though Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Students can focus on their schoolwork without distractions of home or dorm life. Computers are available for student-athletes to use in the main study area.

TutoringTutoring is available to student-athletes in nearly every subject area. The Athletic Department has an exceptionally qualified staff of tutors. Sessions are scheduled during convenient hours for the student and the tutor, and are held in the Cen-ter’s small study rooms.

Study GroupsStudent-athletes who wish to study together can reserve the small study rooms by checking with the receptionist outside the main study area.

AdvisingEach student-athlete is required to meet with an academic ad-visor once each semester. In addition, advisors are available year-round to assist students with specific questions. Athletic Department advisors give special attention to NCAA degree and eligibility requirements when assisting student-athletes.

Scheduling AssistanceCenter advisors have established relationships with faculty in many colleges and can intervene on the student’s behalf when scheduling problems arise.

Scholarship SupportA $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year to a student-athlete who has utilized the Center to significantly improve academic performance over the past year. Funding for this award is provided by the Port Endowment for Academic Excellence.

Time management is very important for a student-athlete. At the University of Illinois at Chicago, we recognize the unique demands of pursuing an academic degree and competing at the NCAA Division I level. Therefore, we offer the student-athlete a full-scale academic support program. At the heart of this program is the Port Academic Center.

The Port Academic Center is a great support service provided by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to help a student-athlete excel in the classroom and attain a bachelor’s degree or other advanced degree. Services available within the center include advising, tutoring, scheduling assistance, eligibility monitoring, scholarship support and optional accommodations for individual and group study.

The Port Academic Center is conveniently located on the lower level of the Physical Education Building. The 5,000-square foot facility serves as headquarters for the academic support staff and features a large public area for individual study, three smaller rooms for tutoring or group study, personal computer workstations linked to laser jet printers, a conference room, a reception area and private offices for counseling sessions.

The Port Academic Center, with all of its resources, helps UIC meet the challenge of tightened NCAA academic requirements, providing a “home base” for the academic life of its student-athletes.

Christened on June 10, 1999, the Flames Athletic Center is the crown jewel in the University of Illinois at Chicago’s effort to bring its 18 Divison I men’s and women’s programs to national prominence.

The $9.25-million, 50,000-square-foot venue is a state-of-the-art practice facility and features two NCAA regulation-sized basketball courts; a two-story compre-hensive weight training and cardio-fitness center; an in-house sports medicine facility; locker rooms for student-athletes, with two just for men’s and women’s basketball; as well as offices for the basketball, and athletic administration staff.

Several individuals provided leadership to the center through their generous gifts, and each was recognized with selected facilities in the new center being named in their honor. Among those are Pat and Peggy Colvin, whose funding established The Colvin Communication and Administration Center; Arnold J. Hartoch, who helped fund the Arnold J. Hartoch Baseball Suite; William and Cathy Merchantz, whose gift funded the Lambert Basketball Center; and Sidney L. Port, whose contributions set up the Port Hall of Excellence.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS - JIM SCHMIDT The University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has seen unprecedented growth and reached new heights both on the playing field and in the classroom under the leadership of Jim Schmidt. Named UIC’s fourth director of athletics on January 24, 1997, Schmidt quickly put together a department that could compete on a championship level, not only within the Horizon League, but on regional and national scenes as well. In Schmidt’s first 12 years, the Flames have captured more league titles than in the prior 15 years of NCAA Division I competition com-bined. Most recently, UIC garnered its second James J. McCafferty Trophy in 2006-07, the award honoring the most successful all-around athletic program in the Horizon League each season, and earned the league’s Men’s All-Sports Trophy just last year. Schmidt has also watched 42 of his teams represent UIC in NCAA postseason competition during his tenure. Among those NCAA tourna-ment appearances were first-ever bids for men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s tennis and baseball.

New history has been made each season under Schmidt, with the past year being no different. Highlighting the 2008–09 season were many memorable moments: •TheUICmen’ssoccerteamwontheHorizonLeagueregularseasontitleandadvancedtotheNCAATour-nament Sweet 16 for the second straight season. The Flames achieved a national ranking as high as fourth in the country in 2008 and featured the program’s first-ever First Team All-Americans in goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja, a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy recognizing the nation’s best college soccer player, and Baggio Husidic, a Major League Soccer draft pick of the Chicago Fire in 2009. •TheUICwomen’stennisteamcontinuedtodominatetheHorizonLeague,capturingits13thconsecu-tive league title and making its 11th straight NCAA Tournament appearance while running its unbeaten streak against league foes to 113 and counting. Last season, UIC student-athletes achieved an overall grade point average of 2.91, the second-highest overall semester GPA in the department’s history, with 121 reaching a 3.0 GPA or higher and 14 garnering a perfect 4.0 GPA. NCAA graduation reports list UIC Athletics’ graduation rates at 86% for all athletes who exhaust their eligibility. Under Schmidt’s direction in 1994, UIC Athletics instituted a Life Skills program designed to enhance the total student-athlete, with activities designed to improve personal, social and career development. Team build-ers, community service projects and leadership opportunities through the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) were also implemented. Schmidt has also played a key role in the local and national exposure of UIC Athletics. He helped expand radio coverage of UIC by reporters on ESPN Radio, WSCR, WGN, WBBM and other radio stations while increas-ing television exposure on ESPN, Comcast SportsNet Chicago and other local and national outlets. With a strong desire to win conference titles and earn regular appearances in NCAA postseason action, Schmidt has brought numerous conference championships to the UIC campus to aid in the task. For the first time ever, the Flames hosted the league’s men’s basketball championship in 1999 and 2000. UIC has also hosted conference tournaments in softball, baseball, soccer, cross country, gymnastics, women’s basketball, and swimming and diving, while the school also welcomed the NCAA softball regional championships to its

field in 1999 and the NCAA softball super regional championships in 2005. An NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament First Round match was also played at Flames Field for the first time in the fall of 2006 and again in 2008. Flames administrative long-term plans are ag-gressive as well. In addition to major projects such as the first phase of the “Campaign for Athletics” that was implemented and the Flames Athletic Center fundraising campaign that was completed under Schmidt, UIC’s overall strategic plan outlines detailed improvements for scholarship funding; renovations to facilities, including the aquatics center; and improvements to indoor competition/practice facilities for baseball, softball, track, ten-nis and volleyball. Construction of the stadium portion of the baseball and softball complexes and renovations to the soccer field are also high on the capital program’s list of improvements. While serving as associate athletic director, Schmidt helped develop a broad-based athletic program headed by strong men’s and women’s basketball programs and rapidly improving, nation-ally competitive Olympic sports teams. He also saw UIC’s student-athletes gain national recognition for top academic achievements while the teams and coaches earned regional and national expo-sure through conference championships and NCAA postseason competition. Schmidt assisted during the many historical de-cisions that took place over the last several years, including changes in conference affiliation leading up to UIC’s current membership in the Horizon League. Schmidt recently finished up a term as chair of the league’s men’s basketball committee. He had previously served as the chair of the televi-sion and finance committees. Schmidt has also served on the championships/facilities committee, equity committee and executive council. Schmidt began his collegiate athletics career in the fall of 1980, serving one year as the pitching coach at Western Illinois University while earning his master’s degree in sports administration. Arriving at UIC in 1982, Schmidt served as a pitching coach on the Flames’ baseball staff before being named an assistant to the athletic director in charge of marketing/promotions and daily opera-tions. From 1983–86, Schmidt handled all sports information duties as an assistant athletic director and assumed the title of associate athletic director in 1987. A 1979 graduate of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Schmidt and his wife, Mary, reside in Naperville, Ill., with their two children, Billy and Eva.
