UNCP SPORTS INFORMATIONThe UNC Pembroke Sports Information Office is

available to assist you with coverage of the Braves vol-leyball program. UNCP Sports Information DirectorTodd Anderson, assistant director Matt Pellegrin andintern Carlie Boese will be happy to serve you duringthe 2009 season.The Sports Information Office is located off of the

East Lobby in the English E. Jones Center directlyacross the street from Lumbee Guaranty Bank Field.For information regarding credentials, interviews,

statistics, press conferences, etc., please call theSports Information Office (910) 521-6370, visithttp://UNCPBraves.com or email Anderson [email protected] or Pellegrin [email protected] assist you during the season, please take time to

read the media information found on this and the fol-lowing page. Briefly, interviews must be arrangedthrough the Sports Information Office at least oneday in advance. Photographers and videographers areallowed to shoot daily practice, but interviews willnot be conducted until the day’s drills have concluded.Daily drills will be held at the English E. Jones Centeron the campus of the Braves.MEDIA CREDENTIALSRequests for working press credentials at UNCP

Re-quests may be sent via fax (910-521-6551) or email([email protected]), but all requestsshould be sent so that they reach the Sports Infor-mation Office at least 24 hours prior to the match.Because the demand for credentials is expected to

be high and space is limited, media agencies that coverUNCP and the visiting school on a regular basis willreceive top priority.The University does not discriminate based on age,

gender, orientation, race or religion.RELEASESBraves volleyball media information may be found

at UNCPBraves.com, UNCP’s official athletic website.Upon request, releases, statistics and other informa-tion may be provided by email or regular postal serv-ice.INTERVIEW POLICYUNCP coaches and players are available for inter-

views in person or by telephone after practice, Mon-day through Thursday, throughout the season. Playersor coaches will not be made available for interviewson Fridays. Player interviews can occasionally be setup for other times before practice with at least twodays advance notice to the Sports Information Office.All requests for player and coach interviews must gothrough the Sports Information Office (910) 775-4118.No player interviews will be granted the day before

a game or before the game on game day. No inter-views are to be conducted in the locker room, train-ing room or weight room. Interviews with assistantcoaches must be arranged in advance through theSports Information Office. Redshirting players are notrequired to do interviews.All interview requests for UNCP staff and players

must be made at least one day in advance.

POSTGAME INTERVIEWSUNCP’s locker room is closed after games, both

home and away, but Coach Jeff Billington and re-quested players and assistant coaches will be availablefor interviews following a brief NCAA-mandated 10-minute cooling-off period. For home games, the visitor’s locker room will be

closed as a matter of precaution. TELEPHONE/FAX/INTERNETUNCP provides telephones for media use in the

English E. Jones Center. All long-distance calls must becredit card, collect or billed to a third number. TheUNCP Sports Information Office has a fax machinethat is available by request in the media workroomafter the match free of charge. Information such asstatistics, postgame quotes, play-by-play, etc., will beavailable on a more timely basis at UNCPBraves.com.If arrangements are made in advance, postgame notes,quotes and game statistics may be e-mailed. Pleasecontact Assistant Sports Information Director MattPellegrin during game week or before the start of thegame to request e-mail service. Pellegrin can bereached by phone (910-775-4118) or by email([email protected]).Media will have use of wireless Internet in the Jones

Center. Hardwired ethernet ports willl not be avail-able during the season.FACILITY USE RESTRICTIONSThe University of North Carolina at Pembroke has

an interest in protecting its facilities, property andreputation associated with its intercollegiate sports.Therefore, no person shall be permitted to access oruse the arenas, facilities and other UNC Pembrokeintercollegiate athletic venues without first securingthe permission of the Athletics Director or his/herdesignee. The only exception is an individual whorecords an image (e.g. photograph, videotape) forhis/her non-commercial personal use. In no case shallany person be permitted to use these venues for thepurposes of promoting the sale or manufacture of al-cohol or tobacco or the promotion of any ventureassociated directly or indirectly with legal or illegalgaming or gambling.REAL-TIME INTERNET/AUDIO POLICYUNC Pembroke retains the rights to the distribu-

tion of play-by-play, statistical material and photo-graphs of UNCP volleyball during, and for 30 minutesfollowing, game action, just as it retains the rights tothe video and audio description of game action. Coach Billington’s coaching and playing experience spans more than 20years at the high school and collegiate levels. He is a highly recognized suc-cess at developing confident, outstanding volleyball players and helping themimprove their competitive level, focus, skills, and team play.His proven system of coaching maximizes the athlete’s potential while en-

joying the fun and exciting game of volleyball. He applies scientific principlesand methods along with personalized instruction and videotape analysis.The 2010 camps will continue to provide an excellent instructional and

motivational environment for the players. Coach Billington chooses his staffcarefully and designs the camps to maximize the use of time and facilities sothat each player has the best chance to strive for excellence while having fun.The camp focuses on in-depth training of fundamentals and proper body

mechanics as well as all aspects of team play, transition, positioning, andstrategies. Teams and individuals flourish in these camps.PHILOSOPHYCoach Billington believes in teaching in-depth volleyball fundamentals

through a proven system of scientific principles and methods, along with per-sonalized instruction and videotape analysis.The court coaches will personally work with each player, addressing her

needs by providing both team and individual instruction. The morning ses-sions will focus on fundamentals and proper body mechanics. In the after-noon, coaches will focus on team play, including offensive and defensivetransition, positioning and strategies. In the evening teams compete againsteach other. Every session is designed to maximize the athlete’s potential - physically

and mentally - while she experiences the fun and exciting game of volleyball.In an atmosphere that is highly motivational, he combines scientific principles,skill development, team building, conditioning, and mental preparation to fa-cilitate the successful development of each player and each team.HOW TO APPLYThe Jeff Billington Volleyball Camps and Clinics promise to fill up quickly, so

Entering his fifth year at UNC Pembroke, head coachJeff Billington led the Braves to their first winning seasonsince 2001 and their best record since 1994 in 2007.After spending his first two seasons rebuilding theUNCP volleyball program that went 15-55 the two yearsprior to his arrival, Billington has accumulated a 54-76overall record.The seventh head coach in the history of the LadyBraves, Billington came to UNCP after four successfulseasons at his alma mater, Frostburg State University inMaryland.In his final season at FSU, he was named Co-Coach ofthe Year of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Confer-ence after receiving Coach of the Year honors the pre-vious two seasons. He led the Bobcats to wins in theirlast 35 conference contests, including the last three con-ference tournament championships.Under Billington, Frostburg State compiled an 100-38overall record and a 39-6 record in the AMCC. In 2004,he became the program’s all-time winningest coach witha victory over Mary Washington on Sept. 16.Billington joined Frostburg after guiding the girls’ varsityprogram at Paul VI High School in Fairfax, Va., to a 73-21mark over a four-year period, including an impressive52-match winning streak that spanned his last two sea-sons. He led Paul VI to a 25-0 record in 1999, a 27-0mark in 2000 and back-to-back Washington CatholicAthletic Conference and Virginia Independent SchoolVolleyball Association state titles.

Paul VI finished the 2000 season ranked No. 3 in theWashington Post Metro Area poll. For his efforts, Billing-ton was named VISVA and Washington Post All-MetCoach of the Year in 1999, as well as VISVA Coach ofthe Year in 2000.In addition to Paul VI, Billington served as the assistantcoach for the George Mason University men's volleyballteam (1998) and the Marymount University women'svolleyball team (1995-96). He also coached the AsicsMetro Junior Olympic Girl's 16 team in 1999-00. From1993-2001, Billington taught health and physical educa-tion in Fairfax County, Va.Billington earned his bachelor's degree in physical edu-cation from Frostburg State in 1984 and his master's de-gree in human performance in 1993, also from FSU.While a graduate student, he taught health and physicaleducation classes, coached the Bobcat men's club vol-leyball team and also served as an instructor at FSU vol-leyball camps.Billington is a certified CAP Level I and II volleyballcoach. In her third year as a full-time assistant at UNCP, KrisWojieck spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons helping buildthe Braves' volleyball program as a graduate assistant. Her main responsibilities are defensive player develop-ment and recruiting. Wojieck's duties also include order-ing equipment, making travel arrangements, defensivecoordination, statistics, implementing summer campsand advising players in academic and career issues.During her time at UNCP, the volleyball team hasrecorded the highest grade point average among all ofthe varsity athletic teams. The volleyball program alsowon the Braves’ Cup this past year, which is given to theteam with the highest cumulative grade point average.Before her arrival in Pembroke, Wojieck served as agraduate assistant at her alma mater, Queens Universityof Charlotte. While at Queens, she worked mainly withdefensive players, while also overseeing the Royals' aca-demic development as well. A veteran instructor at the Jeff Billington VolleyballCamps in Maryland and Pembroke, Wojieck has alsoworked as a court coach at the Duke, Wake Forest andVirginia Tech Volleyball Camps. She spent the spring of2005 as an assistant coach with the Iredell County StarsJunior Olympics program in Statesville, N.C.Since graduating from Queens, Wojieck worked for LashGroup Health Consultants. There she gained experienceworking with several different pharmaceutical compa-nies to provide them with statistical information.

During her playing career, Wojieck played for the Royalsfrom 2000-04. Her junior and senior seasons saw theLewisburg, W.V., native play over 200 games, accumulat-ing 610 digs, including a team-high 321 digs in her senioryear. Wojieck graduated from Queens in 2003 with a degreein business administration with a concentration in cor-porate communications. In May 2007, she completed hermaster's degree in business administration at UNCPembroke.She resides in Pembroke.

Former St. Andrews Presbyterian College head coachDan Kreiger enters his first season as a graduate assis-tant coach with the UNCP volleyball program afterthree years with the Lady KnightsIn 2007, Kreiger coached the Lady Knights to their sec-ond straight 10-win season in conference play and a vic-tory in the Conference Carolinas Volleyball Tournament.Kreiger coached two All-Conference award winners lastseason and an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Districtselection. After taking over the SAPC volleyball team just beforethe 2005 season, Kreiger turned the program aroundincreasing the teams win total by 16 victories in 2006.Kreiger coached two All-CVAC selections, the CVACFreshman of the Year, and an Academic All-District IIIhonoree in '06. Kreiger also guided a squad that finishedthe 2006 season ranked No. 2 nationally in NCAA Di-vision II in digs per game.Kreiger went to St. Andrews after spending the 2004season as the head coach of the X-treme 18’s of theWestern Wake Volleyball Club in Cary, North Carolina.Kreiger was in charge of recruitment, player evaluations,planning and running practices, and assisting in all tour-naments.

Prior to moving to North Carolina, Kreiger coached themen’s volleyball team at Pennsylvania State University,Altoona College, for six years. Kreiger spent the firstfour season’s as a player and coach. Under Kreiger’s di-rection, the Lions attended the NIRSA National Cham-pionships three times, won the MACVC West Divisionin 2003, and had three top-10 finishes in the MACVCChampionships. Kreiger was responsible for setting upPenn State Altoona’s first ever club sports home eventand tripling the number of their matches. While at Penn State Altoona, Kreiger also served as anassistant with the varsity women’s volleyball team forfive years. With Kreiger’s help the Lady Lions were theAllegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular sea-son champs in 2001 and runner-ups in 2003. Kreiger graduated from Penn State Altoona in May of2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human De-velopment and Family Studies with a concentration inCommunity Human Services. Kreiger and his wife, Kelley, currently reside in Laurin-burg, North Carolina.

UNC Pembroke is committed to absolute compliancewith all NCAA and Peach Belt Conference rules andregulations. Institutional control of athletics is a fun-damental principle of NCAA legislation. It requireseach institution to conduct its intercollegiate athleticsprograms in accordance with the rules and regulationsof the NCAA. This responsibility includes ensuring thatcoaches, staff, and other groups representing the insti-tution’s athletics interests comply with all applicablerules.As a result, it is important for prospects, fans, andalumni to have some understanding of the principlesgoverning college athletics. Below are a few definitionsand rules that apply to all athletic boosters.NCAA DEFINITIONSREPRESENTATIVE OF ATHLETICSINTERESTS (BOOSTER)A “representative of athletics interests” (booster) isany individual or group that has ever:• Been a member of an organization promotingUNC Pembroke athletics.• Contributed to the Athletics Department or itsbooster organizations.• Assisted in evaluating or recruiting prospectivestudent-athletes.• Provided benefits (e.g. employment) toprospective student-athletes, enrolled student-athletesor their family members.• Otherwise promoted the UNC Pembroke athleticsprogram.Keep in mind that it is very easy to meet one or moreof these criteria and once you become an athleticsrepresentative, you retain this status FOREVER!PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETEA “prospect” is a high school student that has startedclasses for the ninth grade and also any junior collegestudent. A student that has not started classes for theninth grade becomes a prospect if the student receivesany benefits that the institution does not provide to allprospective students in general. An individual remainsa prospect until he or she starts classes at UNCP orreports for practice, whichever occurs first.STUDENT-ATHLETEA “student-athlete” is a student whose enrollmentwas solicited by an athletics staff member with the ex-pectation that the student would participate in inter-collegiate athletics.A student not solicited by anathletics staff member becomes a student-athletewhen he or she joins an intercollegiate team or re-ports for practice.RECRUITING“Recruiting” is any solicitation of a prospect or theprospect’s family by an authorized institutional staffmember for the purpose of securing the prospect’senrollment at UNCP and participation in athletics. Ath-letics representatives may not be involved in the re-cruitment of prospects except as outlined in thefollowing section.CONTACTA “contact” is any face-to-face encounter between aprospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian andan institutional staff member or athletics representa-tive during which any dialogue occurs.GUIDELINES AND REMINDERS FOR

BOOSTERS• A booster may not contact a prospect, prospect’sfamily, friends, coach or school administrator in anattempt to evaluate or recruit the prospect.• A booster may not expend funds to entertain orprovide transportation for a prospect or theprospect’s family or friends.• A booster may not write, make phone calls, or oth-erwise communicate with a prospect or the prospect’sfamily or friends for recruiting purposes.• A booster may not contribute funds to a prospect’shigh school or club team as a form of recruiting in-ducement or if solicited to do so by acollegiate coach.• A booster may attend a prospect’s athletic eventswithout contacting the prospect or his/her family.• A booster may send recommendation letters andnewspaper clippings about a prospect in their areato UNCP’s coaches.• A booster may continue a pre-existing relationshipwith a prospect and his/her family as long as the rela-tionship pre-dated the prospect’s recruitment or no-toriety as an athlete and the nature of the relationshipis not enhanced after his/her notoriety as an athlete.Such a relationship may not be for recruiting purposes.• A booster may host a current student-athlete oran entire team in their home for a meal, but onlyon an occasional basis.• A booster may provide a job for a student-athlete,but the job responsibilities must be legitimate and thepay commensurate for the task.GUIDELINES FOR EXTRA BENEFITSAn “extra benefit” is any special arrangement by aninstitutional employee or athletics representative toprovide a prospect, a student-athlete or his or herfamily with a benefit not expressly authorized by theNCAA. Boosters may not provide any special arrange-ment considered to be an extra benefit. Examples ofextra benefits include, but are not limited to:• Gifts of money, awards or other tangible items.• Use of vehicles or payment of transportationcosts incurred by prospect, prospect's relativesor friends.• Free or reduced housing arrangements.• Promise of employment after graduation oremployment of prospect's relatives or friends.• Special discounts or payment arrangements.RECRUITING GUIDELINES FORPROSPECTS LETTERS AND NOTESCoaches may begin to write notes and letters toprospects beginning September 1 of their junior yearin high school (September 15 after sophomore yearfor men’s basketball prospects).PHONE CALLS• Prospect Calling: A coach may receive a call initiated

by a prospect and paid for by the prospect at any time,including the prospect’s freshman or sophomore years.Prospects may call coaches collect at any time.• Football: Coaches may call a prospect at their dis-cretion during a contact period after June 15 in thesummer preceding his senior year.• Men’s Basketball: Coaches may call a prospect at theirdiscretion during a contact period after June 15 in thesummer preceding his senior year.• Women’s Basketball: Coaches may call a prospect attheir discretion during a contact period after June 15in the summer preceding her senior year.• Other Sports: Coaches may call a prospect at theirdiscretion during a contact period after June 15 in thesummer preceding his or her senior year.UNOFFICIAL VISITSThere are no limits on the number of unofficial (un-paid) visits to UNCP a prospect may make and no agerestriction on who may make unofficial visits. At eachunofficial visit, a prospect may receive three (3) com-plimentary admissions to a home athletic event. Noother expenses may be paid by UNCP. At certain timesof the year, unofficial visits are prohibited so please co-ordinate your visit with the coaching staff.OFFICIAL VISITSA prospect may only make a total of five official (paid)visits and only one official visit to UNCP. A prospectmay not make an official visit until the first day ofclasses of their senior year (January 1 of junioryear for men’s basketball prospects).
