FREEDOM’S FLIGHTA documentary of a rescue
June 2008The South Florida SPCA rescues
animals from an illegal slaughter facility where the animals, including horses,
are living in filth and misery andawaiting their cruel fate.
Many animals were rescued but this is
the story ofFREEDOM’S FLIGHT
Just anotherbrown horse?
The tattoo on Freedom’s lip,an indication that he wasa racehorse that ran ona track at some point inhis life, uncovered an
unbelievable history.
Freedom was born in Kentucky in 2005a descendant of such great racehorses as:
Seattle Slew
Secretariat
Gallant FoxOmaha
War AdmiralSecretariat
Seattle Slew
Freedom ran his last race at the age of 3. He came in 3rd place despite the fact
that he broke his leg shortly aftercoming out of the gate.
This crippling injury ended his careerand began a downward spiral
of heartbreaking events.
Seeing little value in a disabled Thoroughbred, his owner apparently
“gave him away.”
Freedom was given to two subsequent “pony ride” companies where he
never received treatment for his injurybut continued to work until he could
no longer walk.
He was sold for
$50to a slaughter facility.
When he was recued, veterinarians diagnosed Freedom with:
Severe emaciationStrangles (infectious equine disease)
Rain rot (fungus causing hair/skin loss)
Bites and woundsBurns and rashesHoof abscesses
Detoxification from steroid abuseBroken cannon bone
This is FREEDOM’S FLIGHT today.
Rescued by the South Florida SPCAand adopted by a Richard “Kudo” Couto.
Freedom is slowly recoveringphysically and mentally.
Although he can never be ridden,he is a barn favorite and will live
out his days with the dignity, care and lovethat all horses deserve regardless of the
“value” that they may have.
We would like to thank Jeff Burnside of NBC for sharing Freedom’s story and the issue of
illegal horse slaughter with the public.
It is only through awarenessthat we will end such abuses.
