SEASON PREVIEW

After posting 68 wins in 2008 and 2009, themost by a Liberty head coach in his first two sea-sons, under Jim Toman, the 2010 Liberty Flamesbaseball team will look to continue the program’sprogression by capturing a Big South Champi-onship and participating in a NCAA Regional forthe first time since 2000.

“We have to take that next step,” statedToman. “And, the next step is winning the confer-ence’s regular season title or winning the BigSouth tournament, and getting into a NCAA re-gional.”

With seven of their eight position starters backfrom last season’s 33-21 squad and the addition ofseveral new pitchers to bolster the mound staff, the Flames are optimistic about their chances ofobtaining their goals this season.

“I am pleased with the depth of our team,”noted Liberty’s third-year head coach. “We haveseveral capable players at each position and 16pitchers. We will have a lot more options to go toand a lot more moves that we can make during agame.

“With a stronger bullpen, I think we will beable to shorten games. In the past, we didn’t haveenough people in the bullpen we could go to. Butnow, we have at least seven guys we can count onto come in at any point in the game and shutdown the opposition.”

The Flames will return 17 players, including itsentire starting infield, from last year’s roster. Lastseason, Liberty had the highest fielding percent-age (.974) and committed the fewest errors (53) inthe 37-year history of the program. In addition, the Flames welcome back three members to theirroster, who sat out last season.

Liberty will add 13 new faces to its roster in2010. Nine of the baker’s dozen are pitchers.

“A lot of our returning guys did well in the fall, and several of our newcomers look like impactplayers,” stated Toman. “By the time spring rollsaround, we should have everyone healthy andready to go. It should be an exciting team.”

A LOOK AT THE FLAMES BY POSITIONPitching

The Liberty mound staff this season will begiven a boost by the return of right-hander DustinUmberger and left-hander Shawn Teufel. The sen-iors are expected to fill two of the three weekendstarting spots in the Flames’ rotation.

“Dustin is well on his way back to health aftersitting out last year due to injury,” said Toman.“He has been a fixture of the pitching staff in hisprevious three seasons and we expect him to beone of our top guys.

“Shawn Teufel returns after a nine-win seasonand Steven Evans comes off a seven-win campaignlast year. I would expect them to be in our rota-tion also.”

Umberger enters his final season in a Libertyuniform ranked seventh on the school’s careerstrikeout list with 194. The team captain haslogged 267 innings for the Flames, posting arecord of 17-10 with three saves. In 2008, Um-berger led the Big South Conference with 88strikeouts in recording an 8-3 mark with a 3.80ERA.

Teufel, also voted a team captain, earned firstteam All-Big South honors in 2009. The left-han-der finished the year second in the Big South withnine wins and third with 72 strikeouts. He wasalso among the conference leaders in ERA (4.33).Teufel went 9-2 in 14 games over 72 2/3 innings, winning six consecutive starts from March 22 toMay 2.

Evans went 7-2 with a 3.96 ERA and a save in2009. The junior left-hander appeared in 16 con-tests, tying Teufel for the team-high in inningspitched by logging 72 2/3 innings.

The trio of returners will be joined by newcomerKeegan Linza as a starter. The 6-5 right-handertransfers to Liberty from Northwest Florida StateCommunity College, where he was an all-confer-ence performer.

“We have at least eight pitchers behind thosefour who did well enough in the fall that we thinkwe can use in the spring,” commented Toman.

Heading that group is senior Carter Browning, who was used solely out of the bullpen last sea-son. The right-hander was second in the Big Southand led the Flames with 29 appearances in 2009.Browning recorded a 2-2 mark with four saves anda 3.94 ERA over 48 innings.

He will be joined by fellow right-handed return-ers, sophomore Chris McDougal, who saw moundtime in 15 contests in 2009, and senior DaneBeakler, who returns to the roster after receiving amedical redshirt last season.

Freshmen Josh Richardson and Cameron Gian-nini, along with juniors Bryan Cole, J.J. McLeodand Chris Roach will see plenty of mound time thisseason. Zane Bator, Daniel Brown, Tim Dudley andJosh Healey will also compete for innings.

CatchersFor the first time in four years, a new face will

be behind home plate for the Flames. Four-yearstarter Errol Hollinger graduated this past May,leaving the position open to competition for thefirst time since 2005. However, Toman likes theoptions he has at the position.

“We have three guys who are good enough tobe there come the spring,” stated the formercatcher. “Nathan Thompson stepped up this falland preformed well, Jerry Neufang is a highlytouted junior college transfer and Trey Wimmer, who started at first base last year, is also a frontline catcher. So, I feel like we have several guyswho can get it done behind the plate.”

Thompson, a senior, was selected by his team-mates as a team captain in the fall. The senior hasa career .270 batting average, while Neufangtransfers from South Florida Community College, where he was named to the Florida Junior CollegeAll-State team and led the state of Florida’s juniorcolleges with 17 home runs last season.

Wimmer rounds out the possible candidates atthe spot. In 2009, he saw all his game action atfirst base.

InfieldersThe Flames return all four starters on the infield

from last year’s squad. Starting three freshmenand a junior college transfer, the Liberty infieldhelped the 2009 Flames set a school record with a.974 fielding percentage and commit the fewesterrors ever by a Liberty team with 53 over 54games.

SEASON PREVIEW

“We didn’t know what to expect from this grouplast year as they were all new, but they ended uphelping us to set a school record for fielding, whichis very impressive,” noted Toman about his infield.“They are all back this year, which is great, plus webrought in three new infielders who are pushingthose guys.”

At first base, Wimmer, a sophomore, returns afterhitting .299 with 32 RBIs, six doubles and six homeruns in 53 games last season. Joining him at the po-sition is freshman Justin Sizemore, who had a strongfall and is pushing for playing time, and senior ZaneBator. Both Sizemore and Bator could also be in theline-up this spring as the designated hitter.

Senior P.J. Jimenez returns at second base. Lastseason, Jimenez committed four errors in 51 gamesand was named to the 2009 Big South All-Tourna-ment team. At the plate, he swung a hot bat in thesecond half of the season, finishing the year with a.271 batting average, 13 doubles and four homeruns.

At shortstop, sophomore Matt Williams will lookto build upon his solid freshman campaign of 2009.Williams, who also was the Flames’ leadoff hitterlast season, started all 54 games, making only 10 er-rors and hitting .283 with 12 doubles and 49 runsscored.

At third base, 2009 Louisville Slugger FreshmanAll-American Tyler Bream returns for his second sea-son at Liberty. Despite having his season cut to 46games due to injury last year, the sophomore hit.337, while finishing the season third in the BigSouth with 57 RBIs and ninth with a .572 sluggingpercentage. Bream also had 16 doubles, two triplesand eight home runs in his maiden season in aFlames uniform.

According to Toman, newcomers Josh Richardsonand Austin Taylor are pushing for playing time at themiddle infield positions and third base, giving Libertyfive options at the three positions. Richardson, afreshman who also could see time on the mound, was the 2009 Virginia Independent Schools AthleticAssociation (VISAA) State Player of the Year, whileTaylor, a junior college transfer, was a 43rd rounddraft pick out of high school by the Cincinnati Redsin 2007.

OutfieldersJust like the rest of the roster, the Flames return

several players with significant playing time duringtheir Liberty careers in the outfield for 2010.

“We have seven outfielders and even a few in-fielders we may move to outfield,” noted Toman.“Who plays out there, especially left field, may de-pend on who is hitting the best at the time.

“It is a good problem to have, as we have abunch of guys out there who can swing the bats alittle bit.”

Leading the outfield returnees is 2009 Big SouthAll-Conference first team member Curran Redal. The senior is expected once again to roam centerfield for the Flames. Last season, Redal hit .380 with

42 RBIs and 50 runs scored. In addition, he had 13doubles, four triples and six home runs, while beingone of the hardest hitters in the nation to strikeoutin 2009, ranking ninth in the country by fanning onlyonce per 21.3 at bats. The outfielder set a Big Southrecord by hitting safely in 32 consecutive games lastseason.

In left field, experience abounds, but who mansthe spot remains unsettled. Returners Doug Bream,Jeff Jefferson, Kenneth Negron, Justin Richardsonand Kizuku Scott are all vying for playing time in leftfield.

Doug Bream played in 46 games, with 34 startsin the outfield last season. The junior hit .355 with33 RBIs, 13 doubles and six home runs. Meanwhile,Jefferson, also a junior, played in 38 games, all in theoutfield in 2009, hitting .310 with five doubles andseven home runs.

Joining them in the left field mix are two con-verted infielders, Negron and Scott. Negron, a seniorwho was All-Big South as a second baseman in 2007,has hit over .300 in a season twice during his colle-giate career and adds speed to the roster, as he hasstolen 20 bases in his two years at Liberty. Scott, like Negron, played on the infield, seeing time atboth second and third base last season. The sopho-more hit .236 in 27 games in his first year of collegebaseball, while battling injuries.

Richardson is also in the mix in the outfield. However, the sophomore, who bats from the leftside, is likely to see most of his action as the desig-nated hitter, and pinch hitting roles after several bigpinch hits for the Flames last season.

In right field, transfer Michael Robertson andCasey Brown are possible options. Robertson, asophomore, was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in

40th round of the MLB Draft last June. He addsspeed to the Liberty roster. Brown hit .314 in 42games after transferring to Liberty from junior col-lege in 2009. The senior could also see some playingtime in center field.

WORTHINGTON STADIUM

March 28, 2008 was a historic night in the 37years of Liberty University baseball, as for the firsttime a night game was contested at WorthingtonStadium. A record crowd of 3,183 saw the Flameshost Coastal Carolina in the Big South Conferenceopening game for both squads. Also unveiled thatevening was a new state-of-the-art public addresssystem.

The installation of lights and public address sys-tem are just a few of several improvement projectswhich have taken place at the stadium over thepast three years.

Before the beginning of the 2008 season, afield turf collar was installed around the homeplate area, along with the placement of wind-screens down each baseline and the refurbishmentof the stadium’s scoreboard. Inside the adjacentCrowder/Muckel Field House, the Liberty teamlocker facility was refurbished with a Tuflex floorsurface and a new paint scheme and interior de-sign was implemented throughout the building.

Last year, a new batter’s eye was erected incenterfield along with the stadium’s bullpensbeing relocated to behind the outfield walls. In-side the field house, a new mud room was builtand several computers were purchased and addedto the team lounge for players’ use. Also, thetraining room was relocated in the building andupgraded.

In addition, the Flames’ locker room was namedthe Greg and Dotttie Clendenin Locker Room inhonor of the former Liberty baseball player and hiswife’s generous donation to the program, whichhelped provide funding for many of the upgradesat the facility over the past two years.

Prior to this season, padding was installed onthe outfield fences, while inside the field houseupgrades were made to both the kitchen and teamlounge areas. New furniture, wall art, a new airhockey table and a refurbished pool table are justsome of the new features in the clubhouse.

Liberty University moved into Worthington Sta-dium during the 1979 season after playing andpracticing at other fields throughout the city ofLynchburg for four years. At the time the Flamesmoved to Worthington Stadium, it wasnamed Liberty Field.

On May 3, 1986, the field was officiallynamed Worthington Field after former LibertyBaseball Coach and Athletic Director Al Worthing-ton. The Flames posted a 19-3 win over Marylandin the inaugural game.

Worthington came to Liberty in 1974 after play-ing professional baseball with the New York Gi-ants, Cincinnati Reds and Minnesota Twins. Hebuilt a strong base for the program and recruitedformer major leaguers and Liberty players SidBream, Lee Guetterman and Randy Tomlin. Wor-thington posted a 343-191 mark at Liberty as theFlames moved from the NCCAA level all the wayto the NCAA Division I ranks under his leadership. He also piloted Liberty to three fifth-place finishesat the NAIA World Series, from 1981 to 1983.

The name was changedfrom Worthington Field to Worthington Sta-dium during the 1995 season. Worthington Sta-dium was recognized in 1998 by Sports TurfMagazine as the “Diamond of the Year” in collegebaseball. The Flames have an overall record of505-231-5 at the facility since its inception in1979.

The state-of-the-art Crowder/Muckel FieldHouse opened in 2003, adjacent to the stadium. Itincludes locker facilities, restrooms, indoor battingcages, private boxes and a team lounge. The fieldreceived a face-lift in the summer of 1999, as newBermuda grass was laid out in the infield. Duringthe winter of 2000, a new netting backstop wasput in place, replacing the steel backstop, whichhad been in place since the stadium’s inception.
