73rd Annual Pottawatomie County Free Fair 2011 GENERAL RULES Rule 1. Interpretation, Amendments, and Violations Section 1. The Fair Board of the Pottawatomie County Free Fair Association reserves the right to interpret these rules and regulations and arbitrarily settle all questions arising in connection with the free fair that shall be held under the management of this board. Section 2. The management reserves the right to amend or add to these rules as they, in their judgment, deem it advisable. In the event of a conflict of general rules and special rules, the latter will govern. Section 3. Any person who violates any general or special rule will forfeit all privileges and premiums and be subject to such penalty as the Fair Board may determine. Section 4. In case there is not sufficient premium money to pay all premiums, it will be prorated. Rule 2. Entry Requirements Section 1. All entries to the County Fair are free, but no unworthy entry will be

received for exhibit. Open horse entry books will open Saturday morning at 9:00am and the show will begin at 10am. The 4-H & FFA Jr Fair Horse Show entry books will open at 7:00am on Thursday and the show will begin at 9am. Dairy animal entry books will open Wednesday at 3:00pm and close at 6:00pm. All other livestock with the exceptions of horse entry books, will open Thursday at 3:00pm and close at 6:00pm.

Section 2. All dairy animal entries, with the exception of horses, must be in place not later than 8:00pm on Wednesday. All other livestock entries with the exception of horses, must be in place by 8:00pm on Thursday. Section 3. All property of any character entered at the fair for any purpose shall be subject to control of the secretary or superintendent in charge. Section 4. Separate entry must be provided for each exhibit. Section 5. Entries must have been prepared or produced since the last Pottawatomie County fair, with the exception of livestock. Section 6. An exhibitor may enter only one exhibit in each class listed in the fair book, with the exception of livestock. Section 7. At least two (2) animals of any breed must be entered before the breed is recognized. If two (2) or more animals are not present within any one breed, that breed will show in the other breeds category. Section 8. No paint or coloring may be applied to beef, dairy, sheep, goat or swine entries. Swine may be washed and shown with water only as a dressing. Section 9. All livestock exhibitors must wear Board furnished entry numbers while in the show ring. Section 10. All exhibits must be claimed by 1:00pm on Sunday. Section 11. No exhibits will be released until the fair is complete, except as stated in the rules.

Section 12. Food Preparation Department exhibits should be entered on Wednesday. Exhibits do not have to be brought in until Thursday, by 8:30am, before judging. Entries not placing may be released after judging. Section 13. All facilities at the fair will close at 10:00pm and no one will be allowed in the commercial exhibit or trade show buildings before 9:00am. Section 14. You must be a resident of Pottawatomie County to exhibit at the fair, unless otherwise provided by special rules. Rule 3. Exhibitor Duties and Privileges Section 1. Exhibits of livestock from Pottawatomie County must be owned by the exhibitor at the time of exhibition, all other exhibits must have been produced in Pottawatomie County, provided that citizens of school districts overlapping into other counties are eligible to compete in the Pottawatomie County Fair. All Junior exhibitors are to be actively involved in the preparation and construction of their projects with a minimum amount of assistance limited to parents, guardians, brothers and/or sisters, agricultural education instructors, 4-H leaders, and County Extension agents. Section 2. 4-H & FFA horse show entries will be taken at 7:00am and the show will

begin at 9:00am Thursday morning. On Saturday morning, Open horse show entries will be taken at 9:00am and the show starts at 10:00am.

Section 3. All dairy animal entries will be taken from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Wednesday. All other livestock entries, with the exception of horses, will be taken from 3:00pm to 6:00pm on Thursday. Section 4. The livestock stalls will be assigned at the time of entry. Exhibitors shall keep such spaces or stalls in clean condition at all times during the fair. Section 5. All 4-H & FFA members must enter in the Junior Division unless there is no place for entries, then one can enter open class. Section 6. Any member of the Fair Board shall have access to all premises of any character on the fair grounds or concessions at any time during the fair. Section 7. If it be ascertained that any exhibitor has made or caused to be made any false statement in regard to any exhibit or if any exhibitor, or his agent, shall attempt to interfere with the judges in the performing of their duties, he shall be excluded from all competition or exhibition on the grounds of the association of any fair and any awards that he may have received may be forfeited at the direction of the Board. Section 8. The decision of the judges shall be final and no appeal will be considered except in case of protest. All exhibits in the Hobbies, Arts and Crafts must be in large part made or assembled by the exhibitor. Livestock entries must be cared for by the exhibitor for a minimum of 90 days prior to the opening date of the fair. Rule 4. Protests Section 1. All protests shall be made to the secretary in writing within four hours after the final decision of the judging is made public, and shall be accompanied by a deposit of $100.00 which shall be forfeited in case the protest is not sustained. Said protest shall state plainly the section of violation, cause of complaint or appeal. Protest must be filed by a minimum of three exhibitors in the respective section.

Section 2. The Executive Board reserves the final and absolute right to determine all questions regarding the awarding premiums. Section 3. In addition to the right to protest herein granted exhibitors, the directors reserve the right to take recognizance of fraud, consummated or attempted in connection with any exhibit, and take action as they may deem advisable. Rule 5. Powers and Liabilities of the Association

Section 1. The management will use every precaution to guard against extortion in any form on fair grounds and any violation of this rule shall result in forfeiture of every privilege, contract or money paid in, and expulsion from the grounds. Section 2. The management reserves the right to remove from the grounds any exhibit, animal, concession or show that may be objectionable, or to remove any sign, banner, identification mark or signature, or advertising matter of any kind which may be deemed objectionable. Section 3. No diseased animal or fowl will be permitted to be exhibited or occupy space at the fair, and every precaution will be taken to enforce this rule. However, the management will not be responsible for any loss or damage that may be sustained by anyone through violation of this rule. Section 4. No claim for any injury to any person or property shall be asserted or suit instituted or maintained against the Free Fair Association, its officers or agents, representatives, servants, or employees on behalf of any person, corporation or firms as a result of damage sustained on the grounds of this fair. Rule 6. Premiums and Awards Section 1. The following colored ribbons shall be used in designating awards: Champion Purple First Premium Blue Second Premium Red Third Premium White Fourth Premium Pink Fifth Premium Yellow Sixth Premium Green

These ribbons will be attached only by the Superintendent or his/her assistant.

Section 2. Where there is no competition, the judges shall award first, second, or third premium prize according to the merits of the article, and no premium shall be awarded an unworthy exhibit. Section 3. No prize will be awarded on articles not mentioned in this catalog. Section 4. All premium checks can be claimed Sunday at the time of release of livestock and other exhibits. Section 5. In order to get this premium list in the hands of the people so plans can be made for exhibition, it is necessary that it go to press before funds are approved by the Excise Board. It is understood that premiums are subject to approval by the Excise Board and should they find it necessary to reduce funds, the Fair Board reserves the right to reduce the amount of premiums offered without further notice. No premiums will be paid in full

until the entire expense of the fair has been tabulated. Then, if there is a shortage, all premiums will be cut proportionately. Section 6. Any premium check that has not been picked up on the last day of the fair by 1:00pm may be obtained from the OSU Extension Office no later than October 11. Rule 7. Miscellaneous Section 1. All rights that are applicable shall be made part of all contracts made with concessionaires. Section 2. A superintendent and one assistant will be appointed for each department, whose duty it shall be to receive the exhibits, properly classify them and to assist the judges.

SPECIAL AWARDS The Ann Gilbert Memorial Award is an award for the Pottawatomie County Fair. An Award given to an outstanding youth exhibitor in memory of Ann "Sis" Gilbert, a long time supporter of the fair and the youth of Pottawatomie County. This award goes to an individual who represents the qualities she believed in and is selected by an anonymous committee: 1. Positive Attitude 2. Good Participation 3. Horses entering the Pott. County 4-H and FFA Junior Horse Show must have a current negative Coggins Certificate dated within 12 months of the fair horse show date. Horses without a current negative Coggins Certificate will not be allowed to show and must leave the grounds immediately.

Entries in this department will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Horse show will begin at 10:00 a.m. No entries will be accepted after the start of the first class. Proof of a negative Coggins test dated within 12 months of the fair horse show is required for any and all horses entered. Rule 2. Stalls will be on a first come first serve basis. Rule 3. All animals must be properly groomed for the show. Rule 4. No one under 18 years of age will be allowed to show a stallion. Rule 5. You must enter the class of your age bracket only. Rule 6. An exhibitor may show only one animal per class. Rule 7. Age of horse & contestant will be computed as of the day of the horse show. Rule 8. Horse show will be held in the Fred Humphrey Pavilion. LIVESTOCK OPEN DIVISION

Rule 1. Eligibility: Exhibitors in this department must be bonafide members of a 4-H Club or FFA Chapter in Pottawatomie County. Rule 2. Exhibitors in this department must have continuously owned their calves,

sheep, goats and/or swine for a period of 90 days prior to the opening date of the Pottawatomie County Fair.

Rule 3. Each exhibitor may not enter more than two calves, three lambs, three goats and three pigs in the market class division. They may be shown in a single class or in different classes.

Rule 4. All exhibitors shall be allowed to enter only two entries in each breed classification of the breeding stock. Rule 5. Each exhibitor must assume all risk in showing his or her animals. Every precaution will be taken to prevent damage to animals; but, neither the Pottawatomie County Fair Association or the Junior Department Heads will assume responsibility in case such occurs. Rule 6. FEED. Each exhibitor may bring his or her feed or purchase same with out restriction. Rule 7. Exhibitors are expected to accompany their livestock to the show, care for and exhibit same. Rule 8. Junior exhibitors will receive awards as follows: All breed champions in each species will receive an award. High Point buckles will be given to the high point winner in livestock according to the livestock high point chart. Each exhibitor may only win one high point buckle per fair. Rule 9. All exhibits in this division must be properly entered and in place no later than 8:00pm on Thursday, with the exception of the dairy, and are to remain in place until released by fair officials unless otherwise stated under specific Rules. Rule 10. Stalls will be allotted as entries are received. Rule 11. Showmanship ages: 15 years of age and above will show in Senior Showmanship, 12-14 years of age will show in Intermediate Showmanship and 9-11 years of age will show in Junior Showmanship. All showmanship awards are sponsored by the Pottawatomie County Fair Board. The age will be determined as of January 1 of the current year. Rule 12. All swine must be pseudorabies tested 30 days prior to the opening day of the fair. All reproductively intact sheep and goats must have a regulation state or federal Scrapie identification tag or tail web tattoo. Rule 13. Judges are instructed to lay stress on the evidence of superior breeding qualities. Rule 14. All 4-H and FFA members must enter the Junior Division, unless there is no place for entries, then on can enter open class. Rule 15. Junior Division market animal entries will be divided, using natural breaks, as equally as possible into classes. Rule 16. Heifers must be registered in the individual’s name with their respective breed associations, original papers required. A breed show will be held for all breeds registered and recorded. Classes will be divided utilizing 6 months or less, natural age break.

All Rules governing the livestock department as well as the General Rules and Regulations governing the Pottawatomie County Fair apply in this department. Rule 2. Stalls will be allotted as the entries are received from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm and no entries will be received after 6:00 pm on Thursday. Rule 3. All entries must be in place not later than 8:00 pm on Thursday. Rule 4. Animals shall not be removed until the close of the Fair except when affected with disease and in such cases, only upon written permission of the Superintendent. Rule 5. Any exhibitor may enter but two animals in any individual class. Rule 6. Exhibitor will furnish bedding and feed for animals and keep spaces clean. Rule 7. In breeding classes, all female animals 42 months of age or over must have produced a calf carried to maturity within the past eighteen months to be eligible to show. Any bull over 36 months old that has not dropped, to his service, a living calf during the eight months preceding the opening day of the fair, shall be deemed as barren, and as such shall be excluded from competition. Rule 8. In making awards in the beef breeds, the judges are instructed to lay stress on the evidence of superior breeding qualities. No animal having hereditary unsoundness will be allowed to compete. Rule 9. Animals owned in partnership may be entered in all classes in which they are eligible in one partners’ name. Rule 10. Only prize winners in single divisions in open competition may compete for championship. Rule 11. POULTRY DEPT. F Open Division Superintendent: Kay Jenks

Rule 1. All poultry department entries MUST BE PRE-ENTERED on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 from 3:00-6:00pm. NO entries will be taken after Wednesday at 6pm. No birds or rabbits will be caged on Wednesday. Rule 2. Exhibitors must see that their birds and rabbits are entered in the proper

class. All birds will be judged as singles. There will be no trios shown. There will be a two bird limit in each sub-class (Cock, Hen, Cockerel or Pullet) and a twelve bird limit per junior exhibitor. There will be a six bird limit per open exhibitor. Any exhibitor may only show 3 birds in a premium class. Cock and hen are birds hatched prior to 2011, cockerel and pullet are birds hatched during 2011.

Rule 3. Junior Division exhibitors are members of 4-H and FFA only. All other exhibitors are open class exhibitors. Rule 4. All birds will be pullorum tested prior to caging. Birds will be caged Thursday, September 8, 2011 from 3-6pm. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Rule 5. All sick or infested birds will be removed from the show. All birds with clipped wing feathers will be disqualified. Rule 6. No sparred game chickens (fighting chickens) will be shown and are banned from the show. Rule 7. All birds will be judged by comparison and the judge shall use the New American Standard of Perfection, revised, as a guide. All birds not recognized in the American Standard of Perfection (mixed breeds, hybrids) should be entered in the all other breeds categories. All decisions of the judge are final. Rule 8. Premiums offered for single birds are as follows: First - $3.00 Second - $2.00 Third - $1.00

JUNIOR DIVISION - 4-H and FFA LIVESTOCK DEPARTMENT Rule 1. ELIGIBILITY: Exhibitors in this department must be bonafide members of a 4-H or FFA Chapter in Pottawatomie County. Rule 2. Exhibitors in this department must have continuously owned their calves for a period of 90 days and their swine, goats and sheep for a period of 90 days prior to the opening date of the Pottawatomie County Fair. Rule 3. Each exhibitor may not enter more than two calves, three lambs, three

goats and three pigs in the market class division. They may be shown in a single class or in different classes. Rule 4. All exhibitors shall be allowed to enter only two entries in each breed classification of breeding stock. Rule 5. Each exhibitor must assume all risk in showing his or her animals. Every precaution will be taken to prevent damages to animals; but, neither the Pottawatomie County Fair Association or Junior Department Heads will assume responsibility in case such occurs. Rule 6. FEED: Each exhibitor may bring his or her feed or purchase same without restriction. Rule 7. Exhibitors are expected to accompany their livestock to the show, care for and exhibit same. Rule 8. Junior exhibitors will receive awards as follows:

All breed champions in each species will receive an award. High point buckles will be given to the high point winner in livestock

according to the livestock high point chart. Each exhibitor may only win one High Point belt buckle per fair.

Rule 9. All exhibits in this division must be properly entered and in place no later than 8:00 pm Thursday, with the exception of dairy and to remain in place until released by fair officials unless otherwise stated under specific Rules. Rule 10. Stalls will be allotted as entries are received. Rule 11. Showmanship ages 15 years of age and above will show as Senior

Showmanship, and 12-14 years of age will show for Intermediate Showmanship 9-11 years of age will show for Junior Showmanship.

All Showmanship awards are sponsored by Pottawatomie County Fair Board. The age will be determined as of January 1 of the current year. Rule 12. All swine must be pseudorabies tested 30 days prior to the opening day of

the fair. ALL SWINE EXHIBITORS MUST HAVE A PREMISE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER AS PER STATE LAW. All reproductively intact sheep and goats must have a regulation state or federal Scrapie identification tag or tail web tattoo.

Rule 13. Judges are instructed to lay stress on the evidence of superior breeding qualities. Rule 14. All 4-H and FFA members must enter Junior Division, unless there is no place for entries, then one can enter open class. Rule 15. Junior Division market animal entries will be divided, using natural breaks, as equally as possible into classes.

No plant should extend above or below the display board. Plants must be exhibited in the bloom or mature stage of growth and include a portion of the root system if you are in 4-H. PLANT SCIENCE 4-H & FFA Horticulture Division Home Garden Food Basket – 4-H & FFA This exhibit is a quality selection of 5 to 9 different kinds and/or varieties of mature fruits and/or vegetables. Amounts of fruits and vegetables in this exhibit should be such that they can be arranged in a neat and orderly manner and have good eye appeal. There must be enough of each fruit or vegetable for the judge to determine quality. All fruits and vegetables exhibited must be grown by the exhibitor. No specimens in this exhibit may be entered in another class. Any combination of fruits and vegetables may be used. Those not listed in catalog may be included. The exhibit must be in a container such as a basket or box. It may be covered with a clear, plastic cover, but judges must be able to handle produce to determine quality. SECTION Q302 4-H PHOTOGRAPHY These exhibits consist of photos taken by the individual exhibitors. A photo can be entered only one

year. Individuals can exhibit in only one Unit, and may enter only one exhibit per class in that unit. Unit 1 is for members who have taken pictures for three years or less, Unit 2 is for those who have taken pictures for four to six years, and Unit 3 is for those who have taken pictures for more than six years. All ages within each unit are as of January 1 of the current calendar year.

DIGITAL PHOTOS may be entered. Manipulated or altered photos are not allowed in the 4-H Photography section, but may be entered in the 4-H Science and Technology section as photographic illustrations. Adjustments to digital photographs are limited to color and contrast adjustments, cropping, gray scaling, exposure adjustments, and red eye reduction (with the exception of classes 25-28).

PRINTS: Black and white or color prints may be exhibited. Prints must be no smaller than 3.5‖ x 5‖ and no larger than 5‖ x 7‖ (except when panoramic prints are used) for all classes, except classes 5, 10, 14, 18, and 22 where prints may be up to 8‖ x 10‖. Prints should be printed on photo-quality paper (not copy paper). Print quality is taken into consideration by the Judges. Photos will be disqualified if in a frame.

TITLES, CAPTIONS AND OTHER REQUIRED INFORMATION: On the front of the board, there must be a title (i.e. My Trip to the Zoo, or My Favorite Photo) and each photo must have a caption giving the viewer more information about the photograph. The back of each board must include the exhibitor’s name, county, number of years in the 4-H photography project, camera type (digital SLR, digital point-and-shoot or 35 mm film),and megapixels (if camera is digital). If the exhibitor is entering classes 11-21, please include the film speed or digital ISO, shutter speed and aperture (if the camera is adjustable).

BOARDS: Prints must be securely attached to the surface of a white or a colored foam core, poster, or mat board. No double matting, use of multiple layers or more than one color. The entire print must be seen and cannot be masked in any way. Boards must be 10‖ x 10‖ or 14‖ x 14‖ for all classes, except classes 15-17 and 19-21 where boards must be 14‖ x 14‖.

Baby books prepared earlier by parents may not be entered unless 4-H'er reworks the information. See Unit One, page 13. Do not confuse with class 4, Children's Book.

2. Puzzles Help Children Learn Any size. Two (2) puzzles developmentally appropriate for children at two distinct age and ability

levels. Each puzzle must have its own storage container. Puzzles must be sturdy and covered so they can be cleaned with damp cloth. Describe the child for whom each puzzle would be appropriate by giving child’s age, interest, and ability. Puzzles should be suitable for either boys or girls. Do not indicate that a puzzle is for boys or girls only. See Unit One, page 13. Commercially made puzzles are not eligible.

LEISURE EDUCATION DIVISION SECTION 4310 4-H POSTMARK Books should be permanently labeled with exhibitor's name and county inside the front cover. This

exhibit consists of postmarks, not stamps. Exhibits may be illustrated. All postmarks must be mounted on either 8 1/2" x 11" note paper or photo album page (not to exceed 10‖ x 17‖) of any color in a binder. All entries are limited to thirty (30) pages for the collection, plus an additional page for the objective of the collection. Plastic cover pages are acceptable to protect the mounts. NATURAL SCIENCES DIVISION SECTION Q315 ENTOMOLOGY - 4-H INSECT EXHIBITS Exhibits in Classes 2-5 must be in standard insect display boxes. Specifications for the standard

insect box are available at the OSU County Extension Office. At least one-third of the specimens in any collection must have been collected during the current project year. Each insect should be identified by their common name using the correct spelling. Exhibits collections for classes 1 through 5 are allowed a maximum of five (5) foreign and/or out-of-state collected insects.

1. First Year - The exhibit shall consist of 25 adult insects (representing at least 5 orders) which are displayed in a box approximately 2.5"x 5.5"x 8.5". Cover with plastic wrap or rigid plastic. Nine and ten year old exhibitors entering class one may be allowed to enter class one a second year, if the exhibit did not place in the top five at the State Fair the previous year, as long as modifications are made to the exhibit.

2. Second Year - The second year exhibit shall consist of 40 adult insects (representing 8 to 10 orders) which are displayed in the standard insect display box.

3. Third Year - The third year exhibit shall consist of 75 adult insects (representing 10 to 12 orders) which are displayed in the standard insect display box.

4. Fourth Year - The fourth year exhibit shall consist of 100 adult insects (representing 13 to 16 orders) which are displayed in the standard insect display box.

5. Fifth Year and Beyond - The exhibit shall consist of 130 adult insects (representing 17 to 21 orders) which are displayed in the standard insect display box. There is no limit on the number of years this class may be entered, if exhibit has additions or major modifications.

6. Self-Determined Entomology Exhibit/Collections - Designed to allow exhibitors to prepare displays indicating expanded interest beyond the requirements of collections exhibited in previous years. Exhibits should be of an educational nature, attractive in design and easy to understand. A written report explaining the nature or purpose of the project must accompany the exhibit. Participants in this class are also allowed to have an entry in one of the first through fifth year classes. There is no limit on the number of years that one can enter the advanced class. Exhibitors can continue to exhibit in the self-determined class as long as new exhibits are entered or if major revisions are made on a previous exhibit.

4-H HONEY EXHIBIT 7. Comb Honey, one pint jar 8. Extracted Honey, one pint jar SECTION Q316 4-H FORESTRY FORESTRY BOARDS AND EXHIBITS MUST BE SIGNED AND DATED ON THE BACK BY THE EXHIBITOR. Two holes ½ inch in diameter and 1 inch from the top should be drilled in wood boards to facilitate displaying the exhibit. TREE LEAF EXHIBIT 1. Ages 9-11 years. Collection of 10 leaves from trees native to Oklahoma (no introduced species).

One specimen must be from a native evergreen -- pine or juniper. Include a twig & buds with each broadleaf specimen. Exhibit must be properly labeled and displayed on board 22" wide and 28" tall.

2. Ages 12-15 years. Collection of 15 leaf specimens, representing at least three of the five basic leaf types, from trees native to Oklahoma (no introduced species). Two specimens must be from native awl or scale-leaf evergreen -- pine or juniper. Non-native species are acceptable only if they have been introduced for planting windbreaks and shelterbelts. Include a twig with buds with each broadleaf specimen. Exhibit must be properly labeled and displayed on board 28" tall and 44" wide. Two 28" x 22" boards hinged in the middle are more portable.

3. Ages 16 & over. Collection of 20 leaf specimens, representing four of the five basic leaf types, from trees native to Oklahoma. Three specimens must be from needle, scale or awl-leaf evergreens. Species of pine not native to Oklahoma are acceptable if they have been introduced for planting windbreaks and shelterbelts. The palmate leaf sample must come from a native Oklahoma species.

WOOD SAMPLE EXHIBIT 4. Ages 9-11 years. The exhibit shall consist of six (6) wood samples (3 hardwoods and 3 softwoods)

mounted on plywood ¼‖ thick x 22‖ wide x 20‖ high. 5. Ages 12-15 years. The exhibit shall consist of eight (8) wood samples (4 hardwoods and 4

softwoods) mounted on plywood ¼‖ thick x 22‖ wide x 20‖ high. 6. Ages 16 years and over. The exhibit shall consist of eight (8) wood samples (4 hardwoods and 4

softwoods) each of which shows the end, edge, and surface grain displayed on a board ¼‖ thick x 22‖ wide x 20‖ high.

SELF-DETERMINED EXHIBIT This exhibit shall consist of a poster, model, or any one of a great number of other creative efforts by

the club member which relates to the science and technology of forestry or is otherwise directly related to forestry. If display not to exceed 36‖ x 36‖ (depth x width) or poster not to exceed 14‖ x 22".

SECTION Q317 GEOLOGY Rock-mineral-fossil exhibitors should securely mount their specimens in a wooden display case with

a glass or rigid plastic cover. Display box is to be a standard 18" x 24" 3 1/2", the same type display cases as for Entomology. Class 1 may be displayed on 18" x 24" plywood or stiff cardboard that has been made suitable for hanging, although a box is recommended. Each sample should be mounted and labeled in a neat, orderly manner. Labels should include common name, date, location found and mineral use. At least one-third of the specimens in any collection must have been added during the current project year.

Class 1. Fifteen (15) different unpolished rocks, minerals or fossils collected from Oklahoma. 2. Thirty (30) different unpolished rocks, minerals or fossils, including specimens of sedimentary,

igneous and metamorphic. 3. Open Class - Educational exhibit depicting some phase of geology, testing of minerals, polished

rocks, etc. (Display should not exceed 24" x 24".) Energy/petroleum exhibits. Posters must be on 14" x 22" poster board. Each must be signed and

dated on the back in permanent marker prior to laminating. Judging committee may mark or punch if not marked. Text of posters and displays should be readable from at least 10 ft. away. Displays should be self standing and not bigger that 3’ x 3’ (width x depth) when sides are extended.

OKLAHOMA WILDLIFE Exhibits entered in this section should relate to a specific category of game or non-game animals or

birds. Junior (ages 9-13) 1. (A) A collection of fifteen (15) different kinds of plants, trees or shrubs known to provide food

or cover for wildlife, mounted on food and cover cards or (B) a seed board with fifteen (15) different kinds of seeds eaten by wildlife. (See 4-H Lit. # 720 updated 12/06.) No more than four (4) varieties may be cultivated crops. All of the specimens must have been collected during the current project year. For each plant or seed included list one (1) wildlife species that use that plant or seed (on the cover card or board). All plant species must be native to Oklahoma except that up to four (4) of the plants (or seeds) may be from cultivated crops

2. Scrapbook of Oklahoma Wildlife (cutouts, pictures or drawings) of at least five (5) mammals, five (5) birds and five (5) reptiles or amphibians. Give common name and what habitat they can be found in. Common names should be specific (i.e. black rat snake, pygmy rattlesnake, etc.)

3. Exhibit of the tracks of eight (8) wild animals or birds commonly found in Oklahoma. POSITIVE plaster casts should be mounted on masonite or plywood, not to exceed 12" x 24". Label each track with kind of animal or bird, which county track was found in, what habitat it was found in and what date the track was cast. See 4-H Lit. #473 Animal Tracks for more instructions and details.

4. Self Determined Exhibit. Posters must be 14" x 22". Displays must not exceed 3’ X 3’ (width x depth). Possible examples include but not limited to: a display dealing with methods of identification of waterfowl, a poster on wildlife, or environmental careers. See Lit, # 721 “Self Determined 4-H Wildlife and Fisheries Project Ideas” revised 12/06 for additional examples.

Senior (ages 14 thru 18) 5. (A) A collection of thirty(30) plants known to furnish food or cover for wildlife, mounted on food

and cover cards or (B) a seed board with thirty (30) plant seeds known to furnish food or cover for wildlife. No more than six (6) varieties may be cultivated crops. At least half of the specimens must have been collected during the current project year. For each plant or see include three (3) wildlife species that use that plant or seed (on the cover card or board). Species names must be used for both plants and wildlife in addition to the common name. All species must be native to Oklahoma except that up to six (6) may be from cultivated crops.

6. Evaluation of an Oklahoma habitat type that includes a general description of the habitat plant and animal species (species names must be used for plants and wildlife in addition to the common names) that occur within the habitat; a range map showing the habitat’s distribution within Oklahoma; and threats to that habitat. Examples of possible habitats include: playa lakes, tallgrass prairie, cross timbers, and shortgrass prairie.

7. Self Determined Exhibit. Posters must be 14" x 22". Displays must not exceed 3’ X 3’ (depth x width). Possible examples include but are not limited to: description of a Wildlife Management Area detailing area, location, habitat, management, and wildlife population trends (if known); or a poster with an emphasis on the life cycle, status, range map, and habitat of an Oklahoman threatened or endangered species. Species names must be use for plants and wildlife in addition to common names. See Lit. # 721 “Self Determined 4-H Wildlife and Fisheries Project Ideas” revised 12/06 for additional examples.

4-H FISHERIES Junior (ages 9-13 year olds) 8. Display board showing steps in tying two kinds of fishing knot used in tying lines or leaders. Use

cord instead of fishing line. Mount on board suitable for hanging, not to exceed 12" x 12". 9. Notebook describing habits and appearance of five (5) fishes found in Oklahoma. Information

with rubbing alcohol as described in Lit. #21.‖Aquatic Organism‖ Securely attach a completed Critter ID bookmark (Lit. # 29 ― Stream and Lake Critter Identification‖) to the jar using tape and a string around the jar neck. The project may focus on any area of environmental stewardship including recycling, education about a local environmental issue, planting trees or other area of interest. Judging criteria: 1. A brief project description and statement of purpose and objectives. 2. Creativity and quality of project. 3. A brief summary of project activities, extent to which objectives were achieved, knowledge

gained, significance of the project to the environment in the community, and number of people involved and/or impacted by project.

4. Media campaign. Include copies of newspaper clippings and other publicity related to the project. 5. Photographs may be included. 17. Individual Self-Directed Environmental Stewardship Project Educational report, display or exhibit on the efforts of the member to protect or improve the

environment in or near his/her community. Projects may include topics such as protecting water quality, recycling, illegal dumping, household hazardous wastes, reducing soil erosion on farmland, controlling urban runoff or other topics relevant to the community. Project may include: (1) Hands-on efforts (such as controlling erosion by tree planting or use of buffer strips), (2) Educational programs conducted in the community, including numbers reached and newspaper clippings (such as minimizing solid waste), or (3) A combination of hands-on and educational.

SECTION Q323 4-H HOME GROUNDS Exhibit Unit I - Landscaping Home Grounds ―Before and After‖ pictures not to exceed 5" x 7" of yard clean up, plantings or construction of

landscape elements mounted securely on one 14" x 22" sheet of poster board shall constitute this exhibit. Number of pictures should be no less than two or more than eight. Posters must be permanently signed and dated on the back.

A brief explanation of the project should be attached to the exhibit, and each picture must be labeled. The before and after pictures should show a definite change and should be taken from the same place so judges can evaluate the change.

Class 1. Junior - (Ages 9-13) 2. Senior - (Ages 14 and over) Exhibit Unit II - Herbarium Card These exhibits shall consist of dried and pressed specimens of leaves and other specified parts of

native or cultivated trees, vines and/or shrubs. Each leaf specimen should be mounted on a separate 8" x 10" herbarium card available at your county extension centers. Only the information required in your division should be filled out. The cards should be enclosed in a notebook or binder. Each specimen should be covered with a transparent plastic or similar covering to protect it from damage. No leaf should be more than 3 years old and at least one-third of the specimens must have been collected during the current project year. Instructions for collecting and pressing are available in the OSU Extension Center.

3. Ages 9-11 - A collection of 15 specimens with the following information: (1) common name; (2) general class; (3) kind of plant

Exhibit Unit III - Group or Club Exhibit 6. This exhibit to consist of landscape or environmental beautification project report on a project such as

home grounds, school, community center, church, city or roadside park, highway beautification, clean-up campaign, etc.

A group is to consist of 3 or more 4-H members under supervision of 4-H leaders. All projects must employ horticulture material for the purpose of conserving natural beauty of an area

or improving the aesthetic quality and/or function of an area. Other material such as concrete walks, benches, etc., may be used in addition to the horticulture material.

Judging Criteria A. A brief project description and statement of purpose and objectives. B. Creativity demonstrated and quality of the project. 1. Extent to which plan integrates total needs of area, short and long term. 2. Functional use and aesthetic considerations of horticultural materials and techniques.

Rule 1. Purpose: to promote the benefits of enrolling in Agricultural Education and joining FFA. Booths will be of the type that could be used in a variety of settings, such as FFA WEEK booths, shopping center displays, local fair. Rule 2. Booth will consist of a 6 or 8 foot table top display. The table must be 28 to 32 inches in height and the top must be 28 to 32 inches wide. The display board will be constructed of a 4’ x 8’ sheet of 1/2‖ or 5/8‖ plywood. The board is to be cut and hinged to consist of two 2’ wings and a 4’ center back. Rule 3. The back side of the display is to be painted dark blue. Rule 4. The chapter is responsible for covering the top of the table and skirting the table 6’ wide and from the top of the table to the floor. Rule 5. The current National FFA theme must be the only theme utilized. The display should not focus on any theme except the current National FFA theme. The local chapter name must be displayed on the exhibit. Rule 6. Booth space will be assigned by the superintendent upon arrival. Rule 7. Score card for educational booth:

FFA PROJECTS & EXHIBITS FFA Photography Series

1. Oklahoma FFA members are required to include photographs as a part of their State FFA Degree scrapbooks, State Proficiency Award applications, Reporter Contest scrapbook, Agri-Science Contest applications, etc, as well as assisting with many chapter aware applications such as Gold Emblem, etc., which also require photographs. The purpose of the photography contest is to provide an opportunity for individual FFA members to showcase their talent in this area while preparing for these state aware applications. 2. Entry must contain at least three, but no more than five, 5x7 color prints that were taken by the member. The series must be mounted on black poster or matte board, preferably with a protective covering over the prints. 3. Pictures on newsprint or those that have been mechanically altered will not be accepted. 4. Subject must relate to the members supervised agriculture experience program (SAE). 5. Entries will be judged on subject matter, effectiveness, photo quality, and composition. Premiums in each category: 1st - $3.00 2nd- $2.00 3rd – $1.00 R52. FFA Photography Series FFA News Reporting

1. FFA members are encouraged to submit newsworthy articles and pictures about outstanding accomplishments of individual FFA members and/or their local chapter to all forms of print and broadcast media. The purpose of the News Reporting Contest is to recognize individual FFA members for their talent and accomplishments in this area. 2. One news story must be in manuscript form, with not more than three double spaced, type written pages. One, and not more than one, 5x7 color or black and white photograph must accompany each story. Each page of the story and photograph must be mounted on one large sheet of black poster board, preferably with protective covering for each. 3. 4-H & FFA JUDGING Department S-Livestock Judging Contest Superintendent: Jeremy Frye Objectives: To measure the students’ knowledge in the following categories: a. To make accurate observations of livestock b. To determine the desirable traits in animals. c. To make logical decisions based on these decisions d. To develop the ability to select livestock that will provide increased economic returns to producers, as well as meet the needs of the industry and consumers. The superintendents, FFA advisors and 4-H leaders will interpret the rules of the contest for the contestants. The rules will follow the Oklahoma State Fair Catalog guidelines as closely as possible. A team of four FFA members or 4-H members enrolled in school will constitute a team. If one senior member is on a junior team, the team and all members must be categorized as a senior team. Juniors are members who have not yet reached their 14 th birthday as of January 1st of the current calendar year.
