Executive Summary

Following are the detailed ministry plans for Harris Creek Baptist Church. There has been a great amount of prayer, thought, research and no small amount of “constructive criticism” in the production of these plans. As a church staff, we acknowledge that without the wisdom, guidance and empowerment of the Spirit they are all for not. The first things we discuss are our vision and values. Our goal is always the same: To seek the welfare of our city by transforming individuals through loving God, loving others and serving the world. To that end you will find the mission, vision and values toward the front of the plan. These are the bedrock foundational items that the plans are built on. If a ministry idea seems good but conflicts with our core values, then we look for other ideas or strategies that preserve that which is essential to who we are as a body of believers in Christ. Next there are four strategic imperatives, which are big goals that we believe need to be accomplished as we pursue ministry in our context. Each imperative is in addition to the daily tasks of ministry, which include discipleship, leadership development, and care of souls. After that, you will find an abbreviated budget with the full budget included in the appendix. Each ministry plan that follows consists of its own internal situational analysis. This is an evaluation of ministry as it stands today. We tried to be honest in our appraisal so that the strategies that developed out of that analysis would move us toward our goals. This analysis also revealed how the overall purpose of the church will be pursued within that context. Each plan contains strategies, key results areas, timelines, and measurements that guide the execution and evaluation of the various programs for ministry.

One of our strategic imperatives focuses on strengthening the foundation for ministry and discipleship. When we talk about “transforming lives” what that means is discipleship, a lost art in churches today. To that end we are working on an overarching discipleship model based on ages, stages of life and spiritual maturity. You will see this idea reflected within the plans as we seek to increase the Biblical foundation and faith of our children, engage our youth in developing a biblical world view and help them take that world view with them through their college years. But discipleship doesn’t stop as people enter into adulthood. For our adults, we want to go beyond basic understanding of Bible stories. We want to develop mature believers by refocusing our efforts on study of scripture, and through the accountability developed in Life Groups and the application of that scripture to our lives. We want to be known as a place that truly deepens the faith of our people. Three of our strategic imperatives then focus on our city. These imperatives are listed in the plan. We believe that by strengthening and deepening our discipleship model, our members will be better able to be God’s salt and light to our world. The summary is easy: Matthew 28:6-7 Come, see…Go…Tell!

HCBC CORE VALUES

God OrdainedGod is the Author and creator of the church. He is the foundation upon which it is built. The authority He gives to us for our ministry comes from the Word of God. Therefore, we dedicate ourselves to the study of Scripture, submit to its teaching, and commit to do what it says.

Christ CenteredThe conviction that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation leads us to proclaim that Jesus is the center and circumference of the Christian faith. The function of this centrality for believers is that Jesus points beyond Himself to God, whom He reflects, even embodies, but does not wholly contain or exhaust. Thus Jesus is the revealer of God.

Spirit EngagedWithout the power and presence of the Holy Spirit we cannot understand Scripture, produce lasting spiritual change, or live to the glory of God. So we affirm a deep need to commune with God through spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, contemplation, celebration, scripture study and service.

Discipleship FocusedWe believe that every generation has a responsibility to those coming behind them to teach, lead and demonstrate the love of Christ. We are committed to strengthening the spiritual lives of families as they seek to become salt and light in their neighborhood. To accomplish these two tasks we pursue small communities dedicated to discipleship, which we call Life Groups. In Life Groups, we (1) open our hearts in transparent trust to each other (2) around the truth of God’s word (3) in the spirit of life-change accountability.

Gospel SaturatedWe believe that as God’s people we are called to proclaim the Gospel in meaningful and relevant ways. By Gospel we mean the good news attested to in the scriptures. This Good News is threefold. First our lives are turned inside out in that the death and resurrection of Jesus paid the price for our sin and calls us to personal renewal through confession of sin and acceptance of Christ. Second our lives are turned upside down in that Jesus defeated the powers of sin and evil in this world and creates a community of believers who live with kingdom (not worldly) values. Third our lives are lived future to present; understanding that Jesus will return to complete the renewal of the entire material creation, an end toward which he invites us to participate. This Gospel calls us to preach the good news of redemption from sin, to live as Christ’s body and to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the world.

HARRIS CREEK BAPTIST CHURCHMISSION AND VISION

MISSION DEFINEDThe mission of the church is the answer to this question, “Why do we exist?” It provides a clear statement on keeping the “main thing” the “main thing.”

OUR MISSION STATEMENTWe exist. . . To bring glory to God by:

“Seeking the welfare of the city by transforming individuals through Loving God, Loving Others and Serving the World.”

VISION DEFINEDThe vision of the church is the answer to this question, “Where are we going?” It provides a clear picture of our “preferred future.”

OUR VISION STATEMENTWhat we are becoming. . . By God’s grace and in His strength . . .

We Love God by: • Communicating the Gospel• Equipping All to Think Biblically• Creating an Environment of Awe through Corporate Worship

We Love Others by: • Participating in Life Group Communities• Engaging in Corporate Fellowship• Discipling the Next Generation

We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing our Community and World• Mobilizing every Member in Ministry• Working for the Well Being of Others in our Area of Influence

HARRIS CREEK BAPTIST CHURCHSTRATEGIC IMPERATIVES

STRATEGIC IMPERATIVES DEFINEDThe strategic imperatives of the church answer this question, “In addition to our current activities, what do we need to do over the next 12 -36 months to move towards the vision?” It provides intense focus on a few key initiatives that will help the church achieve its vision.

OUR STRATEGIC IMPERATIVES

1. Develop and implement a “Discipleship Equipping Model” that encompasses all life stage groups. It is important for us to understand and develop programs that build fully devoted followers of Christ. These actions cannot happen in “silos.” They happen over a person’s physical and spiritual life. It is our goal to identify these stages and provide proper teaching and equipping for our members. This model will be rolled out over the next few months with total implementation scheduled for Fall 2009.

2. Broaden the scope of “Sharefest” to include additional ministry opportunities and targets. There are many additional opportunities and avenues for HCBC to “seek the welfare of the city.” “Sharefest” provides an established and logical means to engage our membership in local impact ministries. This is a 2010 and beyond goal.

3. Establish a “Mothers Day Out” program to meet the needs of current HCBC families and the community. Our church has a significant population of young families who attend and are very faithful. The facility is well designed and currently underutilized during the weekdays. Mother’s Day Out programs provide a great opportunity to reach into the community and meet the needs of area families. We anticipate rolling this out in the Fall 2009.

4. Establish a HCBC “Second Campus” ministry location. “Seeking the welfare of the city” may mean that in order to reach the city, we must go to the city. Some of the highest impact, fastest growing churches today are not those who build bigger buildings and pursue higher attendance at one location. Multi-site churches provide an ability to reach into different cultural communities economically and missionally. This is a 2011 and beyond goal.

BUDGET RECAP

The 2009 Church Budget marks a transition in many ways. Some of the key changes and additional details are covered in the Ministry Plans, but the following highlights will provide helpful understanding to some of the numbers. The total budget is found in the appendix.

The budget was developed, reviewed and adjusted by the ministry department leaders, the Elder Board and the Lay Finance Team. Current year expenses and trends were taken into consideration above prior year budget amounts to provide a truer picture of actual needs and expenditures.

Budget BudgetReceipts 2009 2008

Undesignated Contributions $780,000 $807,856Transfers In 52,000 0Total Receipts $832,000 $807,856

Departmental ExpensesTotal Administration & Operations $296,500 $326,100Total Personnel $377,500 $302,500Global Impact/Missions $ 78,000 $ 82,056Equipping Ministries $ 80,000 $ 97,200Total Expenses $832,000 $807,856

Over and Under $ 0 $ 0

Comments• We plan for an impact on 2009 undesignated contributions due to economic factors,

as well as, membership adjustments. We also anticipate that this number will be close to where we will finish 2008.

• During 2009, HCBC will have moved to permanent financing on the new building. This will have a very positive impact on current and future debt reduction payments. As per the original presentation, a portion of the capital campaign receipts ($52,000) will be transferred in to help off-set some of the initial debt service payments. Any additional designated dollars given to the capital campaign will directly reduce the principle loan amount.

• A move to a new departmental accounting system makes year-to-year comparisons difficult since budgeted items are now “driven down” to the ministry departments.

• Debt service versus prior year is $8,000 less due to more favorable interest rates and moving to permanent financing

• The 2009 Budget includes a full-year of salaries for the two new staff positions that were hired in the fall of 2008.

• The Global Impact/Missions budget is historically allocated at 10% of undesignated giving.

ADMINISTRATION MINISTRY

MINISTRY PURPOSE STATEMENT

To develop excellence and biblical stewardship in the management and oversight of Harris Creek Baptist Church financial, operational and organization systems and processes.

INTRODUCTION

Harris Creek Baptist Church is in transition from a small church to a large church. Many of the procedures and processes that have served the church faithfully for many years will not be adequate in a new, larger environment. Identifying these critical areas, developing effective alternatives and prioritizing their implementation will provide much needed ministry support for church leaders, as well as each member.

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

Church Administration can be grouped into several sub-categories that while connected, serve many different purposes. The primary sub-categories include finance, human resources, facilities/operations and technology/communication.

Finance – The current church finance system focuses mainly on recognizing contributions, annual budget development and basic financial reporting. The church has employed an effective oversight process that has been consistent and has met the needs of the congregation to this point. A respected member of the congregation works with the Finance Team to provide budget development assistance, check signing and expense review.

Human Resources - Personnel objectives and reviews are in place and have been occurring on a semi-regular basis. The development objective process is based primarily on the functional aspects of the position versus specific objectives and performance planning. All volunteers and workers have been asked to provide information needed to complete background checks that are important in today’s environment.

Facilities/Operations – Facilities and operations decisions and follow-up have been managed by a combination of staff, deacon and other volunteer workers. The cleaning of the building is arranged through an outside contract with a local cleaning company. Because of the age of the building, traditional deferred maintenance needs are minimized.

Technology/Communications – A membership database called, Fellowship One, provides many powerful means of communication and member connectivity. At this point, only the basic capabilities are being utilized. The church’s financial information is resident on a local server and is backed up once a week.

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 9

Page 10: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

Miscellaneous – Current event notification and sign-up is hit or miss. Necessary lead-times are not being met because of the recent transitions and less than optimal planning. The event sign-up system, when evident, is accomplished via email or at “non-manned” tables in the hallway.

SUMMARY OF NEEDS/OPPORTUNITIES

Finance• Broader and deeper financial systems and reporting, commensurate with the needs of

a growing church• Move to departmental budgets with greater ownership and accountability• Greater financial transparency to the congregation

Human Resources• Revamp of performance planning system for all employees• Revised job descriptions and communication of changes to the congregation

Facilities/Operations• Effective oversight of the facility• Proper maintenance of the facility – current and deferred

• Centralize Sunday morning communication in one location• Develop a common communication tool that can be delivered in multiple formats –

print, web and email• Coordinate the look and “feel” of all communication methods to be distinctly HCBC

EVALUATION

Evaluation of the plan implementation, activities and results will be reviewed quarterly with church leadership and with ministry team leaders. Overall progress will be reported to the church in Ministry Plan updates.

SUMMARY

It is easy to try and separate the “business” side of a church from the ministry side of a church. In today’s environment, however, finances, operations and human resources make up more than two-thirds of a church’s operating budget. It is therefore important that we place proper attention and corresponding stewardship behind this key area of church ministry. It is our intention to be very prudent in how we approach money, facilities, people and communication.

PRAYER MINISTRY

MINISTRY PURPOSE STATEMENT

To encourage the priority and natural expression of prayer at Harris Creek Baptist Church, in which every person, initiative, and ministry are lifted up with prayer by the church family.

INTRODUCTION

It is essential that prayer be foundational to everything that happens at Harris Creek. As a “rising tide raises all boats”, prayer will impact every aspect of the life of the church. As the amount of prayer and its intensity increases for Harris Creek and our community, all of our ministries will benefit and our city will be impacted for God’s glory.

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

At present, Harris Creek stands as a developing “Prayer Ministry Church” (refer following page diagram B). We have a few members who shoulder the majority of our prayer ministry focus in the corporate body. Specific prayer opportunities have been communicated through “The Source” which is a wonderful prayer guide. In some areas, we remain a “Prayer-lite” church with prayer happening, but not as an integral part of who we are and what we do.

The difference between a “Prayer-lite” church and a “Prayer Ministry” church is the prayer ministry becomes its own key ministry area.

The difference between a “Prayer Ministry” church and a “House of Prayer” church is that prayer is not only recognized as its own ministry, but as an integral part and focus of each ministry within the church.

SUMMARY OF NEEDS/OPPORTUNITIES

• Prayer should take a higher profile position in the church• Special times of dedicated corporate prayer need to be established• Prayer team ministries should be strengthened and supported• Congregational focus on prayer needs to be heightened

MINISTRY PLAN

Loving God

Key Result Area 1: Growth in the priority and natural expression of worship-based prayer.

• Conduct at least one prayer summit in 2009 with emphasis on engaging the entire church body.

• Establish one week in where all church programs are prayer focused and incorporated into the whole church gathering for prayer.

Loving Others

Key Result Area 2: Loving others through the practice of prayer for one another.

• Create an ongoing “People in Need” prayer guide for staff and elders to pray over regularly by January 2009.

• Develop or identify one life group focused study on prayer and implement it during the 2009 curriculum year.

• Incorporate an online prayer request form that helps maintain connection with prayer needs.

Serving the World

Key Result Area 3: Establish intentional prayer for our community and world.

• Conduct a series of prayer walks through our neighborhoods and downtown. Involve multiple areas of ministry that engages 25% of active membership.

• Provide ongoing prayer support for our mission partnerships through a focused prayer guide based upon their needs and input.

EVALUATION

Evaluation of the plan implementation, activities and results will be reviewed quarterly with church leadership and with ministry team leaders. Overall progress will be reported to the church in Ministry Plan updates.

SUMMARY

It would be hard to overemphasize the importance of prayer to the wellbeing of a congregation. A church that is alive and seeking the welfare of its city will be a praying church.

WELCOME AND CONNECTION MINISTRY

MINISTRY PURPOSE STATEMENT

To provide a warm, caring and informative environment for guests and members looking to connect and serve in the membership and ministries of Harris Creek Baptist Church.

INTRODUCTION

The importance of creating and maintaining a welcoming environment in a church is of utmost importance. Elmer L. Towns developed the concept of the Law of Seven Touches, which simply says that if a church makes seven immediate and meaningful contacts with a guest, they tend to return to the church and associate with it. Barna also did a study that shows that most people make up their mind about returning to a church before the first service is over.

Therefore, it is vital that Harris Creek develop a culture where we can identify, greet, direct and inform new guests. For those guests who are looking for a church home, there should be a systematic approach to move them from the initial welcome to church membership and service.

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

Currently, our deacons provide greeting at each one of our entry doorways. Guests who are looking for additional information are directed to our “Welcome Desk” in the main entry area. The “Welcome Desk” volunteers will direct guests to the appropriate service or classroom. Additional support volunteers are available, particularly in the Children’s Ministry, to help answer questions and provide direction.

During corporate worship, guests are welcomed to our congregation and encouraged to “fill out a guest card” for any additional information needed. This card is collected and entered into our Fellowship One database for additional follow-up by one of our staff members.

For guests not attending a worship service, the objective is to direct them to our Connections Class. This class is designed to provide additional information about Harris Creek, our key ministry programs and to connect people into Life Groups.

For guests desiring church membership, we encourage them to attend our Encounter Class which is held on Sunday afternoon. This class, led by the pastor, shares with them additional details on our doctrine and other areas of church life at HCBC.

While there is a process in place, it is “hit or miss” and many guests slip through the cracks and are not connected in any way.

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 15

Page 16: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

SUMMARY OF NEEDS/OPPORTUNITIES

• A detailed welcome plan meets guests at all points of interaction• A single Welcome Center location that will be “home base” for all information and

direction• A “new” New Member process that will provide information about Harris Creek, but

also explain areas and opportunities for service.

MINISTRY PLANS

Key Result Area 1: Develop and implement a “Welcome, Connect and Serve” center at Harris Creek by January 31, 2009 that will serve as the center point of guest welcome, ministry connection, small group integration and service/event registration. The following components need to be considered:

• A team of volunteers will need to be trained in our philosophy of welcome• Appropriate information will need to available at all times at the welcome center• Proper coordination between greeters and the welcome desk will need to be

established• Teachers and Sunday morning leaders will need to be in their classrooms before the

published start times

Key Result Area 2: Combine the best aspects of Connections and Encounter into a single process on Sunday mornings beginning in January, 2009. This process would include a “Four Week Pathway to Membership” at Harris Creek. This will provide an entry point for people any given week with the objective being church membership at the end of attending the four segments.

• The weekly topics will be include:o Church History/Background/Leadership Structureo HCBC Doctrineo Mission/Vision/Values of the Churcho Equip/Connect/Serve – Life Groups and Next Steps

• At the end of the “Four Week Pathway, “the attendees are connected with a pastor to discuss any further items or questions. This is also a time for the pastor to evaluate their salvation and/or baptism experience.

• Once per quarter, the new members are invited to a “Dinner with the Pastors” to help them connect with church leadership.

EVALUATION

Evaluation of the plan implementation, activities and results will be reviewed quarterly with church leadership and with ministry team leaders. Overall progress will be reported to the church in Ministry Plan updates.

SUMMARY

Making guests feel welcome at our church is serious business. Research shows that guests make up their minds about a particular congregation within minutes of arriving. A professor from Biola University, Gary NcIntosh, says, “We must get ready for company. Company’s coming to our church every Sunday, and what visitors perceive in our welcome will influence their feelings and response to church and the Lord for years to come.” Creating and perpetuating an environment of welcome requires all of us to do our parts.

GLOBAL IMPACT/MISSIONS MINSTRY

MINISTRY PURPOSE STATEMENT

The purpose of the Harris Creek Baptist Church global impact/mission ministry is to catalyze the vision, “seeking the welfare of the city” through large service oriented events and opportunities, as well as building strategic partnerships for further service to the world.

INTRODUCTON

This ministry department will primarily promote opportunities to serve the world, as scripture says, “seeking the shalom” for the places where we live and work, (Jeremiah 29:4-11). Through medium and larger sized mission events, the mission ministry seeks to catalyze the faith of believers at Harris Creek Baptist Church through exposure to seeking the welfare of those who live in our city. Mission also means empowering those who are sent out from our midst to fulfill that vision in their location. Empowering believers to build relationships where they live will lead to opportunities to develop strategic partnerships in various locations; in our city, region and throughout the world. Participating in the Kingdom of God, means seeing God at work and joining Him. As God begins to work in and through believers at HCBC, this will give us clear direction on his will for HCBC in seeking the welfare of our city.

Traditional mission’s ministry is often set up as gatekeepers to dollars rather than as catalyst for empowering every person to find their gifts and use them in participation within the Kingdom of God. This is a reactive rather than a proactive . To be proactive is to reflect on where God has placed opportunities in our midst and then plan and resource those opportunities. Several of our best opportunities are listed below in the situational analysis.

SITUATIONAL ANALYLSIS

To date the purpose of the mission assist team and the mission ministry at HCBC has lacked clear direction. Though led by a highly motivated team, it has not been a central feature of our church, and often can’t discern where to work and where to wait when faced with opportunities. What opportunities should we pursue? What is the overall strategy? These questions have hindered the work, and even bimonthly oversight has dwindled due to lack of pastoral oversight. The events which we have participated in have been led outside of the missions area. This leads to double dipping on volunteers and other resources. Various other interest groups lead mission opportunities without bringing them to the missions department for coordination and planning. The focus on overseas outreach and mission has been reduced as well.

Several recent events have presented themselves as things that God is working in and these pose the best opportunities for this coming year. These include: Sharefest, Toy Store, Men’s Mexico mission trip and four families in international missions. The excitement and participation in these events have increased with little hands on direction or coordination.

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 18

SUMMARY OF NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

What Harris Creek needs is a solid plan for three large group, short term events, and the development of a process for understanding future opportunities. In addition to these strategies, we need to plan and implement an overseas strategy based upon our strategic partnerships. The mission assist team needs a minimum of three solid team members with coordinated budgets and plans. The goal would be to obtain 50% participation of members and attendees in one of our global impact activities.

SUMMARY

Global impact ministry will be well served to focus efforts and develop coordination with other ministry areas. The events planned have been enthusiastically supported and have had significant impact on our city, our region and with our strategic partnerships, around the world. This focus needs to be communicated throughout church in such a way as to mobilize volunteers and engage the community.

The worship and media ministry exists to create an atmosphere of respect and awe for God any time two or more are gathered in Jesus’ name. Worship experiences at Harris Creek are to be contemplative and inspiring, communicating the vision of the church and equipping the body of Christ to go and serve their families, their city, and the world.

INTRODUCTON

Worship can generally be described as a response to God for what He is doing and for what He has done in our lives. Our response may be individual (i.e., personal Bible study, journaling, prayer, fasting, etc.) or corporate (congregational singing, fellowship, corporate prayer, etc.).

All of the different facets of worship are to be emphasized at Harris Creek. We believe that our corporate worship times will thrive as the congregation and leadership unite their hearts in personal devotion to Jesus Christ during life outside of corporate gathering. During weekly corporate gatherings, we as leadership will strive with intentionality to cultivate an atmosphere for the Holy Spirit to move in our hearts.

Harris Creek’s worship and media ministry focuses on bringing glory to God in creative and meaningful ways. Artistry is a way God gives unique gifts to His people so that they in turn can glorify Him! When people are given an avenue to use their gifts, they experience worship in a whole new way. It is our mission to seek out and develop the gifts of artistry God has placed at Harris Creek Baptist Church.

SITUATIONAL ANALYLSIS

God has been and will continue doing great things in our midst as we continue to seek His will for the church. Musically, there are numerous volunteers that are extremely gifted and talented, with true hearts for worship as well. We have a large amount of musicians involved in rotations on a week-to-week basis. It is important to note that worship can be done outside of the realm of music too! This is an area we could improve upon at HCBC.

1. Media Arts (video and graphic production) We have an opportunity to use culturally relevant media and video to enhance our services. We also have the opportunity to enhance our website and promotional materials. This will encourage the flow of communication and will help define a distinct image and consistent message for/from our church.

2. Visual Arts (painting, graphic design, decorations). A great way to create texture and meaning in our worship times is to use images, candles, etc. Through more incorporation of imagery and artistry, we will begin to involve more individuals who are gifted in those areas.

Page 22: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

3. Service TimelinessIt is vitally important that we start services on time. This is an area that needs much improvement. Members of the congregation have been conditioned to arrive late to services simply because the services have always started late. As we look to the future, we will vow as leadership to be good stewards of the time allotted for services and start and end them within their respective time frames. This will also depend upon cooperation of congregants as well.

4. Artistic DevelopmentWe have an opportunity at Harris Creek to develop artistic gifts and talents. One way in which we have done this well is in the Children’s music ministry. Children are given opportunities to develop a love for music and develop their talents. As a church, we should be interested in developing gifts across the age spectrum, from young to old. This is an area we will focus on in the coming year(s).

SUMMARY OF NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

A contemplative and awe inspiring worship and media ministry must include:• Committed volunteers to be involved in music, art, video, sound, etc.

• Incorporation of leaders (this will include the use of children and youth throughout the year) in congregation to lead scripture readings, pray, etc.

• Incorporation of tradition as part of services (i.e., Nicene Creed, Doxology, Communion, etc.)

• Engaging of the senses (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste)

• Feedback from congregation (ask them questions throughout the year)

• Teachers and helpers for the Children’s choirs

• Planning and implementation of new ideas in corporate worship services

• Prayer for leadership involved in leading worship services

• Expansion of ministry opportunities in the community

MINISTRY PLAN

Loving God

Key Result Area 1: Inspire all that gather on Sunday to love God by worshipping in meaningful ways. This will be achieved by:

• Teaching of the WordHCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 22

Page 23: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

• Emphasis on the importance of prayer/ the use of prayer in each service

• Theologically sound hymns and contemporary songs

• Emphasis on scripture

• Time for self evaluation and introspection

• Well thought out and executed worship times

• Importance placed on doctrinal belief (Creeds, Doxology, etc.)

• Acknowledgement of the Holy Spirit—allowing the Spirit to move

• Use of media to enhance worship experiences

• Importance placed on Communion and Baptism

To improve service timeliness, there will have to be an effort on our part to start the service consistently on time every single week, in both services. The countdown timer will help in trying to achieve this.

Key Result Area 2: Use special service times to invoke a deep sense of meaning and tradition. These types of services include: Easter service (celebratory service), Good Friday (highly contemplative service), and Christmas Eve (celebratory service). In these services people will attend who are not regular church attenders. This is a great opportunity to reach the un-churched and also create new perspectives and meaning for those highly involved in the church. These services must be planned out more than just a week in advance to be fully effective. Include different and creative ideas as part of each service. Don’t settle for “what we did last year.”

Loving Others

Key Result Area 3: Establish Harris Creek Arts Academy in the Fall 2009. Its purpose will be to teach and mentor students as well as adults in the areas of the Arts (music, dance, visual art, drama, etc.). Initially, it will be used as a tool for our church community. The vision of the program is to expand it to reach a demographic that would otherwise never have the opportunity to receive any special artistic training. The Arts academy will develop and grow according to the shaping and vision of volunteers and teachers. The program’s success will depend on those volunteers and teachers who are gifted to share their artistry and love with all that are mentored. The academy will be placed under the vision of Sharefest.

Objectives of Arts Academy:• To enhance and develop artistic gifts and abilities of students

• Develop true hearts for worship through instruction

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 23

Page 24: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

• Educate students on the importance of the arts in worship

• To be an outreach tool to the community

• To be a unique way to share Christ with the lost

• Add to the incorporation of art in worship services

• Provide service opportunities to gifted artists

Key Result Area 4: Create a second worship team and technical staff that will be able to be used in areas outside of Sunday morning worship. This may include: Second Campus services, College services, Youth services, etc. Begin to seek out prospects now and begin to develop and train team members. Include those already involved in worship ministry, but also find new people to plug in. Be diligent to follow up with people as they show interest in wanting to serve.

Key Result Area 5: Achieve a specific “Harris Creek Look” by ensuring every piece of promotional material that is sent out is done with excellence. Communication flow will be streamlined so that every piece sent (via flyers, mail, website, etc.) has purpose and congruence. Work will begin immediately with early 2009 execution.

Keep a constant eye on the website. Leave time to give volunteers time to make quality videos, etc. Find specific people to serve in this area along with those already serving. Keep all files that have been created to be used at the imagine banquet. Give the promotions team time to work on projects—at least a month in advance on everything. Meet with the team regularly to be the liaison between staff and promotions.

Serving the World

Key Result Area 6: As mentioned above, the Arts Academy will be a part of Sharefest. With a successful Harris Creek Arts Academy, we will be able to reach out to the city through the avenue of the arts.

EVALUATION

Specific Ways Success Will Be Measured:• Number of members involved in a form of service at HCBC

• Number of baptisms throughout the year

• Involvement of members during community fellowship times

• Discipleship and Mentorship

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 24

Page 25: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

• Church Growth

• Noticeable life change

• Tithes and Offerings

• Number of outreach events

• Success of outreach events

There will be weekly evaluations of services by the entire staff. These evaluations will cover connection, mobilization, execution of corporate worship times, etc. Also, groups of people will gather to discuss ways to enhance special services and times throughout the year. Lastly, an elder will work alongside the worship ministry to insure its success, along with a bi-annual report to the elders as a whole.

SUMMARY

We are in the process of implementing new and exciting plans that will seek the welfare of our city throughout the coming year. These plans must rely on the service of the church body, as well as superior execution by church leadership.

As our church becomes the “hands and feet” of Christ during the week, we will see the fruit of our labor as we gather together as a congregation during our corporate worship times. As the song says: “Greater things have yet to come, and greater things are still to be done”! May we rely on the Lord Jesus Christ and his provision as we look to the upcoming year. God is doing great things and will continue to do them as we seek his will for our lives.

ADULT EQUIPPING MINISTRY

MINISTRY PURPOSE STATEMENT

Harris Creek Adult Equipping Ministry seeks to disciple adults from their post student years to and through Senior Adulthood to love God passionately, love others unconditionally, and serve the world energetically. It is our desire that we participate in biblical community in all stages and areas of our Christian life.

INTRODUCTION

The clear mandate of Jesus’ Great Commission is to make disciples. This is the Master’s business that we are to be about. Yet for many North American churches, the Great Commission has become the Great Ommission. As Dallas Willard puts it, “Non-discipleship is the big elephant in the living room that is wreaking havoc and destruction in the church.”

At Harris Creek, it is our desire to be faithful to Christ’s delegated mission by communicating the pathway of discipleship clearly and making it more accessible and intentional. It is also our desire to begin this process early, with our children, but not to forget that the many stages of life provide different equipping needs and opportunities.

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

There are many bits and pieces of discipling going on at Harris Creek, but what is lacking is a cohesive discipleship path that is clearly understood and consistently articulated. God is still at work and people are growing spiritually but the church’s role in facilitating a path to maturity might be best described as fuzzy and inconsistent.

Life Groups – During the past year, Life Group “Small Groups” have been formed, offering opportunities for our members to live and experience biblical community. Currently, more than fifteen groups exist, across multiple demographics. Strengths

• For the most part, the congregation is definitely open to the small group processes and are willing to proceed in that direction

• Newer folks who have plugged into a Life Group connect and feel "at home" faster than under the old format

• Relationally, people are experiencing an increase in depth and authenticityWeaknesses

• Frustration from some members who, although they love their Life group, feel disconnected from some of the relationships they had under the Sunday School format

• process from “door to group” has not been effectively executed• Leader training that effectively takes groups from “gatherings” to true community

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 26

Page 27: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

Opportunities• To continue to engage membership not committed to life groups of their value and

importance in biblical community• To train life group leaders in making the transition from “teaching to leading”• To convert small groups into servant groups who help “Seek the welfare of the city”• To insure that we do not neglect corporate fellowship opportunities between life

groups and within the total church congregationThreats

• Complacency within groups – “developing a singular focus”• Lack of growth strategy leads to developmental stagnation• Curriculum oversight and review with multiple groups

Educational Equipping – HCBC believes that providing a strong underpinning of biblical truths is essential to developing strong believers. Currently, in-depth bible teaching occurs in a few formats at different times:

• Sunday morning pastor sermons• Wednesday evening teaching series from the pastor – “The Well”• Sunday morning bible study – the Harvesters Class• Sunday morning bible study – One Equipping Class• Women’s Bible Study – One weekday class and one evening class

The move to small groups from a traditional Sunday School model had some bright spots but had some difficult periods as well. While the idea of providing service opportunities on Sunday morning is critical, there still are not as many options available to engage everyone in an area of strength and gifting. In addition, some members who are not serving on Sunday morning and some visitors who are not in the Connections class desire a place for the “second hour” on Sunday morning.

Women’s Ministry – Women’s ministry at HCBC has a strong background. The group has a strong organizational team made up of:

• Women’s Ministry Coordinator – worked with the individual teams and the Children’s Minister to coordinate and oversee women’s ministry activities

• Bible Study Team – developed strong curriculum for weekly bible students that meets at two times – one during the day and one at night.

• Service Team – connected with several local Christian organizations (i.e. Christian Women’s Job Corp) to provide assistance.

• Special Event Team – coordinated fellowship activities as well as a women’s retreat every other year.

Men’s Ministry – Men’s ministry at HCBC has been involved in other activities and not truly been a coordinated ministry. The men’s construction team, Mexico missions project and others have engaged HCBC men in Christian service, but under the banner of other ministry plans. A real opportunity exists to provide greater connection, equipping and prayer time with the men of HCBC.

Page 28: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

In both Women’s Ministry and Men’s Ministry a desire to see it expand into a broader demographic through effective mentoring programs exists. The opportunity to disciple the next generation is a key part of biblical community.

SUMMARY OF NEEDS/OPPORTUNITIES

• A detailed, over-arching equipping plan for adults that takes into account:o Actual life stage o Christian life stageo Gender

• Coordinated plan for life groupso Training and leadership developmento Multiplication modelo Curriculum options

• Sunday morning equipping plano Classes & Connections

• Women’s and Men’s Ministry developing effective mentoring models• Men’s Ministry development of prayer and equipping

MINISTRY PLAN

Loving God

Key Result Area 1: Complete an over-arching equipping model for adults that clearly articulates “What a disciple looks like” by the Fall of 2009. Portions of the plan may be implemented sooner. This equipping plan will be implemented into all key areas including life groups, Sunday morning bible study, Wednesday bible study, women’s ministry and men’s ministry. The equipping plan will integrate bible teaching, supplemental biblical curriculum, mentoring programs, available seminars and small group studies aimed at building disciples.

A new satellite system connection with CCN is available and will be used to “import” well-known speakers and key topics of interest across all ministry areas. This program offers over 100 events annually that will be available to us for a small annual fee.

Key Result Area 2: Beginning in the first quarter of 2009, expand our Sunday morning bible study offerings to include two “all church” teaching options that are not topical, but focused on theological teaching. Current ideas for topics include Old Testament Survey, New Testament Survey and in-depth studies on books of the Bible.

Page 29: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

Loving Others

Key Result Area 3: Develop excellence in our small group program in the following areas: • Leader training – conduct quarterly leader training meetings beginning in January,

2009 that focuses on building community, developing a servant mentality and identifying key needs in the group. 100% participation of small group leaders is expected.

• Leader identification – identify at least five new team leaders to be placed in a leader training program for future groups by the end of February 2009.

• Provide an annual curriculum plan that “pre-approves” options for groups based upon their demographics and needs. This library of small group tools will not be used equally by all groups, but will provide ideas and options based upon the current group dynamics and needs. This library will be fluid, but will be in place by the end of the first quarter of 2009.

• Provide two church-wide group studies during 2009 that connects all life groups with pastoral “pulpit teaching” behind a common topic. The two topics will be:

o Generous Living – a church-wide personal and financial stewardship program designed for six weeks in the fall.

o Prayer – a church-wide focus on prayer designed for a two week program kicking off the ministry season in September 2009.

Key Result Area 4: Begin a scheduled Men’s Ministry prayer and fellowship time at least once per quarter beginning with a Super Bowl Breakfast in January. These meetings will incorporate teachings from the pastoral team on biblical manhood and items facing young men, fathers and older men in today’s world. The goal will be to have at least 50% of HCBC men, participating in these events on Friday mornings for breakfast once per quarter. The ultimate goal is that this “Man to Man” group will be to disciple, create accountability, prayer and mentoring groups within our Adult male church population.

Key Result Area 5: Beginning in the Fall 2009, in both Women’s and Men’s Ministries, launch a mentoring program. This program will be coordinated between ministries, but will focus on effective ways to disciple the next generation. The goal will be to have a minimum of twenty five mentoring relationships by the end of 2009.

Serving the World

Key Result Area 6: Execute frequent group fellowship events that are multi-dimensional - including areas of community, Global Impact and outreach where possible. During our key fellowship events in 2009, areas of community and global service will be identified and addressed. Some of these key areas will be:

• February Chili Cook Off with submissions by each life group. It will be required that each life group select an approved Global Impact partner of HCBC to help inform and support

• April Easter Welcome – will coordinate a big welcoming atmosphere to our members and guests

• Sharefest – Outreach in May

• HCBC Community Movie Night – church-wide fellowship activities in May• Celebrate Community – in September, we are planning a church-wide Sunday

afternoon at the Lake with fellowship, small group fall kick-offs, welcome back college students and other all church activities.

• Fall Family Festival – Outreach event with our “Trunk or Treat” program• Imagine Banquet – the December 2009 banquet will include our 2010 ministry plans

as well as an overview of 2008 results• Christmas Eve Service

EVALUATION

Evaluation of the plan implementation, activities and results will be reviewed quarterly with church leadership and with ministry team leaders. Significant input will be encouraged and received from many different sources since this plan involves multiple areas. Overall progress will be reported to the church in Ministry Plan updates.

SUMMARY

Discipleship and biblical community are two things that we hold very dear. We believe that we must be intentional about building disciples, not programs. We also believe that we need to create and cultivate deep Christian community, not just simply “hanging out” with each other. These principles lead us to constantly ask, “Is that event or program helping us develop disciples and/or build community.” If it does, we want to do it well. If it does not, we do not want to do it.

CHILDREN & FAMILY MINISTRY

MINISTRY PURPOSE STATEMENT

Harris Creek Children and Family Ministry seeks to assist parents in effectively discipling children by teaching them to love God passionately, love others unconditionally, and serve the world energetically. This discipleship process will continue as the children exhibit these characteristics and are ready for the Middle School Ministry.

INTRODUCTON

“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’” Matthew 19:14. There was never a time when Jesus turned children away. He always welcomed and included them in His ministry. Just as Jesus was concerned with children, so should we be. The church is to be a place where children are welcomed and trained in the truths of the Bible.

We recognize that faith commitments are made early – most people decide by the age of 13 whether or not they will follow Christ (George Barna Research Group). We want to provide an environment in which children are safe, are taught at an age-appropriate level, and are encouraged to develop a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.

Parents are the #1 faith-developer of their children, so the Family Ministry at Harris Creek desires to be a supplement to parents in what their children are learning. We want to help them become better parents and better teachers of their children.

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

The Children’s Ministry at Harris Creek is divided into several areas.

1. Preschool. The Preschool consists of babies through kindergarten. The kids in the preschool classes stay in their rooms the entire time they are at church on Sunday morning. Our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten kids combine the second hour for Children’s Worship. During the first hour on Sundays, our preschool classes are staffed by full-time teachers. Currently, we do not have a full complement of full time teachers at 10:30 and need additional teachers at that hour. On average, we care for 60-65 children each weekend in our preschool department.

2. Children. The Children’s Department consists of 1st through 6th graders. These children attend corporate Worship one hour with their parents and attend KidZone Bible Study the other hour. Our 10:30 Bible Study hour is much larger than our 9:00 Bible Study hour. Due to the number of children who attend Bible Study at 10:30, two additional teachers are needed. On average, there are 70-80 children in the grade school department each weekend.

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 31

Page 32: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

3. Equipping/Curriculum. Our preschool and 1st – 3rd Graders use Hands-On Curriculum by Group Publishing. Hands-On Bible Curriculum helps kids explore life issues and then apply them to Bible truths. One-point Bible learning helps kids remember Bible truths and apply them to their lives. The children respond very well to it and the teachers enjoy teaching it.

Our three year old class at 10:30 is going through Willow Creek’s “In the Beginning: Jumping into God’s Story” curriculum. Through creative response-oriented teaching, singing, visuals, motions, and more, the kids are actively engaged each week while developing the spiritual foundation they need in order to enter into a relationship with Jesus.

4th-6th graders use Children Desiring God Curriculum. Each lesson focuses on the magnificent character of the One who can satisfy all our longings. Showing children the greatness of God gives them a basis to respond to Him. This material presents a great God who is worthy to be admired and imitated.

Not all of the curriculum is currently meeting our needs and will need to be reviewed as we move forward.

4. Wednesday Night. Our Wednesday night classes consist of multiple programs.

Preschool Play Time: A time for our babies through three year olds to play, sing, read books. We have between 15 and 20 kids in Preschool Play Time each Wednesday and currently need more adult volunteers.

Choir: For all kids, pre-k through 6th grade. They sing in corporate worship four times a year and the older choir (1st-6th grade) sings either one or two musicals a year. We have 60 to 65 kids in our three choirs each week.

TeamKID: A fun, high-energy ministry that encourages kids to know Jesus Christ and grow in a relationship with Him. All parts of TeamKID - Bible stories, Scripture memory, life application, missions, and recreation - connect to teach life lessons to kids. Our TeamKID Ministry has really gotten off the ground this year and has grown to the point of needing three more teachers, one in the pre-k/k group and two in the 1st-3rd

group. We currently have around 50 kids in our TeamKID Ministry.

Bible Drill: The purposes of Bible Drill are to help 4th through 6th graders increase in Bible knowledge, develop skills in locating books of the Bible and Key Passages, memorize Bible verses, and learn how to apply the Bible to their lives. We currently have 17 students in Bible Drill.

5. Special Events Pre-Teen Camp is a time for our 3rd through 6th graders to “get away” to Mt. Lebanon in Cedar Hill, Texas, for a week of Bible Study, Worship, Zip Line, Alpine Tower, Climbing Wall, Swimming, and much more. This week away is a time to build

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 32

Page 33: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

relationships with one another as well as a time to continue to move to the next level in their relationship with Christ. We took 49 students and 10 sponsors to camp in 2008. Five of the students asked Jesus into their hearts.

Backyard Bible Clubs are held each summer at several neighborhood locations. From 7:00 to 9:00 each evening, Harris Creek kids as well as neighborhood kids discover the Bible through stories, crafts, games, food, and music. We had seven locations and 221 kids attend in 2008.

Trunk or Treat is held on the church grounds on October 31st each year. This is a family friendly outreach event in which our surrounding neighborhood can come and “trick or treat” in a safe environment.

The Mission Waco Toy Store allows low-income families in the Waco area to shop with dignity. As a church family, we provide toys, bikes, and games for the store and then we “adopt” the first Saturday in December to staff and work at the store. This is a great experience for our families. We had over 90 adults, youth, and children participate in serving at the Toy Store in 2007.

6. Check In. The check in station is located in the main foyer of Harris Creek. Each Sunday, Wednesday, and on special occasions, children, ages birth through 6th grade, check in at the station and receive a name tag. Parents of preschool children also receive a “parent tag” and parents of our infants receive a pager. The check in procedure is going well, but does get backed up during our busy times. While check in is a task needed to support teaching, it is also a very focused time for greeting and connecting with visitors and guests.

7. Childcare. The following is a list of childcare events (other than Sunday morning & Wednesday evening) that we staff and support:

a. Life Group Fellowship Childcare Nights (once a month)b. Life Group Childcare (every Sunday night)c. Women’s Ministry Eventsd. All Church Fellowship Events

The challenge with childcare is lead time on requests and accurate RSVPs. We need to do a better job of knowing what events need childcare and requiring/receiving RSVPs far enough in advance so we can be good stewards of our childcare resources.

8. Family Ministry. In the Spring of 2008, we taught a parenting class on Wednesday nights at The Well. It was very well received. We have the opportunity to provide more in the way of parenting classes and parenting resources as well as take-home papers so parents know what their children are being taught in Bible Study.

SUMMARY OF NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

1. Serving. We provide meaningful service opportunities for people to serve in the Children/Family Ministry. We need approximately 70 adult volunteers on Sunday

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 33

Page 34: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

mornings and 45 on Wednesday evenings in a variety of roles in the Children’s Ministry. Our goal is to find men and women who would commit to teaching full time. This gives our classes and kids consistency of teaching, long term relationships, and a familiar face with which to associate. In addition, we need to find ways to get more people on campus for both hours on Sunday.

2. Equipping/Training. We have a great opportunity to reach many children for the Kingdom of God through the teaching of God’s Word! We need effective teacher training, greater lead time on ordering curriculum, and more training opportunities which allow for greatest participation. We are currently evaluating all curriculum based on our overarching discipleship plan and will make a decision on curriculum for 2009/2010 by February 2009.

3. Facilities. As the children’s and family ministries grow and larger scale activities begin, we need a grassy play area near the playground, an indoor play room for preschool kids (with MDO in mind), and lights on the playground.

4. Family Ministry. We have the opportunity for parenting training, special events for outreach, and for providing parents some simple “tools” they can use at home to reinforce what their kids are learning at church. In addition, we need to continue to offer opportunities for families to serve together.

5. Childcare. We need to do a better job of organizing events needing childcare to respect volunteers’ time and energy and to keep from being a distraction. We also need to do a better job of requiring/receiving RSVPs far enough in advance in order to be better stewards of our childcare resources.

SUMMARY

Why do Children’s and Family Ministries matter? Because children matter. If you examine what the Scriptures say about children, you will discover how precious they are to Him (a few include: Ps. 127:3, Prov. 22:6, Deut. 6:3-7, Matt. 18:3, Phil. 2:15, Mark 10:13-16). These words from God provide a clear message to us: if children matter that much to God, they should matter to us, too.

The statistics pertaining to children and spiritual life are alarming. Given the trend that most faith commitments are made by age 13, it seems clear that a deep spiritual life demands very strategic and intentional nurturing early in life.

Our goal is to assist parents in effectively discipling their children so that, as they continue to grow and mature and are discipled through the student ministry and adult ministry, they become committed followers and reflections of Jesus.

God has placed each of us here for His plan. It is a privilege to be a part of that plan and to see His children come to love, know, and serve God.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MINISTRY

MINISTRY PURPOSE STATEMENT

Harris Creek Student Ministry seeks to disciple Middle School students effectively by teaching them to love God passionately, love others unconditionally, and serve the world energetically. This stage of the discipleship process will be completed with students who own their faith and are ready for the High School ministry programs.

INTRODUCTON

It is also the student ministry’s goal to create an overarching model which disciples students effectively from 6th grade (with our early integration program called Elev8) through their early adulthood. To do this successfully, we must meet each age group head on with the issues that face their day-to-day lives.

Middle School students are at a transitional point in their lives, and are constantly experiencing the world in new, exciting, and sometimes challenging ways. Their lives are marked by growth, both spiritually and physically. Their brains are moving from concrete ways of thinking to being able to handle more abstract ideas. Spiritually, they are beginning to ask deep faith questions and wanting to experience their relationship with God in new ways. A majority of Middle School students are generally asking questions such as: (1) Is my faith true? (2) How does my faith work in the real world and in today’s culture? (3) How can I experience it?

In order to answer some of the questions Middle School students are asking, Harris Creek’s Student Ministry seeks to provide high impact environments which help connect the dots between the life of faith and the real world. Middle School students generally have a difficult time learning how unconditional love for others fits into their discipleship and worship of God. This is why a key philosophy in our Middle School ministry is to train students in relational evangelism. Students at this age often are fickle in their relationships with others, and it is our goal to help students learn that relationships with others matter to God. It is a goal of this ministry to see students realize that the Good News of Christ’s love cannot be contained by the walls of a church building.

Finally, the job of the student ministry program is to begin integrating 6th grade students into this ministry in order to have a smooth transition from then children’s program into the youth ministry. We seek to provide an environment and culture in which Middle School students can be mentored and cared for during this time in their lives.

SITUATIONAL ANALYLSIS

Current Components: Currently the Middle School Ministry is composed of three primary components. There is Sunday School which occurs at 10:30 am every Sunday morning. Life

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 37

Page 38: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

Groups meet at the church at 4:00 pm on Sunday evenings. Finally, our midweek worship event called Fusion happens weekly on Wednesday nights from 6:00-8:00 pm.

• Sunday School – Middle School Sunday School has generally not been well attended in the past year. We have had willing and able volunteers that serve by teaching these students, but for a number of reasons we have not experienced growth. Currently there are only 2-7 students involved in Sunday School on any given Sunday morning. Part of this may be due to the fact that it takes place during the 10:30 worship time. Another contributing factor is that our Middle School group is small to start with.

• Life Groups – This is the most effective ministry in existence that has been offered to our Middle School students at Harris Creek. Attendance also fluctuates in this ministry, however, with numbers as low as 4 students to upwards of 11 or 12 on good days. Again, we have talented teachers in place that are willing to serve, but it does not appear that this ministry is reaching anything near its maximum potential.

• Fusion – In the past, Middle School and High School students would come together on Wednesday nights for dinner at 6:00 pm and various versions of a midweek worship service. Last year the attendance of Middle School students at this event was not bad, but many of these students have moved into the High School program. We are currently reaching 5 or 6 Middle School students on Wednesday evenings with the Fusion program.

Analysis: There needs to be a complete renovation of the Middle School program in order to produce a critical mass of students once again. Somewhere the church has dropped the baton in the handoff between the Children’s Ministry and the Student Ministry. Due to turnover and a lack of consistency on the part of the church, we have lost a majority of our younger students who are normally the lifeblood of any student ministry.

There are also issues with combining Middle School and High School students for our primary youth programs in that 7th graders are being taught the same lesson that 12th graders are receiving, despite the fact that there is a stark difference between these two age groups. Any programs developed must work to correct three problems and provide solutions that: (1) restore trust in the Student Ministry at Harris Creek from both the students and the parents of students (2) Gain momentum and excitement in order to begin the rebuilding process (3) Be able to create and maintain a critical mass of students that feeds into our Student Ministry programs.

SUMMARY OF NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

In order to succeed at this phase of Harris Creek’s Student Ministry, we must meet a few challenges head on.

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 38

Loving God

Teaching students how to love God with all of their hearts, minds, souls, and strength is a goal of this ministry. We see our needs and opportunities in this area as:

• A need to gain a critical mass of students entering into our student ministry programs.• An opportunity to create an alternative midweek worship service tailored to Middle

School students specifically.• A need to engage Middle School students where they are.

Loving Others

It is a challenge to make students comfortable in their own skin as well as to create environments which is accepting and welcoming. We see our needs and opportunities in this area as:

• A need to restructure and add mass to our current Lifegroup program.• A need to develop leadership consistency amongst our base of students.• An opportunity to funnel students into community groups that focus on welcoming

newcomers and outsiders.• A need to keep track of the discipleship of individual students who are committed to

Harris Creek.

Serving the World

It is our desire to make students aware of the needs both in Waco and the entire world, as well as to create opportunities for students to do something tangible to help. We see our needs and opportunities in this area as:

• A need to create consistent outlets of service for students.• An opportunity to open student’s minds to a world that is hurting.• A need to teach students about how to worship God with their whole lives.

MINISTRY PLAN

The primary goal of the Student Ministries at Harris Creek is to provide an overarching equipping model that disciples students so that they will be ready for the next stage of life. This involves creating programs that successfully integrate students who are at transitional points in life (moving from the Children’s Ministry to the Youth Ministry, moving from Middle School to High School, and moving from High School to College).

Loving God

Key Result Area 1: Integr8 – This is a ministry that occurs every Sunday morning in the Youth Room at 9:00 am. It is the inaugural year for this event and we are hoping to see growth in depth and width out of this program. It is upfront teaching that is discussed with tables separated by age and gender and guided by volunteer table leaders. It is meant to incorporate both community and learning about the Bible.

Objectives:

• To provide tools for youth so that all students can be actively involved in regular personal Bible study.

o By having students breaking down texts by asking and answering questions while being guided by their leaders.

o By providing weekly assignments for students to try and following up with discussion the next week.

o By having students e-mail or text questions throughout the week to the Student Pastor.

• Have Student Ministry leaders provide examples and living testimonies through discipleship and involvement by leading table discussions.

the communities Life Group leaders and other group members contacting students who miss more than 2 weeks in a row.

• Provide opportunities for High School and College students to actively disciple younger students in the Student Ministry by having them lead the Life Groups.

Serving the World

Key Result Area 4: Impact – This is a ministry that occurs once a month and is for students in Middle School and High School. It is for those in Life Groups to reach out and do service projects for people in need in the city of Waco and the surrounding area. A major component of discipleship is serving the world, and having a monthly outlet will allow students to participate in this essential part of the discipleship process.

Objectives:

Special Events

Key Result Area 5: Youth vs. Wild – This is a ministry that occurs once a year on a weekend from Friday night to Sunday morning. In this program, Middle School and High School students are brought together for a discipleship trip that focuses on spiritual disciplines as well as relationships with each other. On this Youth vs. Wild adventure, students are taken on a wilderness excursion that ties in a common theme for the entire trip. It is a trip that is geared towards experiential discipleship and spiritual formation. It is also meant to be an intensive discipleship weekend that incorporates all three elements of being a disciple: loving God, loving others, and serving the world.

Objectives:

• To set aside a discipleship weekend to focus on practicing spiritual disciplines.o By doing Youth vs. Wild this Spring Break.

• To encourage students to have steadfast love and loyalty for their friends as well as their neighbors.

o By getting students outside of Waco with a group of their peers.o By doing group activities that make students dependent on one another.

It is meant to integrate existing students earlier in the transition process to the Student Ministry as well as to provide an opportunity to reach out to students not affiliated with Harris Creek.

Objectives:

• To provide a smooth transition for 6th graders into the youth program by letting the students get to know the youth staff and culture.

o By having these events led and coordinated by both the Children’s and Youth Ministers.

o By having the events in the Youth Room so they can get acclimated to where the youth meet.

• To gain momentum by students inviting in outsiders to this event.o By providing prizes for students that bring the most friends.o By making this a front door ministry that is activity and group oriented.

• To work together with the Children’s Ministry in order to make sure the church is providing an effective discipleship process.

o By having these events led and coordinated by both the Children’s and Youth Ministers.

o By working with the Children’s Ministry to plan these events, thus learning what works with this particular group of students.

o By coordinating our discipleship models and having a seamless plan.

Key Result Area 7: Leadership Retreat/Training – Every summer we will gather all Life Group Leaders along with other Middle School volunteers for a retreat. This retreat will involve vision planning, training, and prayer for the upcoming year. It will happen over the weekend and will be an “offsite” event. • Hold monthly meetings with volunteers on an individual basis to provide support and encouragement.HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 44

Page 45: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

o By requiring meetings after church on Sundays in order to train, discuss issues, and support our leaders.

• Establish a prayer network amongst the church for our volunteers and students involved in the Student Ministry.

o By partnering with the prayer ministry and leaders.o By putting an adult in charge of this specific task.o By creating a database that contains e-mail addresses of those leaders who are

involved in this prayer network.• Hold volunteer appreciation nights.

o By having a volunteer banquet every year in April.

EVALUATION

Evaluation of this ministry will happen in a variety of ways and on many different levels. The process will follow these steps beginning in January of 2009:

• There will be direct accountability of the Student Pastor to both the Executive Pastor and Senior Pastor.

• There will be consistent meetings with the Elders of Harris Creek in order to provide accountability and communication.

• The student ministry will have an Elder Ministry Partner assigned to be a liaison between church leadership and the student ministry.

• There will be follow-up with Integr8 and Lifegroup leaders and students on a monthly basis in the form of surveys.

• There will be face-to-face evaluations immediately following every scheduled event by members of the youth staff in order to monitor the quality of the programs being executed.

SUMMARY

The job of the student ministry program is to begin integrating 6th grade students into this ministry in order to have a smooth transition from then children’s program into the youth ministry. Harris Creek’s Middle School ministry is focused on students in the 6th, 7th and 8th

grade in order to meet them in this transitional phase of life.

We believe that when our plan happens and comes to fruition, we will see the world of Middle School students change in a dramatic way. Students will begin processing what it means to worship God with their whole life. They will also develop relationally with both friends at school and family members at home. In addition to this, they will gain a proper worldview and begin to look outside of themselves and care for the needs of others. Essentially, we will see students becoming the definition of a disciple at the ages of 12, 13, and 14. Too often we have expected far too little out of our Middle School students. This is

a time in their life where they are setting behavioral patterns and learning how to survive socially in the world around them. If our program is supported with all of the needed resources (time, energy, effort, prayers, materials, etc.), we believe that the Middle School students of Harris Creek will be a wave of disciples produced by our church that will change the landscape of the world around us.

HIGH SCHOOL MINISTRY

MINISTRY PURPOSE STATEMENT

Harris Creek Student Ministry seeks to disciple High School students effectively by teaching them to love God passionately, love others unconditionally, and serve the world energetically. This stage of the discipleship process will be completed with students who own their faith and are ready for life after High School.

INTRODUCTON

It is also the student ministry’s goal to create an overarching model which disciples students effectively from 9th grade through their early adulthood. To do this successfully, we must meet each age group head on with the issues that face their day-to-day lives.

Studies show that students who are not involved in some level of a growing relationship with Christ in a faith community are at risk of not being reached for the kingdom of God. In recent years there has been a migration of students who leave their high school ministries and never darken another church’s doors again. Because of these startling statistics and growing trends, it is our focus in the high school ministry at Harris Creek to help create environments which allow students to engage with the Living God in an intimate way.

The pressures that face teenagers today are both real and dangerous threats. Students are susceptible to developing patterns and habits at this age which can last a lifetime. Our goal for the High School ministry is to encourage students to partake in intentional discipleship communities in order to develop and mold students into the likeness of Christ. High School students are caught in a stage of life where they want freedom but still need boundaries. Our job as a student ministry is to provide a place that allows for freedom of choices while also enforces boundaries that are based on truth.

Our main objective in the High School ministry is to train students effectively enough that they develop an intimate relationship with God, a deep love for others, and a heart of service for the world. We want students to own their faith by the time they leave home and to move beyond coming to church because their parents are forcing them to. In order to do this, there must be a spirit of open-mindedness and questioning that takes place under the security of home. Wrestling with deep questions of faith while under the roof of your parents is preferable to doing so in life after high school that removes almost all boundaries. So our most important objective and fervent prayer is that students will come to know God in an intimate way that provides a basis for a life of faith in Jesus Christ.

We also will push students to move outside of their social comfort zones to reach others with the love of Christ. Many High School environments are brutal and support a spirit which mocks that which is not understood. This ministry believes that Christ has called all disciples, young and old, to reach beyond our normal comfort zones to those who are

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 47

Page 48: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

normally outside the acceptable social structures. This type of environment can only be encouraged and maintained in communities which can provide support, rebuke, and advice for students when tough questions arise.

Finally, we want all high school students to develop a proper worldview that challenges them to engage in the world around them. This includes experiencing the tough places both in Waco, the United States, and the world at large. Only students who actually are placed in experiences outside of their comfort zone will be met face to face with the needs which exist around the world. This means that we will encourage High School students to serve others on a daily basis with their lives as an act of worship.

SITUATIONAL ANALYLSIS

Current Components: Currently the High School Ministry is composed of two primary components. There is Sunday School which occurs at 9:00 am every Sunday morning. Our midweek worship event called Fusion happens weekly on Wednesday nights from 6:00-8:00 pm.

• Sunday School – High School Sunday School has generally been well attended in the past year. We have had willing and able volunteers that serve by teaching these students, and we have not lost as many students as we have in the Middle School program. Currently there are only 10-15 students involved in Sunday School on any given Sunday morning. There have been complaints about the structure and support given to teachers at times as well.

• Fusion – In the past, Middle School and High School students would come together on Wednesday nights for dinner at 6:00 pm and various versions of a midweek worship service. Last year the attendance of Middle School students at this event was not bad, but many of these students have moved into the High School program. We are currently reaching 10-12 High School students on Wednesday evenings with the Fusion program.

SUMMARY OF NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

In order to succeed at this phase of Harris Creek’s Student Ministry, we must meet a few challenges head on.

Loving God

Teaching students how to love God with all of their hearts, minds, souls, and strength is a goal of this ministry. This means that students must learn to incorporate aspects of faith into their daily lives and live with a boldness that pushes back against the prevailing culture. We see our needs and opportunities in this area as:

• A need to gain a critical mass of students in our High School student ministry programs.

• An opportunity to create an alternative midweek worship service tailored to High School students specifically.

• A need to engage High School students where they are.

Loving Others

It is a challenge to make students comfortable in their own skin as well as to create environments which is accepting and welcoming. Our goal is to produce students who respect others and love others based on their intrinsic value to the Creator of the universe. We see our needs and opportunities in this area as:

• A need to restructure and add mass to our current Life Group program.• A need to develop leadership consistency amongst our base of students.• An opportunity to funnel students into community groups that focus on welcoming

newcomers and outsiders.• A need to keep track of the discipleship of individual students who are committed to

Harris Creek.

Serving the World

It is our desire to make students aware of the needs both in Waco and the entire world, as well as to create opportunities for students to do something tangible to help. We see our needs and opportunities in this area as:

• A need to create consistent outlets of service for students.• An opportunity to open student’s minds to a world that is hurting.• A need to teach students about how to worship God with their whole lives.• An opportunity to High School students on trips that allow them to experience some of

the hard places in both Waco and throughout the world.

EVALUATION

Evaluation of this ministry will happen in a variety of ways and on many different levels. The process will follow these steps beginning in January of 2009:• There will be direct accountability of the Student Pastor to both the Executive Pastor and

Senior Pastor.• There will be consistent meetings with the Elders of Harris Creek in order to provide

accountability and communication.• The student ministry will have an Elder Ministry Partner assigned to be a liaison between

church leadership and the student ministry.• There will be follow-up with Integr8 and Lifegroup leaders and students on a monthly

basis in the form of surveys. • There will be face to face evaluations immediately following every scheduled event by

members of the youth staff in order to monitor the quality of the programs being executed.

SUMMARY

Because of the startling statistics that show masses of students leaving the church after high school, this program in place is of supreme importance to Harris Creek. It is imperative that students have a deep love for God, truth, other people. It is also important that these students learn how to live out this faith on a daily basis through a life of service.

We believe that if a student walks with our ministries and is involved heavily in the discipleship process, then they will come away with the necessary tools needed to survive in the world post graduation. We also believe that our nation is in need of students who have a deep sense of passion and conviction for God that also know how to live lives of integrity that match up with their beliefs.

Our goals are not small for our high school students at Harris Creek. Our church has a firm conviction that this is the training ground for the next generation of spiritual leaders in our world. We also believe that we have a complete discipleship process that meets the demands and rigors of our increasingly post-Christian world. If there is buy-in from students and parents to this program, we believe that lives will be dramatically altered for the kingdom of God.

COLLEGE MINISTRY

MINISTRY PURPOSE STATEMENT

Harris Creek College Ministry seeks to disciple College students effectively by teaching them to love God passionately, love others unconditionally, and serve the world energetically. This stage of the discipleship process will be completed with students who own their faith and are ready for the next step in life.

INTRODUCTON

College students are a vital part to the life of Harris Creek, and are a large majority of our church. We believe in making disciples at every age and through every phase of life, and this includes college students in the greater Waco area. With nearly 28,000 college students in the Waco area, Harris Creek is committed to meeting the needs of these students while providing outlets to incorporate them into the life of our church.

College students are at a point in life where they are beginning to transition from adolescence to adulthood and are asking questions such as, “What will I be later in life?” One of the main purposes of the College ministry is to provide opportunities for students to explore who they are in Christ and what purpose they have in this life. Helping students discern the call on their life is a major priority of this ministry.

This is also a point in life where students are looking to do something with their faith. Almost every major movement in American Christianity has seen college students play a vital role in it because they are the movers and shakers of society. The College ministry at Harris Creek wants to provide ample opportunities for students to live out their faith as well as offering numerous outlets to serve and get involved. This includes holding impact (missions) events, mission trips, and weekly service opportunities within the life of the church.

Sometimes college students do not have an advocate speaking on their behalf in the life of congregations because they are out on their own. What tends to happen is that many churches see college students as a drain on the church’s resources or as cheap labor to help other departments of the church grow. Our goals at Harris Creek are to value college students’ presence in worship, to reach students in need that desire to be ministered to, and to encourage all students to give back with their unique resources in the same way we urge all members of the congregation of Harris Creek.

SITUATIONAL ANALYLSIS

Current Components: In the past few years the College Ministry has composed of students attending Sunday worship services and getting plugged into Life Groups. There have been a great number of students who attend Harris Creek on Sunday morning, and consequently

HCBC 2009 Annual Ministry Plan Page 57

Page 58: 2009 Ministry Plan & Budget - Harris Creek Baptist Church › downloads › Harris Creek Baptist...• Discipling the Next Generation We Serve the World by: • Strategically Evangelizing

make this their church home during college, yet find it hard to get plugged into the life of the church.

• Life Groups – This is a ministry that occurs weekly at apartments on or around Baylor’s campus. There are currently 3 Life Groups that meet with nearly 50 students involved.

• Adopt-a-student – This is a ministry that connects college students with families at Harris Creek. It currently is successful in that there are 20 students involved. We use a short survey to pair students with families that are compatible.

Analysis: There is an extremely solid foundation built within the college group which already exists. Both adult and student leaders have organized students into small groups as best as possible and there is a base of students who call Harris Creek their home church. However, there has also been a lack of organization that brings together the college students at Harris Creek in order to call it a “College Ministry.” The primary reason for this is that there has not been staff leadership designated for the College Ministry at Harris Creek. The main college ministry we have had is that college students are showing up to our Sunday services. Without a staff member being devoted to the college students, the ministry has lacked direction, vision, and organization.

SUMMARY OF NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

In order to succeed at this phase of Harris Creek’s Student Ministry, we must meet a few challenges head on. Loving God

Teaching college students how to love God with all of their hearts, minds, souls, and strength is a goal of this ministry. We see our needs and opportunities in this area as:

• A need to provide accountability for students in order that they do not slip through the cracks when it comes to church attendance.

• An opportunity to teach students to love God with the way they manage their time, which is a college student’s most precious resource.

• A need to provide environments of worship and teaching that connect students mentally and emotionally with God.

• An opportunity to bring together the students at Harris Creek and implement more structure.

• A need to create a more focused College ministry that cares for the students that have called Harris Creek their home.

• An opportunity to train and equip students by providing a Sunday morning equipping class.

Plugging students into Life Groups is one of the major initiatives of the College Ministry at Harris Creek. Many college students believe that they are time poor individuals, so the challenge is to stress the importance of Life Groups and other community enabling events. We see our needs and opportunities in this area as:

• A need to restructure and add mass to our current Life Group program.• A need to develop a coach to help guide and direct the Life Group leaders.• An opportunity to funnel students into community groups that focus on welcoming

newcomers and outsiders.• A need to keep track of the discipleship of individual students who are committed to

Harris Creek.• A need to expand our church’s influence to MCC and TSTC as well.

Serving the World

Many college students are socially active and want opportunities to get involved. There are a small group of students who need to be encouraged to serve God and others with their time as well. We see our needs and opportunities in this area as:

• A need to provide more opportunities for students to serve that are also higher in quality.• An opportunity to take students on trips that can help educate their worldview.• A need to get students involved in the life of Waco in order for this ministry to truly seek

the welfare of the city.• A need to integrate college students into the service and work of Harris Creek.

MINISTRY PLAN

The world that college students live in is dominated by the belief that there are no longer absolute truths. Faith is something that is becoming more relative and personal in America today. This is why our key ministry to college students will be called Sola. The Latin word sola means “alone” or “only” in English. The five “solas” articulated five fundamental beliefs of the Protestant Reformation, pillars which the Reformers believed to be essentials of the Christian life and practice. These pillars are Sola Scriptura (by Scripture alone), Sola Fide (by faith alone), Sola Gratia (by grace alone), Solus Christus (Christ alone), and Soli Deo Gloria (glory to God alone). The goal of the Harris Creek College Ministry is to hold to the truth claims of historical Christianity while maintaining relevance to the culture at large.

Loving God

Key Result Area 1: Sola – Starting January of 2009, this is a worship event that occurs monthly in on Baylor’s campus. It happens on the first Thursday of every month from
