Chippewa Nickname The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees has approved the continued use of the nickname “Chippewas” in association with CMU. The university’s goals are to use the name with honor and respect, increase supportive connections between CMU and Native Americans and improve efforts to sensitize students, faculty and staff to Native American traditions and cultures. Media representatives have been extremely cooperative as we have worked to address this important issue. In nearly all cases, print and broadcast reporters have supported CMU’s efforts to eliminate the use of symbols, headlines and copy that present inappropriate and inaccurate images of Native Americans. Central Michigan University is grateful for your help, and we ask for your continued cooperation and sensitivity. With your assistance, we can continue to use the Chippewa name with dignity and respect.

Pair Expected to Redshirt – Head coach Erik Olson expects freshmen Danielle Sheridan and Kendra Elsesser to sit out the season as redshirts. Both are members of this year’s nationally ranked freshmen class.

Evers Signs Pro Deal – Whitney Evers, a four-time letterwinner and No. 8 all-time in kills as a Chippewa (1,204), signed a professional volleyball contract to play for KBS Volley in Dudingen, Switzerland. She is just the second volleyball pro in CMU history (Angie Henderson-Montroy, Major Volleyball League).

A Championship Culture On and Off the Floor – The Chippewas have enjoyed a great deal of success the last two seasons, winning a combined 41 matches, but even more impressive is a streak CMU is putting together off the floor. The Chippewas were recognized following the 2008-09 school year for posting a team cumulative grade-point average of higher than 3.30 as part of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award program. This is the third striaght year CMU has been recognized by the AVCA.

New Events Center Approved – The CMU Board of Trustees have approved a $21 million rennovation to Rose Center, scheduled to begin later this fall. The renovations will not impact the current volleyball season, however there will likely be adjustments made to next season’s schedule to accomodate the final stages of the building’s construction.

Trio Head to National Team Tryout – Three members of last year’s squad got the chance of a lifetime, heading out to

Colorado Springs, Colo., to take part in the tryout camp for the USA Women’s National Team in February of 2009. Kaitlyn Schultz, Whitney Evers and Stephanie Budde were among a record 160 athletes vying for spots on several of the USA national team programs.

Big Shoes to Fill – CMU lost more than 3,000 kills off its roster from a season ago, as Kate Fissel (No. 8 all-time with 1,225 kills), Whitney Evers (No. 8, 1,204) and Sarah Warner (979) all completed their careers in the Maroon and Gold.

Closing in on History – Senior libero Alexis Lonneman (1,561 career digs) just missed her third-straight 500-plus dig season in a Chippewa uniform a year ago, and is closing in on the program’s all-time digs record. She sits just 435 shy of the 1,996 digs Ali McCrite (2002-05) piled up in her career.

A Season Full of Honors – In 2008, the CMU volleyball program received high praise from its peers. Head Coach Erik Olson was named the first Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in program history, Kaitlyn Schultz was just the second player in program history to earn MAC Freshman of the Year honors, and Whitney Evers became just the third player in CMU history to earn All-MAC first or second team honors three times during her career with a first-team selection as a senior to go with second-team honors as a sophomore and junior. Setter Stephanie Budde also earned second-team All-MAC honors.

Erik OlsonHead CoachSixth Season

After five seasons at the helm of the Central Michigan volleyball program, head coach Erik Olson has the Chippewas in the midst of the school’s best stretch in over 20 seasons. CMU is 58-34 during the last three campaigns, a stretch that includes the program’s first postseason win since 1982 and its first 20-win season since 1985, as well as the biggest one-year turnaround in Mid-American Conference history. The program’s struggles in the late 1990s seem to be a distant memory, with visions of playing for a MAC title replacing those thoughts. In 2008, Olson was named MAC Coach of the Year after Central just missed posting its second straight 20-win season at 19-11 and earned a bye in the opening round of the MAC Tournament thanks to a 12-4 league mark and second place finish in the West Division. The 12 MAC wins were the most since 1994, when the Chippewas finished 14-3. The 2007 campaign saw CMU take another step forward in its resurgence, posting its first 20-win season since 1985 with a 22-10 overall record. CMU also posted just its second double-digit win MAC season since 1996 with a 10-6 league mark, good enough for second place in the West Division. Central went on to defeat Toledo in the opening round of the MAC Tournament, ending the 24-year postseason victory drought. The Chippewas got off to the best start in program history at 8-0 and posted two eight game winning streaks. Olson guided CMU to a 17-13 overall record in 2006 and the Chippewas finished just below .500 in the conference at 7-9. That 12.5-game improvement in the overall standings, the largest in conference history, came after CMU went 3-24 overall and 0-16 in the league in 2005. In his five seasons, Olson is 68-81 at CMU. Olson began the rebuilding challenge by recruiting and signing some top-notch talent. A pair of his early recruits, Kate Fissel and Whitney Evers, each finished their careers last season as two of 12 players in school history to tally at least 1,000 kills. Freshman Kaitlyn Schultz was named MAC Freshman of the Year in 2008, just the second Chippewa to garner the honor. In all, Olson has mentored three first team All-MAC choices (Fissel in 2007 and Evers and Schultz in 2008) and five second team All-MAC picks. The Chippewas have also had an honoree on the MAC All-Freshman squad each of the past two seasons (Lauren Krupsky in 2007 and Schultz in 2008). Three times during his tenure at CMU, Olson’s recruiting classes have been ranked among the nation’s top-100. Olson has also made academics a priority with CMU earning the GamePlan/American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award in each of the last three years, an award that carries a minimum of a 3.30 team GPA. The volleyball program was also awarded the 2007-08 Dick Enberg Team Leadership Award, recognizing the CMU program which best meets the following five criteria – overall grade point average, academic progress rate, community service, athletic performance and commitment to excellence. CMU announced Olson’s hiring on June 2, 2004 as he became the fourth coach in Chippewa volleyball history.

He came to CMU after helping start the University of Miami program in 2001. He was the Hurricanes’ top assistant for three seasons, helping Miami to a record of 66-22 (.750). Miami reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2002 and finished in the Top 25 poll. Olson’s primary responsibility was mentoring the middle blockers and team blocking. Prior to Miami, Olson was the assistant coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee for one season in 2000. The Panthers went 23-5 and won the Midwestern Collegiate Conference regular season title that year, receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Olson also has extensive high school and club level coaching experience, including working with the USA Volleyball Men’s Junior National Team. The 37-year-old Olson began his coaching career as the founder of the Marquette University (Wis.) High School boys’ program in 1994, where he served as the head coach for three seasons. Olson also spent three seasons as the girls’ varsity coach at Shorewood High School in Shorewood, Wis., from 1997-99. Both stops featured a conference title. From 1995-2001, Olson was head coach of the North Shore Milwaukee Volleyball Club, serving as the co-director from 1998-2001. There he directed all phases of the boys’ Junior Olympic program that was one of the top clubs in the country. He was co-head coach of the Boys’ USA National High Performance Camp in Colorado Springs in 1999 and an assistant coach for the USA Men’s Junior National Team in Lake Placid, N.Y., in 2000. The team won a bronze medal in the NORCECA Championships in Cuba. The Milwaukee native graduated from Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1997. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Panthers and served as team captain in 1995. Upon completion of his career, Olson ranked in the top five in several career statistical categories, including holding the school’s all-time blocks record. In 1991, he was a member of the North Shore Volleyball Club team that won the 19 and under national championship. Erik and his wife, Becky (Stewart), were married in 2002. She was a four-year volleyball letterwinner at Northern Illinois, earning first team All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference honors in 1996 and first team All-MAC and AVCA all-district honors in 1997. The couple have two children, Nathan (three) and Samuel (one). The family resides in Mount Pleasant. In his spare time, Erik enjoys sailing and downhill skiing.

Dave Zelenock Associate Head CoachThird Season

After spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan, Dave Zelenock was promoted to associate head coach in the spring of 2009. “Dave has a great eye for talent in recruiting and has done a great job of evaluating potential student-athletes and getting them onto campus,” head coach Erik Olson said when announcing the move. “He has the experience and knowledge that has helped elevate our program in the last few seasons.” Zelenock’s responsibilities include acting as the program’s recruiting coordinator and future opponent scouting. In the gym, he is in charge of outside hitter development/training, as well as setter training. His scouting abilities helped CMU to its first 20-win season since 1985 and first postseason victory since 1982 in 2007. He is also in charge of the blocking and defensive schemes Central utilizes during match play. The Chippewas’ defense improved from 11th in the Mid-American Conference in 2007 to fifth in 2008. “Dave helps run the program with the same intensity that I do, and I think that’s a key part of being an associate head coach,” Olson said. In 2008, the Chippewas posted their second straight second-place finish in the MAC West Division and missed their second straight 20-win season by the slimmest of margins (19-11). Opposite hitter Whitney Evers earned first team All-MAC accolades and setter Stephanie Budde earned second team All-MAC honors under his tutelage. During the 2007 season, the Chippewas held opponents under 20 points on 20 occasions and won 20 straight sets over the course of eight matches midway through the season. Each of CMU’s recruiting classes have been ranked in the nation’s top-95 since Zelenock joined the program. Before coming back to his alma mater, Zelenock spent the previous three seasons coaching at both the Division I and Division II levels. In 2006 he was an assistant at Delaware State, helping the Hornets to an 11-22 finish and a 6-5 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. At Northwood, Zelenock was a part of two highly successful seasons in 2004 and 2005. The Timberwolves went 21-10 in 2004, earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament and a final national ranking of 18th. In 2005, Northwood went 23-11, finishing second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference behind eventual national champion Grand Valley State. Zelenock was also heavily involved in coaching while a student at CMU. He was the varsity coach for the Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy girls’ volleyball team from 2001-03. Zelenock also coached the CMU women’s club volleyball team in 2005, leading the Chippewas to a 42-2 record and a fifth-place national finish. During his time at CMU, Zelenock was a four-year starter for the men’s club volleyball team. He served as captain for three seasons, club president for two years and was a coach for two years. Zelenock earned his bachelor’s degree from CMU in 2005 while majoring in physical education and minoring in secondary physical science. He graduated from Port Huron Northern High School in 2000.

Bethany MartinAssistant CoachFirst Season

Bethany Martin enters her first season as an assistant coach with the Central Michigan volleyball program. During her time as an undergraduate, she worked four seasons as a camp counselor for the Wisconsin PoWer Volleyball Club and two for the Gardner-Webb Volleyball Team Camp. She also spent two seasons as the summer league coach for Beaver Dam High School near her home in Wisconsin. Martin was a four-year letterwinner for Gardner-Webb as the team’s middle blocker and holds the school’s record for career blocks. She is also just the third player in the school’s Division I history to break the 1,000-kill mark (1,060). “Bethany will have responsibilities in off-campus recruiting, team travel and practice video editing,” Olson said. “Her work ethic and the ability to get things done are real strengths and will help our program reach new heights.” Martin attended Gardner-Webb University, where she earned a degree in health and wellness in 2009.

Emily CarleVolunteer Coach First Season

Emily Carle joins the Central Michigan volleyball team’s coaching staff for her first season as a volunteer assistant coach. Carle comes to Mount Pleasant from Nova Southeastern University, where she earned a degree in marketing and spent four seasons as the starting middle blocker. She helped the program to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007, and guided the team to an Elite Eight finish in 2008. She was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-South Region Team as well as an honorable mention AVCA Division II All-American. “Emily will serve as our staff’s video and statistical coordinator and will also have some office recruiting duties,” Olson said. “The passion and excitement she brings to the staff and the gym are what we were looking for from that position.” The Texas native also piled up over 1,000 career kills and set a school record with 273 block assists her senior year. Carle spent three seasons with the Boomers Volleyball Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in addition to a single season with the Texas Tornadoes and AVA of Texas Volleyball clubs.
