Another exciting and challenging year has passed at Germanna Community College. Germanna’s ongoing growth continued, with enrollment rising by 10%. While this rate is slower than last year, it still means that we will double in size every 11 years. Our new Stafford Center saw an enrollment of over 1200 students and our commencement ceremony filled the Fredericksburg Expo Center to overflow.

In spite of ongoing cuts in state appropriations, we were able to expand our program offerings by adding an engineering technology program, an early childhood education program, and a LPN to RN Hybrid program. Because the national economy has hurt so many of our neighbors, Germanna will continue to try to meet the workforce and educational needs of those who planned on attending as well as the many whose life circumstances have sent them back to school.

Our Educational Foundation continues to support the college with scholarships, support for programs, financial assistance for students, monies for facilities and for cultural and academic activities and events. Included in this report is a summary of its successes.

This report provides one method of accountability to you, our stakeholders. It also highlights some of the successes and accomplishments of the college, its students, faculty, staff and volunteers over the past year. I hope that you find it as informative and inspiring as I do.

Sincerely,

Dr. David A. Sam, President

“We promise that, no matter what happens, we will try to meet the needs of our area’s students, parents and businesses.”

-Dr. David Sam

Middle College Receives Grant AwardThe Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region awarded Middle College a $5000 grant on Nov. 23, 2009. Middle College allows individuals without a high school diploma to increase their income and employability by simultaneously pursuing a GED, community college education, and a workforce certifica-tion in a college environment at no cost to the student.

“Many of our students felt that col-lege was out of their reach until they enrolled in this program. For many, they are first generation college students and in some cases the first to complete a high school creden-tial. This program shows students that with a college education, their chance for success increases greatly. With the support of the CFRRR, we can continue to show these young adults that Middle College is a good first step in achieving their goals for a brighter future and continuing on to Germanna can take them even further. ” -Carolyn Bynum

Germanna Project will be a Win-WinProject Win-Win seeks to award degrees to people who already qualify for an associate degree but never received a degree of any kind. It also seeks to identify people who need nine credits or fewer to earn an associate degree, which community colleges award.

The goal is to encourage former students to finish their degrees and to help Virginians with college credits but no degree, to obtain one.

The program is funded by the Lumina Foundation for Education, a private foundation based in Indianapolis. The program began as a pilot at nine locations across the nation during the 2009-10 school year.

The program is now expanding to include 35 institutions. In Virginia, that includes these community colleges: Germanna, New River, Northern Virginia, Tidewater, Thomas Nelson and Virginia Western.

The Faces of GermannaStudent AmbassadorErica Hodge, a Germanna nursing student, was concerned she’d have to drop out of school one semester short of earning her associate’s degree and becoming an LPN.

But the Germanna Guarantee Program paid for her tuition and books for the Spring of 2010. This program fills in the gaps for students with financial need who can’t get aid from other sources.

“I wasn’t eligible for any grants or scholarships based on my husband’s income level,” she said.

“They didn’t factor in that my hus-band’s hours were cut. The Educa-tional Foundation listened to my story. I was shocked, ecstatic and very grateful. It covered everything. That was a huge weight off my shoulders.”

Mike Catell, Director of the Educational Foundation, was so impressed with Hodge that he asked her to become a student ambassador for the Guarantee Program. “Erica’s determination and drive exemplify what the program is all about”.

Phi Theta Kappa 2010 All-Virginia Academic TeamVirginia is one of 38 states participating in the State Academic Team project introduced in 1994 as a way to provide scholastic recognition to Phi Theta Kappa members while promoting excellence at two-year colleges. Students nominated to the national All-USA Academic Team are automatically named to the All-State Academic Teams and are eligible for stipends provided by Coca-Cola. All-State Team members receive special recognition at these ceremonies including medallions and certificates and may include stipends and scholarships.

The All-Virginia Academic Team is designed to provide the same kind of recognition to our college scholars by saluting their academic achievement, leadership and service. Germanna Community College students Rosana Marzullo-Dove and Pamela Petzold are part of the Phi Theta Kappa All-Virginia Academic Team who were honored during the awards luncheon.

Apprenticeship Program Partners with GermannaAfter spending the last six years mak-ing airplane parts at Euro-Composite in Culpeper, 29-year-old Doug Bray saw a chance to advance his career when the company began an appren-ticeship program in partnership with Germanna Community College. The program opened the door to an as-sociate’s degree and a journeyman’s license in industrial maintenance.

“It was definitely a good opportunity for me” said Bray, “I think it will allow me to look at my job a little different and it’ll help me to excel at what I’m doing”.

The four-year apprenticeship program combines classroom work with on-the-job training at the work site. It’s designed to meet the need for trained industrial maintenance technicians and intended for those who wish to work as maintenance employees or those who have recently been hired as maintenance employees. It also allows current employees to upgrade the skills necessary to support and maintain high-technology equipment.

American Contractor in Iraq taking GCC Classes Online Matthew Strickland, a Germanna student from Spotsylvania, was get-ting closer to earning his associate’s degree online while working for a private contractor providing support for the U.S. effort in Iraq.

“I thank Germanna and its staff very much for allowing those of us who are unable to attend classes on campus the opportunity to further our education. These days especially, it is important to have a high level of education, and a degree is a must in today’s job market.”

GCC Students Visit Richmond to Discuss Budget Issues Germanna students Gabriella Allen, Zachary Schmiedeke, Rosana Marzullo, Jesse Owens, Nichole Young, Tonya Watson, and Chelsea Morin met with Virginia Senators and Delegates, McDougle, Howell, Cole, Stuart, Houck, Peace, and Orrock to discuss budget issues facing students, families, and community colleges.

GCC Student Recipient of a Virginia Education Wizard ScholarshipTwo students have received new Vir-ginia Education Wizard Scholarships, valued at $3,000 each to cover costs related to pursuing an education at Virginia’s Community Colleges.

Recipient Greg Foley was an active member of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, and was among the first responders to the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. Foley is now enrolled at Germanna Community College and plans to complete his associate’s degree be-fore continuing his education at a Vir-ginia university, with a long-term goal of earning a doctorate in psychology.

GCC Alumna Caressa Cameron wins the Miss America PageantMiss America 2010 Caressa Cameron attended Germanna Community College for two years before trans-ferring to Virginia Commonwealth University, where she’s majoring in communications. Caressa, who won a $55,000 scholarship, graduated from Massaponax High School.

GCC Helped Student Excel Academically in Spite of Rare Disorder Devon Geary had to drop out of school as a sophomore at James Monroe High in Fredericksburg since she suffers from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

Some POTS sufferers can’t go to school or work. Devon’s case is com-plicated by Ehler-Danos syndrome, which affects connective tissue between joints and makes movement agonizing.

In 2008, she came to GCC in a wheelchair and earned her GED. The following year she began classes at GCC, using a walker, and frequently fainting. “There was no way I could have gone to a four-year school,” De-von says. “I could barely walk. I could barely stay conscious.”

She thrived on the kind of one on one attention students get from the faculty at Germanna.

She now not only walks on her own, but is an assistant dance instructor. The outcome: nearly a full scholar-ship to Amherst, one of the top liberal arts schools in the country.

With Some Help Single Mom Gets her Life Back on TrackNightline visited Germanna to capture the moment when philanthropist Doris Buffett surprised Aundrea Handy with a scholarship. Aundrea had been homeless before attending GCC’s Middle College. The Middle College program helps high school dropouts get their GEDs and prepares them for college.

Buffett also donated $150,000 to the GCC Educational Foundation’s Germanna Guarantee Scholarship program.

“I thought, ‘These are exactly the people we want to help,’” and “I have a high regard for what Germanna’s doing. They’re into the real world. They’re helping people to a good life through a good education.”

David A. Sam said “Doris Buffett’s mission aligns well with our own--to help our students gain the education that will help them empower them-selves. It is also a model for all of us in giving back to our community.”

Art Students Gain First-Hand ExperienceGermanna art students participated in two art events at the home of col-lectors, and GCC donors, Robert and Tia Cadow. The Cadows together with Legacy Fine Art host a private annual gathering with an international artist in the Fredericksburg Area. They in-vited GCC students to participate and assist with the installation of works to support their learning experiences. Students worked with artist, Fidel Garcia, in November 2009 and artist Yuroz, in September 2010.

Further, the students were given an opportunity to meet and talk with the artist about his work.

Congratulations GCC 40th T-shirt Design WinnersCongratulations to students Ryan Arnett, Natalie Selles, and Rosana Marzullo-Dove for their 40th anniver-sary winning t-shirt designs. Student, Scott Shisler, achieved an honorable mention. Thank you to all students who submitted their concepts.

2010 Commencement James Richardson is a second-gen-eration GCC graduate who said his father’s words inspired him to com-plete his degree despite self-doubt and challenges.

“My father always told me, ‘James, you have to do the hard thing,’” Rich-ardson said May 12th before a crowd of about 2,500.

The 20-year-old Falmouth resident, was the community college’s student speaker at the 2010 commencement ceremony. He spoke of the determi-nation, sacrifice and belief in self that were needed to meet the require-ments for his associate degree.

Steve B. Jones, who earned an associ-ate degree in business management from Germanna in 1979, served as commencement speaker.

He spoke of the need to show respect to people, the importance of a posi-tive attitude each day, and said that honesty and integrity are crucial for success in the business world.

In his message, consistent with the student speaker’s, he said the gradu-ates will need perseverance, especial-ly for those seeking a job in today’s economy. -The Free Lance-Star

PNE Class of 2010The Practical Nursing students ended this academic year with much to celebrate. This combined program is unique in that it consists of three divisions to create one successful certificate of academic study. The traditional GCC students enter into this nursing program in the summer. The Fredericksburg Area School of Practical Nursing students join GCC, after grading from the various high schools, in the month of June. This year the Eastern View High School students joined the GCC class in the spring 2010. The 28 successful graduates are now able to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam to become profes-sional licensed healthcare providers.

Largest Nurse Aide ClassMay 7, 2010 was the completion of the largest class to date for the Nurse Aide Program that was approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing three years ago. The 33 students join the 92 others that have already become a Nurse Aide through this 8 week program which is offered through the GCC Department of Nursing and Health Technologies.

Online Teaching Certification at GermannaSince the summer of 2009, GCC has offered Online Teaching Certification instruction courses for our faculty. For the first year and a half, the course that was offered was a Germanna designed course that led to the faculty members who successfully completed the course to be certified to teach online and hybrid courses for Germanna only. Beginning in the Fall of 2010, GCC has been offering the Teaching Online Program (TOP) course designed by the VCCS distance learning faculty from multiple VCCS colleges. Germanna has added a module containing information specific to GCC and our policies and resources. One of the advantages to offering the TOP course is the ability of successful faculty completers to be eligible to teach online for any VCCS college.

Since 2009, 106 faculty members have become certified to teach online at Germanna through these courses and alternative methods.

Former Gov. Kaine, County Officials Laud Opening of GCC Stafford County Center When Gov. Tim Kaine cut the ribbon to open Germanna’s new Stafford Center on July 29, 2009 he said Vir-ginia is counting on GCC and the rest of the Virginia Community College System to help the Old Dominion re-cover from the recession and to give its workforce an edge going forward.

“Community colleges play an impor-tant role, especially in a challenged economy,” Kaine told a crowd at the opening of the Center.

The fourth Germanna location--which has four state of the art classrooms, computer labs, and office space, was serving about 650 students in 40 different classes when it opened in August 2009.

The Center is a partnership between GCC and the Stafford Economic Development Authority, which has invested $300,000 over three years to promote economic development through Workforce training.

GCC Celebrates 40 years This year Germanna Community College officially turned 40 years old. Although it now has 7,500 students on four campuses, its beginnings were decidedly humble.

“Our first staff meeting was in a cow pasture at Camp Rapidan,” said writ-ing and public speaking professor Harriet Leithiser. They had to meet at the nearby retreat because the school was still under construction.

Even after the school opened in 1970, students and teachers had to share their classrooms with electricians, plumbers and carpenters finishing the school. Leithiser, who is the only original faculty member still teaching at Germanna, said she remembers that some fellow professors would lend a hand with construction after class.

Some of those very students and teachers were once again together at the original Locust Grove cam-pus, celebrating GermannaFest, the school’s 40th anniversary. There was food, music, games and tours.

Dave Rose is a Spotsylvania County resident and a member of the first graduating class in 1972. He came back to Germanna in 1974 to teach automotive technology for eight years. “It has served the community well,” he said. “And it really has con-tributed to the community.”

Barbara Amos of Culpeper County also was in that first graduating class in 1972. She went on to work as a nurse at UVA for 34 years. She credits Germanna for giving her a career and the ability to take care of her family. “I had two children and I was divorced,” she said. “They gave me a wonderful scholarship and I loved every minute of it.”

Dan Ross, now retired, taught math at GCC from 1972 to 2009. “As soon as I came here and saw the location, I knew this is where I wanted to be”.

Dr. David Sam, said that the school will only continue to grow over the next 40 years. “Community colleges are perceived as more important than ever,” Sam said. “They help our citizens to have real jobs for the future.”

Germanna Events

A Message from Dick Scheibe, Chairman

This past year has been one of the most successful in the history of Germanna Community College. Despite adverse economic conditions and severe fiscal constraints, we have seen the college grow and prosper as never before. Enrollment continues to rapidly expand, and, as the college celebrates the 40th anniversary of its founding, its strong leadership, its highly qualified and motivated faculty and staff, and its dynamic learning environment are its essence.Diversity and accessibility of courses and curriculum, tailored to the needs of the communities served, are cornerstones of our mission. Germanna’s syllabus has been expanded, and the Stafford County Center has now joined the Locust Grove Campus, the Fredericksburg Area Campus, and the Daniel Technology Center in Culpeper to better distribute the Germanna learning experience throughout the service area. Through dedicated and coordinated efforts by Germanna’s leadership, the Educational Foundation, area governments, and the College Board, construction of the urgently needed Building 3 at the Fredericksburg Area Campus in Spotsylvania has begun. Through this visionary project, and others in the planning stages, Germanna continues to respond to area educational wants and needs. The prospects for Germanna’s future are unbounded. Community support has played a vital role in the success Germanna has achieved—it is much appreciated. Continued support is critical to realizing current objectives and other new initiatives, and only through a close partnership between Germanna and the community it serves can the college meet and exceed the challenges of the future. Our students represent the future of our community and through them, and their successes, we all benefit and prosper.

Greetings from the Germanna College Board

A Message from Bruce Davis, President

Dear Friends of Germanna,The nation’s economy appears to be making a strong comeback, but as a college and as an educational foundation we are likely to be left with the effects of declining support from the state and federal governments for quite some time. This is where the role of our many friends of Germanna Community College and the Educational Foundation will become crucial. Those institutions which are able to rally the support of their alumni, area businesses and friends so that their progress will not be diminished, particularly in the face of growing enrollment demands, will be the colleges that prosper and succeed in future years. They will be able to combine local funds with state dollars to continue to build new facilities and renovate older ones, and to equip them with modern technology so that their students can be offered a quality education. We want Germanna Community College to continue to be a part of this select group that continues to move forward and prosper. As a college and as an educational foundation, we have enjoyed many successes during the past year. Because of the sustained generosity of many local businesses and individuals, GCC’s Educational Foundation has been able to provide approximately $175,000 in scholarship support to nearly 300 students in 2010.In addition, more than $20,000 has been provided in professional development funding to Germanna’s faculty so they may earn additional degrees and other professional credentials. That amount includes funds given to nurse educators from the Jane R. Ingalls Nurse Educator Fellowship, support for the inaugural President’s Leadership Academy, and for adjunct faculty development. The following are additional updates about important events in the life of the Germanna Community College Educational Foundation that occurred during 2010.Three new members were recruited and appointed to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. They are Kenny Dotson of Orange County, Trish Crowe of Madison County, and Chris Hallberg of Fredericksburg. All three bring many years of leadership and resource development experience to their respective positions. We look forward to working together with them in the years ahead. They succeed three former Board members: Ruthan O’Toole-Scott, Dr. Julianna (Julie) Wilson and Steve Jones. We are grateful to all three for more than 25 years of collective and dedicated service in support of our mission.

Germanna Educational Foundation, Inc.During a special meeting in March, the Foundation Board voted to conduct a “resource development assessment” in partnership with The Clements Group, a higher education consulting firm, to determine how well college leaders, the foundation board, the development office, and community investors are advancing the vision and mission of the college. The Clements Group sought to determine the level of effectiveness using the following four characteristics of the ideal private sector resource development program: - A chief development officer who sees his/her primary role as professional manager of the college’s development function, along with appropriate staff and donor research capabilities to be effective. - A comprehensive institutional advancement plan (with measurable goals) that supports the college’s strategic plan and is considered a college-wide priority under the direction of the chief development officer and endorsed by the foundation board. - A close working relationship based on mutual respect and confidence between the chief development officer and the college president and the foundation board. - An active foundation board composed of people with recognized stature, dedicated to working with the college president, the chief development officer and team in generating awareness, building friends, securing funds and stewarding donors. The Foundation’s 3rd annual board retreat was held September 28 at the Fredericksburg Country Club. Facilitated by The Clements Group, key aspects of advancement operations were discussed and outlined, including general discussion about preparations for a campaign feasibility study preparation. The Board voted to move forward with a feasibility study, to be initiated during the spring semester of 2011. In the area of special events, the 16th annual Monte Carlo event raised more than $90,000, which was a

record-breaking year, thanks to event co-chair Clarissa Berry and her committee. They are hard at work planning the 17th annual casino night, with a goal of raising $100,000 for student financial support. The 2nd annual Distinguished Person of the Year (DPOY) event, under the leadership of Darla Burton, was held in June at Fredericksburg Square. It honored outstanding public servant and community leader, retired state senator John Chichester. Edward V. Allison, community leader and longtime supporter of higher education in the region, was selected as the 2011 DPOY honoree. The Foundation’s annual dinner was held in early November, beginning with a reception for scholarship recipients and benefactors. More than 100 hundred people attended. Doris Buffett, highly respected international philanthropist and resident of Fredericksburg, was our special guest. Doris is a passionate supporter of Germanna, as evidenced by her commitment earlier in the year to provide $150,000 in scholarships over a three-year period. Our student speakers were well-prepared, articulate and inspiring, as always, and immensely grateful for the support they have received from generous benefactors. That same evening we announced that Culpeper Regional Health System and its affiliated organizations has been selected as the 2011 Philanthropist of the Year. The health system has made contributions to Germanna Community College totaling over $500,000 in the past decade. By any measure, 2010 was banner year, due entirely to our many contributors and to the outstanding students, faculty and staff at Germanna Community College. I feel confident that 2011 will be equally momentous, if not more so.Sincerely,Bruce L. Davis, PresidentGermanna Community College Educational Foundation

Overall, the community lost 3,132 pounds. Beginning in January, participants were encouraged to exercise and modify their diets to meet specific health and fitness goals. In return, local businessman Joe Daniel, along with his wife Linda and Culpeper Health System, agreed to donate $50 for every pound participants lost to the Germanna Community College nursing program. Overall, the program raised $156,610. Daniel also announced that he lost 25 pounds himself. About 275 people completed the challenge.

“It’s incredible how much weight our community was able to lose in such a short period of time and the huge impact it will have on our education programs,” said Sandy Boone, director of the Powell Wellness Center.

GCC Dental Hygiene Students Give the Community Something to Smile AboutGermanna Community College Dental Hygiene Students and Faculty participated in the annual health fair at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia on October 30th. Dr. Toni Collado, Lesa Crane, RDH, CDA,MAHA, and Bettina M. Gigliello, RDH, BS, CDA, supervised while first and second year dental hygiene students provided oral health information and services to adults and children in our community.

The students provided head and neck exams to screen for oral cancer, and senior students presented a table clinic on tobacco cessation and oral cancer awareness.

Senior dental hygiene students mentored first year students and provided instructions for brushing and flossing for good oral care throughout life. Children were also screened by Dr. Collado for sealants, and although, no children qualified, they did receive fluoride varnish.

Two portable dental units were utilized to provide these services comfortably for health fair visitors. Nearly one hundred goodie bags filled with age appropriate toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss was distibuted. Supplies were generously donated by Oral B, Dentek, and Drs. Mark Kowal and R. Allen Macilwaine of Richmond, Va.

Participation in the health fair at Resurrection Lutheran Church, and other service learning projects allows students to practice their skills and learn what is involved in planning and developing public health projects. Senior Dental Hygiene student, Susan Dunmire, stated, “Opportunities like this are great for our community, and as more people hear about what we are offering, it will continue to grow.”

GCC & Dogwood Village receive the William Carrington Business & Education Partnership Award Germanna Community College was contacted by Dogwood Village of Orange County Health and Rehabilitation after they received a grant to improve their retention of Certified Nursing Assistants. They chose to do this through Peer Mentoring and training in teamwork and communication. Germanna offered to develop a program to meet the needs of Dogwood Village by using our trainer Mary Jane Reed. Ms. Reed met with leadership staff of Dogwood Village and adapted a mentoring program designed to meet their specific needs. Staff and management were so excited by this training that plans are now underway to expand the program. Ms. Reed laid the groundwork for improving communication among all levels of employees.

Employee turnover in nursing facilities is notoriously high, sometimes reaching over 80% at some facilities. Dogwood Village’s turnover is not nearly that high but they felt they could do better. The objective of the initial grant was to address the importance of communication to build a more successful team and ultimately improve retention. The collaborative efforts of Germanna and Dogwood Village have positively influenced the culture change initiatives of the twenty-first century long-term care provider.

GCC Students Help with Rescued HorsesGermanna students in enrolled in the horseback riding classes were instrumental in bringing two rescue horses back into good health, and they learned to trust human care again. The class participated in treatment of wounds, scabs, infections and malnutrition. Both horses now reside at White Buffalo Horse Farm under the instruction and care of Judith Watson.

Virginia Education Wizard The Wizard can help students choose a career, get the information they would need to pursue your career, find the college that is right for them, pay for college, transfer from a community college to a university, and a resource to answers their questions about their future.

Dual Enrollment An enriching program where high school students take college courses and earn college credit in their own high school.

Credits earned through Dual Enrollment are both high school and college credits. College credits transfer to Virginia Community Colleges, and most four-year colleges and universities.

Dual Enrollment classes are taught during the school day at the high school, making college-level academics accessible to all high school students. Dual Enrollment credits cost far less than credits earned at four-year colleges and universities, and are earned before students graduate from high school.

These courses hold the same rigor as any college level course. Dual Enrollment instructors are credentialed by Germanna to teach these college courses at the high school. Most Dual Enrollment classes are weighted, so students committed to these courses have the opportunity to increase their high school GPA.
