Engineers Australia has designated 2008 as the “Year of the Engineering Team” in recognition of the diversity that constitutes the engineering profession and its work. To align with this theme, Victoria Division will

be celebrating its diversity in several ways throughout the year including:

Profiling members in various ways to • reinforce the different kinds of engineers and related occupations that make up the profession or engineering team;

Promoting the opportunities afforded to • students considering engineering as a

career through the graduate careers fair, Engineering Employment Handbook and schools speaking program. In particular Victoria Division will be looking to raise the awareness and understanding amongst members (and publicly) of the role of technologists and officers in the engineering team and its outputs;

Building on the Division’s industry • breakfasts, introduced last year to highlight and generate solutions to issues facing professional engineers, technologists and officer members; and

Exploring ways to expand our value • proposition to service all members in Victoria better.

Within the 83,000-plus membership of Engineers Australia, there are some 1,400 Technologists and just under 5,000 Associates. Technologists generally possess three year degrees, while Associates possess two year diplomas.

The Engineering Team Task Force has been established by Council to propose

and deliver a plan of action for achieving increased acceptance of Technologists and Associates within Engineers Australia, and the Australian community during 2008, designated by Council as the ‘Year of the Engineering Team.’

Council has agreed to a program of action across eight specific issues, namely; understanding, attitudes and perceptions, disenfranchisement, articulation, international accords, accreditation, registration, and membership value.

A particular characteristic of this project will be the emphasis on achieving the necessary changes within Engineers Australia to improve the value proposition for Technologists and Associates, and project progress will largely be measured by outcomes for which the Institution itself is responsible.

Paul Varsanyi, of Engineering Practice Directorate at National Office, is the

Project Officer assigned to this task during 2008. Support to the Project will also be provided by Lee Vereschildt, of Marketing & Communications Directorate.

The January 2008 issue of Engineers Australia Magazine featured more detail of the project. The Engineers Australia web site will also carry regular updates on progress.

Please log on to www.engineersaustralia.org.au.

2008 - Year of The Engineering Team

Name: Loke-Poh Wong

Age: 49

Membership MIEAust CPEng Status:

Engineering Environmental Discipline:

Job Title: Director

Company: PE Consulting Services Pty Ltd

Did you always want to be an engineer? My brothers are chartered accountants. Didn’t like the look of blood so that struck out medical science courses. Engineering on the other hand had the appeal of an exciting and creative career.

If you weren’t an engineer, what would you be doing?Bean counting. My brothers have bigger houses and investment portfolios than me. Alternatively pursue a sport that can win me an Olympic gold medal!

Name one of the most exciting projects you have worked on?Have to be the Melbourne Zoo’s water recycling project. Have worked on many larger projects, but those projects only require specialist input at specific phases whereas with the Zoo I was involved virtually with a blank sheet of paper developing water conservation strategies from raw data I collected, obtaining government funding, finally working across multi-discipline engineering to deliver a sustainable outcome.

What prompted you to become a member of EA?The need to learn from and to share work related experiences with fellow engineers and associates of the engineering profession.

What are the main benefits of being a member of EA?Initially it was attending the seminars, technical talks, workshops, conferences, etc but later I realised the best benefits were to be involved in committees organising the seminars, technical talks, workshops, conferences, etc.

Favourite engineering feat?Leading different groups of engineers and scientists on overseas projects particularly to Malaysia.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?I am a passionate badminton player since I was old enough to hold a racket. My wife and two children play the game and share the same passion. In giving something back, or an excuse because I am getting older and slower, I now serve in various Boards running the sport on a State and National level.

Dream job?Chief Environmental Engineer overseeing all sporting venue construction for 2012 London Olympics.

3 words to best describe you?Eager, efficient, easy-going. Is that 4 words?

What makes you laugh? Family and friends

Favourite quote?Money doesn’t bring happiness; it just brings out more of who you are.anonymous

Favourite book? Yet to read one that I can call favourite.

Favourite movie?Troy

Favourite holiday spot? Anywhere with a golf course

Favourite restaurant? Eastern Palace in Rowville

Red or white wine? White then red

All about you!

In 2004, the management team at Aker Kvaerner made a decision to implement a strong graduate program within Aker Kvaerner Australia. This was a significant change for an industry and company who had focused on recruiting experienced engineers as a preference. We had realised that the industry was missing out on the modern skills, drive and enthusiasm that young people could bring into the organisation.

A group of engineers from our 2004 Young Leaders team were asked to take a major role in the recruitment of our new engineers and the development of a graduate program for our proposed recruits.

We were overwhelmed by the response to our recruitment campaign, therefore much of the recruitment work was carried out by the young engineers, who screened close to 600 applicants and conducted first round interviews in Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. The young engineers were supported by the Chief Engineers, HR in each state and David Ball our current Graduate Development Program Manager.

Eventually we selected six graduates for the first year, four of whom are graduating in 2008.

Having recruited our engineers we needed to devise a Graduate Development Program. This process saw the development of the ‘experience map’, a competency achievement process, which still forms the core of our program today.

During the subsequent few years we have grown bolder, more efficient and professional at recruiting, developing and managing our graduates. In 2005 we recruited six graduates, in 2006 we recruited 12, in 2007 we recruited 22, in 2008 we recruited 14, and our plans for 2009 sit at 22. We now use a recruitment firm

to help us shortlist our candidates from over 1200 to approximately 100 before we conduct interviews.

Today we have over 50 graduate engineers and a very high retention rate which I attribute to the quality and values of the young people we hire, the strength of the graduate program and the tireless efforts of our mentors, managers and all staff involved.

David Ball, Graduate Development Program Manager, was invaluable, particularly in the early days of educating our Project Managers about the benefits of working with young people and in persisting in finding great rotations and experiences for all our graduates.

We originally developed a three year graduate program on our own, and later in 2007 we incorporated the Engineers Australia Professional Development Program (PDP) to provide a clear path toward achieving Chartered Status. We finally had a truly world class program, undoubtedly the best in Aker Kvaerner.

Beyond the First Three Years of Professional Formation:

During mid 2007 we started to develop a Beyond Year 3 (BY3) program. This program is being developed by one of our young senior engineers, with help from some graduates and other senior engineers. This program is intended to provide ongoing structure development for the end of the current graduate program through to the attainment of the Senior Engineer position. We are implementing this in response to some of our more experienced engineers who felt we had a great graduate program, a great management development program, but were missing some support for the years in between.

This program will include a competency

orientated development plan including rotations through overseas assignments, continued technical training, increasing contact with clients, improving understanding of commercial and ethical issues, and working effectively in teams.

Of course the best programs in the world are not effective unless the participants in the program, participate fully and make the best of their opportunities. I would like to thank all our graduates for their enthusiasm, persistence and brilliance in changing Aker Kvaerner Australia. They have been an important part of transforming this organisation and I can honestly say that implementing this program has been one of the most rewarding tasks I have been involved with in the last few years.

Chartered Status - Opening Doors Overseas… a personal account

NEW Workshop: How to Prepare for the Chartered Status Professional interview

In response to member feedback, in 2008 Engineers Australia, Victoria Division is offering a NEW Workshop on How to prepare for the Chartered Status Professional Interview

This 30 minute session will shed light on what happens at a Chartered Status Professional Interview. The Professional Interview is the second part of the Chartered Status assessment. After having an Engineers Australia Assessor endorse your Engineering Practice Report as demonstrating the required competencies, all Chartered Status applicants need to attend a Professional Interview. In this session to help you prepare for the Interview, we will discuss the composition of the Interview Panel, the candidate’s presentation, and the questioning techniques used.

This workshop will be offered on the following dates in 2008:

Wednesday, 21 May 2008 • 6:00pm for 6:15pm

Wednesday, 19 November 2008 • 6:00pm for 6:15pm

For further information on the full range of Chartered Status Presentations and Workshops, please contact Diana Michetti on 9321 1709 or [email protected]

At the start of 2007 I joined the many other young Australians enjoying the lifestyle of living and working in London. After an all too brief holiday period of sightseeing and sleep-ins I began to look for structural engineering work. I quickly found employment, but did notice the additional opportunities and financial incentives available to chartered engineers, and so on my recent return to Australia for the Christmas break I undertook a Professional Interview to gain Chartered Status.

In London I am employed by a large multi-national engineering practise and have worked on projects both locally and as far abroad as Turkey and Kazakhstan. The company readily acknowledges and respects the qualifications of IEAUST and a number of senior employees, including my Group Director, are in fact Australians having IEAUST Chartership. Completing the process was important for my career progression, enabling me to now accept greater roles of responsibility and leadership in a large and often competitive workplace.

The Professional Interview was difficult, but not so time consuming that I couldn’t still enjoy the Christmas turkey and Boxing Day cricket, and IEAUST Chartership is something that I would recommend to any other young engineer planning to similarly enjoy the lifestyle of living and working abroad.

Understanding the Adopt a School Project … benefits for the engineering profession

Adopt a School Programme seeks to develop effective grassroots partnerships between schools and local businesses for the benefit of industry, schools and business. Adopt a School (ASP) projects build links between businesses, students, teachers and the broader school community through activities that increase knowledge and opportunities for careers and further education. Adopt a School (ASP) projects are part of the Federal government initiative called Career Advice Australia (CAA) which aims to address the skill shortages now reaching critical levels in some industry areas.

The Inner Melbourne VET Cluster (IMVC) is a Local Community Partnership (LCP) of 61 State, Catholic and Independent schools located in the inner Melbourne area and has been a key driver in pathways programs for secondary schools over the past ten years.

As a Local Community Partnership the IMVC facilitates the Adopt a School Programme which involves linking industry directly to schools.

Whilst IMVC has experienced considerable success in engaging schools and tertiary providers in this program, engaging industry has been somewhat problematic. Currently the IMVC offers a number of very successful projects for a variety of industries and we aim to engage the Engineering industry in our region by offering a flexible range of ASP models to suit industry needs. By participating in an ASP project employers have an opportunity to showcase the engineering industry and the variety of careers available. As an IMVC Engineering ASP industry partner you can start to improve:

The skill shortages in engineers from entry • level to post graduate level;

The number of senior secondary students • undertaking higher level mathematics and sciences with a view to engage in an engineering career;

The engagement of young women in • engineering studies.

An IMVC Adopt a School programme can include; Industry tours, classroom visits from industry experts, delivery of seminars to students and parents, career development linked to industry, project based activities and structured work placements in industry.

By offering to be part of an Adopt a School programme your organisation can start to address some of the key career and transition issues facing the Engineering industry. The IMVC would like to encourage Engineers Australia members to consider participating in an ASP programme.

Benefits to your organisation would include:

Giving your employees a valuable training • experience while assisting a young person acquire valuable work skills;

The opportunity to be involved in making • education more relevant to your industry’s needs;

The capacity to recruit new employees who • are productive and pre skilled;

Recognition as a good corporate agency • with enhanced community image;

Access to broader networks. •

The IMVC will be facilitating seven Adopt a School projects in 2008. We are keen to include the engineering industry in our projects this year but need your help!

If you would like more information on how to participate in an Adopt a School project or would like your organisation to be part of an IMVC program please contact Bernadette Gigliotti, Career and Transition Manager, IMVC on 9686 2354 or [email protected]

News from South West

Our region’s final event for 2007 was the inaugural Presentation Night and dinner, which was held in Portland. The night was a huge success with the venue being completely booked out well in advance. During the night, three of our members gave quite interesting half hour presentations on waste management in the region for the next thirty years, the refining and smelting process at Alcoa, and the asset management system at Wannon Water.

With 2008 now in full swing, the group held a site tour of the Port of Portland including the new mineral sands port facility in late February. Our next event will be the second Presentation Night to be held in early April. We welcome all EA members to our events, so please contact Brett Johnston (Secretary) if you wish to join us at [email protected]

The Melbourne School of Engineering at the University of Melbourne is pleased to present a public lecture by the Vice Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Lieutenant General Ken Gillespie AO DSC CSM. He will address the topic: Military building and engineering: a view from the top.

Lieutenant General Gillespie is well-placed to discuss the military’s approach to engineering. His first commission was in the corps of the Royal Australian Engineers, after graduating from the Officer Cadet School, at Portsea in 1972. Since then, he has held a range of military engineering and command

appointments. He served as an instructor at the School of Military Engineering in Australia and at the Royal School of Military Engineering in the UK. He was second in command of the 2nd Australian Contingent to the United Nations Transition Assistance Group in Namibia. As a Brigadier, he commanded the United Nations Sector West multinational brigade in East Timor in 1999, and later was the National Commander of Australia’s contribution to “Operation Enduring Freedom” in Iraq. For his service as the Commander Australian Contingent, Operation Slipper in Afghanistan, Lieutenant General Gillespie was advanced to Officer of the Order of Australia in the Military Division. He was also awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his command and leadership in East Timor in 2000/2001 and the Conspicuous Service Medal for his work in Namibia in 1989/90. He is one of Australia’s most experienced soldiers, celebrating 40 years of service in the military in January this year.

This event will take place on Tuesday 8 April 2008 at The University of Melbourne.

NEW – Office Bearers and Volunteer ResourcesPlease take the time to read the feature and cover story on Celebrating Volunteers in the February 2008 edition of Engineers Australia magazine, and the supporting messages in the National President’s column.

The magazine feature announced our new volunteer support web site at www.engineersaustralia.org.au/volunteer-support. It also mentioned the free office bearer training workshops that are now being provided.

The National President, Peter Taylor has encouraged all office bearers to make use of the new on-line induction process, role descriptions and training. Please review these on the web site and get yourself involved.

Note that the web site also provides three downloadable brochures, which you may find helpful. These are available in hard copy from the Victoria Division Office.
