Aluminum Can Recycling Program Comes to an End...But Pays Off Bigtime!

In the May Blueprint we reported that the Alcan recycling program had come to an end. But, thanks to the amazing efforts of so many of you, we were awarded a $60,000 grant as one of the top three Habitat recyclers of used aluminum beverage cans in 2007-08. (Other winners were Habitat Kamloops, BC and Habitat Kingston & Frontenac, Ontario.)

The award was presented at the national AGM in May and will recognize Rio Tinto Alcan as a sponsor helping to build our next five homes in Phase 5.

Recognition BBQ:

On August 24th we celebrated the heart of our organization - our volunteers - at an indoor BBQ at the Vancouver ReStore. Despite the heavy rain, more than 75 volunteers, families, board and staff gathered to enjoy a fantastic BBQ generously donated and catered by Fogg & Suds. It was a time to get together and celebrate the hard work that everyone does to make a difference, with prizes and goody bags. Special thanks and acknowledgement goes to the following companies for their support: Tak Uyede and Sam Boonyaprasop with Fogg n’ Suds, Ernie Letawsky with Intercity Packers, Canada Bread, Intercity Meats, Pepsi Canada, Sysco Foodservices, BIN 941 Tapas Parlour, Flying Wedge Pizza, Havana Restaurant, McDonald’s Canada, MOCCIA Italian Meat Market, Panago Pizza and Uprising Breads Bakery.

Much to Celebrate: More to Build Thousands of volunteer hours, scores of businesses and major corporations, and many individual donors have all come together to build the four homes that are almost complete. From our families, the Board and staff - Habitat for Humanity thanks you all. Your dedication and support strengthens our commitment to build homes and hope for families. As we near the end of this building phase, four families are growing anxious to move into their new homes. We at Habitat are eager too, as we complete their homes and prepare to begin Phase 5 — another five homes. Every time we complete a project and see families move into new homes, it reinforces how important our goals are. The work of Habitat continues year round, and we can’t do it without your help. Do you work for an organization that would like to sponsor or do you know other people whose skills could benefit Habitat? Do you know of available land or sources for material supplies? And don’t forget that every time you make a financial donation, a portion of those funds are forwarded to building Habitat homes internationally. You not only help families locally, but also in other countries around the world. “There are many wonderful things that will never be done if you don’t do them.” (Charles. D. Gill) Thank you and we hope to see you at the dedication.
