As I quickly get acclimated to JCC life, I find comfort in seeing themyriad of faces walking through our doors every day. From ourpreschoolers and their parents, campers, teens, young adults andfamilies, active adults and our frail elderly, the JCC is a place whereeveryone feels comfortable and can find an aspect of Jewish lifewhich interests and engages them.

With a growing community comes new challenges. We must remainrelevant to the next generation by continuing to offer programs andservices that attract and inspire Jewish journeys. We must also be

convenient and accessible tothe greater community. Theseare not only challenges fortoday, but for our collectiveJewish future in the greaterPalm Beaches.

These challenges will createexciting opportunities for ourcommunity. We are fortunateto assemble a new Board ofDirectors that comprise someof the top leadership in thearea. They have the criticalresponsibility of determiningand driving the future direc-tion of the JCC to ensure ourcontinued growth. We alsohave a new President, StaceyLevy, who has agreed toreturn to the same position

she held a number of years ago. There is no one better to effective-ly lead the JCC along this inspired journey and I am honored to havethe opportunity of closely working with her in this capacity. I alsowant to thank Immediate Past President, Shelly Friedman, for herleadership and dedication the past two years. Shelly made difficultyet important decisions to ensure the JCC’s vitality and will serve asan officer on our Board this coming year.

Please visit our branches in West Palm Beach and Boynton Beachthis summer. You will see hundreds of campers in their bright col-ored Camp Shalom t-shirts, adults working out in our fitness cen-ters, and a number of other programs being offered. Our Wellingtonlocation also continues to reach more people every month throughan expansion of services.

Thank you for your continued support.

Page 7: JCC Insider - August 2008 - September 2008

This is how Anna Plotkin and Zach Stewart met, married, andrecently became the 500th area family to join the JCCParenting Center’s Shalom Baby program: in June of 2005,Anna Plotkin walked into Don Carter’s All Star Lanes in LakeWorth to attend a singles bowling nightsponsored by the JCC of the Greater PalmBeaches. Plotkin spotted Zach Stewartwalking towards the singles group toting abowling bag. “I want this guy on my team,”Plotkin thought.

“I like this girl, she knows what shewants,” Stewart thought. The two talkedthe entire evening. “I thought there wassomething special about this guy,” saysPlotkin, who is 33 and is manager of theDrowning Prevention Coalition of PalmBeach County. She was disappointedwhen Stewart, an English teacher at PalmBeach Lakes High School, didn’t ask forher number at the end of the evening. Thenext day, in a move she describes as“Completely out of character; I had neverpursued someone before,” she called JCCHochman Branch Family & Young AdultDirector Andrea Peleg, who had organizedthe event, and asked for Stewart’s email.

“I wrote Zach and said something along the lines of,‘Remember me? I met you at the JCC singles event the othernight. Would you like to go out sometime?’” He responded“Yes.” The two went out a week later, and have been togetherever since. They married on March 11, 2007. Their first child isdue in October.

When the Stewarts found out they were pregnant, Anna regis-tered with the JCC Parenting Center’s Shalom Baby program—and discovered she was a winner of a contest she didn’t knowexisted: The Stewarts were the 500th family to sign up forShalom Baby, entitling them to $100 off the cost of the JCCEarly Childhood Learning Center enrollment, or discounts onother JCC programs for five years. The decision to start aParenting Center, which opened in July of 2006, evolved fromwhat Bonnie Rayman, the J’s Chief Operations Officer, describes as an ‘A-ha!’ moment.

“We were in the process of prioritizing goals for the JCC andwe realized we needed more programs for young families aswe want the J to be a gateway to Judaism for Jewish Families,”Rayman explains. “We already had pre-schools, but after pre-school, involvement ends for many families. We realized wewere doing a lot for kids, but not their parents. The idea toengage parents was an ‘A-ha!’ moment for me.”

The Parenting Center’s mission is to serve as the gateway forJewish parents to the Jewish community. It’s both a resourceand an oasis for parents of children of all ages. The time duringchildren’s formative years are when families are most vulnera-ble and need support and resources. The goal of the J is to fill

that need, and engage and enrich Jewishlives in the process.

Included in the Parenting Center are theShalom Baby and Shalom Belly programs.Shalom Baby (which actually led to thebirth of the Parenting Center), supportsJewish families by providing a peer groupand a sense of community, with dynamic, knowledgeable experts providing cuttingedge information and programming.Shalom Baby works closely with area syn-agogues.

Shalom Belly, begun in October of 2006,caters to the special interests of our ‘stillpregnant’ Shalom Baby families andenables registration and participation inJCC events before the birth of a newbaby. The Parenting Center welcomesthis group of expectant parents withworkshops including such topics as “Whatdoes a Hebrew name mean?,” “Brit Mila,”and “Our first Shabbat as a family.”

Shalom Belly also offers all manner of childbirth educationclasses, including pre-natal massage.

“We’ve created an environment where parents can cometogether and discuss issues in a supportive setting,” saysParenting Center Coordinator Melissa Engelberg. “We wantparents to learn, connect with other parents, develop bondsand become part of a community.”

And, of course, that includes Anna Plotkin and Zach Stewartand their first child, the 500th Shalom Baby family.

For more information about the JCC Parenting Center andShalom Baby or Shalom Belly programs, contact MelissaEngelberg at 561-736-4757 or [email protected] our Wellington Branch, please contact SharonLowenstein at 561-253-6030 or [email protected].

It’s 10 o’clock on a Wednesday morning inMay, and the sun is firing up the breeze blow-ing across the tennis courts at JCC KaplanBranch. Members of the JCC Women’s TennisTeam, guided by coach Greg Neuhart, actoblivious to the furnace-like breeze as theypractice volleying.

With the season over, and a first place finishattained in the B-3 Division of the Palm BeachCounty Women’s Tennis Association (PBCW-TA), it’s impressive that 10 team membershave turned out to practice on a near-swel-tering weekday. A combination of things hasdrawn them to the courts: the camaraderiethat has developed among members duringthe past year; the opportunity to improvetheir game under a world-class coach, and achance for teammates to gather again tosavor their first-place division finish.

Winning the B-3 Division (with a record of 18-0) ensured the JCC women’s team of beingbumped up to the tougher B-2 Division fornext season. Arlene Butler and AngelaArigoni-Mesfioui will captain that team. Asecond JCC team, with Lauren Leary andJeanine Lerner serving as captains, will con-tinue to compete in the B-3 Division.

“We wanted to advance to the B-2 division,”says team member Missy Wortman, who isalso B-3 Division president of the PBCWTA.“To do that, we had to win our division. Weput lots of pressure on ourselves to do that, and we did it. We have really strong players.”

While winning the division was “awesome,”and important for the program, first placewasn’t first priority, Wortman says. “First andforemost this is fun and social; second, we’veall improved our games, we’re all better play-

ers. And while not the most important thing,we do like to win. This coming season thepressure will be on to get a team in the B-1Division.”

Team members are quick to point out thatfirst-year coach Greg Nuehart is a primaryreason for the team’s progress and winningways. At 6-feet, 9-inches tall, he’s an impos-ing figure who commands attention.

A native Californian, Neuhart played tennisfor the University of California, competed onthe ATP tour for 10 years, then played on thesenior tour (35 and over) with tennis legendssuch as Jimmy Connors John McEnroe andBjorn Borg, where he achieved No. 1 ITF rank-ings in 1996 and 1997 while play-ing in front of crowds of 8,000-9,000 people.

He continues to compete in the45 and over division as well ascoach. He calls the JCC women’steam, “very coach-able,” addingthat “Even the most experiencedplayers are very receptive. Theyhave a great attitude aboutlearning and team work. I’mteaching them to play the waythe best players in the worldplay.” His coaching style is basedon a system he created afteryears of watching and competingagainst the best players in theworld with a large dose of posi-tive reinforcement.

His job is made easier, he says, because, “They’re an unbeliev-ably close-knit team. They all getalong really well, the chemistry is

unbelievable. They all help each other. It’slike having five or six coaches looking out forthe other teammates. There’s no jealousy orbackstabbing.”

Says last season’s co-captain Lauren Leary:“Coach is the nicest guy in the entire world. He’s so encouraging, and he’s improved all ofour games. He gave me a new way to serve.”Co-captain Stacey Kushner adds, “He’s amotivator; he has the expertise, professional-ism, and he knows how to teach. And it’s beenlots of fun.”

Both co-captains credit Neuhart with savingthe program. “We went from barely enoughmembers for one team,” Kushner says, “butwith great word of mouth about the newcoach’s approach, we’ve now got two fullteams (in two divisions).”

The team has evolved into a social club aswell. “We like each other; we’ve becomefriends,” Wortman says. “We have parties. We recently had a Tennis Girls’ Night Out. It’sa very welcoming, cohesive group—cohesivebut not cliquish. We welcome new memberswith open arms.”

The JCC Women’s Tennis Team is current-ly seeking new members of all levels ofexperience. Membership costs start at just$400. For more information, please con-tact Missy Wortman at [email protected] or561-512-3599.
