there’s plenty of reason to live in the northland — “God’s country” we like to call it

— and our 2008 Guide helps you to realize or discover just what those are.

Whether it’s tapping into an array of community resources, navigating your way along hiking or biking trails, deciding what service club to join, or getting to better know a local school system or governing body, we’ve compiled that information — and lots more — to help you do just that.

Keep your Guide as a handy resource at home and at work, but should you be caught without it, know that you can access this wealth of information on our Gaylord Herald Times Web site, www.gaylordheraldtimes.com.

a new $3.8-million City Hall with an Alpine motif, topped with a 73-foot spire and clock tower, is rising on the eastern

edge of the city, at the corner of Main and North Oak streets. Completion of the 28,900-square-foot facility is expected to be completed in April 2008. The building will house city offices and council chambers, and the Gaylord Police Department and garage.

The city of Gaylord was incorporated in March 1922. Since then, it has become a regional business and recreation hub. The city operates under a home-rule city charter, as a council-manager government.

Gaylord developed an Alpine motif in the 1960s, lending a unique charm to the city, which has come to be known also as the Alpine Village. The residents of the city adopted Pontresina, Switzerland, in 1965 as Gaylord’s sister city, and the citizens of Switzerland sent Gaylord a boulder from the Swiss Alps in 1989, which now stands at the northwest corner of the courthouse lawn.

Gaylord’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA) completed a $2-million streetscape project in 1995, enhancing the city’s Alpine theme with stylish downtown lighting, parks, partially bricked pathways, benches and trees.

Another DDA project, the Pavilion on Court Street, officially opened in the summer of 2002. The structure, which nearly spans from Main to First Street, hosts farmers markets, concerts, antique markets, car shows and more, and is a central gathering area during Gaylord’s annual Alpenfest.

As Otsego County continues to grow, the city of Gaylord’s boundaries also have been expanded, extending water and sewer services to developing businesses.

elmiraLong known for its farming, and in particular,

potato production, the small but close-knit community of Elmira is situated a few miles west of Gaylord, on the western edge of Otsego County. M-32 winds like a ribbon through the heart of the burg, whose residents still support a Catholic church, a small cafe, post office, general store and lone tavern.

Today’s Elmira is perhaps quieter than days of old, when it was established in 1883 under the name Windsor and served as a haven for lumbermen.

At one time, Elmira was a thriving community boasting sawmills, hotels, several stores, a church, post office, bank, school and town hall. A birds-eye view of the town around the turn of the century shows a booming community situated along today’s M-32.

In the years that followed, the population of Elmira dwindled and businesses closed, but many people still call it home, and have for generations.

Surrounding the community are acres of farmland, upon which still stand many family farms producing various crops and, of course, the potato,

a mainstay not only at the dinner table, but for the community. The lumbermen are long gone, as is the activity surrounding the railroad, but what still exists in Elmira is a population proud of its heritage.

JohannesburgJohannesburg, like many other Otsego County

towns, emerged with lumbering and milling operations.

This community — which today boasts a huge annual Fourth of July celebration complete with holiday parade, games and fireworks — is one rich in history. Just 10 miles east of Gaylord on M-32, Johannesburg was incorporated in 1901 and was home to the lumbering company of Johannesburg Mfg. Co., operated by the Salling, Hanson and Michelson families.

The town was named after Johanna Hanson, wife of the president of the company. The company was responsible for much of the construction in the small burg, including the development of a branch railroad line, which was for many years a lifeline for the town.

At its peak, Joburg, as it is nicknamed, was a bustling community of 700. By 1929, lumbering

vanderbiltLocated in Corwith Township, Vanderbilt is

Otsego County’s northernmost municipality and is best-known as the “Gateway to the Pigeon River Country State Forest,” a 105,000-acre forest home to Michigan’s only elk herd. The forest attracts not just wildlife, but visitors and tourists eager to experience a pristine wilderness where blue ribbon rivers etch their way through miles of woods, fauna and flora.

The village of Vanderbilt was established in 1875, when the Jackson, Lansing & Saginaw Railroad extended its line northward from Gaylord. Construction on the railroad extension began in 1881. Virgin woods native to the area attracted timber buyers from across the country.

Besides the vast wilderness of the Pigeon River Country State Forest, Vanderbilt houses industries such as H&H Tube and Manufacturing, Van Products and Grant Airmass Corp. The village of Vanderbilt was established in 1901 as a general law village.

WatersThe community of Waters, 11 miles south of

Gaylord on Old U.S. 27, has undergone a face lift recently, dressing up its downtown with new streetlights, signage and landscaping. In 2007, the community debuted Thunder Over Waters, a festival with fireworks and activities, and residents hope the Labor Day weekend becomes as much a part of this burg as its rich lumbering history.

The community has an up-and-down existence since its establishment as a village in 1872, being deserted and re-established three times. It was once known as Bradford or Bradford Lake, then Wrights, and now Waters.

The village flourished for many years under the logging industry, but as the forest area was cleared, residents began relocating, and little remained of the community. In 1891, lumberman Henry Stephens Sr. helped the village to prosper again, and by 1905, about 300 people lived there.

After inheriting his father’s fortune, Henry Stephens, Jr. made Waters his home in 1912 and built a large dairy farm. He began construction of a glass bottle fence in memory of the lumberjacks of the day. Portions of the fence still stand.

In 1927 the Remi Schottes family purchased 1,800 acres of land, donating parcels for a fire department, post office and village park. Though the Stephens farm no longer exists, Waters, the heart of Otsego Lake Township, survives.

Guide2008 otseGo County History 45

the county of Otsego was established by the Michigan Legislature in 1840 at a time when the area was still

frequented by American Indians on the shores of Otsego Lake. In 1843, the state Legislature changed the name of the county to Otsego, and in the last 150 years or so, the area located on the 45th parallel has grown into a hub of activity and new enterprise.

Although the word “Otsego” is derived from an Iroquoian word “Okkudo,” the exact meaning of this word is disputed. By some accounts, “Okkudo” means “clear waters,” while others contend the original word meant “sickly” or “stomach pains.”

Though no evidence remains, it is believed there once was an Indian village on the southern shore of the lake. Until the late 1860s, Otsego County remained a vast, unpopulated wilderness, save for the occasional visiting trapper.

In 1868, pioneer A.A. Dwight braved the elements and the unknown and brought a crew of men north to Otsego, constructing log cabins along Crooked Lake, now known as Manuka Lake.

Continued hardships drove the men from the area, but the spring of 1869 found Charles S. Brink and a crew of 14 men clearing acreage for farming. Brink’s wife, Jane, was the first white woman in the county. Brink and his men embarked on a serious lumbering operation, including the building of many dams in the area and commencing log drives down the AuSable River.

Those early lumbering days gave way to post-Civil War homesteading, the birth of Otsego Lake Village, and the eventual construction of a lumber mill, homes, businesses, a library, town hall, a school and a Methodist church. In 1875, the small community of Otsego Lake was established as the county seat, but within two years, the county seat was moved north to Gaylord.

The county encompasses the townships of Bagley, Charlton, Chester, Corwith, Dover, Elmira, Hayes, Livingston, Otsego Lake, the city of Gaylord and the villages of Waters, Elmira, Vanderbilt and Johannesburg, which have remained as the primary communities in the county.

Through the years, Otsego County has attracted numerous businesses and industries and today boasts hundreds of business establishments to support its growing population.

The county has also become well-known as a popular four-season vacation spot, annually attracting thousands to the area for golfing, swimming, boating, skiing, snowmobiling, fishing and hunting.

From the chilly waters of the rivers that flow through the area to the many lakes to the miles of untainted forest area, Otsego County represents not only clear waters, but a comfortable living and community pride.

This year members of the Otsego County Historical Society are celebrating the 14th anniversary of the opening of their museum in downtown Gaylord.

The museum, which is open from June to October, maintains a large collection of pictures and negatives as well as items of historical significance portraying the county’s past.

The group began with 20 charter members in 1963, and in the1980s merged with the Otsego County Pioneer Society. Membership now totals more than 200 businesses and individuals.

The Historical Society’s mission is to bring together people interested in history, especially the history of Otsego County. It works to:

• collect material that helps to establish or illustrate the history of the area;

From home, school or office, users may view their account; renew or reserve titles; and use databases that cannot be found free on the Internet, such as USA Business Data, Auto Repair Reference Center, Heritage Quest and eBooks from NetLibrary.

Research assistance, preschool story hours, summer reading clubs, class tours, computer classes and informational programs are among the many

services the library staff offers. Faxing, laminating and copy services also are available for a small fee.

Library patrons may access more than 26 million items from libraries around the state through the Michigan Electronic Library Catalog. With an Otsego County Library card, the community resident may order anything owned at participating public and university libraries and have it delivered at no cost to their hometown library.

Guide2008 reCreation 57

nestled among 80 lakes, rivers and streams, with a unique location on the 45th parallel, Otsego County offers

outdoor recreation for vacationers and year-round residents alike.

Boasting more than 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, downhill and cross-country skiing, year-round fishing, hiking, a limestone surfaced bike trail, elk viewing and numerous parks, Otsego County is an ideal vacation destination during all four seasons.

An average of 150 inches of snowfall each year, and unspoiled wilderness also make the Gaylord area — the heart of Northern Michigan — a multi-seasonal playground for a variety of family recreational opportunities.

To contact the Gaylord Area Convention & Tourism Bureau, call 732-6333. Or call the Gaylord Information Center at 732-4000 or 800-345-8621. Also an excellent source for area recreation information is the Dept. of Natural Resources, 732-3541.

elk vieWingMichigan’s native elk population disappeared around

1875, but rebounded after seven elk were released near Wolverine in 1918. The Pigeon River Country State Forest, about 13 miles east of Vanderbilt on Sturgeon Valley Road, is the heart of Michigan’s elk range which is home to an estimated 1,000 animals.

The best time for viewing elk is early morning and late evening, especially in the spring (April 15-May 15) and fall (Sept. 10-Oct. 10). Elk-viewing areas have been established where the ground has been seeded with rye, alfalfa, buckwheat and clover to draw the elk, deer and turkeys into open areas.

Elk have been sighted on Fontinalis Road, about three miles north of Sturgeon Valley Road near the Cheboygan County line where a small parking area and a field have been cleared by the Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR); at an elk-viewing area (with DNR signs indicating the location) on East Sturgeon Valley Road, about eight miles east of Vanderbilt; and about .4 miles north of the intersection of Osmun Road and Clark Bridge Road in the Pigeon River Country State Forest. Chances of seeing elk are increased by remaining at or near designated parking areas.

Detailed maps of various other elk-viewing sites are available at the DNR District Office, 1732 M-32 West, Gaylord, 732-3541.

In Gaylord, the elk/deer enclosure off Grandview Boulevard and Elkview behind Kmart is a popular draw, enabling people to get an up-close look at the animals.

fall color toursThe rolling countryside of Otsego County is ablaze

with color during Mother Nature’s autumn color extravaganza. The area usually hits its peak of color in early to mid-October. Hikers, motorists, horseback riders and mountain bikers travel along many picturesque scenic pathways in the area. The Gaylord Information Center at 125 S. Otsego Ave., Gaylord; 732-4000, can provide various maps and directions for many popular routes.

fishingAnglers can find great fishing across Otsego County

year-round. The county’s largest water body, Otsego Lake, receives regular DNR stockings of walleye, providing for a popular fishery during summer and winter months. Otsego Lake is also home to sturgeon, which can be legally sought by tag holders as a sport fish from mid-July through mid-March. Tags are available at the DNR field office, M-32 West, Gaylord; or at Don’s Sport & Marine, Old 27 South, Gaylord.

Other sought-after species such as northern pike, perch, largemouth and smallmouth bass, panfish and the occasional muskellunge can be found in Otsego Lake and across the rest of the county.

Otsego County is home to significant portions of the state’s best-known trout rivers: Black River, AuSable River, Pigeon River, Sturgeon River and Manistee River. Also, many area lakes are stocked with rainbow trout and splake (a brook trout/lake trout hybrid).

For more information on seasons, regulations and current license fees, pick up a guide at the DNR Operations Center office, 732-3541; or at license dealers around the county.

golfThe Gaylord Golf Mecca marked its 20th year in 2007,

and the greens of 22 courses continue to beckon golfers of all playing levels to their links.

In 1987, a group of golf courses in the Gaylord area joined forces to increase their marketing power and promote the Gaylord area as a premier golf destination. That concept — the Gaylord Golf Mecca — has succeeded to become one of the largest cooperative golf organizations in Michigan.

Boasting 22 championship courses, four resort destinations, 22 hotel properties, and numerous awards from golf magazines and organizations, the Gaylord Golf Mecca provides plenty of great quality golf to match every style of play. For further details, call the Gaylord Information Center at 732-4000.

huntingOtsego County is home to a wide variety of wildlife, and

hunters often pursue deer, bear, turkeys and numerous small game species. Licenses, as well as specific information on season dates, limits and rules are available from the Dept. of Natural Resources at its district office at 1732 M-32 West in Gaylord; 732-3541.

Since 2002, the number of antlerless deer licenses has dropped significantly in Otsego County and surrounding areas, in part to control the spread of bovine tuberculosis (TB). In 2007, 900 such licenses were available in Otsego County. In 2006, 600 licenses were issued; 1,200 in 2005; 1,400 in 2004; 1,500 in 2003; and 3,600 in 2002.

A ban on baiting and feeding is still in effect for Otsego County as a method of combating TB.

The 105,000 acres of public land in the Pigeon River Country State Forest are a popular destination for hunters.

mountain bikingBicycling enthusiasts — novices or veterans — can

experience all that is Northern Michigan along one of the many trails suited for mountain biking in Otsego County.

Some of the many trails worth exploring are:• Gaylord to Cheboygan Rails-to-Trails, a distance of

62 miles, accessible in Gaylord from Fairview Avenue near the soccer complex. This trail was improved in 2007 with an easy-to-ride crushed limestone surface. For more Rails-to-Trails information go to: www.trailscouncil.org

• Pine Baron Pathway, situated in the Mackinaw State Forest, and only six miles from the heart of Gaylord; to reach it, take Otsego Lake Drive west to Old Alba Road, continue westbound to Lone Pine Road, then northbound to the trailhead. This system of gently rolling to flat terrain has four short loops, which average two miles each

• High Country Pathway with detailed guides available through the Pigeon River Country Forest’s Visitor Center, PO Box 122, Gaylord, MI 49734. The guidebook includes detailed maps, descriptions of trees and points of interest and also includes information about the campgrounds.

• Shingle Mill Pathway, 10 miles east of Vanderbilt on Sturgeon Valley Road in the Pigeon River Country State Forest; this pathway offers six-, 10- and 11-mile loops on rolling to hilly terrain. Maps showing your location are posted at each intersection along the trail; maps also are available at the Forest Visitor’s Center; 983-4101, and at the DNR office on M-32 just west of Gaylord; 732-3541

• Aspen Park Pathway, a 1.7-mile lighted trail system located inside the Gaylord’s mostly forested 100-acre Aspen Park just east of South Otsego Avenue at the end of Commerce Boulevard. There are also a great deal of unpaved trails, making it a perfect location for the more daring mountain biker. One path along the paved trail winds past Gaylord’s fenced elk herd, while a path along the unpaved trail can take an explorer to a small pond. Map kiosks along the trails provide adventurers with a guide to their scenic travels.

For those who enjoy mountain biking, the North Chapter of the Michigan Mountain Bike Association holds the Michigan Bike Festival in September at Hanson Hills Recreation Area in Grayling. For more information on the Michigan Mountain Bike Association, visit www.mmba.org.

mushroom pickingIn May, the morel mushroom brings flocks of tourists

to Northern Michigan forests each year. Black morels appear in early May, and are followed by the rarer white morels in mid- to late May. Morels grow best in warm, wet conditions.

They may be found near stumps of dead elms, oak trees, beech-maple forests and old orchards. Mushroom hunters are advised to learn the characteristics of true (nonpoisonous) and false (poisonous) morels.

Pickers are reminded to respect private property. Any questions can be directed to the Dept. of Natural Resources at 732-3541.

The MSU Extension office has a brochure available to help identify morels. Call 731-0272 for more information.

On May 10-11, Lewiston will again host its Mushroom Celebration with arts and crafts. For information, call 786-2293.

• Also meandering around and west of Crapo Creek Trail is a route for ORVs of all sizes. Just north of the Otsego County line is the Tomahawk Trail (for ORVs less than 50 inches wide); the Tomahawk A, B and C trails are 36.8-, 17- and 40-mile loops, respectively. Included in the trail system are a few routes for ORVs of all sizes. Sections of the Michigan Cross Country Cycle Trail run through the area.

Guide2008 real estate 73

While Otsego County’s housing market is down somewhat, recent statistics through mid-December

2007 indicate the county is in better shape than most of Michigan, according to Nancy Jacob of Real Estate Professionals of Gaylord.

“With that in mind it appears that being a buyer in Michigan right now is a wonderful thing,” Jacob said. “Unfortunately in Gaylord, we have lost some substantial industries that have forced families out of the area.”

More than 500 homes were listed for sale in Otsego County near the end of 2007.

“Living and working in Otsego County has been a blessing for many,” Jacob continued. “It is tough to see some families break even or even lose money to be able to move on. Many Realtors are working very hard to make these transitions as pain free as we can. When you receive a phone call of a person very frustrated or struggling, it is comforting for them to know there are people out there who can help.”

She urges families who may be in trouble keeping up with house payments to not hesitate to take action to evade foreclosure by calling your lender or real estate agent for guidance.

“Do not wait until it is to late to make that call,” Jacob said. “A lot of times there are things that can be done which could help avoid a possible foreclosure.”

Otsego County continues to offer a variety of properties from waterfront homes, to wooded acreage to subdivision living.

Jacob noted that real estate reports indicate that the area housing market should stay on the same track through most of 2008, but may start to recover in late fall.

As the community grows, Otsego Memorial Hospital (OMH) grows as well, providing essential facilities and medical services to meet the demands of a growing population.

In 2007, the expanded and renovated Oncology & Infusion Center opened providing more chairs and space than the previous clinic. The total cost of the renovation project was $360,000. The project is entirely supported by the OMH Foundation, which includes a $25,000 gift from the OMH Auxiliary.

Patients in need of oncology and infusion-related therapies can receive treatment in this state-of-the-art building. It also has two private treatment rooms, enclosed by a sliding glass door. The building has dedicated parking and doubles the space of the existing clinic.

OMH is a progressive, fully accredited primary care facility serving Otsego and surrounding counties. Serving more than 2,100 inpatients and more than 85,000 outpatients per year, OMH also employs and affiliates with more than 80 medical practitioners, bringing a broad spectrum of health care services to the communities served.

In 2006, OMH completed an $11 million renovation project, which renovated and expanded

outpatient services throughout the hospital. The project also included a new Ambulatory Care

Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Pharmacy and four new surgical procedure rooms to enhance services to patients. Renovated outpatient services departments include Laboratory, Radiology, Rehabilitation Services and Cardiopulmonary, including Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

The two-year renovation project was intended to prepare the organization to service the growing need for outpatient services, and to help fund future renovations to other areas of the hospital over the years to come.

The project was supported by a very successful capital campaign by the OMH Foundation, which raised more than $1.5 million.

In the fall of 2005, a new hospital addition opened as existing interior areas began major renovations. The newly renovated main lobby, as well as an expanded waiting area for laboratory and radiology, opened in the fall of 2005.

With the support of more than 575 employees, Otsego Memorial Hospital is the largest employer in Otsego County.

The hospital is located at 825 N. Center Ave. in Gaylord and may be reached at 731-2100.

northern Michigan may be far removed from the daily hustle and bustle of big city life, but it is not void of culture and

art opportunities. Varied opportunities to cultivate an appreciation for the arts can be found here. From stimulating visual art exhibits, to the theater, to music, there is something to please anyone interested in expanding their cultural horizons.

visual artsWhile Gaylord may not feature works of the

Great Masters, it does present ever-changing exhibits of local artists at various locations across the county. The Gaylord Area Council for the Arts (GACA) hosts Arts Week in November each year and the Northern Michigan Artists Guild holds an art sale and exhibition each summer during Alpenfest.

MusicLocal and regional roots-based music takes

center stage at the local music festival Farmfest. Since 1998, Farmfest has attracted a slew of musicians to its rural setting east of Johannesburg.

The yearly festival features a mixture of country, bluegrass, folk, blues and reggae. Visit www.farmhousemusic.org for information, including

the dates of the late summer weekend.Music can also be found every Friday evening

during the summer under the Pavilion on Court in downtown Gaylord.

High school band and choir programs offer opportunities for concerts as well.

performers, writers, crafters and visual artists. GACA offers arts education through workshops and lectures, holds a children’s arts camp each summer and partners with a number of business and organizations, all in support of the arts. For more information on GACA activities or to become a member, call 732-3242.
