Founded in 1903 by Dr. Josephus Hopwood, Lynchburg College is the second oldest college in Virginia to be established as co-educational. Throughout its history, Lynchburg College has maintained strong commitments to the importance of the liberal arts as the basis for education. The College combines liberal education with career development and is dedicated to helping students develop the curiosity and interests that will enrich their private lives, the intellectual and social skills important for success in the public world

of work, and the values and purpose necessary for citizenship in a changing world. The College has more than 100 full-time faculty and an enrollment of more than 2,000 students in undergraduate and graduate study. Thirty-three states and a dozen foreign countries are represented within the multiculturally diverse student body. T h e C o l l e g e ’s s t ro n g academic offerings include thirty-nine major and thirty-nine minor areas of concentration; an honors program; and masters programs in education, business, english, music, and history. The 470-acre Claytor Nature Study Center in nearby Bedford County features a diverse natural learning environment for College students and for the community.

A member of NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), Lynchburg College offers twenty-one intercollegiate sports. The College has produced more than ninety ODAC championships and more than 140 All-America athletes. Through the College’s SERVE (Students Engaged in Responsible Volunteer Service) program, students, faculty, and staff contributed more than 20,000 hours in the 2004-2005 academic year to more than 200 College and community organizations. The Mason Center for Economic Education offers workshops on leadership, workforce development, and information technology. Daura Gallery exhibitions, Theatre productions, Fine Arts and Lecture Series featuring speakers of national and international prominence, and performances by the Lynchburg College Concert and Handbell Choirs, Wind Ensemble, and Dance Company enrich the cultural life of the community. The College is one of only forty colleges and universities nationwide to be recognized in Colleges That Change Lives by former New York Times education editor Loren Pope, and the John Templeton Foundation has twice selected Lynchburg College for its Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges. Two recent Student Government Association presidents received the national Multicultural Student Leader Award from the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) and the Student Government Association and Student Activities Board have received NACA Awards of Excellence.

Lynchburg defeated Denison College in the second-round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, the first victory in NCAA Tournament action in program history, and was a goal away from reaching the final four. During his tenure, Koudelka has recorded an overall record of 128-63, including ten-straight winning seasons. The 2004 team finished 9-5 overall and in 2003, the Hornets won their first title and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second time in program history. The 2003 team finished with a 12-5 record - tying the school record for most wins in a season, and ended the campaign with a #6 national ranking. His 2002 team set a new school record with a seven-game winning streak and reached #13 in the NCAA Division III poll. LC finished 11-4 overall. Koudelka’s 1999 squad posted an 11-5 mark en route to the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. Koudelka was selected to coach at the 2000 North-South All-Star game and

2008 Season in ReviewThe 2008 Lynchburg College men’s lacrosse team finished with a 16-3 overall record along with a 6-0 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). The team won the ODAC Championship for the first time since 2005 and made a return to the NCAA Tournament after missing out in 2007.

The season started out in dramatic fashion on the road against defending national champion Salisbury University. The Hornets were down 10-7 going into the fourth quarter, but LC would score the next two goals with 10:48 remaining to make it a one goal game. LC would hold the Seagulls to zero goals in the fourth quarter and had the ball with less than a minute to go but could not find

the back of the net before falling 10-9.

From then on out, LC would only lose one more game in the regular season and the ODAC tournament, suffering a 14-13 defeat in overtime to Haverford College. After starting the season with a 2-2 record, the Hornets won their next 14 games to enter the NCAA Tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country. Despite being ranked fourth in the USILA Top 20 Coaches Poll, Lynchburg had to travel to Chestertown, MD, to battle the Shoremen of Washington College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hornets season would come to a halt against the Shoremen, suffering a 12-9 defeat.

The 14-game winning streak included convincing victories over nationally ranked Villa Julie College as well as traditional ODAC powers Washington & Lee University, Roanoke

College, and Hampden-Sydney College. The 6-0 mark in the ODAC in the regular season is also a school record for conference wins. The Hornets posted two more decisive victories in the ODAC Tournament. LC earned the #1 seed in the tournament, defeating #4 seed Randolph-Macon College 22-5, who was making its first ever appearance in the tournament. The Hornets faced the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College in the title game, also a newcomer to the tournament, and defeated them 12-6 after coming back from a 5-2 deficit midway through the second quarter.

For their stupendous efforts this season, the Hornets were graciously awarded with numerous accolades. Senior goalie Garrett Curran was tabbed as the ODAC Player of the Year and

The Old Dominion Athletic ConferenceSince 1976

Celebrating its 32nd year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation’s largest Division III conferences. The 14-member ODAC, including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country. The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name change to Old Dominion Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washington & Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with four single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was accepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999. Over the past 15 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III championships in football, men’s basketball, softball, baseball and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2006-07 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 39 NCAA Division III Championships since the ‘93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football, men’s basketball, women’s lacrosse and softball championships.

Governance: The Conference is governed by a 13-member Presidential body consisting of all of the full-time members’ CEOs. Lynchburg’s Dr. Kenneth Garren is the chair of the ODAC Presidents’ Council. In addition to presidential leadership, the conference’s day-to-day operations are supervised by its Board of Directors, which consists of all conference member Directors of Athletics. Sweet Briar Director of Athletics Kelly Morrison serves as the current Board President with Randolph-Macon’s Denis Kanach serving as President-Elect.

Location: The conference office is located in Salem, Virginia at 402B Idaho Street.

Many student-athletes that have helped propel the LC program into national prominence over the last decade. We gave a few a chance to look back and reflect on their Hornet careers.

From Ryan Johnson ‘03When I think back on the different memories I have from playing forLynchburg College there are several things that stand out in my mind. Of course I’ll never forget any of the great games that we played or the feeling that I got when we won our first ODAC championship. However, surprisingly enough, these aren’t the memories that I think of first. Instead it was the time spent hanging out in the dorms over spring break or relaxing in the caf after practice that I miss the most. Without a doubt attending Lynchburg College and having the opportunity to be a part of the men’s lacrosse program has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.

From Andy McKenna ‘99 Lynchburg College has a proud history and reputation as an institution, and is enhanced by its dedication to athletics. That dedication provided the backbone to enhance the lives of those that became and are now part of the Lynchburg College community. For me, the men’s lacrosse program provided a foundation of leadership, hard work and sacrifice that have helped shape who I am today. When a student arrives at Lynchburg College, just like I did, your given an opportunity to be in one of the best Colleges in the country, and if you choose to, become part of a nationally recognized men’s lacrosse program. It is ultimately up to the individual to decide if they want to meet that opportunity and take advantage of it or let it pass.As many know and learn along the way, running a business, managing people and growing a family are tough roads; they are filled with unprecedented challenges and endless demands. For those trying to do all three it can be overwhelming and I can’t stop thinking that had I not been through some tough days in the class room and on the athletic field I wouldn’t be as prepared. Coach Koudelka put a long list of expectations in place and I was driven to meet them for the program, the College and myself. It is that mind set that helped provide a foundation for my later aspirations in the so-called ‘real-world.’ Looking back eight years after graduation its amazing to watch the current team’s success, but I’m not surprised. The path to a National championship is under-way.I’m grateful to the guys I played with, Coach Koudelka and the College. It’s a great day to be a Hornet!

FromAdamTinklepaugh‘06 I have taken so many things from my experience with the team that it’s really hard to put it in words. I met Nick Braun, Charlie and Bob the first weekend and they immediately took the freshmen in with open arms. I could tell early on that the team was a family. Guys like RJ, Logan and Joey Matta were almost like big brothers and really seemed interested in acclimating us to college. One of my most vivid memories is of RJ speaking to the team at one of our first meetings. He had just met with the career center about building his resume and that his GPA was at or below a 3.0. The career center suggested that if his GPA was below a 3.0 it would actually be better to leave it off of his resume. RJ’s message stuck with me throughout school and I think that was one of the biggest driving forces behind what I accomplished academically. The heavy emphasis you put on studying and and school work was something that stood out to me in those early years. I didn’t see that commitment to academics at any of the other schools I was recruited by. On the field, I have enough memories to write a novel. It’s unbelievable to think that during my freshman year we had never beaten W&L and that by my senior year we were playing at Salisbury as the #2 team in the nation. That experience at Salisbury, even though it was a tough loss, was one of the biggest highlights of my lacrosse career. I remember thinking before the game how far and how rapidly the Lynchburg program had improved. We were now a serious contender in Division III and every team seemed to recognize that. Being a part of that team was the best experience of my life so far. Being able to spend those long practices and even longer bus rides with my forty of my best friends is something that I’ll never forget.
