The YMP National Training Weekend is an annual event which is organised each year from region to region. A rewarding outdoor orien- tated weekend course designed to develop problem solving skills, team awareness and motivation. Open to both YMP members and non-members, it’s the perfect opportunity to get away from your normal routine, explore your inner self, network with fellow colleagues from the printing industry and learn how to overcome new challenges. Without personal development training we will never be tested and in turn we will never know what our limits are. This years training will be provided by Inspire, who were established in 2001 and are based nearby to the location of this years activities. Many of you may recognise the name as Paul and his friendly team worked with us at last years NTW. A teams ability to work effectively is a key element to the success of any business in today's environment. Inspire have tailor-made a programme for this year’s NTW that will meet your company's needs, enhance group dynamics and empower personnel. Your team will have the opportunity to spend quality time as a group in unfamiliar surroundings performing a variety of tasks. Some tasks will require lateral thinking, encouragement and others a creative flair. All activities require good team work as the tasks are designed to test the abilities as well as to have fun. Activities are not a test of strength and endurance and are designed to cater for all ages and abilities, Inspire operates a no pressure policy for delegates but does encourage participation by all. Established in 1998, origin- ally to cater for Manchester United’s stadium banners, OMM Print has grown rapidly to become the UK’s leading supplier of large format digital print. Ever wondered how the following print products were produced…? The event was facilitated by Chris Way, OMM Sales Manager, who started with a presentation about OMM Print’s history, (the company, would you believe, started out as a Wedding Photography studio), and an indepth look at the very specialised large format digital print market. Following the presentation, YMP members were given a thorough factory tour, the highlight of which for me was the introduction to the Inca Columbia – the fastest 4- colour flatbed printer in the world. This piece of kit is used for acrylic wall mounts, outdoor signage and pop/pull up free standing displays. We were fortunate enough to witness the press in action and it was amazing to see the quality of colour that was laid down, so quickly, over such a large area, on virtually any substrate up to 40mm in thickness. It’s easy to see how large format digital technology is replacing traditional screen printing for this type of small run work. It was great to see this relatively new technology in action, a fascinating event. The 2005 Young Printer of the Year Award, supported by Independent Paper & the YMP Organisation, is now open for entries. Now in its second year, the £500 cash prize will be awarded to the person who has made the most promising start to a career in the printing industry. Applicants must have joined a UK print related business within the last five years, and they are asked to submit a recent sample of their work, together with a short description their training and personal development to date, showing how they have gained a high standard of competence over the early part of their career. This should be supported by comments from their employer. Mike Gee, managing director of award sponsors, Independent Paper said, “we are delighted to continue to support this important award, which recognises training excellence within the industry. As a major paper merchant we are very keen to show our long term support to the people who represent the future of the printing industry.” Part of the Denmaur Papers Group, Independent Paper is the independent voice of the paper industry and has offices in Wakefield, Warrington, Leicester, Swanley (Kent) and the newly opened Dudley (Birmingham). YMP National Chairman, Andrew Denny added, “I was very impressed by the talent and energy of some of the young people who entered last year’s award and I believe this year’s award should celebrate that. We also wanted to show that the printing industry is a sound career choice for anyone with the right drive and ambition.” For more details of the award: call Sammie Del-Ashby at BPIF Training on 0121 789 5114, or e-mail [email protected] Q. How did you become involved in the print industry? When I was looking for courses to do at University the Print Media Management course at Nottingham Trent University sounded interesting, so after completing my HND and then BA (Hons) degree I continued on into print itself. Q. What has been the most significant change in your business in the last 2 years? A flattening of the management structure and becoming more aware that the company must have a product/service that offers more than the competition. Q. What have been your best and worst moments working in the industry? The best moments are ongoing when customers ring up or email to say that you have exceeded their expectations and they love the product. The worst moment is that sinking feeling when the customer rings you to tell an important piece of information that they have just remembered about a job and its on the lorry… Q. How long have you been a YMP member, and what do you like best about the YMP? I have been a member for four and a half years, the best bit aboutYMP is meeting other members. It’s nice to get to know other people that work in your region as well as the people you meet nationally at Conference. Q. What other interests do you have other than YMP involvements? I am quite outdoors’y so I enjoy walking, camping (4 star toilets a must!) and visiting historic places.I like my food so eating out is always of interest, as is gardening and running to burn it all off again. I follow the Leicester Tigers rugby team as well as the dreaded Arsenal, overall I quite like a lot of things but none to the extreme. Q. What would be your dream job? My dream job would be winning the lottery and then having to spend the money afterwards – I feel this would require full time attention but I would be prepared to put in the effort. Q. If you were stuck on a desert island and you could take one book, one CD, and one item of food, who and what would they be? One book – The Belgariad (Omnibus Edition) – by David Eddings. One CD – Reload – Tom Jones. Food – A hog roast (full size pig) – hopefully by the time I have eaten that someone will have noticed I am missing!!! Robert Horne are the market leaders in paper distribution, with 1000 employees in the U.K alone, and a turnover of over £375m. The Northampton branch is the central site that supplies its 18 regional distribution centres within the UK. The warehouse delivers 1500 tonnes of paper daily and stocks 25,000 tonnes at any given time – a cool 50,000 pallets. The visit gave the YMP group a great appreciation of how complex the logistics of their 24 hour operation is, in supplying the whole of the UK with the next day service that Robert Horne promise to give. From receipt of an order the central warehouse in Northampton can fulfil and deliver paper the very next day to places as far a field as Aberdeen. The same site is also responsible for despatching paper samples, and can pick trim, pack and despatch thousands of samples every week. It really was a fascinating experience to be in the loading bay area watching so many forklift trucks racing around with incredible precision. As one RH manager stated ‘it’s almost like watching a ballet’. YMP members were also treated to a quick look at RH’s highly technical ‘development and test laboratory’ where technicians can test paper qualities such as rigidity, whiteness, brightness, and opacity to name but a few. During the visit RH also stressed that their products and business operations have an influence on the environment so therefore they go to great lengths to adopt environmental poli- cies that go beyond the requirements of environ- mental standards and legis- lation. A much enjoyed and eye-opening visit, especially for those YMP members who previously thought it was as simple as…picking up the phone? Personal Development Planner (PDP)The start of the new season this September sees thelaunch of the Personal Development Planner (PDP), anexciting new training initiative designed for both existingand new YMP members. The PDP will help members toidentify their personal training and development needs, will provide them with support to achieve them, and willat last provide a recognised training certificate that willbecome established throughout the industry.

What are the main objectives of the PDP?‘to enable the YMP to stick to, and improve, what ittraditionally does best – ongoing training anddevelopment through regional and national events, but provide a tangible framework on which to hangthis development training’

Enable the YMP to become a nationallyrecognised professional training and developmentorganisation

Fulfil a need to provide a flexible but structuredtraining programme to people in the industry

Provide a tangible training product that will bemarketable but flexible, allowing members toachieve accreditation at their own pace

Ensure that regional events are tailored to meetlocal members’ training and development needs

In a nutshell…The PDP will assist YMP’s to identify their training anddevelopment needs. By attending events and loggingthe experience in the PDP pack YMP’s are accreditedwith training points. Once a given number of points areachieved the YMP hands the forms to be read andsigned off by their employer – this direct involvementwith the employer is crucial to the PDP’s success. Theforms can then be sent to the BPIF who will return themwith a ‘Certificate of Achievement’ and the YMP thenmoves to the next level of development.
