This sec tion of the guide is very imp ortantand should be examinedcarefully as it inc ludes the founda tions of m aking b ig mo ney on

Runescape. These t ips will make mone y making a lot easier, faster, and

mo re e ffic ient. Effic ient use o f time is very imp ortant when making money

on Runescape a s the m ore time you save, the more time you ha ve spare

to use m aking even mo re m oney!

The p rices in this guide should b e fairly up to date but d ue to thefac t that p ric es on Runescap e often c hang e from d ay to day, we

rec om me nd tha t you chec k a ll p rices you see in this guide on the

Grand Exchang e.

If you are in doubt a bout any aspe c ts of the ga me, then chec k outthe Runescape Know led ge Base on the official Runescape w eb site.

It c an be ve ry useful if you wa nt to know, for exam ple, how m any

a ir runes per essenc e you c an make for your runec ra fting leve l.

Anyone c an bec om e ric h on Runescape with this guide, even if youare a level 3 playe r fresh o ff Tuto rial Island . Being a high level

doesn t necessarily mean you w ill be rich, espec ia lly if you ve b een

spending yo ur money leve ling skills. This guide w ill be even more

high level.

money on Runescape. You have m ore skills to train, more d rop s to

com ing bac k! After selling an item to a buyer for the first time you

must be sure to tell them if you ll be selling the same item in the

The a mount of time saved by not having to find new buyers can be

huge! There a re som e item s tha t are d ifficult to sell on the Grand

Exchange , so keep ing a buyer tab le simila r to the one b elow is

useful for suc h items.

the ir world? Buyers like it when sellers go to them, and if it sec ures the sa le

Tip : Although the trade limits ma kes it ha rd to b e ripped off by muc h,

chec k out the Grand Exchang e if you a re unsure a bout the va lue o f the

ma y also help to stand near the Grand Exchang e a nd let othe r

p layers know tha t you ha ve a n item for sa le on it.

As a gene ra l rule, busy worlds are bet ter for selling. Items on theGrand Exchange a ren t a ffec ted by this, but if you a re a dvertising

your item then b eing on a b usy world will a llow mo re p eop le to see

you spea k.

Tip : Places of c onvenienc e a re a lso g rea t for selling. For exam ple, if

som eone is a t the d uel arena they ma y be willing to pay a higher price for

food than norma l bec ause it saves them a trip to the Grand Exchang e

and they nee d the food to c ont inue the ir duels! Exp loiting these higherprices due to loc ation c an help you get a higher price for your item.

Tip : A g rea t example of non-mem ber wo rlds that ma y have peop le selling

cheaper is limpwurt roots. Non-members have absolutely no use for

limpwurt roo ts or limp s so they ma y sell these to you a t a red uced price

just to get rid of them. How ever, with the introd uc tion of the Grand

Exchange, the ab ility to exploit this has dec rea sed considerab ly.

Therefore, we do not rec ommend you go to non-memb er wo rlds

espec ially to exploit this tip , but do reco mm end you keep an eye out

when you hap pen to be on a non-memb er world for another rea son.

Optional: Tra in your com bat to ma ke sure you do no t d ie w hilstwalking around Runescape, such as by random events. Level 20+

com bat is rec om mended but is not essential, a lthoug h without it

may be risky.

In game, whilst selling your likely to have a t most 100 peop le see what

your charac ter is saying a t any one time . On the Grand Exchange you

have a ccess to millions of p otential buyers! To get to the Grand Exchangejust w a lk North through the Varroc ks West Bank and c ontinue up the

path. The o ffic ia l Runescape w eb site knowledgeb ase a rticles have a ll the

information you w ill nee d to use it. If you re ha ving troub le b uying or selling

an item at the m aximum or minimum pric e then you c ould try stand ing

nea r the Grand Exchang e on a b usy world and telling p eop le w hat you

are t rying to buy and sell and for wha t p rice. By advertising your item on

the G rand Exchange , you m ay find a buyer/ seller this wa y.

Apart from the G rand Exchange, you c an a lso use the forums. On the

forums hundred s if not thousand s of p eop le ha ve the chanc e to see wha t

you a re selling and even try and outb id ea ch other in order to sec ure thepurc hase. The Grand Exchange has ma de the forums less imp ortant for

selling, and the only benefit the forum rea lly g ives you now is if you a re

looking for rep ea t b uyers (pe op le who will consistently buy an item from

you). Desperate buyers ma y also use the forum, a llow ing you to m ake a

bit o f extra cash buy selling d irec tly to them a t the ma ximum price . The

best forums to use a re the o ffic ia l Runesc ape fo rums loc ated on the left

naviga tion b a r a t ww w.runescape.com . Plea se no te: To p ost in the forums

you will have to be a memb er on Runescap e, but free players can view

them and use the pm system on Runescape in order to ma ke purcha ses

or sell items.

Tip : For new users a post on a forum is a message on the forum b y a

forum memb er. A threa d is a c ollec tion of message s respond ing to an

Want to know the pric e/ value of an item?

For a rough e stimate o f the p ric e o f an item, just go to the G randExchange d atabase on the o ffic ial Runescape web site. Just type the item

you wa nt to know the value of into the sea rch bar, and c lic k it on the

results sc reen. The market p ric e of the item is likely to b e very c lose to its

ac tual value.

General Tips Closing Comments

Being rich on Runesc ape should not be linked to yo ur Runescape leve l. In

other wo rds, there is no rea son low levels c an t be a s rich as high leve ls.

Whilst p laying Runescape you may notice tha t ma ny high levels appea r

riche r than low levels. This is due to the fac t tha t high leve ls have, in

general, spent mo re time p laying the gam e so ha ve more expe rienc e o f

ma king mo ney on it. Nearly a ll very rich p layers have m ade their fortune

not because of their levels or skills, but by using techniques such as those

found in this guide . There a re exceptions to this rule, but very few .

So if you re a strugg ling level 10 on Runescape, don t think of thethousand s of hours youll need to p ut in to bec om e a ma ster craftsma n or

wood cutter, but o f the millions of gp that c an a lso be ab le to m ake a t

your level.

Beginners:Making your first 100,000gp !

This sec tion o f the guide is for p layers who have no or very little g p. To

beg in making your millions you ll need wha t we c a ll spa re c hange . This isaround 100,000gp and this sec tion exp lains a fe w q uick and ea sy tips to

ge t this! You ll then be a b le to use it to move onto the mo re a dva nced

methods!

Firstly, as advised in the Genera l Tips sec tion a bove you can make som e

mone y just by selling the items in your bank that you no long er use o r have

no use for. These include item s you may have boug ht to c om plete a

quest that you have left over. Other item s you have tha t you do no t often

use are a lso wo rth selling if you do not have muc h spare g p. Item s in your

bank are o ften losing the ir va lue in the long run unless they are rare items.This me ans tha t if you sell them now you c an usua lly buy them aga in for

the sam e p rice o r cheape r onc e your mo ney problems have be en sorted !

Mining Rune Essenc e

This is a steady gp ea rner tha t a lso g a ins you va luab le m ining e xperienc e.

In order to d o it you must have c om pleted the ve ry simple: Rune

Mysteries Non-mem ber Quest. Wield the best p ic kaxe you can and wa lk

south from Varroc k East b ank to the Varroc k Rune Shop. Right c lic k theshop keeper (Aubury) to teleport you to a rune essenc e a rea . Click on the

roc ks to mine them and fill your invento ry. Teleport out of the mining a rea ,

wa lk north to the nearest bank and dep osit the essenc e. You should b e

ab le to mine up to 28 rune essenc e p er trip.

Note: If you a re a non-member you c an only mine norma l essenc e, which

you ca n sell for ab out 60 gp each and can b e mined no ma tter what

your mining level is. If, however, you a re a mem ber you c an mine PURE

essenc e w hich can be sold fo r approxima tely 140gp e ach. To m ine pure

essenc e, howe ver, you need a mining level of 30 or mo re. This level isea sily a tta inab le by just m ining the va rious cop per, tin, and iron roc ks tha t

can b e found a ll over Runescape .

Each trip mining pure essenc e can therefore ea rn you 4480gp , which is a

substantia l amo unt c om pared to the rela tively little time you will spend

per trip . Try and sell in ba tc hes of 1000, and you will ea rn a bout 160,000gp

per 1000 pure essenc e! All of this is pure p rofit a nd yours to keep , so get

mining!

Tip : By not w ea ring any armour, or taking a ny item s, you leave m ore room

for essenc e a nd a llow yourself to run for longer pe riods of t ime. Both of

these mea n faster money!

Note: There a re 5 NPCs in Runesc ape tha t c an te leport you to the Rune

Essenc e M ine. Only the first tw o are a va ilab le to f2p p layers.

mini-quest).

You c an hold one pouc h of ea ch type in your inventory, allow ing you to

hold 26 extra essence! This is a lmost d oub le the amount o f essenc e you

Method:

Ta lk to Wiza rd Distentor in the Ma gic Guild to te lep ort to the Rune Essencemining area . Mine a s muc h essenc e a s you c an (54 is the m aximum if you

have a ll of the p ouc hes). Now return to the m agic g uild and wa lk to

Yanille Bank (opposite the guild ) to dep osit them. And rep ea t. Selling a t

160gp per pure essenc e, you ll make 8,640g p PER TRIP! This gives you

approxima tely 360,000gp per hour, whic h is a very dec ent w age. Each

ind ividua l trip only takes a few minutes, so this is a grea t way of m aking

cash if you meet the requirem ents for the ultima te metho d.

Water Filled Vials (Members)

The shop s on Runesc ape c an be exp loited . If you c an buy an item fo r a

shop and sell it on for mo re to othe r p layers, then you can ma ke money.

An e xample o f this is reselling w a ter filled vials. There are a number of

stores tha t sell vials of w a ter includ ing Sigmund the Merchant in the

ma rketp lace of Rellekka , the genera l store in Mortto n, the Lighthouse

sto re, Jiminua s sto re o n Karamja. The best shop, how ever, is the sto re

selling w ate r via ls near the bank in Shilo Village. There the via ls cost 11gp

ea ch. Simply buy the via ls from the shop and dep osit them in the nea rby

ba nk. When w ea ring items that red uce your weight a s desc ribed a t the

sta rt of this guide you c an buy four full invento ries in approximate ly two

and a ha lf minutes befo re you can no long er run. If Shilo Village is not an

op tion then you c an use the shop in Ardo ugne and de po sit them in either

of the c itys banks. Buying from Ardougne is, however, about 80% as fast

as collec ting from Shilo Village.

Onc e you ha ve b oug ht as ma ny via ls as you want (eve ry via l you buy is

sure to ma ke a p rofit, so buy as ma ny as you c an) you c an resell these

via ls full of wa ter for ap proxima tely 85gp 100gp on the Grand Exc hange.

Find ing a permanent buyer who is tra ining Herblore m ay ea rn you ahigher price d ue to c onvenience , or ma y be useful if you a re ha ving

troub le selling on the G rand Exchange.

The approximate profit per hour at Shilo Village is 2,500 x 93 = 205,000gp or

2,000 x 93 = 186,000gp if you a re buying from Ardougne.

Air Rune Running :

Air runes, nature runes, and law runes are the three runes tha t runners are

currently need ed for a lot. Running essenc e is when p layers take un-noted essenc e to a rune c ra fting a lter for a p layer tra ining rune c ra fting.

The p layers who bring essence are pa id for the ir effo rts using g p , runes,

and noted essenc e. The rune c ra fter pays for this servic e b ec ause it saves

him the time o f constantly banking, a llow ing him to c ra ft runes the w hole

time and ga in experienc e a lot fa ster.

To find a rune c ra fter who needs runners there a re two effec tive wa ys:

1. Use the themed wo rld for running essence. These a re c urrentlyWorld 16 for running a ir runes. World 36 for running na ture runes.

World 66 and World 99 for running law runes.

2. Use the Runescape fo rums. Yes, we keep ment ioning the offic ialRunescape forums found at ww w.runescap e.com but they really

are tha t useful! Sea rch law running , a ir running , or na ture

running and your ll find threa ds by runec ra fters loo king for runners

to he lp them . Going to the the med wo rlds is, however, ea sier.

There a re no w two methods of m aking money b y running a irs. By using the

assist op tion, or by t rad ing.

Using the Assist System:

1. Hea d to the a ir a lte r, found in the g rassy area just south west of thesouthern Falador exit.

2. Ma ke sure you b ring 28 un-noted essenc e a nd an a ir talisma n (tiararec om mended to save on inventory spac e). You c an e ither mine

the se essenc es yourself (see Mining Essence above) or just buy

them from anothe r p layer as you only need 28.

3. Look for a ir c ra fters who will be announc ing the numb er of a irs tha tyou w ill get for each essenc e you g ive them . Obv iously try and

choose the c ra fter who is offering the highest va lue, as you w ill ge t

more b ack. To b e sure tha t they are telling the truth ab out this it is a

good ide a to chec k their rune c ra fting sta t on the o ffic ial

Runescape w eb site. This is bec ause som e p layers may pretend they

can m ake mo re than they ac tually ca n in orde r to c onvince

pe op le to give them essenc e. The ta ble b elow, from the o ffic ia l

4. Rune essenc e costs a round 45gp, so make sure you selec t arunec ra fter who will return you a profit. I.e. At least 5 a irs per

essence.

5. Onc e you ve selec ted your crafte r, right c lick and req uest a ssist( req assist ). You will see a message saying that you a re being

assisted , and you c an then c lick on the a lter and c ra ft the a ir runes.

Onc e you have finished c ra fting you ll rec eive the a ir runes (a

mo nster. Ma ke sure you have runes rea dy to c ast te lekinetic grab on a nydrop s you w ant to keep. This lesser demon o ften d rop s Rune Medium

Helmets worth about 11,500 gp ea ch! If you a re a memb er you c an high

a lch (ma gic spell) these Rune Med ium Helms right awa y for a coo l

11,523gp or just sell it on the Grand Excha nge for slightly less! If you want

to train ma ge or rang e a nyway, then this is a g ood method to earn a b it

of c ash while you train.

The Wonders of Flax (m embers)

Collecting:

Hea d to the flax field south ea st o f Seers Village a nd next to the b eehives

and sta rt c ollec ting flax. There a re absolutely no req uirem ents needed to

do this! Once you have a full invento ry hea d to Seers bank to dep osit the

flax and rep ea t. Once you ha ve 1000 flax you ll be a b le to sell them for

about 75gp ea ch, making you 75,000gp in pure profit!

Spinning:

An a lternative to selling the flax, which req uires a level 10 in c ra fting, is to

sp in it into b ow strings. Simp ly get the flax you c ollec ted, buy flax fromano ther player or buy it from the Grand Exchang e, and take it to a

sp inning wheel. You can then use the flax on the sp inning wheel to turn it

into bow strings tha t c an be sold fo r around 180gp ea ch! This mo re than

doub les the va lue o f your flax! If you b oug ht the flax in orde r to sp in then

you w ould have ma de 140% profit! Investing 1,000,000gp wo uld get you

the 1,000,000 bac k as well as a further 1,400,000gp profit!

To dec ide whe ther you w ould find it w orth it to spin flax into bow strings for

money fo llow these steps:

1. Go to the Grand Exchang e a nd sea rch for the current p rices ofboth Flax and Bow Strings.

2. Find the d ifferenc e in price betw een the two. This d ifferenc e (theprice o f bow strings minus the p rice of flax) gives you the amo unt o f

profit you a re likely to rec eive fo r every bow string you sp in.

3. Multiply this d ifference by 1000. It is likely to g ive you a figure o faround 100,000 gp . You c an think of this as your wage or p ay fo r

performing the ta sk of spinning 1000 bow strings. If you th ink this is

high enough then buy the flax, sp in it, and sell the bow strings you

ma ke b ac k to the Grand Exchange .

Skill Specialisation (Skills)

Like in the rea l world, making mo ney throug h skills on Runescape is a ll

about spec ialisa tion. When getting a job in rea l life, to get the m ost

mo ney from their job p eop le spec ialise in one a rea , such as banking,

tea ching, driving , or writing . Know ing a little about ea ch of the five real lifejob s given ab ove would no t land the pe rson a high end job at a lead ing

bank. Spec ialising in banking , however, will mea n the p erson ha s a lot o f

know led ge ab out b anking a nd is muc h mo re likely to g et a highly pa id

ba nking job!

We can apply the abo ve spe c ia lisa tion theory to the world of Runesc ap e.

To make b ig m oney b y skills you must spec ialise in one a rea . Having a

slayer leve l of 90, for examp le, gives you a ma jor advantage ove r othe r

p layers as you ll be a b le to slay monsters to get high va lue items suc h as

abyssa l whips. Only a sma ll percentage o f othe r p layers can do the same ,so the va lue of these item s will be high. If you spent your time t ra ining a ll

your skills to leve l 30, instead of spec ialising in slaye r, hundreds of

thousands of o ther playe rs wo uld have a t least the same leve l as you a nd

the va lue of item s you g et from slayer drops wo uld be m uc h less than if it

was 90!

Fishing (skills)

Fishing is a fairly good wa y of g etting som e sta rt-up c ash before you

mo ve on to the rea l mo ney making methods. Fish is in hot dem andthroug hout the land, so fish till you d rop to ea rn tha t 100k tha t you c an

then use to ma ke even mo re. It w ill take a little while a lthoug h you get XP

with every fish you c oo k! Ob viously the higher your level, the b et ter the

fish, and the mo re d em and there is for that fish. No m atter wha t fish you

dec ide to sell, and make sure you sell in the correc t a rea . This is either on

the Runescape fo rums, in a rea s whe re p layers would need food , or, more

likely, on the Grand Exchange. These inc lude a rea s nea r mini-ga mes tha t

req uire food suc h as Clan Wars or bounty hunter. Selling in these a rea s

with lots of b uyers mea ns you ll be a b le to sell your fish faster and make

mone y faster. To find even mo re p layers to buy your food, use the

them ed wo rlds by go ing to, for exam p le, the Clan Wars or Bounty Hunter

wo rlds. Fishing, however, is not a very fast w ay to make m one y, so is not

rec omm ended a fter youve mad e some spa re cha nge .

Woodcutting (Skills)

This is, by fa r, one o f the slowest of the b eg inner method s to m ake mo ney.

We would only rec om mend it if you have a high woodcutting level and

can c ut yew logs or mag ic log s. You m ay not rea lize tha t ma gic logs cansell for 1.2k ea ch! Tha t s 33.6k for ea ch full invento ry you get- they are

ava ilab le to be c ut by memb ers South o f Seers Bank. If you d o no t have a

very high w oodc utting level we would rec om mend staying a wa y from this

method as the lower logs are not w orth enough to ma ke fast mo ney.

With the relea se o f the c onstruc tion skill, you c an com bine wood cutting

with ma king p lanks, which you c an then sell (memb ers only). Oak log s

ma y only sell for 25gp ea ch, but turn them into oa k planks and their va lue

inc rea ses to 450gp . The rea son this happens, how ever, is bec ause of the

time it takes to m ake the logs into p lanks and the fa c t tha t the sawm ill

op erator north-east of Va rroc k, who c uts your log s into p lanks c harges a250gp fee per log . This mea ns the p rofit made b y turning logs into p lanks is

175gp per plank but this is still 700%! So a ll the money you invest in oak logs

will see a return of 700% mea ning your money is multiplied by 7. This

me thod is, however, slow and is not advised a fter you ha ve finished

ma king your spa re c hang e to use on m ore a dva nced me thod s. If you

choose to cut the o ak log s yourself then a ll the m oney you ma ke p er

p lank (200gp ) is pure profit.

Drop Parties

This method is not reliab le in any way, and is only rea lly for those p layers

who a re considerab ly poor. Drop Parties are held a t Party Petes in

Falado r and give you a c hance to pop ba lloons, which ma y co ntain

item s dona ted by othe r p layers. If you see a party tha t has a rea sona b le

do nated item c hest and a sma ll c row d o f pa rty goe rs then it ma y be

advisab le to have a go yourself. Hundred s of m illions of gp are c ollec t by

p layers a t parties eve ry day, so c ross your fingers and have a go!

In the long term this isn t a me thod to financ e your Runescape p laying,but you c ould ge t lucky and bec om e an instant milliona ire, get a go od

drop at a d rop pa rty, or at the very least have som e fun.

Collec ting Herbs Members

These he rbs can be ob ta ined for free ! Simp ly p ick them up off o f the floo r.

The best p lac e to c ollec t the m is in Edgeville Dungeon s Wilderness. Go to

the wilderness leve l 2 and you will see Chaos Druids (leve l 13). Kill them

and youll find that quite o ften they d rop a variety of he rbs, which you

can then ta ke to the bank a fter you ha ve a full invento ry. Herbs va ry in

price c onsiderab ly. Gua ms, for exam ple, are worth ap proxima tely 450gp

ea ch. Ranarr weed s, on the other hand , are wo rth a pp roxima tely

5,500gp . La rge a mo unts of money can, therefore, easily be ma de b y this

simp le me thod . 1000 Ranarr Weeds wo uld ea rn you wa y ove r 5 million gp !

Collec ting herbs ma y take you a little while, but you will ga in fight ing

experienc e and the rewa rds a re very great! Almost anyone c an becom ea milliona ire throug h this me thod within no time!

Tip : Watc h your hea lth ba r! You w ill be collec ting from a dang erous

area . The Chaos Druids are only leve l 13, so m ost p laye rs should ha ve no

wo rked. Now here is how to run law and nature runes!

For those o f you tha t skipped the beg inners sec tion running essence is

when players take un-note d essenc e to a rune c ra fting a lter for a p layer

training rune c ra fting. The p layers who b ring essenc e a re p a id for the ir

effo rts using g p , runes, or noted essence. The rune c ra fter pa ys for this

service bec ause it saves him the time of c onstantly banking, allow ing him

to c raft runes the w hole time and ga in experienc e a lot fa ster.

To find a rune c ra fter who needs runners there a re two effec tive wa ys:

1. Use the themed wo rld for running essence. These a re c urrentlyWorld 36 for running na ture runes and World 66 and World 99 for

running law runes.

2. Use the o fficia l Runesc ape fo rums. Yes, we kee p mentioning theoffic ial Runescape forums found a t w ww .runescape .com , but they

rea lly a re tha t useful! Sea rch law running , a ir running , or na ture

running and youll find threads by rune crafters looking for runners

to he lp them . Going to the the med wo rlds is, however, ea sier.

Law running:

1. You w ill need to ta ke som e un-noted pure essenc e, to wea r acharged Amulet of Glory (op tiona l), and not to wear armour or

swo rds as they a ren t a llow ed by the m onks.

2. To g et to the law a lter sta rt o ff from Draynor Bank and hea d to PortSarim. Ta lk to the Monks to g et a boa t ride to Entrana .

3. Onc e a t Entrana , head ea st until you rea ch a c hap el beforeheading north and continuing o ver the b ridge . You w ill then reac h

the law a lter!

4. Wait for a law c rafter to say op en and trad e them your unnotedpure essenc e. You will rec eive 27 Noted Pure Essence and 27 law

runes. If you a re w ea ring an Am ulet of Glory use it to return toDraynor Bank, and if you a re no t then w a lk ba ck the wa y you

came . You c an then repea t the proc ess as ma ny times as you like!

5. Each trip will get you 27 law runes tha t c an be sold for ab out 300gpea ch making a p rofit of 8100gp per trip. In a pproxima tely 123 trips

you c an ma ke 1,000,000gp p rofit and be com e a milliona ire!

Nature Running :

1. The Nature Alter is loc ated just north o f Shilo Village on Karamja.2. Item s req uired are no ted essenc e, som e g p , a spac e for na ture

runes, and an antipoison b ec ause there a re leve l 32 NPCs tha t will

try and poison you nea r the a lter.

3. Instea d of banking essenc e you need to sell them to the nea rbygenera l store (north west of the Nature Alter) and buy them ba c k as

un-no ted. This is bec ause the nearest b ank is in Shilo Village, which

has high leve l zom bies, req uires a d ifficult quest to enter, and isfurther awa y. You the refore need abo ut 3/4gp pe r pure essenc e to

buy them b ack from the g enera l store. Othe rs ma y try and stea l

your essenc e d uring this proc ess so try to b e quick!

4. Trade the un-noted essenc e with the Nature Rune Crafters and youwill rec eive na ture runes and noted pure essenc e.

5. Go to the g enera l store and rep ea t this p roc ess until you have thenumber of na ture runes you req uire. Then you c an sell the na ture

runes for up to 300gp ea ch, in a lmo st p ure p rofit!

Alternat ively you c an run Nature Runes from Al Kha rid bank (27 at a time)but you m ust have a lot of c harged Amulets of Glory, and have done the

Grand Tree Que st and Heroes Quest. Equip your Amulet of G lory and run

to the Gnom e G lider and take it to The Grand Tree and then To Karamja.

Go to the Nature Temp le a nd c om plete the trade a s abo ve before using

the Amulet of G lory to return to Al Kharid. Rep ea t as muc h as you like.

Making money from comba t (skills)

We re g oing to m ake this sec tion short. Going through eve ry single

monster and there d rop s may sound impressive, but most p layers know

which monsters drop the b est drop s and ho w to kill them (and if you don t

then just visit runehq.com and chec k out the mo nster da tabase!). This

guide is ab out m aking m oney, and the tips below a re a ll you need to

make money by comb at.

When making m oney b y co mb at you should pick a monster to fight tha t

ga ins you the most p rofit. There is no point fight ing a monster tha t w ill cost

you 3k in food every time you d efeat it, when its drop is only worth 600gp .

In this case youd be LOSING money, so be c a reful wha t you c hoose to

fight. Money ma king is a ll about using your time efficiently and effec tively.

Co llec ting b ig bones from giants and limp wurt roo ts from hob go blins are

two of the b est pa ying d rop s that a re a lmost a lwa ys d rop ped when you

de feat the monster.

Hill giants can be found in the d ungeon in Edgeville, which is just south o f

Edgeville Bank. With d rop s includ ing b ig bones and limps (me ntioned

ab ove), you c an ma ke a lot of money and ge t comb at experience a t the

same t ime. The Hill Giants a re only level 28 so if you re level 40+ you ll have

no p rob lem killing these. Bank at Edge ville if you need food and you c an

dep osit your limps and b ig bones whilst you re a t it. Alwa ys make sure

wha t you are getting from mo nsters is mo re tha n the food tha t you are

consuming is wo rth, but in this case it d efinitely should b e!

We don t rea lly rec om me nd killing monsters as a long term wa y to make

big m oney, but if you a re training your comb at anyway you might as we llpick a monster that w ill inc rea se your ba nk ba lance a t the sam e time!

Killing mo nsters tha t have just b een released in a new update by Jage x is

the single best way to m ake mo ney from killing NPCs (Non p layer

charac ters). We m ad e a fortune in the God Wars upd ate by g etting a

Bandos hilt d rop in the first c oup le o f days the update wa s out and selling

it for 30,500,000gp!

So if there is an upd ate a nd you have a high enough leve l to kill the newmonsters (with a new item d rop ) then sta rt killing them as soo n a s possible!

The first few d rop s of any new item usua lly sell for ove r 5 times wha t their

price d rop s to a fter a coup le o f weeks!

Barrow s is anothe r go od p lac e to get good d rop s if your leve l is high

enough (level 90+ rec om mended), although we wont g o into de tails

there. If you re a high leve l Runescape mem ber then you ll know exac tly

Merchanting: Seize the opportunity

Merchanting as it is known on Runescape, is the p roc ess of b uying item s

low and selling them high. With the up date of the Grand Exchang e a nd

trade restric tions, the o rig ina l mercha nting m etho d of b uying and selling

to p layers is no-longer very viab le. This guide teaches you the new

merchanting me thod s of using the Grand Exc hange la ter on but it must

be noted that the o riginal method does still work to a certain extent.

Som e p eop le may wish to g et rid of items quickly without bothe ring to g o

to Varroc k and sell on the G rand Exchange. They m ay a lso b e ha ving

prob lem s selling on the G rand Exchange so look to trad e d irec tly topeop le. If you no tice som eone on your travels who is selling a t a price far

low er than its va lue (use the Grand Exchange Data base on

www.runescape.com to find out a n items ma rket va lue) then it ma y be

wo rth buying it off them a nd selling on at the Grand Exc hange for more.

Herblore Shop (Taverly):

Trade w ith Ja tix, buy as much as you c an, and return to Fa lador Bank. You

can buy vials for 5gp ea ch, and e ye of new t for 3gp each. Fill the vials

with wa ter and they c an be sold fo r about 90gp ea ch, or just sell the vials

a lone for roug hly 80gp ea ch. Eyes of newt a re a lwa ys in dem and as they

are useful for Herblore a nd it takes time to collec t them so m any players

buy them.

Buying via ls for 5gp ea ch and selling for 80gp ea ch g ives a profit of

approximate ly 1600%!

Buying eye of newts for 3gp ac h and selling for abo ut 60gp ea ch gives a

profit o f approximate ly 2000%!

These p rofits a re huge so b uying these items is a situa tion w here you w ill

defiantly profit. It is impossible to lose mone y if you b uy these items from

the Herblore shop!

Making money through inc reasing the va lue of items

Som e items on Runescape a re p art of a va lue c ha in.

Tip: The definition of a va lue cha in is a set of linked , value-c rea ting

ac tivities, rang ing from sec uring basic raw ma teria ls (e.g. c ollec ting flax)

to the delivery of fina l p rod uc ts (e.g. trad ing a strung yew longbow ).

Items that a re p art of a value c hain can b e a dd ed to or imp roved on to

get to the next stage in the cha in. This will often ea rn you a profit. For

examp le, flax could be bo ught from the Grand Exchang e a nd spun into

bow strings. The bow strings could then be sold bac k to the Grand

Exchange for more tha n the flax cost to b uy. Your wage is effec tively the

d ifferenc e b etw een the c ost of the ma teria ls (in this case the flax) and the

price you sold the end prod uc t fo r (in this case the bow strings).

Wages are determined in the w orld of Runesc ap e simp ly by the amount

of p eop le that a re w illing to perform such jobs a t such a p rice . The

wa ge s for performing m enial tasks a re a c tua lly far higher than they

should b e. Ma ny runescapers do not rea lise the p ossibility of doing these

job s. This can be tho ught of a s a red uced labour supp ly relative to the

labour de ma nd than it should be, lead ing to highe r wages. This is grea t

new s for money m akers!

For examp le, the wa ge when sp inning bow strings is the p rice you got forselling the bowstrings minus the cost of the flax (180 80 = 100gp per

bow string ). Therefo re, you c an m ake 100,000gp per 1k bowstrings spun.

This me thod c an be used on a huge numb er of item s. Before p erforming

va lue increa sing tasks you need to c onsider the ec onomic viab ility of your

choice o f task. Just look up the p rices of the fina l p rod uc t and the

ma terials youll need to p rod uce the final produc t and you ll see how

muc h profit you can ma ke (fina l p rod uc t price c ost of ma teria ls = profit).

You can see if a p roc ess is worth doing by assessing whether the time or

effort req uired to g et from the m ateria ls to the final produc t is wo rth the

profit.

Ano ther example is to buy Iron Ore, and turn it into iron ba rs, be fore selling

it b ack to the Grand Exchange (using the ring of fo rging in this case is

recommended).

Tip : If you a re loo king to train a skill suc h as c ra fting, use this method to

ea rn m oney whilst ga ining xp! Whilst t ra ining certa in skills was often

Having g ood know led ge o f Runescape a nd its future updates is very

Game upd ate s have a huge e ffect o n the p rice o f som e items. For

examp le, when the runec rafting guild wa s announce d as c oming shortly

to Runescape, the p rice o f rune essenc e skyroc keted bec ause m any

mo re p layers wa nted to leve l the skill to 50 in order to be a b le to ac cess

the new guild . Buying rune essenc e a s soo n as Jagex hinted about this

hap pe ning a nd selling it on for p rofit as the upda te happ ened would

have m ad e you a tidy p rofit.

Another examp le is that the upd a te on 9th Sep tem ber 2008, which me ant

tha t p layers c ould use a chisel on a la rge b loc k of g ranite to cut it into

sma ller b loc ks for use a s Summoning ing red ients. In this insta nc e the price

of g ranite inc rea sed by an extraordinary amount. The increa se over

117,000% mea nt that if you ha d invested just 1 million gp into Granite (5kg)

be fore the upd ate , you w ould have rec eived ap proxima tly1174 million g p

ba c k that d ay if you then sold the g ranite. If youd invested 1m gp you

would have made over 1 billion gp in just one da y! This update w as

imp ossib le to p red ic t, but show s just how muc h c ould b e m ade. As soon

as this upd a te w as released , you should have log ged in and bo ught a s

muc h of this granite a s you c ould (provided you c ould g et it for a

reasonable price).

The Grand Exc hang e (GE) has revolutionised Runescape . It has

completely change the dynam ics of both the Runescape ec onomy and

the entire ga me. With millions of buye rs and sellers at your finger tips, theGrand Exc hange has bec om e THE NUMBER ONE WAY to make big money

for those that know how. The fac t that most players do not recognise the

opportunities that the Grand Exchange has created , has meant that those

that use it to ma ke money have even g reater rewards availab le to them.

Playing for minutes a d ay can m ake m illions with the right know how and

a hint of luck. But it is not down to just luck, it is down to the skills and

inside information that we are going to transfer to you!

This sec tion has been deve loped with help from a University Student who is

worlds leading Universities!

For those w ho ha ve read our lea d ing guides in the p ast, this new wa y of

me rchanting ma y seem very different. Jagex has effec tively rem oved the

three most c om mon merc hanting d imensions from the game

(north/south, ea st/ west, different wo rlds). Mercha nts used to find p lac es

whe re p eop le w ere selling things chea p ly, and then resell them for more

in a d ifferent location. This is still po ssible to a c erta in extent , but no t fo r the

huge profits ava ilab le in the past. With the G rand Exchange consolida ting

a ll worlds, and the trade limit forc ing a ll non-GE trades to have low profit

margins, the only rem aining possibility is to trad e o ver time instead ofspa ce. The only wa y a me rchant can ma ke b ig money is by b uying items,

holding onto the m, and selling them on a ga in in the future. The time an

item is held onto could b e sec ond s, hours, weeks, or yea rs.

GE Sec tion 1: Runescape Economics

Firstly, let s sta rt off w ith a basic lesson in Economics. We c an then use the

lessons we ve learnt in this sec tion on the Grand Exchange. This part o f theguide is tec hnica l, but has been simplified considerab ly. We advise you to

rea d it over as an understand ing of how things wo rk will make you a

better money ma ker. If you are gett ing stuc k, how eve r, then you can just

buy a t a certa in price. E.g. If the current p rice of Big Bones is 400gp , then it

ma y be that all the p layers on Runescape at any po int in time wa nt to

at a price of 400gp .

Supply: This is the amount o f a Runescape item tha t sellers a re willing to

sell a t a certain p rice. For exam p le, for the pric e o f 10gp for a Rune Pla te,

The way this price is set is beyond your co ntrol. But the interesting

KEY CONCLUSION:

An inc rease in dema nd lead s to an increase in p rice. Therefore,

if you expec t an increase in dem and in a c ertain item then itma y be a dvisab le to invest in that item. When you use this

technique, be sure to m ake the investment quick ly, as there

are lots of others who are look ing to d o the sam e thing.

For example, if a new skill requires mithril swords, then buy a lot o f mithril

swords. As the dem and is higher tha n the supp ly, the p rice will go up . You

can then sell the swo rds you b oug ht for a profit.

Tip : The expert sec tion of this guide g ives you a dvice on when to buy andwhen to sell item s. It a lso inc ludes the advice tha t when there is a surge in

dema nd, you ma y find tha t you need to b uy for the ma ximum price on

the Grand Exc hange.

Tip : You ha ve to use your ow n judgment to use this tec hnique. If the item

tha t is in high dem and is ea sily ob ta ined (e.g. ava ilab le in loc a l shop s tha t

have an infinite stock) then there is no point t rying to invest in it! The price

of the item will not increase m uch, as those tha t want it will just go a nd

find it themselves instea d of b uying it on the Grand Exc hange . In other

item they wa nt, ge t bored of t ra ining the new skill so m uc h, or finish

demand, so tha t you ca n sell be fore the dem and ge ts me t and

KEY CONCLUSION:A dec rease in demand lowers price. If you expec t a dec rease

in demand in a c ertain item, then it may be advisab le to sell

that item. When you use this tec hnique, be sure to sell the item

quickly a s when d emand falls the price falls, so holding onto

the item too long m ay lose you money. Prices fluc tuate (vary)

considerab ly from da y to day , so only worry about selling if you

expec t a longer term d ec rease in demand (and therefore a

longer term dec rease in price).

GE Sec tion 3: Interpreting the Grand Exc hange Graphs

The found ations of m aking money on the Grand Exc hange c om e from

using the online d atabase and sta tistics tha t Jagex have kind ly p resented

us with. These inc lude lists of the days most traded items, la rgest p rice

drop s and largest p rice rises .

To access this da tabase just g o to the official Runescape w eb site and

selec t G rand Exchange from the Ga me G uide drop d own m enu.

Economists note: In gene ra l, the shorter the t ime a p rice is averages over,

the mo re volatile the price change s will appea r. This is why the 20 day

ave rag e line a lwa ys looks muc h smoother than the d aily average and 5-

day average lines.

Note: The rea son why the da ily average line som et imes has fla t sec tions to

it is bec ause o f the p rice limit as the p rice increa ses/ dec rea ses.

A b asic idea of interpreting the g rand exchange graphs is need ed in

order to fully unloc k the pote ntia l of m aking mo ney from the G E, and use

the tec hniques com ing up in this guide. To sta rt w ith, you w ill need to

understand wha t the lines on the grand exchange graphs mean:

Daily Average Line (Blue): This line show s the change in price of anitem ea ch da y. It can be thought o f as a c ollec tion of p oints (the

prices ea c h d ay) joined up by a line. This line is the ea siest to

interpret a s the information it g ives is just wha t the current market

price w as at a po int in time .

5-Day Average Line (Orange): This is a moving average . The p ricesof a certain item over the last 5 days are ad ded up a nd a verag ed .

For example:

Monday: 100gp

Tues: 120gp

Wed s: 110gp

Thurs: 110gp

Fri: 105gp

The 5-day average in this case (assuming the day is current ly Frida y) is

109gp (100+120+110+110+105 / 5). The da ily a verage would be 105gp , as

tha t is the p rice tod ay (Friday).

20-Day Averag e Line (Pink): This is simila r to the 5-day average, butthe prices from the last 20 da ys are used instead of just from the last

5 da ys. This line is usefu l for looking a t long term trends in the market.

These lines are g iven to us by Jagex spec ifica lly to a llow us to spot pricing

trend s, so ma ke sure you c onsider them when trad ing on the G rand

Exchange.

GE Sec tion 4: Pric ing

If you re b uying an item you ll ob viously wa nt to ge t it for the lowest

possible p rice , and if you a re selling a n item you ll want the highe st

possible p rice. Doing this will ea rn you the most m oney!

For several rea sons, the m a in one being impatienc e, p layers will often sell

item s a t lower prices than they could ge t and buy them at higher ones.

These p eople c an be exp loited to squeeze som e extra gp out o f your

trades!

So ho w do you w ork out the prices you want to buy or sell item s a t?

Simp le; test p rices out! This is best shown using an exam p le:

Note: This is just a n example to show the technique. There is no need to

use the exac t num bers sta ted in this guide . This me thod can b e used noma tter wha t item you are selling !

To understa nd the proc ess, imagine you a re selling 2k Sharks. Go to the

Grand Exchang e Database on the offic ial Runesc ap e website a nd sea rch

for Shark. A graph w ill be show n a long with som e sta tistics simila r to the

ones be low:

Minimum price: 828 Market price: 871 Maximum p rice: 914

Note: The m inimum and ma ximum prices a t +-5% of the ma rket p rice.

Now log in to your Runescap e a ccount and g o to the G rand Exc hang e in

Varrock. Set up some selling slots with 50 sha rks in ea ch w ith p rices va rying

from a little over 870gp up tow ards the m aximum of 914gp .

For example, you m ay c hoose to sell:

your next Grand Exc hange strategy, or simp ly log o ff Runescape

your trades (or if you are in a rush to sell the item quicker then log in

In this example, imagine if only all the sha rks a t 880gp and 890gp sold .

Now you ve g ot a muc h c lea rer ide a of the p rice tha t you should sell the

rest o f your items for. By spac ing the rem aining sharks from 890gp to 899gp

you c an squeeze e very last gp out of your sa le.

For example, you m ay c hoose to sell your rem a ining 1.8k sha rks a t theseprices:





Log back in afte r a reasona ble a mo unt of time to g ive the sharks a

chanc e to sell. If the higher p ric ed sharks are ha ving troub le selling, then

de c rease the price to the sam e a s the highest amount that a ny of the

sha rks sold fo r!

Tip : If you are a non-memb er then the a bo ve technique c an still be used .

Just test p rices with your two slots instead . Onc e the test is com plete,

rem ove the items and test som e o ther prices (or sell your items if you think

you ve estab lished the best p rice). If b oth p rices sell then increase both

the slots to test aga in. If the lower price sells but the higher one d oe s not

then test som e p rices that a re b etween the two!

It m ay seem simp le, but this technique will maximize your profits in the long

run. You ve w orked hard to ge t the item s you a re selling, so ma ke sure you

ge t the right p rice for them!

Test prices the tec hnica l wa y:

If you have a spare c alculator, then this tec hnique can be used mo re

ac c ura tely. E.g. if you w ant to test the prices be tween a ma rket price o f

5000gp and a ma ximum price of 5252gp using a ll 6 slots then you c an

ea sily wo rk out som e e fficient prices to use.

Firstly, find the d ifference b etw een the m arket price and the highest

possible pric e (in this case it is 5252 5000 = 252gp ). Next, d ivide thisnumber by 4 to g ive the inte rva l va lues (in this case it g ives 63gp). Now

sta rting a t 5000gp , ad d the 63gp rep ea ted ly to find your test p rices. In this

case they d be approxima tely 5000gp , 5063gp , 5126gp , 5189gp , 5252gp .

By spac ing the va lues you test out eq ua lly, it is the most effic ient way of

find ing the best price.

Now, ima gine the item sold a t p rices up to 5126gp but d id not sell a t

5189gp +. If you rea lly wanted to squeeze every last p enny out b y find ing

an e ven mo re a ccurate price then you c ould repea t this tec hnical

ana lysis by using 5126 and 5189 as the high a nd low va lues. It is usua lly,

how eve r, suffic ient to use this tec hnica l test onc e a s the time taken to

rep ea t it to find the e xac t highe st p rice is usua lly not worth it. Prices a rechang ing a ll the time as we ll, so you d on t wa nt to ta ke too m uch time

de c iding on a price. A roughly ac cura te p rice is a ll you need to look for.

Note: Som etimes even the ma rket p rice is not high eno ugh to sell an item

at. In this case you m ay even need to test p ric es below the m arket price.

Buying Items a t the low est p rice :

Use this technique to buy items a t the lowest possible p rice to furthe r

maximize your profits. Saving m oney is as important a s making money.Every gp you save w hilst buying som ething goes exac tly where the rest of

your hard ea rned cash goes- it s ad ded to your bank ba lanc e!

The tec hnique is exac tly the same , excep t you a re t rying to find the low est

price tha t peop le w ill sell to you. So set up test p rices tha t a re inc rea singly

low er and wo rk out w hat the low est p rice you ll get success with is.

Expert:Turn your millions into b illions!

In th is sec tion w e will first c ontinue w ith our Grand Exchange guide . Thishas been inc luded in the expert sec tion as a fter prac tice this me thod

should b e e asy to perform, but it is a lso p ossible tha t you c ould lose

mo ney. There a re a few imp ortant tips tha t you should c onsider be fore

using the fo llow ing Grand Exc hange m ethods:

If you lose m oney, then d o no t c ontinue using the same item andmethod straight a wa y. Write d own how muc h you lost and work out

why it hap pened . It ma y be, for examp le, that you failed to

interpret the guide p rop erly or tha t you beg an selling the item too

late.

Dont become attac hed to an item or money. If you lose m oneyyou ma y blindly continue the exac t sam e m ethod in vain to ma ke it

back and end up losing mo re. Lost money is a sunk cost . This

me ans tha t it should no t be c onsidered while m aking d ec isions a fter

it ha s been lost. The mo ney is gone , and should be forgot ten in

terms of m aking dec isions.

After buying a n item you c annot resell it ag a in for 4 hours. You c anput the offer up, but nothing will hap pen for at lea st 4 hours. By

know ing this, if you think tha t a n item is not selling w ell and you are

considering selling it for chea per, it may just b e the case that you

rec ently boug ht the item. This tip may save you from losing p rofit

because of a lack of gam e knowledge.

Set your self a return goa l. For example, you m ay a im to ma ke aminimum of 4% on your investment p er trad e. This may sound like a

little, but over a week with one trade a day this would inc rea se your

bank ba lanc e b y 28%! This helps you to d istinguish between items

that you a re c onsidering trying to ma ke money with.

You may be ha ving trouble buying a t a price under the marketva lue. If the graphs suggest the p rice is set to increa se (read further

on into the g uide ) then don t be worried ab out pa ying the m arket

price or even a bit more.

Diversifica tion in your trad ing p ortfo lio is imp ortant. This basica llyme ans tha t you shouldn t put a ll your mo ney on a single item o r

trad e. Sprea d the risk over a t least 4 or 5 items as a minimum if you

are investing a majority of your savings, so tha t if som ething goes

wrong you won t lose a too d am ag ing amount.

Don t let these t ips put you off- we c onsistently ma ke hug e p rofits. These

tips are just to make sure you minimize your losses, and don t fa ll into the

traps tha t som e p layers do w hile trying to m ake money from the Grand

Exchange!

In ad d ition to the p reviously sta ted me thod of increasing the va lue of

items there a re two othe r trad ing me thod s. These me thod s relate c losely

to how stoc k market investors make dec isions. The Grand Excha nge c an

be thought of as being simila r to the Stock Market, although it is fa r frombeing the same. The G E is fa r, fa r simp ler and muc h ea sier to make money

from.

GE Sec tion 5: Trad ing by Exp loiting Impatienc e

This me thod is to exploit the imp atient na ture of the p layers of Runescape,

by exp loiting the d ifferenc es in the a c tual value o f an item and the

amount these impa tient p laye rs sell the item for. It is a fa irly LOW RISK

method , and g ood for ma king m oney without much effort.

The basic p rinc ip le is to b uy an item a t a p rice b elow w hat the market

va lues it a t, and sell it a t above wha t the ma rket va lue is. Due to

Runescape players being imp atient to ge t a n item, or money in exchang e

for their item s, they a re o ften w illing to b uy ab ove the m arket va lue a nd

sell below it. Ma ny p layers visit the G rand Excha nge to b uy or sell items

and wa nt the cash or money stra ight awa y. I.e. they a lter their p rices until

the item sells/ buys straight awa y.

This me thod should b e c a rried o ut on a spec ific type o f item . You a re

looking fo r an item that does not fluc tuate (vary) in p rice b y very muc h

over time. I.e. the market values it consistently at near-enough the samevalue. In terms of the g raphs on the G rand Exchange , you a re looking for

graphs that are fairly horizonta l, but do fluc tuate ab ove a
