We are having “TWO FER ONE “ field trip deal at this year’s AIH Conference in Portland, Oregon. There will be a field trip on Monday, October 14, 2002 to the scenic Co-lumbia River Gorge, east of Portland. The 8 AM to 4 PM field trip will focus on the geology and geomorphology of the Columbia River Gorge in the morning, and will focus on Lewis and Clark encampment site history in the after-noon. The morning itinerary will include stops in the Portland basin and the western portal of the gorge to look at fea-tures left by the huge ice-age Missoula Floods as they poured out of the gorge, followed by views and vistas of geology, waterfalls, and early 20th century engineering works from the Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway as we work our way east on the Oregon side of the river. The final stop of the morning will be at Cascade Locks, where we will discuss the tremendous Bridge of the Gods landslide, a feature that “bridges” geology, human use, early explora-tion, and modern development of the Columbia River. The afternoon will begin with an abbreviated tour of the second powerhouse of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Bonneville Dam on the Washington side of the river. Next will follow a historical program that features visits to many of the approximate locations of the Lewis and Clark en-campments in the Columbia Gorge and metropolitan Port-

land area. Sites include the many encampment locations from November 1 - 3, 1805 and March 30 to April 10, 1806. Included will be the approximate locations of the portage sites of the inundated Columbia Cascades near Bonneville Dam and Cascade Locks, Oregon, the Corps of Discovery stops at Beacon and Rooster Rocks, the extended hunting camp at Seal River (present-day Washougal River), their stay on Dia-mond Island (present-day Government Island), their Native American encounter at Image Canoe Island (present-day Hayden Island), and their closest encampment to Portland, across the Columbia at Frenchman’s Bar, Washington. Cost for the day-long tour, including lunch, is $30, made payable to AIH when registering as a full-time participant or registering as a full-time student, $35 if registering as a one-day participant.

IN MEMORIAM Donald R. Albin (215-HG) one of AIH’s early members, suffered a heart attack and passed away on February 2, 2002, during a goose-hunting trip with his grandson. Don spent 32 years of dedicated service with the U.S. Geological Survey. After retiring in 1990, he spent his time with his family enjoying golf, fishing, hunting and being an avid music-lover with a gift for singing. He sang with the Colorado Symphony Chorus and the Colorado Chorale, performing in many castles and ca-thedrals while on a tour through Europe. He is survived by his wife, Elsie, a brother and three daughters and their families.

Wisconsin has now accepted the AIH exam as the official State Exam for Professional Hydrologists! We need interested and committed volunteers to lobby the remaining 49 states to accept our un-equaled standards! Starting in the year 2002, the AIH certification ex-amination to be used will be a process that was de-veloped cooperatively with the Wisconsin Dept. of Regulation and Licensing (DRL). Check out the AIH web site for examination details (www.aihydro.org). If the applicant passes the examination, he/she is also a qualified candidate for registration as a professional hydrologist with the state of Wisconsin. A team of test psychometricians and hydrologists developed the examinations. The exams were based on subjects provided by hydrologists from the entire United States, from both AIH membership and outside the membership. Exam questions were developed from questions and ideas submitted by a smaller but representative sample of these same hydrologists willing to take the time to help. Applicants (and prospective license candidates) can currently choose either a principles and practice examination directed toward groundwater or a principles and practice examination directed toward surface water. Candidates taking either of these examinations must also take the fundamentals of hydrology examination, covering basic knowledge common to the general field of hydrology. Water-quality knowledge is implicit in all the examinations, and a separate water-quality principles and practice examination is currently being developed. The fundamentals of Hydrology examination, formerly known as the AIH Part I exam, tests the understanding of basic hydrologic principles – including mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, meteorology, engineering, soil science, and other related disciplines. This examination tests the breadth of understanding rather than depth in a particular specialty. The fundamentals examination is a closed book test of approximately 100 multiple-choice questions taken from a 300-question data bank. The fundamentals examination must be passed to be eligible to take the principles and practice examinations. The principles and practice examinations, formerly called Part II exams, test the applicant's ability to sort out meaningful data and apply hydrological, hydrogeological, and water-quality analyses to practical problems of engineering design, water

resource management, regional or on-site investiga-tions, municipal or land use planning, research for-mulation, etc. They are designed to demonstrate the depth expected of practicing hydrologists in formu-lating practical solutions. The principles and practice examinations are open book examinations of approximately 100 questions, also derived from question data banks of approximately 300 questions each. In the future, this same examination may also be used for registration in other states. This is where help is needed to promote the value of the test and the importance of the state registration of hydrolo-gists. Only a few states have even considered the need for legislation requiring the registration of professional Hydrologists. We are now armed with a viable tool for testing the competence of scientists and engineers that profess to be proficient in making water-resources-related decisions. We need to develop networks of interested people within states that are progressive enough to encompass these ideas. Our membership is encouraged to volunteer their time towards this goal. Anyone interested should contact Tony Laenen, who is the current Chair of the Examination Committee. ([email protected] (503) 253-7213 [email protected] (651) 484-8169)
