Assemble pages quickly, output them confidentlyIn fast-paced design and production environments, producing pages with speed and precision is mandatory

for meeting client deadlines and getting on press on time. Central to this process is your page layout soft-

ware, where you assemble text and creative assets and output final pages. With each release, InDesign has

introduced more tools to streamline production tasks and output pages precisely, while nurturing a flexible

creative process. With Adobe InDesign CS, we took this focus a step further by setting a goal of improving

productivity at every level—from introducing features designed specifically to speed up tasks to fine-tuning

older features to produce even higher levels of efficiency. The result is InDesign CS, a sleek, efficient new

version that helps you work faster and better than ever.

Story Editor

Designed to function like a word processor within InDesign CS, the Story Editor offers an efficient new

way to edit stories that run across several text frames or across multiple pages. When you open a story in

the Story Editor, you can add, edit, or delete text as quickly as you can type—a real timesaver when you’re

entering lengthy or complicated edits. The Story Editor provides an interactive view of the text in your

InDesign CS layout: any changes you enter in Story Editor appear in the layout as you type, so copyfitting

text is extremely efficient. In addition, viewing and applying paragraph and character styles, XML tags, and

text formatting is fast and easy, especially when applying styles to text that runs across several pages.

Importing unformatted textBy popular customer request, text copied from other applica-tions is now pasted into InDesign as unformatted text by default, unless you enable the Preserve Text Attributes When Pasting preference. In addition, you can choose to import text and tables from Microsoft Word as unformatted text by selecting Show Import Options in the Place dialog box and checking an option. By default, Microsoft Excel tables are imported as unformat-ted text, but you can choose to preserve their formatting. Note that text pasted from one InDesign page or document to another always preserves applied formatting.

The Story Editor is highly customizable, particularly if you prefer the look of a classic word-processing

system. Story Editor Display preferences include font, font size, font color, line spacing, and background

color. The text cursor can be set to a standard,

barbell, thick, or block shape, and blinking can be

turned on or off. An anti-aliasing option gives you

control over the onscreen appearance of text. A

choice of built-in themes enables the Story Editor

to mimic the look of ink on paper, amber mono-

chrome, classic system, or terminal with a single

setting. The Story Editor delivers highly productive

text-editing tools for individual designers. InDesign

CS also integrates tightly with InCopy CS to provide

a complete solution for collaborative editorial work-

flow. For more details, see “Integration with Adobe

InCopy CS” on page 15.

Separations Preview palette

InDesign CS was designed to print high-quality pages consistently and reliably. Since version 1.0 was

released in 1999, Adobe InDesign has offered built-in support for the latest PostScript 3™ printing tech-

nologies. Each subsequent release has incorporated real-world feedback from print professionals around

the globe. As a result, InDesign 2.0 was widely recognized for its highly productive printing controls. Now

InDesign CS takes printing to a new level, pioneering an innovative new tool called the Separations Preview

palette. Just as the name implies, the Separations Preview palette enables print professionals—as well as

designers and production artists—to preview and evaluate spot and process color separations onscreen.

More importantly, it helps print professionals identify and prevent costly mistakes before they appear in

film or on press.

The Separations Preview palette displays spot and process plates using either the default ink characteristics

or the custom ones specified with the Ink Manager (available on the Swatches and Separations Preview

palette menus or in the InDesign CS Print dialog box). Overprinting information, ink aliasing, and other

output settings are also included in separations preview. In addition, you can enter ink limits to check how

the output will perform under different press conditions or on different substrates. Problem areas are then

highlighted onscreen. A Desaturate Black option—available when color management is disabled—can help

you visualize more accurately how black will appear when printed as compared to rich black.

Other printing enhancementsAdobe InDesign CS introduces these additional printing enhancements:• Set up more flexible color-man-

aged workflows: include a mix of RGB and CMYK artwork when printing composite output or exporting EPS files.

• Print absolute page ranges. For example, print from the first page of a section to a specific page, or from a specific page to the last page of the section.

• Correctly print Photoshop DCS 1.0 and 2.0 files (raster data only) when interacting with transparency or outputting to in-RIP separations. Also retain high-resolution image data in these DCS files when exporting to Adobe PDF.

More useful than laser-printed separation proofs, the Separations Preview palette helps print professionals

more easily and quickly detect the effects of overprinting, knockouts, ink limit issues, black ink printing,

and more. The InDesign CS document remains live and editable when the separations preview is active,

so you can interactively fix any issues with direct visual feedback. Using the groundbreaking Separations

Preview palette, you can ensure that you get the best possible printed results with the least amount of hassle

and expense.

Flattener Preview palette

In January 2002, Adobe InDesign 2.0 became the first professional design and layout program to offer

comprehensive support for transparency. This introduction opened up the creative workflow: designers

could apply drop shadows, feathering, and opacity settings to text and graphics in InDesign, and both the

settings and the objects would remain editable. In addition, they could import and output Photoshop files

with transparent backgrounds and soft edges, as well as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe PDF files with trans-

parency. To ensure high-quality printing, InDesign 2.0 also included Transparency Flattener Presets for

controlling how transparent areas of documents were flattened at print or export time. Now InDesign CS

introduces a Flattener Preview palette for evaluating and adjusting the effects of flattening onscreen before

you output a file, so you can exercise even finer control over the final output quality. The controls in this

palette are similar to controls in Adobe Illustrator CS and Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional.

You use the Flattener Preview palette to perform three tasks: (1) Apply different Transparency Flattener

Presets to find out which one will produce the desired output. (2) Preview the effect of transparency flat-

tener settings on different areas of a document to assess different types of interactions that you want to con-

trol. For example, determine whether a flattener setting will rasterize text. (3) Apply the final Transparency

Flattener Preset you select to your print settings. Transparency Flattener Presets only flatten areas affected

by transparency and leave other areas alone (this flattening happens during print or export, and does not

affect the contents of the file itself). The palette enables you to preview different combinations of affected

objects, such a outlined text, outlined strokes, all transparent objects, complex regions that will be raster-

ized, and more. When you activate a preview, the specified objects are highlighted in red onscreen, while all

other objects are grayed out.

You can then adjust the Transparency Flattener Preset in use, balancing printed quality against output

speed. For example, you might identify text that interacts with transparent Photoshop images, and decide

to increase the resolution of the Transparency Flattener Preset to ensure that the text retains its crisp

appearance. Or you may be able to lower the resolution applied to speed up printing without sacrificing

quality. Using the Flattener Preview palette, print professional and designers can prevent mistakes, reduce

costs, and ensure the highest quality printed results.

Performance enhancements

At Adobe, we know that application performance matters. That’s why increasing the speed with which you

can perform common tasks is always a priority. Here are just a few of the ways that InDesign CS improves

performance and speeds up your work:

• Experience dramatically faster navigation thanks to performance improvements that speed up scrolling and

screen redraw 50%–80%: now you can scroll through, zoom in and out of, and use the grabber hand to

move around InDesign CS documents much more rapidly.

• Import native Photoshop and Photoshop EPS files up to 70% faster.

• Import Microsoft Word and Excel files from 40%–70% faster than before. By optimizing how InDesign

handles formatting in imported Word and Excel documents, the import speed for these files improved

significantly.

• Print and export Adobe PDF files up to 40% faster (on average) when working with documents that con-

tain drop shadows and other transparent effects, Photoshop EPS files, and placed PDF files.

• Check spelling in documents up to 70% faster on a Mac OS and more than 40% faster on Windows.

Bleeds and slugs

The Document Setup dialog box in InDesign CS enables you to set up and display bleed and slug areas in

your documents. Bleed areas are used to position graphics so that they expand past the crop marks that set

the final trimmed size of the printed page. Then, when the page is trimmed, the graphics extend to the edge

of the page. Slug areas are most commonly used by advertising companies to place information, such as

client name, project name, print date, approval signatures, printing instructions, and other details, onto a

page edge. This page edge is trimmed from the final printed output but stored with an archived version of

the page. Slug areas are useful for any design team that wants a printed trail of project details, or that wants

to include information for reviews but not in the final printed output.

To set up bleed and slug areas, click More Options in the Document Setup dialog box. You can then set

the bleed and slug areas to be the same or different sizes for each page edge. If the lock button is selected

for bleeds or slugs, entering an amount for one edge automatically sets the other edges to be the same. As

you would expect, bleed and slug areas can optionally be included in print or PDF output. In addition, the

About flattening transparency for output

PostScript RIPs cannot output transparent objects natively, though some devices can process native transparency in Adobe PDF 1.4 and later files. Instead, transparent objects must be flattened for output on these devices. Adobe InDesign includes a flattener engine to perform this task, as well as customizable Transparency Flattener Presets, which control how the flattening is applied.

The flattener engine analyzes pages and spreads that contain transparent objects. It then cuts apart overlapping transparent regions, rasterizes some typog-raphy or artwork that intersects transparent objects, and sets the output resolution based on the selected preset. Pages or spreads that don’t contain transparent objects are not touched. The new Flattener Preview palette gives you more insight into how Transparency Flattener Presets will affect your final output, so you can fine-tune the results before you print.

A document containing native transparency can be processed, without flattening, if it is sent as an Adobe PDF 1.4 or later file to some RIPs using PostScript version 3015 or later (manufac-turer support may vary). As more RIPs are upgraded, flattening becomes unnecessary. Adobe’s goal is to make working with native transparency as routine as it is to work with line screens today (a challenge in the early days of desktop publishing).

Three ways to apply Transpar-ency Flattener PresetsYou have several options for applying Transparency Flattener Presets. As discussed in “Flat-tener Preview palette,” you can click the Apply Settings To Print button in the palette to globally apply a preset to your printed output. Alternatively, though, you can select the preset in the Print dialog box. For PDF output, you specify the Transparency Flattener Preset in the PDF Export dialog box. To override the global setting and apply a specific preset to a spread, click the icons for the spread in the Pages palette, and choose Spread Flattening > Custom from the Pages palette menu. (1) Specify which types of interactions InDesign should

highlight onscreen. (2) Choose a Transparent Flattener preset. (3) View those areas onscreen, highlighted in red (areas that won’t be flattened appear in pale gray).

Preview mode—first introduced in Adobe InDesign 2.0 to enable you to view pages onscreen trimmed and

without non-printing items, just as they would appear in print—now allows you to preview bleed areas or

slug areas onscreen.

Document Presets

Tired of specifying the same new document settings over and over again? Then save your commonly used

settings as named Document Presets—similar to Print and PDF Export Presets in InDesign CS—which you

can select to open a new file. For example, let’s say you regularly create magazine pages that have the same

page size and orientation, margin size, number of columns, and bleed and slug settings. With InDesign CS,

you can specify those settings once, save them as a Document Preset, and then instantly open new files with

these settings. Document Presets save you time and help ensure consistency.

Nested styles

If you’ve ever spent time applying formatting-specific overrides to paragraph styles, you know how time-

consuming it is. Even with character styles to help speed the process, it takes time to apply paragraph styles

and then highlight and individually style drop caps, inline heads, specific text in table entries, and more.

That’s why InDesign CS introduces nested styles, a text-styling innovation that takes the pain out compli-

cated text formatting. With InDesign CS, you can nest one or more character style into a paragraph style

to apply both styles at one time. Here are some examples of text styling that can be performed in one step

thanks to nested styles:

Easily define custom page sizesMake custom page sizes avail-able to any new document by editing the New Doc Sizes.txt file in the Presets folder in the Adobe InDesign application folder. You simply open the file and add values for name, width, and height to the bottom of the text file. Your new entry will then appear on the Page Size menu in the Document Setup dialog box. For example, you could enter Booklet 6” 6” to add a custom 6-inch-by-6-inch page size called Booklet to the menu (the measurement specified gets translated into the active unit of measurement). You can add as many custom page sizes as you need for your work.

Easily create, edit, delete, and load document presets. Also save docu-ment presets to external files that you can share with colleagues.

Specify any combination of document settings to save as a named document preset for on-going use.

Example 1: Format drop caps to use fonts, colors, and other attributes that are different than the rest of the paragraph: just assign a character style to the drop cap in the paragraph style.

Example 2: Nest multiple character styles in a paragraph style to quickly apply complex formatting. The paragraph style used above includes three nested styles, each assigned to style text up to a forced line break in the paragraph.

Example 3: Include custom stroke styles in nested styles to help high-light characters, such as the ones in the example above. See page 10 for details about stroke styles.

To set up nested styles, do the following: First, define the character styles you want to use. Then choose

New Paragraph Style from the Paragraph Styles palette menu, and click the Drop Caps & Nested Styles

options. Next, click New Nested Style to display the options you need. Then select a character style, and set

options for how that character style is applied in a paragraph. You can choose to apply the nested style up

to or through sentences, words, characters, digits, letters, or a wide variety of special characters, such as an

em space, a tab mark, or a forced linebreak. You can also specify the number of sentences, words, charac-

ters, digits, or letters to which the character style is applied. Finally, you can embed more than one charac-

ter style in a paragraph style to control the appearance of different elements of a paragraph.

Info palette

The new Info palette in InDesign CS—similar to ones in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator—provides valu-

able feedback about text and images. When the type tool is inserted in a text frame, the Info palette reports

the number of characters, words, lines, and paragraphs in that frame and any frames linked to it, as well

the amount of overset text. This information can help you copyfit text to the design, and ensure that all of

the text is set before you print review or proof copies. In addition, the Info palette displays the original and

effective resolution of images you import and resize in pixels per inch (ppi), as well as the color space and

file type of those graphics. It also reports stroke/fill, color space, and swatch name information for selected

InDesign CS objects.

Measure tool

The new measure tool in InDesign CS works just like the one in Adobe Illustrator. With it, you can quickly

calculate the distance between any two points on a page or spread. The distance measured appears in the

Info palette using the active unit of measurement for the document. The Info palette shows the horizontal

and vertical distance from the x and y axes, the actual horizontal and vertical distance, the total distance,

and the angle measured.

Built-in DTD support for XML validation

InDesign CS expands its XML integration with built-in support for DTDs (Document Type Definitions).

A DTD is a document ruleset that defines a required set of XML tags and their order for a document.

For example, an XML-based magazine article might require these tagged elements to be valid: headline,

byline, introduction, body text, image, caption, and pull quote. You use DTDs to help create and validate

structured templates into which you can dynamically flow valid XML content. Correctly structured XML

content flows right into the tagged frames in a valid structured template with minimal human interven-

tion, so you save significant production time. If the tags are mapped to paragraph and character styles, you

can produce styled layouts rapidly and accurately. You can even combine these capabilities with the robust

scripting support in InDesign CS to automate repetitive production tasks.

A DTD can also help you tag new or legacy content for repurposing by identifying tagging errors and auto-

matically suggesting fixes to create valid XML content. You simply import a DTD into the Structure view

to associate the DTD with the template or document. Tags in the DTD appear in the Tags palette for you to

use in tagging templates or content. When you validate a structured template or tagged content, InDesign

displays the results at the bottom of the Structure view. If no issues are found, a simple message stating

that appears. If InDesign identifies problems, it lists them and automatically helps you fix them. You can

validate all of the structure in a template or tagged document, or you can validate from a point you specify

in the tag hierarchy. When exporting XML files, the DTD—or a reference to it—can be included in the

file. With InDesign CS, you can also embed comments and processing instructions in exported XML docu-

ments to support XML workflows. DTD support is key to integrating InDesign CS into largescale XML-

based workflows in fast-paced publishing environments. Note You can easily view the contents of a DTD in

InDesign to troubleshoot a problem or copy its content to another DTD file in a text editor.

Map XML tags to character styles

InDesign CS makes it easier and faster

than ever to style tagged content and

to tag styled content for repurposing in

other documents, on the Web, and for

other cross-media publishing purposes.

Thanks to the ability to map XML tags

to character styles, you can style inline

heads, Web addresses, and other short

runs of text in XML content with com-

plete ease. You can even map XML tags

to character styles nested in paragraph

styles to take advantage of the new nested

styles feature described on page 5. In addition, you can map

character styles to XML tags to add more structure to the XML

content you create. This new capability supplements the ability to

map XML tags to paragraph styles, and vice versa, which was first

introduced in Adobe InDesign 2.0.

Be true to your creative visionAdobe InDesign CS software works at multiple levels to support your creative vision. At one level, it’s about

giving you the right tools—to set beautiful type, create colors, apply editable drop shadows, produce tables,

and more. At another, it’s about how those tools work. Our goal is to put intuitive tools at your fingertips

that help you express what you want without getting in your way. InDesign CS builds on these traditions

by introducing more flexible workspace management and more than a dozen usability enhancements that

make its tools easier to use, as well as by adding traditional creativity features such as Pathfinder com-

mands, a stroke style editor, mixed ink support, and user-specified glyph sets.

Flexible workspace management

InDesign CS provides a completely customizable, clutter-free work environment. Here are a few of the new

ways you can adapt InDesign CS to work the way you want:

(1) Use a context-sensitive Control palette to format text,

adjust graphics, and alter tables. (2) Tuck palettes out of the way

by docking them along the right or left edge of your monitor.

(3) Click a palette tab to quickly make its options visible; then

click it again to hide the palette. (4) Specify a different vertical offset minimum to make the

pasteboard larger above and below the page. Also choose

a display color for Preview mode to give a more polished

appearance for a presentation, or to view the document in the

context of a color.

Control palette Discover efficient new ways of working by using the Control palette. Now, as an alterna-

tive to switching among the Character, Paragraph, Transform, Stroke, and Table palettes to style text, edit

objects, and fine-tune tables, you can use the Control palette, which centralizes these options—plus a few

others for creating columns and fitting content to frames—in one handy location. The Control palette is

context-sensitive, so the options available depend on the object selected on the InDesign CS page: when the

type tool is inserted in a text frame, text-formatting options appear; when an image or InDesign CS object

is selected, transform, stroke, and other options are available; and when one or more table cells, rows, or

columns are selected, table-specific options appear. The Control palette can float over the page, or dock to

the top or bottom of the window, depending on your preference.

Named workspaces You can arrange combinations of palettes in your window to suit different design tasks,

and then save them as named workspaces—just as you can in Adobe Photoshop. You can then activate a

named workspace at any time. For example, you could save text-formatting palettes in a workspace called

Typography, and select it whenever you want to focus on styling type for your design. A workspace not only

saves the particular palettes you want, but the location in which you saved them—so the workspace opens

the way you want it every time you select it. You can always delete a customized workspace when it’s no

longer useful.

Collapsible palettes Palettes offer an incredibly useful, interactive way to apply options as you design. How-

ever, palettes can also clutter your workspace. That’s why InDesign CS adapted an innovation from its sister

product, Adobe InCopy: collapsible palettes that dock along the edge of the window. Now, when you drag

a palette to the right or left edge of your monitor, it turns into a side tab and collapses to the edge. Clicking

a collapsed palette tab opens it, so you can select options. Clicking it again tucks it out of sight along the

monitor edge. You can collapse palettes in groups that suit your work.

Other workspace enhancements With InDesign CS, you can customize the vertical size of the pasteboard

by setting a minimum vertical offset in the Guides & Pasteboard Preferences panel. For example, you can

gain considerably more space for storing or working on objects by switching the default vertical size from 6

picas to 60 picas. You can also specify a background color for when Preview mode is activated—for exam-

ple, you could choose a Preview color that enhances an onscreen concept presentation for a client.

Pathfinder commands

Use the new Pathfinder palette or the Pathfinder commands on the Object menu to build new compound

objects from the intersection of two or more objects, just as you can in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

For example, click Exclude Overlap in the Pathfinder palette to create a compound shape that’s transpar-

ent where the original shapes overlap each other. InDesign CS includes these Pathfinder commands to help

you quickly produce the shapes you need for your designs: Add, Subtract, Intersect, Exclude Overlap, and

Minus Back.

Create new compound shapes by combining two or more

shapes with the new Pathfinder commands. Here the top shape

is knocking out the bottom shape. The new shape assumes

the color of the first shape.

Let the Control palette float over your workspace or dock it to the top or bottom of your screen. Use the Control palette to edit text, adjust graphics, or modify tables.

Usability enhancements for text and graphics

In response to customer suggestions, InDesign CS is packed with usability enhancements that make the

product more efficient and creatively responsive to use:

• Double-click a text frame to switch instantly to the type tool and place an insertion point at the location

where you double-clicked; then enter changes to your text—just as you do in Adobe Illustrator. No more

going to the toolbox just to switch to the type tool!

• Option–double-click (Mac OS) or Alt–double-click (Windows) a text frame to quickly open the Text

Frame Options dialog box.

• Move or resize a text frame without losing your text selection. Just press Command (Mac OS) or Ctrl (Win-

dows). Then click and drag a text frame handle to resize the frame, or click and drag the text frame edge to

move the text frame. When you complete the action, the last text selection or highlight will still be active, so

you can get right back to your main task.

• Preview in real time how resizing a text frame—or moving a text frame that’s interacting with a text wrap—

affects text composition. Just click down on a text frame handle or text frame edge, pause for a moment

to activate dynamic text preview, and then view the results as you make your adjustments. This usability

enhancement extends the dynamic graphics preview capability introduced in InDesign 2.0, which enables

you to preview an entire image as you adjust what’s visible in a frame.

• Scale text interactively, rather than using the Character palette or other options. If you’re like many design-

ers, you prefer working visually to determine the exact size a headline or decorative text element needs to

be. With InDesign CS, you simply press the Command (Mac OS) or Ctrl (Windows) key and drag a text

frame edge to scale—or even distort—text.

• Choose Balance Ragged Lines from the Paragraph palette menu to quickly balance ragged left-aligned text

across multiple lines—a useful option for balancing lines in a headline.

The Character palette reports that you’ve resized the text to 37.553 points—a size that pleases you visually but that you wouldn’t have identified easily without this interactive feedback.

• Select Only Align First Line to Grid from the Paragraph palette menu to quickly align the first line of text to

the underlying grid, while allowing subsequent lines to obey the applied leading value. Also set an option to

ensure that text wrapping around an object skips to the next available leading increment below the object to

maintain consistent line spacing.

• Don’t be bothered by font name conflicts because InDesign CS now lists all active fonts that share a font

name but have different PostScript® names. You can differentiate them because the font names are listed in

all Font menus with the font technologies abbreviated in parentheses—for example, ITC American Type-

writer (TT) for the TrueType version and ITC American Typewriter (T1) for the PostScript Type 1 version.

• Use this Illustrator shortcut to quickly open and edit a linked graphic in its original program: Option–

double-click (Mac OS) or Alt–double-click (Windows). Then edit the graphic and update your InDesign

CS document efficiently.

• Select objects above and below other objects more easily using the new Select menu options, available on

the Object menu, in the Control palette, and on context-sensitive menus.

Running headers and footers in tables

InDesign CS offers incredibly versatile table support—from its ability to import Microsoft Excel and Word

tables to its automated support for applying line strokes and fills to alternating rows and columns. It also

enables you to lay out tables in multiple linked frames, so changes made to one part of a table can automat-

ically ripple through the entire table without any manual changes. Now InDesign CS enhances this support

with running headers and footers. You can set one or more rows to be header or footer rows. Then, when

you flow the table through multiple text frames, InDesign CS automatically adds the header or footer to the

new frame. If you subsequently add or delete frames, InDesign CS adjusts without further input from you.

In addition, InDesign CS honors on import any heading rows that have been designated in Microsoft Word

and RTF files.

Enhanced text wrap

InDesign CS offers more control over text wrap settings: now you can suppress text wrap on hidden layers.

In other words, if you apply text wrap to an object and then hide the layer on which that object is stored, the

text wrap settings are no longer active. This is particularly useful when you’re creating multiple versions of a

document on different layers in a file—for example, to show a client several variations of a design idea, or to

set up different language versions of a file. In addition, you can control whether text wrap affects all of the text

frames in a stacking order, or just the text frames directly beneath the text-wrapped object.

Stroke style editor

Expand the variety and creativity of the line strokes available for your design work with the new stroke style

editor in InDesign CS. Now it’s fast and easy to produce a wide range of dashed, dotted, and striped lines,

Additional table editing enhancements With InDesign CS, you can instantly do the following with tables: unmerge cells that have previously been merged; convert tables to text and text to tables by selecting tab, comma, or paragraph separators and apply-ing a command from the Table menu; preview color swatches in the Table Options dialog box; and align decimal characters, or other specified characters, in table cells. You can also apply custom strokes to table cells, and even control whether the row or column stroke appears on top. Finally, a new viewing option enables you to view cell frame edges that would otherwise not be visible because there is no stroke weight or color swatch applied, or because the Paper swatch is applied.

Avoid font conflicts: Easily view all fonts and identify different font technologies thanks to InDesign CS software’s ability to report this information on the Font menu.

Select objects more easily—particularly in highly layered designs—with the new Select commands.

Easily set up running headers and footers for tables. InDesign CS then automatically adds the header and/or footer to tables that run across multiple frames or tables—a real timesaver, especially when those tables are changing right up until your print date.

and then apply them to underlines, strikethroughs, paragraph and character rules, table cells, frames, and

other objects. You can even control the placement of a stroke, deciding whether to center it on the line

(where Illustrator positions it) or to position it on the outside or inside of the line. And you can apply a

solid color or tint to the gaps in a stroke.

Align a stroke to the center, outside or inside of a line with the click of one of these buttons.

Here are multiple examples of custom line styles, including two that are being used to add emphasis in a nested style (for details, see page 5).

Select a spot ink and another ink (spot or process). Then specify the initial tint of each, the number of repeats, and the percentage increase of each repeat. Click OK to generate a palette of colors for use in your multi-ink job.

To create custom stroke styles, you choose Stroke Styles

from the Stroke palette menu, and click New. Then enter

a name for your custom style, choose Dashed, Dotted, or

Striped from the Type menu, and specify how the new line

style looks. When you’re ready, click Add to make this line

style available for on-going use in InDesign CS. You can

create, edit, and delete line styles at any time. You can also

export stroke styles for use by your colleagues.

Mixed ink support

Cost-effectively broaden the range of colors available in print jobs involving two or more inks: for example,

combine two inks—such as a spot color and a varnish, or a spot color and a process color—to create a

palette of colors for the design without increasing your budget. To do this, first create a spot color in the

Swatches palette. Then choose New Mixed Ink Swatch from the Swatches palette menu and enter the set-

tings you want. Alternatively, you can create a mixed ink group to quickly make a large range of colors

available for use. Select New Mixed Ink Group from the Swatches palette menu, and enter values for

InDesign CS to use to automatically generate the palette of colors. In a mixed ink group, the base swatches

are parents to all of the related swatches. If you edit a base swatch, InDesign CS automatically updates the

related swatches and any objects that have the swatches applied.

Mixing color spaces in composite printingAdobe InDesign CS enables a broader and more flexible range of color-managed workflows: you can now output a mix of CMYK and RGB images when you print composite output. Simply select Composite Leave Unchanged from the Color menu in the Output panel of the Print dialog box. You can also mix RGB and CMYK colors in exported EPS files by selecting Leave Unchanged from the Color menu in the Export EPS dialog box.

Color swatch enhancements

You can now add multiple new color swatches to the Swatches

palette without having to close and open the New Color Swatch

dialog box each time. Instead, InDesign CS includes an Add

button in this (and related) dialog boxes, so you can specify colors

much more efficiently.

User-specified glyph sets

Organize the glyphs you use most often into sets that you can access easily in the popular Glyphs palette.

Just create a named glyph set by selecting New Glyph Set from the Glyphs palette menu. Then add to, edit,

view, and delete glyphs from the set at will (glyph sets can even mix fonts). Once a glyph set has been cre-

ated, you can browse, locate, and insert the glyphs you want into your design with streamlined efficiency.

Let Adobe integration work for youAdobe InDesign CS software integrates more tightly with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive, InCopy,

and Acrobat 6.0 Professional than any other page layout program available today. The power of this inte-

gration is apparent whether you’re learning a new InDesign CS feature more quickly because you’re already

familiar with it, importing and exporting the latest Adobe PDF files, working with native Photoshop and

Illustrator files in your page layouts, or setting up better editorial or Web workflows through InCopy and

GoLive integration.

Adobe PDF file export

InDesign CS outputs Adobe PDF files directly in Adobe Acrobat 6.0 (PDF 1.5), Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4), or

Acrobat 4.0 (PDF 1.3) format. InDesign CS also continues to refine its support for high-end PDF-based

printing workflows by offering built-in support for ISO-standard PDF/X-1A and PDF/X-3 files. Designed

to improve output reliability, PDF/X-1A offers better support for CMYK printing, while PDF/X-3 provides

enhanced support for color-managed workflows.

InDesign CS takes advantage of the latest Adobe PDF technology. You can now export InDesign CS layers

as Adobe PDF 1.5 layers, and then hide, show, and work with these layers in Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Profes-

sional, the latest version of Acrobat for creative professionals. For example, if you often set up multiple

design concepts on different InDesign layers, you can now export those concepts to a layered Adobe PDF

file for review by colleagues and clients. InDesign CS also supports 128-bit encryption in Adobe PDF files.

Author rich interactive Adobe PDF files

InDesign CS takes direct export of Adobe PDF files to a new level, delivering the tools you need to author

and export interactive Acrobat 6.0 (PDF 1.5) files that include bookmarks, rollover buttons, and movie,

animation, and audio files. These new interactive PDF tools expand your design toolkit, whether you’re

producing interactive forms, putting together an advertising campaign with print, video, and audio options

Editing the master spot color automatically updates every color instance in the file.

Create custom glyph sets to organize the glyphs you use most often in easy-to-access groupings, which can combine glyphs from different fonts. The glyph set above groups financial symbols from several fonts.

This selection of colors was gener-ated with only two colors—a spot ink and a process Black ink—and then applied to a set of squares to create a swatch sheet.

Adding colors to gradientsInDesign CS makes it easier to add color stops to a gradient bar: you simply drag any number of color swatches from the Swatches palette and drop them on the bar in the Gradient palette. You can even use the Paper swatch as a gradient stop.

About Adobe PDFAdobe PDF files offer numer-ous benefits: They preserve the design and content of the original file, they can be viewed on almost any platform, they sup-port high-end printing, and they are compact, portable, and easy to navigate. In addition, you can export interactive PDF files from InDesign that include movies, audio files, and other interactive elements that enhance your audience’s experience. For these reasons, Adobe PDF is the file format of choice for electronic reviews with clients, for distribu-tion of content on the Web and in other venues, and for output to desktop and professional printing devices.

Creating hyperlinks and bookmarksYou can now create and modify hyperlinks and bookmarks using the context-sensitive menus avail-able for any selectable object. Just select the text or graphic object, right-click, and choose New Hyperlink or New Bookmark from the menu.

Enhanced support for Photoshop (PSD) files

InDesign CS imports native Adobe Photoshop CS files. What’s more, this native support has been

expanded: InDesign CS now places and outputs duotone, tritone, and quadtone Photoshop (PSD) files,

as well as PSD and TIFF files that contain spot channels. It also prints raster-only Photoshop DCS 1.0 and

DCS 2.0 files correctly when they interact with transparent elements and when using in-RIP separations,

and it retains the high-resolution image data when it exports these DCS files to Adobe PDF. This new sup-

port for PSD files reduces or even eliminates the need for labor-intensive DCS and separation-based work-

flows. You can now replace these workflows with a more efficient composite output workflow.

Enhanced support for Adobe XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform)

Adobe XMP facilitates digital asset management and collaboration by offering an open, extensible XML-

based framework for embedding, tracking, and exchanging metadata about assets. All of the components of

the new Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition—InDesign CS, Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS, GoLive CS,

and Acrobat 6.0 Professional—support the Adobe XMP framework. For example, InDesign CS automati-

cally preserves metadata information embedded in Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS, and Acrobat 6.0 files on

Create and nest bookmarks with the new Bookmarks palette. Then export them in your Adobe PDF files.

Create a button with the button tool. Format it to look the way you want. Then specify rollover states that set how the button should behave in the exported Acrobat 6.0 PDF file.

for a client to review, authoring a PDF book with interactive learning content, or any number of other

design uses. For example, imagine that you’re working on an integrated ad campaign with print, television,

radio, and Web components. You create multiple campaign concepts for client review and feedback. With

InDesign CS, you can lay out the different print ad concepts, incorporate links to the related video, audio,

and Macromedia Flash content, add bookmarks for easy navigation, and export the whole thing as a single

interactive PDF file for streamlined review with colleagues and the client.

In InDesign CS, you’ll find these robust controls for creating interactive Adobe PDF files:

• Bookmarks palette Quickly add bookmarks to a document by selecting text or a graphic and choosing New

Bookmark from the Bookmarks palette menu. Or choose New Bookmark with nothing selected to add a

bookmark for a page. Easily nest bookmarks to organize a navigational hierarchy. Note that tables of con-

tents can automatically generate bookmarks during PDF export. Also bookmarks can be included in Acro-

bat 4.0 and 5.0 files, as well as Acrobat 6.0 files.

• Button tool Create interactive buttons with rollover states using the new button tool. InDesign CS auto-

matically adds basic interactivity to a button, which you can then modify to suit your project. You can

control whether the button is visible, whether it prints, and how it behaves when a mouse interacts with it

(options include Go to first page, last page, next page, next view, previous page, previous view, a URL, and

other options). Export interactive buttons in Acrobat 6.0 PDF files.

• Embed movie and audio files Use extensive controls to set up the video, audio, or Flash files you want to

include in Acrobat 6.0 PDF files. Specify whether those file are embedded in or linked to the PDF file. Also

set playback and viewing options. You can, for example, choose to include a thumbnail image, called a

poster, in the InDesign CS layout, to help users identify embedded multimedia files and for printing.

The PSD image of the woman in the InDesign page above includes a spot color channel. With the expanded support for PSD files, InDesign CS can now place and output this file.

import. You can view this metadata by selecting the

imported file and choosing Link File Info from the

Links palette menu.

In addition, InDesign CS offers enhanced customizable

support for embedding metadata in InDesign layouts.

When you choose File > File Info, you can enter a wide

range of information about the document, including a

title, author, description, keywords, copyright status,

copyright notice, and copyright URL, as well as detailed

information about the file’s origins, such as date cre-

ated, city/state or province/country, credit, source,

headline, instructions, and more. An Advanced tab in

the File Info dialog box enables you to append, replace,

and save metadata information.

About metadata and its role in publishing

For the past 16 years, the publish-ing industry has been focused on transitioning from older methods of producing pages to digital processes. With rare exception, that digital conversion is com-plete and a new challenge faces the industry: How to distribute these digital assets across mul-tiple media efficiently and cost effectively without compromising how they look or losing control over digital rights.

The answer is to build intelligence into assets, so that all of the graphics, images, design layouts, and other assets being deployed contain information—or meta-data—about how they were designed, who designed them, and so on. That’s why Adobe authored the Adobe Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP), an open XML-based standard for managing assets. Because XMP embeds metadata in files, the information travels with the file whether or not a database or publishing system is managing it—making assets significantly easier to retrieve and use in a variety of contexts.

Embed metadata in InDesign documents to track key details about their creation, copyright status, and more.

View your original InDesign layout in a special viewer, then drag objects from the layout into a Web page to interactively con-struct the Web version of your design. GoLive CS automatically retrieves the files asso-ciated with the objects from the package and uses those underlying files to build robust Web pages.

Package for GoLive command

InDesign CS and GoLive CS deliver a dramatically new, more visually and creatively oriented way to repur-

pose print assets for the Web. This new approach builds on two strengths in these programs: flexible layout

and creative tools and powerful XML support. By working with InDesign CS and GoLive CS together, you

get the right tools for the right job in the print-to-Web workflow. These tightly integrated tools automate

many Web preparation tasks for you, so you can focus on your design work. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: In InDesign, choose File > Package for GoLive to export the components of your print layout for

easy repurposing in GoLive CS. You specify certain options for the package, such as how InDesign should

prepare your images, and then InDesign handles the rest. If you’ve tagged your content with XML tags, you

can do even more with the content in GoLive CS—however, you don’t need to tag your content to get the

results you desire. Just as with a print package, InDesign copies all of the necessary files to a package folder. It

exports the stories in your layout as InCopy CS stories, prepares images as Web-ready GIF or JPEG images,

and produces supporting XML files, a table of contents, and a special viewer PDF for use in GoLive CS.

Step 2: Optional. Open the table of contents for the package in your Web browser to see a complete list of

all its content. InDesign can even open the table of contents automatically after producing the package.

Step 3: Import the package into GoLive CS. Using a special viewer that displays the pages just as you laid

them out in InDesign, you drag and drop content into your Web layout. You stay focused on how you want

the Web pages to look, while GoLive CS handles image conversion tasks using its Smart Objects technol-

ogy (this enables image cropping and smart rerendering if you resize images smaller or larger). GoLive CS

generates a cascading style sheet (CSS) automatically from the InDesign text styles, or maps the InDesign

styles to a CSS on your site. In taking care of the text conversion for you, GoLive even converts fancy type

settings, such as ligatures, which can’t be displayed in live text online.

Step 4: Dynamically update a package-based site with changes. If you make changes to your InDesign

layout and want those changes to be reflected in the Web pages you’ve created, InDesign CS and GoLive CS

automate this process too. Just update the original package, and the Web pages based on that package will

update automatically as well.

Integration with Adobe InCopy CS

Adobe InCopy CS software is a professional writing and editing program that integrates tightly with Adobe

InDesign CS to deliver a complete solution for collaborative editorial workflow. InCopy CS includes edito-

rial workflow management technology that enables designers and editors to work on the same InDesign CS

document simultaneously without interfering with each other’s work. InCopy CS gives editors 100% accu-

rate information about line breaks and up-to-the-minute visual feedback about page design, so editors can

copyfit text with complete insight into how the copy and design interact. This support for parallel work-

flows reduces the number of review and revision cycles, and ultimately streamlines the time it takes to get

publications to market. It also puts copy-fitting control back in the hands of editors who have more control

over the integrity of their editorial content. InCopy CS is available directly from Adobe. It’s also available as

part of powerful editorial systems developed by third party developers and systems integrators.

Exporting JPEG filesYou can now export pages and objects as JPEG files with control over their image quality (low, medium, high, and maximum), as well as their format method (baseline or progressive). This enables you to incorporate JPEG images of InDesign layouts into Microsoft Office files (for example, to create a client report), and it provides an alternate way to give thumbnails of a project to clients for review.

Additional enhancementsAdobe InDesign CS continues a long InDesign tradition of being packed with major new features and hun-

dreds of enhancements that incorporate customer feedback and streamline the design workflow. Many of

these enhancements have been described in tips and sidebars throughout this document. Here are a few

others not to be missed:

• Copy associated master pages when you drag and drop pages from one InDesign CS document to another.

• Easily override all master page settings on any page or on a master page that’s based on another master page.

• Enter percentages in any text edit box to quickly compute a percentage of an object or attribute’s original

value. For example, enter 50% in the Stroke palette edit box to cut an object’s stroke in half.

• Make the most of new shortcuts for aligning and distributing objects. Also use the universal shortcut for the

Hand tool—Option–Spacebar (Mac OS) or Alt–Spacebar (Windows). And pick up shortcuts more easily

• Quickly delete objects by dragging and dropping them from the InDesign CS layout to the Trashcan (Mac

OS) or onto the Desktop (Windows).

• Automatically delete the InDesign CS preferences file and return to default settings with keyboard short-

cuts: Press Control–Option–Command–Shift (Mac OS) or Ctrl–Alt–Shift (Windows) as the program

launches.

View the InDesign layout within InCopy

to help write and edit copy to fit with a clear view of how the copy

will work with the design.

View active stories in the Story List palette, and track and manage the stories’ status. For example, see that a story is checked out elsewhere and is out of date in your file because of changes made.

Quickly check who has a story checked out (the crossed out pencil icon indicates that the story is not available to you.
