LISTENING AND RESPONDING There are three interwoven themes in today’s readings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to find it. How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don’t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God’s promptings will lead us in the right way. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Lapa began to bother about her daughter’s appearance, teaching her how to behave, mak-ing her wash her face and neck properly, keep-ing her hair combed and tidy—in short doing all she could to make her attractive so that if any-one should come along to ask for her they should find her pretty. But Catherine had quite different ideas, however much, out of respect, she kept quiet about the vow she had made, and she refused to do any of these things: she was fully occupied trying to please, not men, but God. Her mother anxiously watched the way she was behav-ing and one day she summoned her married daughter Bonaventura and told her to get Catherine to follow her mother’s advice and make herself beautiful like everyone else. Lapa knew that Catherine was very fond of Bonaven-tura and that she would listen to her more than to anyone else, as in fact she did; and as a result of Bonaventura’s determined efforts the Lord permitted the young girl to agree to pay more attention to her dress, though at the same time keeping firmly to her vow not to take a husband. Lapa comenzó a preocuparse por la apariencia de su hija, enseñándole cómo comportarse, hacién-dole lavarse la cara y el cuello correctamente, manteniendo su cabello peinado y ordenado; en resumen, haciendo todo lo posible para que sea atractiva, de modo que si alguien venga a pregun-tar para ella deberían encontrarla bonita. Pero Cat-herine tenía ideas bastante diferentes, sin embar-go, por respeto, guardó silencio sobre el voto que había hecho, y se negó a hacer cualquiera de es-

tas cosas: estaba completamente ocupada tratando de complacer, no a los hombres, sino a Dios. Su madre observó ansiosamente la forma en que se comportaba y un día llamó a Bonaventura, su hija casada, y le dijo que hiciera que Catherine siguiera los consejos de su madre y se hiciera hermosa como todos los demás. Lapa sabía que Catherine le tenía mucho cariño a Bona-ventura y que la escucharía más que a cualquier otra per-sona, como de hecho lo hizo; y como resultado de los es-fuerzos decididos de Bonaventura, el Señor permitió que la joven aceptara prestar más atención a su vestido, aunque al mismo tiempo se mantuvo firme en su promesa de no casarse. ESCUCHANDO Y RESPONDIENDO En las lecturas de hoy se entrecruzan tres temas: escuchar a Dios, la fe vs. las buenas obras y perder nuestra vida para poder sal-varla. ¿De qué manera están relacionados estos temas? En Isaías, el Siervo Sufriente padece muchos disgustos y burlas, pero puede soportarlos porque ha escuchado los mensajes de Dios día tras día. El salmo nos dice que Dios también escucha. Dios escu-cha nuestras súplicas y siempre está dispuesto a salvarnos. Cuando nuestra fe se profundiza, también se profundiza nuestro deseo de hacer obras de justicia y caridad que fortalecen el Reino de Dios. Dios guía nuestras acciones de maneras que muchas veces no podemos ver y no siempre vemos los resultados. Se nos llama en fe a confiar en que lo que hacemos es suficiente y que nuestra disposición a escu-char los mensajes de Dios nos guiará por el camino correcto.
