INTERVIEW BY: SEANZHA KEMAL

ITC: How did you guys get together and form what is now Monkey to Millionaire? WISNU: “We went to the same school, formed a band, tried making our own music, and here we still are.” AGAN: “What Wisnu said.” EMIR: “What Wisnu said.” ITC: How did you first get into playing music? WISNU: “I wanted to learn how to play Ugly Kid Joeʼs “Mr. Recordman”, Nirvanaʼs “Polly” and “Lithium” and Metallicaʼs “Nothing Else Matters” on guitar. I wanted a lot, hahaha. Once I could play them, I tried writing my own songs using the chords I had learnt.” AGAN: “In junior high, our music teacher told us to form bands. And I thought it wouldnʼt be cool if you couldnʼt play an instrument, so I suddenly decided to learn Weezerʼs “Pink Triangle” on guitar.” EMIR: “I wanted to play drums because of listening to Nirvana and Weezer, but if you trace it further back, it was 80s rock bands like Bon Jovi and Skid Row that got me interested in drums.” ITC: Who is the main influence in your music?

WISNU: “My older brother brought home Nirvanaʼs Nevermind, I caught the bug and became a victim of Nirvanaʼs ʻ90s invasion.” AGAN: “Rivers Cuomo, Alex James and currently Iʼm really into Josh Homme.” EMIR: “Nirvana, Weezer, Shed Seven. I grew up listening to those bands.” ITC: Whatʼs the story behind “Strange Is the Song In Our Conversation”? EMIR: “Wisnu in love.” AGAN: “Itʼs about Wisnu trying to woo a girl.” WISNU: “Itʼs based on a real-life late night conversation with someone, where we tried very hard to not laugh, and ended up singing the Doorsʼ “People Are Strange” very quietly.” ITC: What is the biggest goal you guys want to achieve as a band? AGAN: “To provide for my family through music. Amen!” WISNU: “For each member of Monkey to Millionaire to be able to buy our mothers a fully-furnished home, and remain a band that enjoys what we do.” EMIR: “For Monkey to Millionaire to be appreciated for our musicality, which will also lead to appreciation in other aspects, for example material, opportunities, etc.”

MONKEY TO MILLIONAIRE

  5

ITC: If you could go out on tour with anybody, dead or alive, who would it be? AGAN: “Blur, Queens of the Stone Age.” WISNU: “Right now, Miles Kane. I want to see what guitar effect pedals he uses.” EMIR: “With Bruce Lee, so we can learn jet kune do during the break.” ITC: Do you guys have any other hobbies besides, obviously, making music? WISNU: “I just draw.” AGAN: “Finger exercise, alias playing video games.“ EMIR: “Playing football, playing video games, traveling, watching concerts.” ITC: If you had to listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be? WISNU: “Again, Nirvana. But In Utero.” AGAN: “Weezerʼs Pinkerton, I still listen to it now.”

EMIR: “Hot Fuss by The Killers.” ITC: Whatʼs the craziest experience youʼve ever had while on tour? WISNU: “Made a monk mad!” AGAN: “After we played a gig in Makassar, at the hotel this monk got mad at me for being noisy while I was only wearing a t-shirt and underpants, while the others did nothing to help. They just hid behind the wall and giggled. Bastards!” EMIR: “Too explicit for me to tell you, haha.” ITC: Finally, do you have anything to say to your fans? WISNU: “Thank you for all youʼve done so far and will do in the future.” AGAN: “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you guys!” EMIR: “Thanks for all the support.”

INTERVIEW BY: SEANZHA KEMAL

ITC: How did you guys get together and form “Everyone Everywhere”?

“The Band was started in 2008. Aaroun and I (Drew) lived together in a big shitty house with about 15 other guys and another 6 on the lawn in tents. It was nuts. I remember I asked aaroun to start a pop punk band with me about 3 times before he finally said yes. Then we got together with the rest of the guys over the years, through other bands breaking up, and promises of the good life of living in a van and showering once a week. We don’t really consider ourselves a band, just really good friends.”

ITC: What’s the story behind “You and Me to the Moon Dude”?

“You and me to the moon dude is about My cat Kiwi (the purr monster) who got really sick one day, so I tried to bring him to the vet on my electric scooter, but after realizing battery was dead I just ran with Kiwi in my arms the 2 blocks to the vet. By the time I got there he had pissed all over me and vet thought I was crazy. True story.”

ITC: What is the biggest goals you guys want to achieve as a band? And what are Everyone Everywhere’s future plans?

“Our biggest goal is to just keep writing music that we that we love and to continue touring. Future plans include the release of a 4 song EP in March, touring the planet, a cooking show, our own line of pop tarts.”

ITC: From now what state or country you are dying to visit? And why?

Drew: “England would be rad; I have lots of family there and love fish and chips.”

Aaron: “Definitely Belize. So many cool ruins and beaches to explore. And I want to sleep in one of those sweet huts on stilts above a reef.”

Dave: “I would have to say Japan. I have never left this continent and I would love to experience the culture shock of visiting somewhere very different then Canada. Plus I love sushi almost as much as Pop-Punk.”

EVERYONE EVERYWHERE

  7

Leo: “Russia. Hype sledding.”

Gabe: “Definitely New Zealand. All because of lord of the rings. Shit yeah!”

ITC: If you could date anybody dead or alive, who would it be?

Drew: “Katy Perry”

Aaron: “Natalie Portman”

Dave: “Mystique from X-Men, duh.”

Leo: “Gabe’s Mom”

Gabe: “Gabe tried to copy Aaron so we pick John Stamos for him instead.”

ITC: What would you do if you had boobs for a day?

Drew: “Use them to get a good deal on a new tour van.”

Aaron: “Tittyfuck Leo’s ass.”

Dave: “I'd wear a red one piece Baywatch swimsuit, and run everywhere as fast as possible.”

Leo: “Tittyfuck my own ass.”

Gabe: “Well what do you think? I wouldn't leave my house. That's for sure.”

ITC: If there’s a zombie outbreak, what would be your main weapon? And why?

Drew: “A gun I guess…”

Aaron: “Bruce Campbell. Chainsaw arm. Fact.”

Dave: “I would probably choose a stereo as my weapon. My ammo would be any maroon 5 album... That shit would make anything kill itself.”

Leo: “Dragon Z Super Saiyan.”

Gabe: “Something badass, like a flamethrower. Yeahhhhh.”

ITC: How do you guys promote your band, songs, and shows?

“We mostly use the Internet these days, postering seems to not matter anymore. Social Media sites such as facebook, twitter, youtube are usually the best bet. Also live shows and touring. Seeing a band play live is always the most effective”

ITC: Tell us about your next show and why we should be there

“We’re playing at Lucky Bar in Victoria on Feb. 29th. You should be there because it’s our first 19+ Show in Vic this year and our good friends The Harbour Sound are playing.”

ITC: Finally, do you have anything to say to your fans?

“Thanks for all the love over the past 4 years, we do it all for you guys. See everyone next tour!

Xoxo

Drew, Dave, Gabe, Leo and Aaroun.”

ITC: You released your first EP in 2009 and followed up with your sophomore EP in April of last year. Can you tell us the inspiration behind each oneʼs music?

Alan: “Our first EP, we were young kids, still in high school. Weʼd be really excited about playing music, really into upbeat fun stuff – so it was really songs about a high school kidʼs life. Thatʼs where the inspiration came from.”

Brandon: “Girls, relationships.”

Andy: “Popcorn.”

Kenny: “Yeah, popcorn.”

Andy: “Popcorn was my number one inspiration.”

Brandon: “Burritos.”

Alan: “Yeah, burritos! Those were our biggest inspirations (laughs).”

ITC: Whatʼs the writing process like for you guys?

Alan: “Itʼs a very collective effort, we all have our roles.”

Andy: “We would eat a whole bunch of chocolate and sit around in a circle. The first

thing that comes out of our mouths is our first song.”

Kenny: “Which usually is chocolate that comes out of our mouths, because weʼre eating it. The first thing that comes out, usually is, a little bit of chocolate.”

Brandon: “Usually Kenny comes up with the melodies and then weʼll add a corporation behind it and weʼll all collectively add lyrics. We all have a little part.”

ITC: How was it like working with Kenneth (Mount) and Zack (Odom), who produced albums for bands like Mayday Parade and We Are the In Crowd?

Brandon: “Theyʼre the coolest dudes ever.“

Kenny: “I love those guys, it was a blast working with them. I canʼt wait to get back and work with them again.”

Alan: “Weʼre actually planning on working with them again on the next album we do, theyʼre great guys.”

ITC: Is this your first time in Canada?

Kenny: “No, actually!”

Alan: “First time in Vancouver, first time playing in Canada.”

Brandon: “Count of three, Vancouver.”

Everyone: “One, two, three, Vancouver!”

ITC: Weʼre pretty big on hockey up here – do you guys follow any particular hockey or sports team?

Andy: “I love hockey.”

Brandon: “Carolina Hurricanes!”

Kenny: “New Jersey Devils.”

Alan: “I actually donʼt follow hockey at all, Iʼve never seen a hockey game.”

Andy: “Blue Jackets! (laughs)”

Alan: “I follow minor league womenʼs softball. Thatʼs kind of what Iʼm in to.”

ITC: Where do you see yourselves in five years time?

Alan: “I see us on stage, doing what we love, playing music. Hopefully making a living doing it. “

Andy: “I see ourselves in five years, being right back here in Vancouver.”

Kenny: “Yeah, at the Olympic Games.

Brandon: “Count of three, Olympic Games.”

Everyone: “One, two, three, Olympic Games!”

ITC: Lastly, if you could guest star on any TV show, what would it be and why?

Kenny: “It would be the Ellen Show because I love Ellen.”

Andy: “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, for me.”

Alan: “For me, itʼd be the Wizards of Waverly Place.”

Brandon: “The Hard Times of RJ Berger.”

  11

ITC: So, your new album, Siberia, just released awhile ago, what inspired you to write it?

“This time around, it came from a really happy place. When I listen to my first record it kinda more like a sad record. It’s a really happy record and it came from a really happy place like writing about fall in love for the first time, what you experience around you and its definitely came from a different place but a really good place.”

ITC: Can you describe Siberia in 5 words?

“Cool, happy, rock, greedy and pop.”

ITC: Are you going to release the acoustic version of Siberia soon?

“I don’t know. I mean I can play everything acoustically but I’m not sure. I hope so.”

ITC: What do you want to tell your fans through your music?

“I’m not trying to get a message out there. It just me writing what I wanna write and what I feel I need to say or what I’m going through. Its an experiencing with the media of art. You just get it out and it felt good.”

ITC: What inspired the name LIGHTS?

“It’s a nickname that came from my last name which Poxleitner and it’s the short version of Poxleitner.”

ITC: How do you feel about the judgement people make on you just by what they see?

“You can get that anywhere, especially being a girl in the industry with men. The best you can do is know who you are and know what you do best and go up there and kill it everyday and no matter what everyone else think.”

ITC: Is there any person that you admire the most? Who and why?

“My parents because of humility and kindness.”

ITC: What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not on tour (at home)?

“I like to play video game a lot like World Craft and I like zombie right now because of Walking Dead. I like drawing and painting like popart. Its fun to exercise art in different ways.”

ITC: You have two EPs out, can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind each oneʼs music?

C: “Yeah, I would say Letting Go was our first starting. We have A Short Story Long. We did that when we were around thirteen, which was pretty funny to look back at now. Weʼre proud of it for what it was and I think thereʼs some awesome songs on there. Then we have our Letting Go EP which was the one that followed up with that, I like that one a lot too. Thereʼs some really good songs on that one as well. And then our newest album, which is going to be our debut album, itʼs called – actually, Iʼm not going to tell you anything. But thereʼs going to be some awesome songs on that one, weʼre really excited for it.”

B: “Tease you.”

ITC: Your new single was released just before this tour began – where can people hear the song?

B: “You can hear it on YouTube; we have a lyric video on our channel. And you can buy it on iTunes, itʼs also available there. Feel free to pick it up.”

ITC: You also post covers on YouTube that have gotten extremely positive responses. How do you choose what songs to cover?

C: “Well, thank you. I donʼt know - itʼs always different. We sometimes will just look at the top of the charts and see what songs we like personally, and you know, weʼd be like itʼd be cool to put our own spin on this. Thatʼs the case for most of it. Our most recent one, our One Direction cover, was –“

B: “the best”

C: “by far the craziest. A ton of people were hitting up our Twitters and everything saying, ʻcover One Directionʼ, and weʼre like ʻletʼs give it a shot, letʼs do itʼ. We did that cover, it turned out great. We thought, at least the response is awesome, so itʼs really cool.”

BEFORE

YOU EXIT

  13

ITC: Your first national tour was opening for All Time Low in 2010 – do you feel like touring with a band such as ATL was a large step in the right direction for you guys?

C: “It was definitely a huge first step, we love those guys. We canʼt thank them enough for taking us out on tour. They got us a ton of fans and a lot of people that love our music. Of course, it was definitely a great step for us and Iʼm sure thereʼs many more steps to come. Right now, weʼre on tour with Allstar Weekend and itʼs going great, so – they definitely got us an awesome first start. Love those guys. “

ITC: Are you hoping to tour with them again in the future?

C: “Thatʼd be awesome. We would definitely love to tour with them again. Really cool guys, like I said. “

ITC: You headlined your own tour in October of 2011 – how was that experience?

C: “That was really awesome, it was pretty fun.“

B: “It was interesting, because weʼve never done our own headliner so it was kind of a fun experience. It was just a little short tour so it wasnʼt too big for us – but it was also big enough to show our fans that weʼre still alive.”

C: “We just wanted to get out and do some shows, while weʼre working on new music. We had a blast.”

ITC: Is this your guysʼ first time in Canada and the city of Vancouver?

B: “Yes.”

C: “Sure is. Actually, this is our first out of country show, weʼve never played an out of country show before.”

B: “Iʼve never even been out of the country.”

C: “There you go. Itʼs really awesome, we love it here and itʼs so weird seeing all the different signs – different everything.”

ITC: The band or song Iʼm obsessing with at the moment is...

C: “Marianas Trench.”

B: “I agree.”

ITC: Theyʼre from Vancouver! You guys shouldʼve invited them to the show.

C: “We love them; I wish they would show up. We would all fan girl and make them play the show instead of us.”

ITC: Whatʼs the worst piece of advice youʼve ever been given?

B: “Suck it up.”

C: “Yeah, suck it up. Thatʼs a tough one – I hate picking that one. But sometimes, itʼs what you got to do. And you know, just make the best of everything.”

ITC: If music wasnʼt your guysʼ career choice, what would each of you aspire to be instead?

B: “A magician”

C: “Magician (looks at Braiden), I was going to say that. I would do something with movies – I would want to be a director or an actor, something like that. I just love doing show stuff, I like being creative with everything.”

Attack Attack! – This Means War

BY: SEANZHA KEMAL

In the four-plus years since Attack Attack! released their debut full-length, Someday Came Suddenly, and two years since their self tittled album, this Ohio-based band finally comes out with a new album called This Means War.

According to the album facts: During the recording of "This Means War", the frontman, Caleb Shomo performed both of the clean and screaming vocals for the very first time, since 2010 Attack Attack! has used Sean Mackowski on tour to provide the clean vocals, Caleb shows what he can do vocally on this album,

with his clean vocals not just competent but crisp and his screams raw without becoming unintelligible.

My favorite songs on the album are probably The Revolution, The Motivation, The Wretched, and The Family. There weren't really any songs on the album that really gives me 100% eargasm, because Attack Attack!ʼs almost-danceable grooves are almost gone and covered under an avalanche of screamo parts and sludgy breakdowns

In my opinion... Even though they have never sounded smarter than this, this latest record will never find an audience on the dance floor, including me, I was hanging at a club and they played any songs from this album I think I would just pass this, sorry Attack Attack!

I know, There will be people who disagree with me but, Iʼm glad to see a band releasing a new album where they allow themselves change their sound or trying something new instead of just to stay in their comfort zone.

Score: 6/10

Lana Del Rey – Born To Die

BY: SEANZHA KEMAL

Elizabeth “Lizzy” Grant (born 21 June 1986), better known as Lana Del Rey, is a singer-songwriter from Lake Placid, New York, United States. She is known for embellishing her songs and music videos with an eerily nostalgic vibe heavy on Americana themes, including images of surfing, Coney Island, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe, Love her or hate her, Lana Del Rey most likely couldnʼt care less and sheʼs not slowing down anytime soon. (I donʼt care about all the hate, her voice is amazing!)

Well, Iʼve listened to every song on this album and let me tell you one thing, the album is a sexy, sprawling ode to sex and death. This album opens with Born To Die, A slow, song where Lana sings about walking on the wild side and pleads “Donʼt make me sad / Donʼt make me cry.” She has a creepy-cool voice ripe for pain and itʼs at the front of the mix on this song, which features drum ʻnʼ bass elements.

The next song is Video Games, You know this one. One of her best songs that made the internet go crazy over her when its released, this song contains full, rich production, itʼs another vehicle for her old soul voice. Lana told us the lyrics were inspired by two broken relationships in her past

And in Dark Paradise, Lana brings us to the whole new dark world with its solitary drum beat and gothic and romantic synths, “Everytime I close my eyes/ It's like a dark paradise/No one compares to you/I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side.” This is one of the most standout tracks on the album, thanks to the somewhat harsh synths.

Whoever reading this, trust me, I know you think sheʼs overrated or blahblah… but youʼre going to f*****g this record, I dare you to give it one listen and not want to crack a beer open and run around the flower field with flowers on your head with your best friends and listen again, and again, and again. Iʼm pretty sure somewhere out there, other musicians are hating themselves for not making this record, because its so goooooooooood

Score: 8.5/10

Ryan Adams – 01/24/12

BY: ANGELA WINNIE

David Ryan Adams, a 37 years old song writer from Jacksonville, North Carolina played an acoustic show with Jason Isbell back on January 24th on Music Center at Strathmore, North Bethesda, MD. Ryan Adams who just released his thirteen album back on October, open his first show of the year with playing Oh My Sweet Carolina followed with two singles from the new album, Ashes &

  16

Fire and Dirty Rain. During the set, Ryan keep switching places on the stage from sitting on the center, playing piano on on the left and standing up on the right. Ryan played 24 songs total that night followed with his jokes about having an unplanned song and thank you song. The time he was going to play Let It Be, he forgot how to play the song so the crowd got a treat from him; which he ended up playing his Oasis cover-song, Wonderwall. After he close his set with everyoneʼs all time favorite, Come Pick Me Up, he did an uncore and continue played 3 cover songs with Jason Isbell. They also play Whiskeytownʼs Jacksonville Skyline and close the set with Alabama cover of Love In The First Degree.

It was my second time seeing Ryan Adams live. He never dissapoint me at all and I always walk outside the building with tears of happiness. Both shows were totally worth it and hopefully I can see him live again someday!

Everything’s Fine Symphony Soldier Tour – 01/28/12

BY: ALEXIS POQUETTE

Las Vegas rockers The Cab and Arizonaʼs pop rockers The Summer Set made a stop on their co headlining Everythingʼs Fine Symphony Soldier tour in Milwaukee on January 28, 2012. After multiple lineup changes, dropping from FBR, and a delay in recording, last year the band came out with Symphony Soldier, which reminded the fans of The Cab they loved in the beginning. In support of their album, they headed out on the road with some of their best friends, The Summer Set, to support their album Everythingʼs Fine.

The Cab was first to hit the stage at The Rave. They opened up with their first track “Angel with a Shotgun”. The crowd sang along. As Alex Deleon sat towards the edge of the stage, he smiled, and the crowd reached out to grab his hand as they screamed along to the words. Deleonʼs presence on stage had an effect over the crowd. He could easily connect and made sure that everyone had a smile on their face. They took a moment to dim the lights and Alex talked about their prolonged absence from the music and scene and reassured fans that the next album would come out much sooner than the Whisper War and Symphony Soldierʼs three-year gap. They played part of “Vegas Skies” which played directly into “Lovesick Fool.” The lights picked back up and then guys played a few more songs along with the hit “Take My Hand.” They walked off stage, but the crowd quickly picked up that there were a few more songs left to play. They chanted, until one by one the members ran back out and began to play their final two songs. Deleon got the crowd to jump around during “Bounce” with its bouncy beats and catchy chorus. They closed the night with their current hit “Bad.”

Once the stage was cleared off, The Summer Setʼs crew began to set up. The crowd huddled together, excitedly waiting for The Summer Set to come on. The last time that band played The Rave, there were roughly 100 kids in the crowd. This time double, if not triple the amount of kids was ready to sing along. The moment came where the lights dimmed and the crowd cheered as the band walked out. The band started off the night with “The Boys You Do”, a catchy pop tune that everyone in the crowd could sing and dance along to. The band had always had catchy songs and fun personalities, and on stage their presence stays true to that. All smiles, Brian Dales would come closer to the crowd and

  17

reach out his hand as he sang along. There wasnʼt really a moment where the things slowed down, song after song the band kept a high-energy performance all night. When the band began to play their big hit, “Chelsea”, the crowd erupted in screams. They played into “Thick as Thieves” before they walked off and waited for the chants to begin. The band ran back out to play a rendition of “Someone like You”. It was nice to see the variety and abilities that the band has, much similar to the different sounds and growth of “Love like This” and “Everythingʼs Fine.” The band closed the night with “Young.” The crowd cheered and gave a final round of applause. It was definitely going to be a night they would remember.

“Brand New” – Ksenia Dombo

“I just saw The Cab about two weeks ago, and they've been my favorite band for the last three years. They always put on such an amazing show and they are more unique than any band that

I've ever come across. The Cab have been the ones motivating me everyday and inspiring me to do so much with my life. If I could see them everyday, I would! Also, lately I've really been

missing Of Mice & Men! I'd love to see them again soon. Over the last year, they've become one of my favorites. Austin Carlile has a way of getting the crowd going like no frontman I've

ever seen. Its always incredible to see them perform!” – Hannah Branigan

“One of the bands I would like to see is The Cab, I've seen them a few times but I every show I go to always has something new that I have never seen before. DeLeon always shows a great shows and I love how every band member shines in their own way. Another band I would want to see is The Summer Set. I've watched every show they've had around the LA/OC Area since 2010. However they always perform a great show. Even on the recent tour, EFSS, Brian played guitar and even played a little drums of his own. Maroon 5 is a band I'm dying to see. For some reason, no matter what genre you listen to, Adam's voice always seems amazing and he gets not only the girls but everyone in the crowd wild. I would also like to see Young The Giant, The Xx, and if they ever go out of hiatus, Fall Out Boy!– Allyn Bernardo

“California pop-rock band Brighten is one of my favourite bands of all time, and seeing them play a show is one of my dearest wishes. Unfortunately, as of recent years they have not played any shows outside I some local hometown and acoustic shows. They've put out some excellent

music in the meantime, an EP Be Human, and I'll Always Be Around, which was self released in August of 2011. Their music has had a profound effect on me and other fans, because they

have beautiful honest lyrics and music. When the band decides to tour again, I will be there no matter what.” – Phoenix Robson

“Ryan Adams & The Cardinals. Iʼve seen Ryan Adams live twice and its only himself with two acoustics guitar, a harmonica and a piano and I would die to see a Ryan Adams & The Cardinals reunion show and see them perform songs together again like what I usually see on youtube. It seems perfect yet itʼs probably impossible to happen. Also, I would like to see Ivory live. Theyʼre music are amazing and Nathanielʼs voice is just plain beautiful.” – Angela Winnie

“The End of the World Tour. I absolutely love Mayday Parade and The Downtown Fiction. I don't listen to We the Kings/Anarbor as much but their music is decent enough for me to have

gone to this tour - if it came to a city near me.” – Chloe Hoy

“Concert wishlist? Brighten, Augustana, and Parachute. They are in my top favorite bands and I think their styles and personalities would mix so well. Also, they're all bands I've always wanted to see live, though I've seen Augustana already last year. But at the time, I didn't really know who they were. Hopefully it happens in real life soon!” – Michelle Johnson

“I would love to see Bombay Bicycle Club just because they are the most up and coming indie cross overs at the moment. They are indie the sense that they have a completely different

sound than a lot of independent artists right now. They have a fresh, new sound that will surely
