What are the benefits of What are the benefits of Drumcafe ?Drumcafe ?An Experience

of Unity Drumming is a powerful experience of unity for a group. Sometimes this is the first time a large group have ever actually done something TOGETHER.

A drum session will RELAX and ENERGISE an audience, leaving them refreshed, revitalised and ready for more information, training, work etc

The experience is extremely unusual and will be remembered for a long time. It will mark the occasion as something special, and will be talked about for long after the event itself.

There are many “learnings” gained from a Drumcafe session and the analogies between an orchestra and a team can give great insight. There has to be collaboration, listening and contribution of energy. The synergy between an individual and the group is the essence of teamwork. A piece of music, like a company, is made of many parts which have to work in harmony together to succeed.

Fun and breaking barriers

Its fun and everybody can join in. It breaks the ice and gets everyone into a great mood. You get to see a different side to your colleagues.

Where can you use Where can you use Drumcafe ?Drumcafe ?Opening and

closing of Conferences

Adding an interactive element will make it exciting, energising and unforgettable. Energise the opening and you will feel the effect the whole day … end on a high note for the closing.

The drum session is an analogy for teamwork and we will facilitate both the session, and if necessary, a discussion afterwards around the “learnings”. We can create a programme specifically for you, for example:

• Unity in Diversity• The whole is greater than the sum of its parts • Something in the company represents the base rhythm• Group energy is the key to teamwork• Rapid Capability developmentWe have drummed for black tie events , formal dinners etc . The

drumming will break the ice and create a relaxed and positive atmosphere while at the same time offering an unusual theme.

Drumming is a great experience to give to your team. Besides the obvious fun factor there are many other benefits too.

“WE NEED AN ACTIVITY THAT WILL DE-STRESS OUR PEOPLE,” SAID THE MD, “BUT AT THE SAME TIME NOT PUT THEM TO SLEEP. SOMETHING THAT WILL REALLY MAKE THEM FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES. SOMETHING ACTIVE, CHALLENGING, AND AT THE SAME TIME FUN... AND I DON’T WANT TO REPEAT OUR LAST WEEKEND AWAY THING DOWN AT THE FARM.” THE ANSWER, ACCORDING TO SOME, IS A CORPORATE DRUMMING EVENT, A RELATIVE NEWCOMER TO THE ORGANISATIONAL SCENE.

FOR THOSE WHO QUESTION the validity of drumming in the business sphere, there is some use in thinking about its history. For centuries it has been a part of the world’s indigenous peoples’ culture. It has always been an important part of the ceremony at weddings, births, deaths, harvest, rites of passage. It unifies people. Today, pure percussion activities can be enjoyed by all, regardless of ethnic and cultural background, musical preferences or age range, making participation effective in creating and promoting fun and positive multi generational experiences. The specific percussion activities used in South Africa are based on a number of ethnic traditions including African (especially West African), South and Central American, Middle Eastern and Native American.

The drumming event Participants sit in a circle and actively make music together, learning simple rhythms which create a strong sense of group identity and belonging. Sustained repetition of a steady beat acts to bring them together physically, emotionally and mentally. The challenge is to ensure that each person feels that they are an integral part of the process and that their rhythmic output contributes to the group’s performance, increasing team spirit. But drumming is not only about team development, it is also about personal growth. The iterative nature of the sound focuses the mind and undivided attention helps let go typical mental distractions that interfere with being centred and energised. Through the sound and the beat, body and mind are vitalised and motivated, encouraging an enhanced clarity of focus.

In addition, the recurrent circular rhythms interspersed at intervals with new or additional poly-rhythms, can be seen a metaphors for adjustment and change. The introduction of these variations is an insightful way to break rigid patterns of communication in a non- threatening context. Participants become conscious of the need to be adaptable, flexible and open to fresh thoughts and ideas.

Another learning point is that if individuals fall out and lose the beat, there are always others to pull them back. The strength of the group keeps the rhythm going and gets them back on track. This adjustment is a useful metaphor for developing new patterns, belief systems, and better ways of interacting as a team. The analogy with the workplace is obvious. A good thing about drumming is that it is accessible to all. People can participate even though they have little or no previous musical background o training. This allows for immediate success regardless of the player’s musical aptitude, physical ability or disability. But drumming is much more than accessibility and physical activity. Good drumming can be likened to ongoing conversation.

First the call and response patterns require excellent listening, both the time of change and the type of change. Second, drummers must listen to each other to play together in perfect tempo. This is not the moment to be ahead or behind the group, it is the opportunity be one with the group. The repetitive nature of drumming makes it a de-stresser.

Research indicates that drumming for even brief periods, changes brainwave patterns and dramatically reduces stress. Through letting off steam a sense of balance is created, which is said to be the healthiest, most accessible and fastest way to reconnect with the “inner spirit”. The research into healing effects of this ancient practice are ongoing. As the body becomes comfortable with a pattern that has been repeated for an extended time the conscious mind relaxes, and tensions and inhibitions are let go. Physiological changes that occur in the brain and body and, as a result, participants enter a state of relaxed, effortless, energized clarity that athletes and martial arts experts experience. They encounter feelings of inner strength and the ability to take on challenges, as well as create a connectedness to others in the team. These feelings are the same whether the group is a village, an organization, It is part of our natural heritage.

Major articles describing the healing effects of this ancient practice have appeared in newspapers and magazines, such as the New York Times and Newsweek. These and other articles have reported results of studies demonstrating the calming focusing effect of group drumming sessions on a variety of audiences. In the United States, such major corporations as Motorola, AT&T, and Levi Strauss, use drumming to promote team building in middle management.

Benefits to the organization Playing music as part of a group is a unique opportunity for employees to learn how to be part of a team while still having the opportunity to express their individual creative talents in a structured way. Results of drumming sessions indicate increased cooperation, improved problem solving skills and enhanced workplace harmony. Experienced drum circle facilitators play a pivotal role in assisting the group to develop a unified focus and making the experience positive and enjoyable for all participants. Ideally facilitators should have an understanding of group processes and learning styles. No matter how diverse the group, they should adapt and present material in a variety of forms to empathies with the needs of the participants, both individually and as a group, in order to create an environment that results in a constructive and useful learning experience for all. Furthermore, they can add to the cultural diversity of the group’s experience by sharing their knowledge of world music. Common points raised include gaining a greater insight into their own potential, the importance of team work, the fact that they can work alongside others, whether they like them or not. They are often surprised by the ability of others whom they have not previously seen as having any skills. They see that togetherness, unity of direction and purpose as well as the impact of the event, encourage positive outcomes. Conclusion: Group drumming is a powerful vehicle which creates excitement, connecting individuals to the new and shared experience of making music together, helping them step outside of their normal entrenched patterns of learned interaction. The resulting shift in perception, raised spirits and feelings of personal and group power is immediately transferable to the workplace. Organizations have lost something in the relentlessly focused pursuit of production and profits: camaraderie, loyalty, a sense of family — and fun. Coming together to play music can help a business restore these qualities and make a difference to the functioning of the team The simple truth is drumming is a great way to bring people together and to create a feeling of harmony and community. In addition, it’s fun. It may not be the answer to all problems, but if it gets everybody together and in great spirits and re-energised about team work — then let’s drum together!
