Begin your Exploding Set with a five-round 2-Drop PodCast Bead

Many beading stitches can be converted to what is known as “2-drop” by doubling the bead count in each stitch. Changing counts like this results in excitingly different fabrics and edges.

When choosing beads, note that we rely on size 8° round beads for the center rings of all of our Pods.

We recommend precision cylinder beads for the remain-der of the work. Seed beads can be used, but rounds soft-en the geometry. Use any medium-weight beading thread.

Choose 20-24 Points for your Exploding Set and build the PodCast Bead to five rounds as shown below:

To bead the PodCast in 2-drop, just remember that where you would normally place one bead (in the peyote fabric) use two. Where you would normally place two beads (at the increases) pick up four beads instead.

The example shown has 22 points. We count all of them, up and down (or in and out, if you are viewing a Rick-Rack as a flat star).

More points mean more visual complexity, and more time beading. More points can also make a longer piece.

This Exploding Set is designed to cast off neckpiec-es, 2-drop Casting Spines, Spiral Coils, big flower brooches and 2-drop Rick-Rack Bangles that can be built high and tailored to fit.

The yellow Rick-Rack was crafted on the 22-point PodCast shown as our example. The green has 20 points, but they can each be used to create the same type of pieces.

Both of these counts can be built to any height or spread, and whatever number of points you choose will be useful as there are many opportunities to size and tailor the components that will be created.

Investigate our 2-Drop patterns following this Exploding Set to see examples of what different counts can do.

ROUND 2

Square-stitch four increase beads onto each round bead in the ring.

CGB uses size 11° cylinder beads for our pieces, but round beads work too if they are evenly sized. Rounds will always give a softer, less geometric form than cylinders.

Making a PodCast Bead is always easiest if you choose two different colours for the increase placements, as it allows easy visual sorting of the points to be half up, and half down. If the increase placements are all in the same colour, it can be confusing to keep the beadwork neatly sorted in later rounds.

After placing the final set of increases, pass through several ring beads and then step up in readiness for Round 3 by exiting through one side of any set of increase beads.

Using at least a meter of thread, make a sturdy ring from an even number of size 8° round beads.

Each bead in the ring will represent one point of your finished PodCast Bead. Half of the points will be on one side, and half will be on the other, which is why we choose an even number.

Reinforce the circle with several passes of thread, and make a knot in the thread to help it stay tight over the lifetime of the beadwork. To step up for Round 2, pass through several beads to hide your knot and exit the ring through any bead,

Using two quite different colours for the in-crease placements helps you sort them neatly

to alternate sides as they are placed.

ROUND 3

Place 4-bead increases on the top of each set square-stitched to the center ring in Round 2.

Each new increase placed sits directly on top of the Round 2 beads, and is placed as a 2-drop Herringbone increase.

The previous round’s step-up emerges through two beads of one of the increase stacks placed in Round 2.

To complete the stitch, pick up four beads and pass down through the two remaining side beads.

Pick up two spacer beads on your thread and pass through two side beads in the next increase stack on the other side of the ring.

Continue around the ring, placing 4-bead increases on each point and 2-drop spacers in between each stack, and then step up in readiness for Round 4.

A helpful tip for Round 2

One stitch is sufficient for a Round 2

increase placement.

Two square stitches will reinforce the

increase placements for soft beaders.

When crafting the square-stitched second round, beaders with a soft tension may want to pass through each square stitch twice to strengthen the core of their Pod-Cast Bead.

A springy (but not overtight) tension is best to make sure that your casting Pod is flexible, energetic and can stand on its own legs.

STEP BY STEP 2-DROP PODCAST: Finishing Steps

ROUND 4

Repeat the 4-bead increases on top of each point, and add two 2-drop peyote stitches in between each set of spacers from Round 3.

At this point, the spacers begin to obstruct the view of the first round of increase placements. At the end of the circle, step up for Round 5.

ROUND 5: Finish

Repeat the 4-bead increase on the top of each point, and add three 2-drop peyote stitches in between each set of spacers from Round 4.

After completing this round, rein-force the edge of the PodCast Bead by passing through every bead in Rounds 4 and 5 with your thread.

This final pass of thread will ensure a long life for your PodCast Bead and will allow you to add a bit of tension if your work is too soft.

With each round placed, the peyote fabric

(seen in blue on our sample) continues to grow.

The 2-Drop Exploding Set

Coming next on the Exploding Set: Adding 12 rounds of flat or circular 2-Drop Rick-Rack on the edge of your reinforced PodCast Bead from Step 5.

Plan your Rick-Rack colours with this helpful 2-drop graph, which shows 12 rounds of stitching. Print it out and colour it in with felt pens or coloured pencils.
