Promise and peril in tech

e common wisdom these days is that every business is a technology business, but it might be more true to say that every business is a business that wrestles with technology — trying to make the most of the opportunities it o ers while minimizing the disruption and disintermediation in inevi-tably brings — and accounting is no excep-tion, according to the profession’s leaders.

In an informal survey of the top gures in accounting, technology and technology-re-lated issues were top of mind, with industry experts citing a wide range of implications for accountants, from the dangers posed by automation and hackers to the new services springing up in data analytics. “ e issue of technology is reaching across the profes-sion and having an impact on human cap-

With the profession clamoring to hire younger accountants — and desperate to retain the ones they’ve got — firms are being forced not just to raise wages, but to move beyond just salary to try and recruit top talent, and the out-look for 2018 is no di erent.

Two recent industry salary guides shed some light on this shift in power to younger sta , giving hiring managers and leaders an

idea of what to anticipate in the year ahead.

In its “2018 Salary Guide,” Ac-counting Principals cites informa-tion from consulting firm Rain-makerThinking to the effect that the percentage of current Baby Boomers in the workforce sits at 30 percent, while Gen X, Gen Y/Millennials, and Gen Z come in at 27 percent, 28 percent, and 14 percent, respectively. e profes-

sion is quickly becoming a young person’s game, and with newer professionals in a position to easily nd new job situations, retention has become a prominent issue.

“Because it’s getting harder — and more expensive — to replace sta who leave for new jobs, rms are putting extra emphasis on re-tention,” writes sta ng rm Rob-ert Half in its “2018 Salary Guide.” “Managers know that top profes-

sionals are likely to look for new opportunities if they can’t envision their next steps at the company. In response, companies are mapping clear career paths and offering mentoring programs … [and] en-hancing their corporate cultures.”

According to the Accounting Principals’ salary guide, a March 2017 Google Consumer Survey polling 337 accounting, banking, and nance professionals found

that the three most important fac-tors Millennials consider when contemplating a job offer were “salary” (32 percent), “opportuni-ties for growth” (19 percent), and “company culture” (13 percent).

Similarly, in a poll of over 740 human resources professionals cited in Robert Half’s salary guide, the most common perks offered in North American businesses
