INSIDE THIS ISSUE

“As Nelson Mandela said ‘A

good head and a good heart

are a formidable combination’,

and genuine change requires

development of both. The

‘view’ of an interdependent

reality encourages us to work

altruistically for our clients but

also recognises that their diverse

needs are served by a multiplicity

of others – which is what is

meant by a centre-less network.

This ‘view’ encourages us to see

own individualistic motivation

through the lens of co-operative

working, as nothing happens in

isolation or consequence to a

greater whole. It also naturally

leads us to extending our

intention of helping others to

include other organisations –

they are people also. Through

this motivation I really believe

partners can move from legal

advice delivery characterised

by individual organisations with

limited reliance and knowledge

of other partners, into a county-

wide legal advice network with

seamless access and referral

infrastructure all with the right

motivation. This approach will till

the soil of positive working and

allow practices to grow that will

ultimately be in best interests of

our clients. “Darran Trute

Our ! rst newsletterWelcome to the rst edition of the

Nottinghamshire Advice Network

(NAN) Newsletter. NAN is a ve year

National Lottery funded project to

create a quality centre-less network

of legal advice provision. Where

partners co-ordinate services

for the most positive impact for

the people we help. NAN will be

launched in Spring 2010.

The world is becoming ever more

interdependent and inter-related.

This is also true of the advice sector.

NAN’s aim is to enable advice partners

to work in a way that accords with this

reality. At its heart are the individuals

we help, our clients. For them to truly

be the focus, requires a re-orientation

of advice partners, to engage with the

wider community of organisations

that serve client needs in increasingly

complicated and demanding ways.

This is achieved through by putting

ourselves in our clients shoes in the

beginning, middle and in the end of

the process of advice and through

utilising partner specialisms rather

than trying to accomplish everything

on our own.

What we’ve achieved so far

We have had a very productive

start to the project and headline

accomplishments to date are:

Membership criteria for the

network established. This

is linked to organisation

development plans with

peer support for prospective

members who need help

achieving the membership

criteria.

A draft vision and strategy

for the development of legal

services in Nottinghamshire

shared.

Prototype partnership website

created which exchanges

information among providers

and promotes a new common

approach to our clients. This

also provides partners with a

better understanding of each

others specialisms and delivery

locations.

A draft Partnership Agreement

has been circulated and

the Legal Entity currently is

currently being created.

“If you want to be incrementally better: Be competitive. If you

want to be exponentially better: Be cooperative.”

Summary of the project

e project has the overall following aims and objectives:

• To place the client at the heart of the advice delivery.

• To create a legally constituted advice network in Nottinghamshire to deliver a high quality legal advice for 100,000 people each year.

• To use a gateway assessment model of advice integrated with a virtual call centre.

• To develop an e! ective referral system between advice network partners and the wider community.

• For all partner and member organisations of NAN to be working to the same high quality standard.

• Develop an e! ective social campaigning to in" uence the development of social policy.

• Develop and implement a common approach to training and continuing professional development.

1We will start to share current

referral protocols amongst

partners with the view to developing

a common referral system.

2The partnership will research

models for advice delivery that

will have the most positive impact for

clients in a collaborative environment.

Currently this is based on the gateway

assessment model.

3We will continue to develop a

more complete picture of the

current state of service provision

through commissioned work.

4A launch event will start the

process of planning services to

enable partners and members to co-

ordinate delivery approaches which

maximise integration and

coordination

5The network will begin to

research the most appropriate

use of virtual call centre technology

to make best use of partner

specialisms distributed across the

county.

6We will start to develop

monitoring and review

processes to ensure high quality

standards.

7We will also start to review

marketing and communication

approaches undertaken by individual

partners and members to maximise

NAN impact.

We are in the process of developing a

website with useful information for both

clients and advice providers alike.

This includes a frequently asked question

section which allows clients to help

themselves where possible.

It also provides continually refined

information about each partner in the

network, showing where their help is

available and in which advice areas.

If you have more suggestions please let us

know.
