Battle--of AtlanticSu.nday Observed

Battle of the Atlantic Sunday wasobserved across Canada and in shipsat sea on May 4, except for Halifax,where observance was postponed forone week to await the return to portof ships engaged in exercises.

Favoured by ideal weather and othercircumstances, the observances ap­peared, judging by press reports, tohave been the most widespread andbest attended in recent years.

Observances in Ottawa were uniquelyhonoured by the presence of PrinceBernhard of the Netherlands, who laida wreath honouring war dead at theNational War Memorial in Confedera­tion Square. A wreath on behalf ofthe Royal Canadian Navy was laid byRear-Admiral E. P. Tisdall, Vice-Chiefof the Naval Staff.

Another highlight of the Ottawa cere­monies was the presence of the Stada­cona band, which played the mov­ing orchestrated Last Post after thewreaths were laid.

Halifax and Dartmouth a week laterwitnessed parades of almost 6,000 navalpersonnel in commemoration of theBattle of the Atlantic, About 130 offi­ocersand men from the U.S. warshipsin port shared in the observance. At Windsor, Ontario, Rear-AdmiralWalter Hose, Chief of the Naval Stafffrom 1920 to 1934, addressed the par­ticipating units and members of theWindsor branch of the Naval Officers'Association marked the occasion byholding their first annual dinner on theSaturday evening. Their guest speakerwas Captain James Pratt, Director ofPersonnel (Officers), of Ottawa.

At Esquimalt altars were erected onthe upper playing field and in the gum­nasium for Protestant and Roman Cath­olic services respectively.

The special significance of this year'sobservance lay in the fact that it was

Battle of the Atlantic Sunday wasmarked this year, by coincidence, onthe 48th anniversary of the establish­ment of the Naval Service of Canada,later to be known as the Royal Can­adian Navy. Assent was given to theNaval Service Act on May 4, 1910.

Upper YardmanPlan Replaced

The upper yardman sche~e for theselection and preparation of men onthe lower deck for commissioned rankcame to an end on May 5 and at thesame time new avenues of promotionwere opened.

The action was taken in accordancewith a recommendation of the RCNPersonnel Structure Committee, aimedat improving opportunities for promo­tion from the lower deck. It is hopedthat new, improved selection methodswill result in earlier discovery of pros­pective officers.

Men who were being reported on asupper yardman candidates will bechannelled into various training plans,depending on their age and educationalbackground. Some will go to HMCSVenture, the officers' training establish­ment in ESquimalt; .others will go to theCanadian Services Colleges; universitytraining will be provided for Some, andothers will receive branch officer train­ing.

Large crowds lined the Sydney water­front to watch the departure of theships, the largest single group seen inthe harbour since the Second WorldWar.

The Bangors, now re-christened,formerly served the RCN as HMC ShipsKentvHle, Kenora, Nipigon, Fort WH­limn, Medicine Hat, Westmount, Blair­more, Swift Current and Sarnia.

The minesweepers were the formerHMC Ships Gaspe, Comox, Trinity andUngava.

U.S. SubmarinesPu.t in at Halifax

Six United States Navy submarinesand a submarine chaser arrived in Hali­fax May 16 for a week-end visit. Thesquadron called at Halifax during thecourse of an officers' training cruise.

The vessels are the submarines Ente'­rnedor, Sea Owl, Piper, Tusk, Jalac andCrevell.e and the submarine chaserTeasle.

Senior officer of the squadron is Cdr.E. C. Barnhardt, embarked in USSPiper.

The upper age limit for universitytraining will be waived where a man isfound to possess the proven ability tocope with this training.

Special arrangements are being madefor men at present attending prepara­tory school as upper yardman candi­dates or completing Canadian HigherEducational Test requirements on theirown.

It was announced last fall that theBranch Officer system of promotionwould be replaced by a method whichwill make possible the promotion ofofficers with practical, specialized ex­perience without placing them in com­petition with General List officers, whocould be expected to have higheracademic education as well as broaderprofessional training and experience.There will be, however, an opportunityfor officers promoted in this manner totransfer to the General List and com­pete for promotion there.

The new promotion scheme will beparticularly favourable to young menof superior intelligence and ability who,for financial or other reasons, wereunable to complete their high schooltraining and who have begun serviceon the lower deck. It will provide themwith opportunities for professional oruniversity training which might nototherwise have opened to them.

On Sunday, observed as Battle of theAtlantic Sunday in Halifax, AdmiralTaylor attended divisions with the SixthSubmarine Squadron in HMC Dockyard.

Admiral Taylor paid official calls onMonday morning, and visited RCAFMaritime Headquarters later in themorning. He visited the Naval Arma­ment Depot and met with chief andpetty 'officers of the Sixth SubmarineSquadron that afternoon. He left forNorfolk, Virginia, Tuesday May 13.

As Flag Officer Submarines, AdmiralTaylor is the Admiralty's adviser onall submarine matters. He also holdsthe NATO appointment of CommanderSubmarines Eastern Atlantic.

will receive instruction in seamanship,communications, gunnery, navigationand other naval subjects. The minimumtime allowed for summer training is 14weeks, of ,which about four are spentat sea.

Approximately 150 second- and third­year cadets, of the constructor, electri­cal, supply, instructor, ordnance andengineering branches, will receivespecialized training ashore in Halifax.

About 65 per cent of the cadets whoare taking their training in the AtlanticCommand are in the executive' branchwhile the remainder' are in the suppI;and technical branches. Those who suc­cessfully complete their third yearqualify for promotion to sub-lieutenantor acting sub-lieutenant.

lUDG RetiringIn September

Surgeon Commodore Eric H. Lee,Medical Director-General of the RoyalCanadian Navy since September 1952will begin retirement leave on Septem­ber 8.

He will be succeeded as Medical Di­rector General by Surgeon Captain T.Blair McLean, who has been PrincipalMedical Officer of Naden, and Com­mand Medical Officer on the staff ofthe Flag Officer Pacific Coast, sinceNovember 1954.

Succeeding Captain McLean in thisdual appointment will be acting Sur­geon Captain Walter J. Elliot. Cap­tain Elliot is now officer-in-charge ofthe Medical Branch School and ophth­almologist at the RCN Hospital at Es­quimalt.

Captain McLean will be promoted tothe rank of surgeon commodore on tak­ing up his new appointment.

Arms ShipmentGoes to Italy

Two shipments, totalling 237.84 tons,of naval guns, spare barrels, mountingsand magazines from reserve stores ofthe Royal Canadian Navy, were madeto Italy in April under Canada's pro­gram of Mutual Aid to member nationsof NATO.

The Nova Scotia government itselfdecided to take action. At a cost of£399 a 50-ton vessel, the Loyal NovaScotian was provided. Equipped witheight guns, Captain T. Criben and his25-man crew saved many a small fish­ing vessel or coastal trading, sloop fromthe ;'privateers. Ships were builtwith the aid of the valuable experiencegained working in the expanding dock­yard at Halifax or in repairing, Britishships which put in at any number ofexcellent Nova Scotia harbours. Thebirth of the nineteenth century ship­building industry in Nova Scotia datesback to these early ties with the BritishNavy.

The Halifax Journal of July 30, 1812,said: .

"Privateers are swarming aroundour coast and the Bay of Fundy;hardly a day passes but we hear ofcaptures made by them."

Throughout the year 1812 Englishmen-of-war did not molest Americanunarmed fishing and coasting vessels.Meanwhile 'many Nova Scotia vesselswere captured. On October 8 a boat'screw from one of these American priva­teers landed on Sheep Island at themouth of the Tusket River. They shotFrancis Clements, ransacked his house,carried off his livestock and .left ,awidow with nine children. Fortunatelyth.e 'privateer ,was shortly afterw'ardcaptured by the Shannon. Although thecoast was repeatedly visited by priva­teers, the naval force on the Halifaxstation prevented any well-groundedfears of anenen1.Y landing. In JuneI813 two men-of-war, of 74 guns, anda frigate were seen chasing an armedvessel into Mahone, Bay.. The alarm gunswere immediately ,discharged at theblockhouses and outI?osts and themilitia was summoned and put to sea tochase the schooners. There was :q.o needas a British 74-gun warship La Hogueand the·.frigate Orpheus had chased theAmerican privateer Teaser into MahoneBay. The Teaser's ,crew, seeing th'em­selves cornered, blew the ship up.

of eighteen guns. Commanded by anative Nova Scotian, Captain MichaelHead, the Curlew had captured as prizethe Volante, a 20-gun ship with 90 menon board.,

SUC,CESS continued throughout 1814.On July 5 the six-gun vessel Snap

Dragon was captured by HM sloopMartin off Sambro light. A few dayslater the United States sloop Rattle­snake of 18 guns, was taken off Shel­burne by HM Frigate Leander. Thesetwo vessels were brought in for adjudg­ment to the Vice-Admiralty Courts inHalifax. By August 1814 so successfulhad the blockade of the American coast'become that a number of amphibiousoperations were undertaken by theNavy. In the early part of AugustAdmiral Cochrane sailed to ChesapeakeBay and landed a military force whichstruck fear into the Americans by thetemporary capture of the city of Wash­ington. On August 26 Governor Sher­brooke and Rear-Admiral Griffiths setsail in the Dragon, a "74", for Penob­scot. Sherbrooke's diary reveals an out­line of this operation.

erlployment on the "sea during war timewas privateering. Perkins of Liverpool,mentioned earlier, built and made readyfor sea in 1798 the Charles Mary Went­worth and supplied her with 16 gunsfrom the naval ordnance stores atHalifax.

Another of the privateers of the earlyNapoleonic War, and perhaps the mostfamous, was the brigRover~ commandedby Alexand.erGodfrey. Built at HerringCove, the Rover,mounting 14 four­pounders,':sailed June 4, 1800, for theSpanish Main with a crew, of 55. Aftera severe ehgagemenf-in •which She cap­tured thre~ ships, including the Spanishflag ship-the Santa 'Rita-which nettedthe Rover ';'£ 10,OOO:t.irofit,~she ' r~turnedOctobe~ 16' to, Halifax.';' No wonder themerchants of Liverpool and Halifaxturned readily to privateering.

"No' commander of any ship orvessel having a letter oj marque

and a reprisal, as aforesaid, shallpresume, as they shall answer forit, at their peril, to wear any Jack,Pennant~ or other Ensign orColour~, usually borne by our Ships,but that besides the Colours usuallyborne by merchant ships, they dowear a Red Jack, with the UnionJack described in the Canton at theupper corner thereof near the staff".From the above quoted instructions it

is apparent that the Royal Navy, duringthe War of 1812, did not intend to keepAmerican warships tied down to theirharbours so that Nova Scotian priva­teers could have a field day. Personnelof His Majesty's ships were impressedwhile those on board the privateerswere volunte~rs. British warships alsoresented the poor discipline aboard theprivateers and especially the thought oflosing the prize money.

One of the most successful of theNova Scotian privateers was the Liver­pool Packet. This vessel, formerlyknown as the Black Joke, was pur­chased from the Vice-Admiralty Courtsby four Liverpool merchants. EnosCollins, John and James Barss andBenjamin Knaut. Weighing 67 tons,she was originally designed to carrypassengers and mail from Liverpool toHalifax and as such was the first vesselinto Liverpool with the news of thewar. i With the outbreak ,of war in 1812,she was q~ickly, fitted out with guns,and her crew, many of them fishermen,increased to 45. For two months theLi~er'Pool Packet anchored at Liver­pool, as Captain Joseph Barss patientlyawaited a letter-of-marque which gavehim permission to attack enemy com­merce. Governor Sherbrooke grantedthe Letter, August 20, 1812. On August31 'Barss put to sea with 60 days foodon board, 20 rounds of cannister, '300pounds of shot and four hundred­weight of gun-powder' in hism~gazine.

Barss' commission read that he had theriglit to .apprehend, seize, and 'takeship's goods and vessels belonging toFrance. This was the' only po~er theGovernor had the right, to give. It wasnevertheless' understood that Britishauthorities would allow attacks madeon American commerce.

ON SEPTEMBER 7, Barss was sail­," . ing on the George Banks and the

heavy shipping lanes. Here he cap­tured the Middlesex, a 325-ton1 vessel'carrying coal'and salt to New York; andthe Factor, a smalle'r vessel bound forProvidence, Rhode Island, with a cargoof wine. These two ,vessels with prizecrews on board were' sent to the Vice­Admiralty Courts in Halifa~ to·be con;..demned. The vessel Middlesex, and her

cargo were returned to its owner. TheFactoT, being American-owned, wascondemned but the Portuguese-ownedcargo was restored to its owner. Theprofits from the FactoT amounted to£ 1,130. Within five days more ships-the Maria, Polly Union, Four Brothersand Little Joe-were sent to Halifax tobe condemned. The LiverpooL Packetreturned to Halifax on expiration of her60-day letter-of-marque.

On November 24, 1812, the Packetwas once more granted a letter-of­marque, this time the authoritiesofficially granting her the right to attackAmerican shipping. Off Cape Cod shecaptured the ThTee Friends, and theELiza. The Boston newspaper "Mes­senger was' horrified by the largenumber of ships captured by the Liver­pooL Packet. When she returned De­cember 21 for Christmas, 20 prizes laymoored to her credit in the LiverpoolRiver.

The Navy objected to the successachieved by the Packet and so far notone of her prizes had been sold. SamuelH. George, Edward Brabruzon Brenton,and Brenton Halliburton, officers andagents of the Admiralty, had filed aclaim for 18 of the 21 prizes. Sir B.Halliburton, Chief Judge in the prov­ince, alleged that the LiverpooL Packet,private-armed schooner, commandedby. Barss was not duly commissionedand authorized as a letter-of-marque.Governor Sherbrooke did his best topreserve the rights of the LiverpooLPacket, but the Receiver-General wonthe first round. An appeal was ent~red

in the courts and this time the ownerswon, but it had been a costly venture.The owners received, in November1814, only £21,814 as £2,500 wereswallowed up in court fees.

The poor privateersmen, who we~'e ona share system, got nothing until Jan­mIry 1813 and then they collected

only £ 12 a share, from the sale of theFactoT. It took two years to reap thebenefits from the £21,814 and it wasdivided as follows:

owners-£ 10,907ship's expenses-£2,000 seasonprofit-£8-10,000

Forty-five men: to be divided as fol­lows:

Thus seamen earned about £ 156 each.J. Barss received £10,000.

Not content with those rewards theLwerpooL Packet continued her illus­trious career. On Sunday May 22, 1813,she came into Halifax after completingher ninth cruise. Thirty-three vesselsawaited judgment before the Vice­Admiralty Courts. Finally her luck ran

out, and on June 11, 1813, she wascaught by the American privateerThomas, off Portsmouth, New Hamp­shire; Barss was taken prisoner andlater paroled. Utilized for awhile bythe Americans, the Packet was recap­tured and, under a new set of ownersand a new commander, Caleb Seeley,went on to capture a half a dozen otherprizes. She finally retired on October,1814. Thus the Liverpool Packet hadcaptured 45 prizes valuea at £ 262,500from August, 1812 to December, 1814.From his own profits Captain JosephBarss built a beautiful mansion whichstill stands in Liverpool today.

T ROMAS FREEMAN was anothermerchant who sought to i~crease

his earnings by turning to privateering.Freeman and Snow Parker, walrushunter, privateer owner and member ofthe House of Assembly bought, the Re­taliation, a condemned prize, at Hali­fax. A small topsail schooner, 60 feetlong and weighing 71 tons, the Retalia­tion set sail with a letter-of-Marquedated February 18, 1813. After a shortcruise she returned at the end of Marchwith £ 6,000 in prizes before the prizecourt. Both Freeman and Parker hadmade modest fortunes. Due to the sick...ness of Thomas. Freeman, the partner...ship was dissolved and the vessel sold.Under the new owners she once againput to sea. Unfortunately her luck ranout as she ran into HMS Sttpe","b, a 74­gun man-of-war blockading New Lon­don, and a number of her crew wereimpressed. The fate of some of her crewillustrates. the disastrous economiceffect the·navy could have on the crew'sdependents.

Nova Scotian privateers constantlyhad to worry about their prizes beingseized by British warships. Such. a casewas the story of the Crown. ThomasSm~th, baker, and John O'Bryn, sail­make~, both of Halifax, after depositing£ 1,500 as a security for good behaviour,received a letter-of-marque. In earlyApril, 1813, Solomon Jennings, master,put to sea and on the 23rd 'captured thebrigantine Sibue, fr<?m Boston, ten milessouthwest of Cape Sable. Adams replied coolly: "I do not needto learn discipline, sir. I have had thehonour to serve His Majesty under LordNelson at the Battle of the Nile. I waswounded and disabled there. I foughtunder his Lordship at the capture of St.Jago, and at the Battle of Copenhagen,and at Tenneriffe. I fought under Cap­tain Barkely on the Glorious First ofJune, in Lord Howe's action when wewhipped the French and Spanish. Asfor keeping me on board here, that issomething you cannot do, Your Honour.I have already served my King andcountry long and faithfully and havebeen disabled in His Maj esty's serviceand so earned my discharge. And I haveit, Your Honour, in black and whiteand can produce it."

Commander Hickey was ~orced toseize two others in lieu of Adams.

rrhe Court of Vice-Admiralty whofinally heard Jenning's story listenedto affidavits on behalf of HMS Atlanta,and allowed her to be a joint captor,along with the late Crown, of brigan­tine S'ibue. The Sibue sold for £5,062which meant £2,531 for each ship.

The largest and finest of all theprivateers of Nova Scotia was the SirJohn Sherb'tooke, owned by EnosCollins, Joseph Freeman, John Barssand Benjamin Knaut and commandedby Joseph Freeman, of Liverpool(father of Thomas Freeman). Freemanreceived his letter-of-marque, February4, 1813, at Halifax, the fourth priva­teering commission granted by Gover­nor Sherbrooke since the outbreak of

the vVar. A strict disciplinarian, Free­man kept his privateer in the samestate of efficiency as if she had flownthe whiplash pennant of the RoyalNavy. Every Sunday morning thehaI?-ds were turned out and he readthem the Articles of War.

Freeman sailed with 150 men (one­third marines) in mid-March, 1813, forthe trade routes off Block Island, whereLong Island Sound traffic convergeswith the navigation between the EasternStates and the South Bay. In threemonths 19 prizes were brought beforethe prize courts netting the owners£ 10,000. Such a vessel cost a consider­able sum to upkeep and as a resultthe brig, now at Liverpool, was adver­tised for sale August 10, 1813.

In the summer of 1813, CaptainBurkett of Matilda and Joseph Freemanof the Sir John Sherbrooke togethercaptl~red the American ship Loyal Samoff Massachusetts Bay. Captain Burketthad to prove before the Vice-AdmiraltyCourts in Halifax that the Matilda wasindeed a regularly commi'ssioned priva­teer and that she had five carriage gunsmounted at the time of the Loyal Sarn'scapture. The prize court decided thatthe recapture of the ship· for her Green­ock .owners called for generous salvagemoney, and allowed the high proportionof one-sixth of the appraised value ofvessel and cargo-£9,424. So the She'l'­brooke and Matilda received approxi­mately $7,850 between them.

ONE-THIRD of all the vessels takenfrom the Americans, 1812-14, were

captured by Nova Scotia privateers.Two-hundred and seven of their cap­tures lay in Maritime harbours-Hali­fax, Saint John, Liverpool, Digby, Yar­mouth-with munitions nailed to theirmain masts signifying that they hadbeen delivered to the Court of Vice­-A-dmiralty ~ After the first sweep of theNovel,. Scotian privateers, 200 wagonshad to 'pe employed to move "the block­adt::d goods,· along the American coast,and insurance rates from Boston toNew Orleans, bywater, rose to a,30 per~entpremium.The NovaScotianpriva­teers kriew well how.·to use.theadvan­tages ga1ned from the British navalblockade ,to achieve large financialprofits.

It can be seen. from these accountsthat the merch?-nts indulging in the pri­vateering ,trade. could, on one hand, reaplarge rewards if their vessels weresound, the crews good, and their luckheld. On the other hand, if they metobjectionable British men-of-war orunscrupulous lawyers in the Vice-Ad-

An estimate of the landscaping re­quirements of HMS Thundere,', as theengineering college is known, placedthem at a thousand trees and 200shrubs, far beyond the resources ofwardroom funds.

Royal Canadian Navy engineers haveresponded to an appeal for assistanceand have contributed $125 to an "RCNShrubs for Manadon Fund" so that thegrounds may be as beautiful as pos­sible by the time Her Majesty theQueen opens the new wardroom build­ing on July 29:

When 79-year-old Rufus W. Connor, of Digby, N.S., turned up at ceremonal divisions at Corn­wallis on May 10 for the belated presentation of his First World War medals, he was attired in theuniform of a master-of-arms, of Royal Navy early 1900s vintage, including frock caat and sword.The presentation was made by Captain M. J. A. T. Jelle, commanding officer of Cornwallis. Mr.Connor served in the navy from 1896 to 1917. (DB-l0574)

Mr. Connor appeared on the dais inthe uniform of a master-at-arms of theRoyal Navy, early 1900s vintage, com­plete with frock coat and sword, addingcolour to the presentation ceremony.

Highlights of MAA Connor's careerconsisted of participation in the Boer

having enlisted in the Royal NavyAugust 1, 1896, and the medals he re­ceived from Captain Jette were the1914-15 Star, British War Medal andthe Victory Medal. He had beenawarded these medals but had neveractually received them.

Four members of a Navy Trackerwalked away from· a crash landing,·thanks to a carpet of foam and ahastily-rigged arrester wire aftercircling the Shearwater runways fortwo hours to burn up fuel and lessenthe danger of fire on landing.

Lt.-Cdr. R. C. Rosenthall, pilot of theTracker, said that a Shrink link of theleft wheel assembly broke on retraction,allowing the wheel to enter its housingwithout enough space to_ corne intolanding position.

Firemen of the air station sprayedgallons of foam over a small portion ofthe runway to cut down the chance Ofa fire through sparks or static electricitywhile the ground crew put up anarrester wire.

Until he found them, he was alonely individual. Who knows, hemight have become mean and destruc­tive from loneliness? Now he had allthe pals he required.

How did his "pals" feel toward him?After an initial shyness, they came toaccept his company. Every day theyfound him prompt and waiting for thefirst of the divers to enter the water.He accompanied the classes through alloperations. Wherever there were twoor more divers, he insisted on the mid­dle berth. This gregarious youngfellow appeared to be happy.

His innate curiosity was somewhat ofa bother to the men working on under­water jobs. He came nosing and prying

T HE LITTLE Cedm'wood retiredfrom oceanographic duties last

year and many must have felt that wasthat. However, it was not long beforeshe was undergoing a drastic seachange.

The', Cedarwood emerged this springin the guise of "SS Commodore", thepaddle steamer that brought the firstminers from San Francisco in 1858after word had trickled down the coastthat gold was to be found in the FraserRiver sands.

When. the "Commodore" sailed again,manned by officers and men fromNaden, her arrival in Victoria on Satur­day, April 26, touched off the main pro­gram of the B.C. Centennial celebra­tions.

The following account of the "Com­modore's" arrival appeared in the April28 issue of the Victoria Daily Times.

The applause, it is true, was not asenthusiastic as it could be, but for Vic­toria at least, the reception given to theprovince's first gold rush ship of 1858was a hearty one.

As the Commodore's black nose edgedaround the corner of the harbour basin,I went tense, expecting a full-throatedroar from the crowds jamming theCauseway.

It was all part of the carnival at­mosphere.

The pounding of Indian tom-toms- that wondrously exciting sound ­greeted the arrival of the gold-rushboys.

Unlike their historic predecessorsthey were given, not the cold shoulder,but a dignified welcome from suchleading citizens as L. J. Wallace, chair­man of the B.C. Centennial Committee;Mayor Percy Scurrah, Public WorksMinister W. N. Chant (representingPremier Bennett), and Sir James

grandstand view from their bedroomwindows.

Mingling with the crowds along theCauseway were bearded Sikhs, song­voiced Chinese, burly young Canadianswith beards and sideburns, and hun­dreds of teenagers-the boys in colouredshirts and blue jeans, the girls inflowered skirts and ballet shoes.

Children scampered in and out ofthe crowds and a dog which had lostits master raced up and down the side­walk sniffing eagerly at anyone whomight have a familiar smell.

The clock has been turned back a hundred years on board one of Her Majesty's Canadian Shipstin the West Coast and the officers and men of her crew have undergone certain correspondingchanges. The Cedarwood, of recent oceanographic fame, is plying B.C. waters as SS Commodore,the sidewheeler which, a hundred years ago, brought San Francisco miners to Victoria on· their wayto the Fraser River. This explains the presence here of a portrait of the grizzled First Mate of theCommodore, whom intimate friends might recognize as Lt. E. A. MacFayden and the other chummy,but anachronistic, picture of the Commodore and the Crescent in Esquimalt harbour. (E-44988; E-44871)

Alas ... the crescendo didn't come.We heard only the pattering of manyhands, like rain on a tin roof.

Victoria wasn't to be intimidated byany old paddle steamer! It was toowell-mannered!

Yet for many, I'm sure, the appear­ance of the old pioneer ship bringingbearded gold-seekers and their gayladies from San Francisco must havebeen a real thrill.

It was a forceful re-enactment of thegold fever which hit Victoria just 100years ago.

Crowding the decks of the Commo­dOTe (actually the re-converted HMCSCedaTwood) were some 60 miners ­fierce-looking ruffians, carrying picks,packs and pistols.

A band of Cowichan Indians led byChief Mike Underwood greeted theCommod01-e's appearance in the har­bour with a savage song that wouldhave chilled the hearts of pioneers indays gone by.

And then, as a sharp reminder of thepresent, three Avengers of the RoyalCanadian Navy, roared overhead at dis­creet heights of 500 feet.

The Commodore maintained her his­toric poise, flying both the Union Jackand the Stars and Stripes, as she' wasescorted into the harbour by a flotillaof tugs and small sea craft.

CBC announcer Bill Herbert, whosecommentary was relayed through aloud-speaker system, informed the pop­ulace that the orange-red smoke fromthe Commodoj'e's funnels came from

No one believed him, since themodern-day CommodoTe is known tobe diesel-powered but the crowd ac­cepted his explanation in the spirit ofthe occasion.

"The rush is on," said Mr. Herbert."We are trying to preserve with his­torical accuracy a scene that occurredhere 100 years ago."

As he spoke, two stowaways-RCNLieutenants John Murison and Al Booth-jumped from the C01T1.modore intothe chilly waters of the harbour andswam ashore.

"There go two of our brave pioneers,leaping to freedom in a promised land,"commented Mr. Herbert.

Flanked by tugs, Indian canoes andassorted small craft, the Commodoremoved gracefully into the harbour,within range of a battery of cameras­professional and amateur -lining theedge of the Causeway.

Thousands of spectators spilled overthe green lawns of the Empress whilehundreds more packed the hotel bal­conies, and many guests enjoyed a

Ex-Chief Ross declared:"One hundred years ago we were

Works Minister Chant said:"You have worthy descendants here

today. There are still great secrets tobe uncovered and great wealth to begained by courage and exploration.

Ceremonies over, the visitors weretaken' for a' ride by horse and carriagearound Birdcage Walk and the Legisla­tive Buildings back to the Empress

Hotel where they were entertained byMr. Wallace and the B.C. CentennialCommittee in the approved style.

The usual deadly restraint of thehotel lounge was shattered when thebearded miners and their gay ladiesparaded through the tea and crumpetdevotees.

"We've been coming to the Empressfor years past but we've never seenanything as lively as this," commentedJoseph Friclmer of San Francisco, sit­ting with his wife, a cheerful grey­haired lady, in the lounge.

"We used to think of Victoria as acity where nothing ever happened, butit seems we have under-estimated theold place."

One of the most unlikely march.pasts ever to occur during divisions took place at Naden on April 25 when the crew of the "55 Commodore" andtheir passengers, rough, tough, gun.toting miners, swarmed across the' parade ground. (E·45066)

THE CORNWALLIS HOBBY SHOWT HE CORNWALLIS Hobby Show,

held at the Recreation Centre onFriday and Saturday, April 25 and 26,was viewed by over 1,500 people andproved an unqualified success.

The high calibre of the many andvaried exhibits helped assure the suc­cess of the show. Included in the dis­play were items from New Brunswickand Halifax as well as from the areaaround Cornwallis and Cornwallis itself.The first enterprise of this kind to beheld here, it is hoped to make this anannual event from now on.

Samples of handicraft displayed in­cluded leatherwork, paintings, needle­work, hand-made silver jewelry, manymounted with polished native stones;rugs, woven articles, and many others.Especially eye-catching for the feminineviewers were the attractive rugs, whichwould add a colourful note to any home.The hand-woven articles were all beau­tiful but an outstanding article was theblack stole trimmed with bands of silverat either end. A group of five paintingsby Kelsey Raymond of Smith's Cove,drew many favourable comments.

A highlight of the two-day show wasthe live demonstration by some of thecraftsmen. Mrs. A. C. Cosgrove demon­strated weaving; Wren B. Banning andOrd. Sea. Thomas Webster of KootenayDivision, leathercraft; Ord. Sea. MichaelWilson, Restigouche Division, workedon a model boat; James Lewis, ofAnnapolis, demonstrated stone - cuttingand polishing; Lt. David Molliet andLt. George White displayed a hi-fi setand explained how to build one; POElkstein demonstrated ham radio opera­tion and was very successful, being able

to raise Germany, Sweden and Den­mark as well as many nearer places,during the show. A model aeronauticdisplay by Ord. Sea. W. W. Todd, St.Croix divisions; Ord. Sea. L. Menard,Margaree division and Ord. Sea. J.Mitchell, with engine-powered modelsbuilt by the men themselves, held inthe drill shed because of the high wind,drew many spectators especially amongthe younger generation. Lt. E. Derby­shire displayed a TV assembly unit forthose brave enough to attempt to buildtheir own set.

One of the most attractive displaysof the show was the Scout and Guidedisplay on the second floor. The Scoutshad a complete camping site set up,with evergreen boughs adding a touchof realism. The exhibit included themess tent, a sleeping tent, a cookingarea. and a camp-fire site. Several ofthe boys and girls were on hand toanswer any questions concerning thedisplay. Also on display here werevarious projects which the Guides andScouts must complete for their badges.This exhibit was in charge of Guide,Scout, Brownie and Cub Leaders.

During the entire show, which wasopen Friday evening, Saturday after­rlOon and evening, appropriate filmswere shown in the TV room every half­hour.

On the opening night of the showCaptain M. J. A. Jette presented prizesto some of the winners.

The jacket design, al­though controversial, was personalizedby allowing a space on the right armfor the name of the wearer. Those whoir).dicated they wanted no name sewnon, had their jackets dutifully inscribed"No Name". It was disappointing atfirst to find most of the jackets weremade undersize but the Dependants'Day cruise following the ship's returnhome proved their worth. They werethe rig-of-the-day for wives and sweet­hearts.-W.B.W.

HMCS Cayuga

The 1957-1958 Pacific Command hoc­key series was a hard-fought round ofbattles, with top honours being cap­tured by the destroyer escort Cayuga.

Rear-Admiral H. S. Rayner, FlagOfficer Pacific Coast, presented thechampionship trophy during a ship'scompany dance held recently. Cdr. P.C. Benson, the Cayuga's commandingofficer, accepted the trophy on behalfof the ship and the hockey team.

HMCS Ontario

Financial assistance to three Fijianathletes who wish to attend the Brit­ish Empire Games in Wales this sum­mer was oile of the goodwill gesturesmade. by .the ship's company of Ontarioduring the cruiser's 10-week 'trainingcruise to the Hawaiian and Fiji Island,New Zealand and Australia this spring.

The incident occurred when the On­tario, carrying 50 senior-term cadetsfrom Venture, junior officer trainingestablishment at Esquimalt, called atSuva en route to her home port whereshe was due to arrive May 5.

During the three-day visit at theSouth Pacific Island port, Captain J. C.Littler, the Ontario's commanding offi­cer, hearing that a fund was being setup in Suva to enable three Fijian ath­letes of near Olympic standards to at-

. tend the games, made a radio· broadcastand, on behalf of his ship's companyand Canada, gave the athletes theirfirst donation of $100, expressing thehope that Canadian and Fijian athleteswould be able to strive side by sidefor the high honours that.go to the win­ner in such competitions.

Naval Supply Depot, Halifax, bade fare­well to their departing officer-in-charge,Cdr. (S) D. A. Collins.

Cdr. Collins left the depot after morethan three years as officer-in-charge tobecome supply officer of the Bona­venture.

In parting, he said that his tenure ofoffice was most enjoyable and he at­tributed much of his success as officer­in-charge to the excellent co-operationreceived from the staff generally.

conditions in Canadian and adjacentwaters, went into oper~tion this spring.The service is being operated this yearby the Royal Canadian Navy on, behalfof the Department of Transport, which'\-vill take it over in 1959.

The service is a part of a mutualarrangement between Canada and theUnited States for provision of informa­tion on ice-infested areas around thecoast of North America, for the benefitof commercial and 'government ship­ping.

The areas covered by the RCN iceforecasts include the Gulf of St. Law­rence, Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait andthe northern .coast of continental Can­ada.

. Ice, forecasts for the Central andEastern Arctic and for the shippinglanes. along the east coast of Baffin Bayhave been provided in the past by theUnited States Navy's Hydrographic Of­fice. This year the Hydrographic Officewill provide the usual fUll support toshipping along the east coast north toBaffin Bay and five and 3D-day fore­casts' for the Eastern Arctic area. . Otherice advisories and ice forecasts will be

. provided by Canada.The new Ice Central", as it is called,

. is located at the ReN Air. Station,Shearwater-, and is operated by RCNpersonnel who have' had ',previous prac­tical experience with sea ice and takenspecial training courses ,with the 'U.s.Hydrographic Office. The Departmentof Transport has organized an exten­sive system of surface and aerial iceobservations, which are relayed to theIce Central at Shearwater for use inissuing ice bulletins and ice forecasts.Both civilian and Royal Canadian AirForce aircraft will be used in the aerialice surveys.

By midsummer of this year, threefield forecast stations will be set up atChurchill, Cambridge and Frobisher inthe north. While the Shearwater IceCentral will be manned the year round,these stations will be manned, two ata time, during the summer monthsonly.

The Shearwater unit will providebasic ice information to the threenorthern sta tions, which will beequipped .with...radio facsimile record­ers.

W HAT DOES total war do to theconscience of man? Should any

burden of guilt rest on a human beingwho, kills another as a matter of dutyduring a war?

Captain George Grider, USN, whosesubmarine, the Flasher, destroyed agreater tonnage of Japanese shippingthan any other U.S. submarine duringthe Second World War, was disturbinglyconfronted by these questions towardthe end of- the war. He was wagingtotal war and he waged it with an im­personal detachment. The ships he sankwere "targets", the men aboard themwere simply "the enemy" with no indi­viduality.

Then, during a patrol toward the' endof the war, when Japanese ships hadbeen almost swept from th~ face of thePacific, the Flasher came upon a ratherlarge sampan and attacked her withgunfire. When it appeared the crew hadabandoned ship and were all making fornearby land a grenade was tossed onboard the little vessel in the hopethat it would hole the bottom and sinkher. With the explosion a man leapedup from where he had been hiding inthe stern sheets. His back was coveredwith blood.

It would be wrong to conclude fromthe passage just quoted that CaptainGrider's story, as told to Lydel Sims in"War Fish" is burdened with solemnity.It is a story that gallops along, a brewwell-laced with cheerful anecdotes. Infact, it almost requres the British ex­pression "jolly' to describe it.

Discipline in a submarine is some­thing that has to be self-imposed. Itis born of the dependence of crew mem­bers on each other for their comfort,

their safety and their very Iives. Inthe smelly, crowded interior of a sub.­marine there is no room for either fas­tidiousness or friction. The most awe­some standing order that Captain Griderever issued was to the effect that choc­olate ice' cream (which he loathed)should not be served inv~riably. Itwas 'the flavour to which most of themen in the Flasher had a passionateaddiction and the captain showed fineChristian forbearance as long as hecould. And then he produced the fol­lowing order:

"Ship's Order No. 398.7B. Hereafter,the ratio of chocolate ice cream to allother flavours served on board the USSFlasher shall not exceed OI)e in three.Signed .under my hand' and seal thisthirtieth day of March, 1945. G. W.Grider,Commanding Officer."

There are dozens of tales of subma­rine actions in the book-----':both single­handed and wolf pack. The subma­riner's greatest peril, it would appear,is becoming so engrossed, in attack thathe fails to notice the approach of anescort from another bearing. It is ,madevery clear that attacking shipping inshallow .coastal waters is dangerousbusiness. A submarine's. chief hope ofsafety after attacking a convoy lies .inits ability to dive deep.

Captain Grider tells of·' dishearteningdifficulties with defective torpedoes dur­ing the early stages of the' war in thePacific. One submarine expended

every torpedo against enemy shippingwithout a single one firing. Anothertorpedo J.nade a hairpin turn and blewoff the stern of the submarine that firedit. A practice torpedo that CaptainGrider (then executive officer of theHawkbill) fired at a target destroyer offBalboa failed to run deep and crashedthrough the ·engineroom. The destroyerlimped into port, was patched .up andreturned to its target duties t;hree dayslater. Grider tried another, shot. Samething' happened.

Readers will be touched by the storyof how Bible reading on Sunday nightsbecame .standard practice on board theirreverent Flasher-all ·through an in­nocent misunderstanding on the partof a devout young Negro steward.

Because of a 'minor heart attack,Captain Grider retired from the USNshortly after the Second World War.He studied law and began a new career.With the coming of the snorkel andthen the nuclear submarine, he believesthat there is little place left for indi­viduality.

"We were corsairs in the Pacific con­flict, and I believe we were the last ofthe corsairs."

He believes' that the submarine hascome inte) its own, with its great endur­ance and underwater speed, and itsfearsome' weapons:-the homing torpedoand the guided missile.

"Where the revolutionary changes insubmarine design will lead no one canbe sure," he observes. "The growingtalk of the all-submersible navy' of thefuture, iii w4ich even' battleships andaircraft carriers can submerge forgreater safety or secrecy, mayor maynot' be a pipe dream~ But on one pointthere can' be no douht: the submarinehas proved its right to an increasinglymajor share in naval' planning.."

In .' this book, the courageous, genialand thoughtful personality of CaptainGrider seemS' to shine through. But doesit? Are the warm, human sentiments'expressed in these pages born in Cap­tain .Grider's heart or are they fromthe facile pen of his "ghost"! Stadacona has again entered the Hali­fax Garrison Indoor Rifle League withtwo senior and two junior teams.

Stad "AU seniors swept the field ofeight, with an aggregate score of 4,838out of a possible 5,000, to gain first placean'd win the Richard Oland Trophy.

They also won the United Cleanersand Dyers Trophy for the high weeklyaggregate score, breaking all previousrecords with a total of 491 out of a pos­sible 500. (Stad held the record with atotal of 488 for four years.)

Busy Hockey SeasonAt Shannon Park

During the past winter, from Novem­ber until May, Shannon Park, N.S.,boasted one of the most active hockeyclubs of the area.

The Pee Wee Hockey Club, organizedfive years ago by CPO Harry Swansonwho is now president of the ShannonPark 'Hockey Club, has attracted amembership of 100 ardent puck en­thusiasts. Its four teams each played15 games.

Top honours for the season went tothe Blackhawks, coached by AB CharlesBlythe. The Shannon Park TownCouncil Trophy was presented to themat the annual Pee Wee's dinner.

Shooting spoons were awarded for thehighest score obtained each week inboth senior and junior divisions andStad Seniors made the highest indi­vidual score in five out, of 12 matcheswhile the Juniors won four. PO Belltook three.

A total of nine trophies out of 13 werewon by Stad's sharpshooters as well asnine spoons out of 24.
