Our 48th President
Kids Need Kiwanis
Our Motto: ”Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time.”
What is Kiwanis?
Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 by a group of businessmen in Detroit, Michigan, USA. The
organization was originally called the Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers, but changed its
name to Kiwanis a year later.
The name "Kiwanis" was coined from an expression in an American Indian language of the Detroit area,
"Nunc Kee-wanis," which means, "we trade." In 1920, the motto of Kiwanis became “We Build.” It
remained the motto until 2005, when members voted to change it to “serving the children of the world.”
In the early years, members focused on business networking but in 1919, the organization changed its
focus to service—specifically service to children.
Kiwanis became an international organization with the founding of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton,
Ontario, Canada, in 1916. Kiwanis clubs formed in communities across the United States and Canada
until the 1960s when worldwide expansion was approved. Another historical event took place in 1987
when Kiwanis International ended a 72-year men-only tradition to let its 8,200 clubs admit women.
Today, Kiwanis clubs are helping children thrive, prosper and grow in nearly 80 nations and geographic
locations.
All people are welcome to participate in the Kiwanis movement of improving communities for children.
In 1987, women were invited to join. In 2008, delegates approved a resolution that calls for Kiwanis clubs
to celebrate and foster inclusiveness.
At the 1924 convention in Denver, Colorado, the delegates approved the following
“objects of Kiwanis.” These have remain unchanged to this date.
OBJECTS OF KIWANIS
To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional
standards.
To develop by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable
citizenship.
To provide through Kiwanis clubs a practical means to form enduring friendships, to
render altruistic service and to build better communities.
To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism
which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.

PROGRAM / GREETER SCHEDULE
PROGRAM COMMITTEE – Pres. Elect Rodney Davis – assisted by Vice Pres. Stacey
Carlson Since the beginning of the Morwens Club each member has been responsible to
provide a program on a rotation basis. Some may choose to provide a program themselves while
most will bring someone from the community to share their knowledge, experiences, etc. This
method provides diversity of program content. The member arranging for the program also
is responsible for the prayer of the day. NOTE: Please make every effort to locate and line
up a program when you are scheduled. It is entirely OK to switch with another member if you
have a specific date you would like to have for your program date. If you need assistance in
locating a program, contact the President or a member of the Program Committee listed above.
The board encourages committee chairs to convene periodic committee meetings outside regular
Morwens meeting dates. Seven a.m. seems to work well. Please let the President know when
you are meeting.

SOME SPECIFICS Kiwanis is a service organization - not a social club, although enduring friendships are created through the Kiwanis spirit of fellowship that comes from mutual effort devoted to great and useful ends. Kiwanis is often a public forum-but never a political circle. Meeting programs frequently provide platforms for the balanced, and impartial, presentation of public issues of interest to the members and the community. Kiwanis makes its activities known. It is not a secret society. There are no private rituals. Public awareness of Kiwanis activities is sought because it increases support for Kiwanis service efforts.
Kiwanis fosters principles of good citizenship and human values - it does not prescribe a way of life for others.
And Finally - the actions of each club are guided by the needs of its own locality. Kiwanis does not impose programs
upon its clubs or members.

The Eliminate Project
With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal
tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each
year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme
sensitivity to light and touch.
To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This
requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million
— and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.
Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public
health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. And in doing so, the
project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The end of
this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.
The Morwens have voted to be a “MODEL CLUB” with The Eliminate project. This is a $35,250
commitment to be fulfilled in five years – starting with the 2013-2014 Kiwanis Year.

Did the club sponsor a Service Leadership Program?
Did your club commit to and carry out a project that is aimed at alleviating hunger in your community?
With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly
disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are
excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.
To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines,
syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF
and every member of the Kiwanis family.

those members attending. Attendance of at least one interclub (4 members) at the annual District Convention is encouraged. . Meals to
and from the convention city will NOT be paid by the club. Members are encouraged to car-pool. Certified delegates shall be the

directors may elect to pay member meal costs to those attending this event.
ADM-20 4/24/98 INTERCLUBS INTERCLUBS are encouraged. There will be NO reimbursement for either meals nor mileage for members traveling to regular interclubs. It is the belief of the membership that those participating in these interclubs gain personal growth through
the fellowship with other Kiwanians in other communities.
ADM-30 4/24/98 LOCAL PRESIDENTS INSTALLATION The incoming president is encouraged to continue the policy of holding a reception after the official installation. The club will pay the
cost of a decorated cake (or similar) for this occasion.
Adm-35 4/24/98 PRESIDENTS AWARDS The following awards shall be presented at the annual installation banquet.
1. The incoming president shall receive a plaque. This shall be ordered by the Secretary.
2. The President shall select and present any other awards he/she may wish.

Jr. And shall have a new name tab added each year it is awarded.
ADM-40 4/24/98 MEMBER ACCOUNTS Members shall be encouraged to keep all accounts with the club treasurer up to date. Beginning October 2017, members will have the
option of annual billing. Annual bills will be due at the same time as first quarter bills. Quarterly dues shall be billed for the quarter
following the billing date. Meals shall be billed for the previous quarter. The treasurer shall present bills to all members on
approximately (Quarter 1-October 1); (Quarter 2-January 1); (Quarter 3-April 1); (Quarter 4-July 1). The treasurer shall quarterly

ADM-60 4/24/98 LEAVE OF ABSENCE DUES PAYMENT Members requesting a “leave of absence” must do so in accordance to the Kiwanis International Policies. Requests must be made at a
regularly scheduled board meeting. Members granted a “leave of absence” shall be billed the full amount of all applicable dues. (Note-
the only advantage of a leave of absence is the member’s attendance (or lack of it) is not counted on the club attendance as reported to
Kiwanis International.)
ADM-61 8-29-2014 INACTIVE MEMBER STATUS Although Kiwanis International recognizes only Active Status members, the Morwens offer an Inactive Status. Inactive Status is
intended to be a "Goodwill Status" to keep a member who is unable to participate, connected to the club until they can resume active
status. Inactive Status is not intended to be a dues abatement, but a non-participatory status.
To initiate Inactive request, a member in good standing, all dues being current, must submit an explanatory request in writing to the
Morwens Board of Directors. The board will vote on the request at the next scheduled board meeting, all decisions being final. If
Inactive Status is granted, it will be for the remainder of the Kiwanis fiscal year, or the upcoming fiscal year. A request must be made
for each subsequent year, subject to board approval.
An Inactive Status member will be listed in the Morwens handbook as an Inactive member, and will continue to receive Morwens
newsletters, and informative emails sent to the general membership.
To return to Active Status, and request and new member application must be made to the board for approval, and all appropriate
Morwens and International dues must be paid including the new member fees. This may transpire at any time in the fiscal year, and
will be considered a new Active Status membership in the Morwens and International Kiwanis.
ADM-65 4/24/98 MEMBERS BECOMING UNEMPLOYED Members becoming unemployed may be granted “free dues” for a period not to exceed two quarters. This shall be at the discretion
and approval of the majority vote of the Board of Directors at a regularly scheduled meeting.
ADM-70 9-27-2013 NEW MEMBER DUES It shall be the policy of the Algona Morwens to pay the District and International New Member Fees.
ADM-90 1-26-01 KIWANIAN OF THE YEAR The Morwens Kiwanis Club shall annually select a “Kiwanian of The Year”. Selection of this honoree shall be by subjective
assessment based on impact to the club in the year the award is awarded. The committee making this selection shall consist of the
club secretary, and the past four persons receiving this award. The honoree shall receive a plaque and shall receive a George F.
Hixson Fellowship membership or Bartlett medallion. During the period of The Eliminate Project the recipient will be awarded a
Walter Zeller Medallion. Funds for this are from the weekly club “Wheel Drawing.” These awards shall be presented at the annual
installation banquet. Nominations from members not on the committee will be accepted and encouraged.
ADM-95 1-26-01 FRED DIEKMANN, JR INTERCLUB AWARD The Club shall annually award the Fred Diekmann, Jr Interclub Award. This shall be awarded based on the following criteria.
Interclub emphasis by the member, interclub attendance as recorded by the club secretary (minimum of six to qualify). In case of a
tie, multiple names may be awarded. The person (s) so honored shall have their name engraved on the traveling plaque. This award
shall be given at the annual Installation Banquet. If no member meets the qualifications, there will be no award for that given year.
This award is given in memory of long time member Fred Diekmann, Jr. who was extremely active in interclubbing.
ADM-100 8-28-2015 PHOTOGRAPHY – MEDIA RELEASE The Algona Morwens Kiwanis Club/Officers/Members shall adhere to the following guidelines when issuing news releases and

FLAG POLE PROJECT: A detailed accounting of this activity has been provided to the officers. The Flag Pole project started in
2002 – since that date we have installed 225 ( as of 2017) Flag Poles in the area. This project started when Chuck Kline, Bill Hobson, and
Howard Omdahl attended the Int. Convention in New Orleans in 2002 and came home having ordered a starter supply. This has been a
Morwens Signature project in the community. In 2015, we switched supplier to the Kranz Flag Pole Co. of Painesville, MN
Additional Notes about Activity Fund Distribution:
A full listing of ALL Activities will be found in the Annual Handbook.
It should be noted that the Morwens not only open their check book but also provide countless (only the Secretary knows)
hours of community service.
Items to record for Historical Record: Morwens members having served as Division 2 Lt. Governor are: Marion Battani, Roger Kurtenbach 1989-1990, Frank Merrill,

Welcome to the Algona Morwens Kiwanis Club
A brief history of the Morwens Club The Kiwanis International year 1971-72 saw Algonian Wes Bartlett as the president of Kiwanis International. His
home club (The Kiwanis Club of Algona) determined that a new club would be started and chartered in his year as
president. Royal Nold and Elgin Allen co-chaired the building committee. The need for another Kiwanis Club in this area
was brought about because of the number of men whose occupations did not allow them to come to meetings at noon. The
new club was to have its meetings in the morning. A petition was filed to Kiwanis International for the chartering of this
new club. The formal charter is dated October 1, 1971, the first day of the Presidency
of Wes Bartlett, thus the Morwens Kiwanis Club was the first new club chartered
under his Presidency. The name “Morwens” was suggested by English teacher Jack
Celoni. “Morwens” is Old English for Early Morning. Ray Johnson was the first
President with Lynn Kueck serving as Pres. Elect. Four original Charter members are
still involved, they are, Gene Will, Chuck Kline, Walter Reemtsma and Lynn Kueck.
All have served the club as Presidents with Kueck serving a second term in 1996-1997,
the 25th year of the club. The Morwens have 46 members at the close of the 2014-2015
year. They meet at 7:00 am on Wednesdays at the Chrome Country Inn. Although many
of the early Morwens members were “youngsters” by Noon Club standards there may
actually have been a reversal in this over the past years. The Morwens have provided
seven Lt. Governors in Marion Battani, Roger Kurtenbach, Frank Merrill, Floyd Hutzell and Rev. Mark Holmer, and
Howard Omdahl. Rev. Mark Holmer served as NE-IA Governor in 2007-2008. Howard Omdahl also serves as Division 2
Risk Management Chair. Floyd Hutzell served as Region IV Trustee and Div. 2 Leadership Education Trainer. Rev. Mark
Holmer served as Chair of the District 2 Past Lt. Governor Association, the Multi-District Coordinator for the Eliminate
Project, and currently serves as Div. 2 Trustee on the District Foundation Board.
In 2002, the Algona Morwens, with cooperation of the Algona Noon Kiwanis and Algona Golden K Kiwanis
organized a new Aktion Club in our community. This organization is the newest member of the Kiwanis family of Service
Leadership organizations. This group is organized in Algona to serve people with disabilities from Exceptional
Opportunities. About forty members meet on the first and third Tuesdays at the Algona First United Methodist Church.
Their first president was Steve Hertzke. In 2011, the Aktion Club presented Steve Hertzke with a Hixson Medallion. In
2012 the family of Mark Hertzke presented him a Walter Zeller Medallion. The Algona clubs are proud to have started the
first Aktion Club in the Nebraska-Iowa District of Kiwanis. As of October 1, 2013, there have been thirty-six chartered
Aktion Clubs in the District. In 2014, Floyd Hutzell retired after serving 12 years as District Aktion Club Administrator.
The Morwens are proud to support the Kiwanis International and Nebraska-Iowa District Kiwanis Foundations
with annual club gifts. They are also proud of the fact that seventeen members are Hixson Fellows (Kiwanis International
Foundation) with four being at the Diamond 1 level and six members are Bartlett Fellows (NE-IA District Foundation). Each
of these are obtained by a $1000.00 gift to the respective foundation. These members have stepped up to help the children
of the district and world. Also, two members are charter members of the Walter Zeller Fellowship. Fifteen other members
and one spouse are members of the Zeller Fellowship. This is in support of the new Kiwanis International ELIMINATE
initiative to eliminate MNT (Maternal Neonatal Tetanus). This requires a gift of $1,250 to the Kiwanis International
Foundation. In 2014 the Morwens chose to become a “Model Club” with The Eliminate Project. This is a commitment of
$750.00 per member or $35,200 to be given over five years.
The Morwens have been very involved in our community. Over the past years they have conducted fundraisers
to make significant pledges to the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona Family YMCA, State 5 Theater, Kossuth County
Nature Center and have completed a $15,000 pledge to the new 3 story addition to the Kossuth Regional Health Center.
When there is a need in the community the Morwens members step up. Signature service projects are bicycle helmets to all
community third graders, dictionaries to all area school third graders, fishing derby, and pumpkin decorating. We thank
the community for participating in our fund raising projects to make these service projects possible.
In 2015, Kiwanis International celebrated 100 years of service. The first club was Detroit No. 1 – Detroit Michigan
began meeting in January 21, of 1915. Kiwanis was a men’s only club until, after much debate, women were admitted into
the club on July 5, 1987. In the 2015-2016 Kiwanis Year, the first woman president of the organization was seen when Sue
Petrisin took over this leadership role. Our own NE-IA member Jane Erickson, now living in Bellevue, NE, served as
Kiwanis International President for the 2016-2017 Kiwanis Year. Jane started her Kiwanis career in Fort Dodge, IA.
Sue Waldren, 2018-2019 NE-IA Kiwanis Governor
The Gift of Kiwanis - The reason I joined Lincoln Northeast Kiwanis 15 years
ago was to start a Builders Club so that my grandson could have the opportunity
to be in a club where he could develop leadership skills and learn the importance
of giving back to the community. He did not play sports or play an instrument
and Builders Club gave him a place to belong and be proud of.
I am honored and humbled to be the Governor of the Nebraska/Iowa District. I send Greetings from
International President Poly Lat. His theme is “To Grow Kiwanis from Good to Great”! He has
challenged us to work hard to reenergize clubs and make membership a priority so that we can
continue to grow and provide kids with opportunities to reach their full potential. We will continue to
open clubs in communities that do not have a Kiwanis club because “Kids Need Kiwanis!”
“Kids Do Need Kiwanis!” How great that Kiwanis
International has now created a branding campaign to
help people see the connection between Kiwanis and the
work we do to serve children. I have seen firsthand,
working with Builders, K-Kids, and Key Club, what a
huge difference being in a Service Leadership Program
can make in their lives. Kids get it.
They know that volunteering is an excellent way to
provide meaning to their life. It is exciting to watch
children grow and develop a heart to serve. That is what Service Leadership Programs, Key Leader
and Camp OK provide for children. I sometimes get discouraged when I read the paper or watch the
news and wonder what our world is coming to. BUT then I spend time with these kids and I know
we have a bright future ahead of us.
I am proud to be a Kiwanian. I am proud of each of you and all that you do for kids and the less
fortunate. Amazing things happen when excited and passionate people share ideas and work together
to make a positive change. The richest people in the world are not millionaires, but volunteers,
Kiwanians!
I am excited to work with each of you. My vision, my dream is that all children know that they are
important and valued and loved! Let’s dream big! Let’s try new things! Let’s think outside the box!
Let’s work hard and have fun being Kiwanians and making a difference! Let’s ask others to join us.
